What's with the unnecessary hate towards Californian gun owners?
Posted by LeastDerangedNowiFan@reddit | Firearms | View on Reddit | 142 comments
like i'm not even talking about the average anti-gun Californian in general, i'm talking about those of us who are enthusiasts of big bad "military style black rifles" and oppose so called common sense controls. Nobody ever gives the average Colorodo, Washington, New York, Virginian shooter shit for the laws that has passed in the past 5 years or so, but turn around and act as we want shitty fin grips on our guns and personally voted for them. And this extends to FFLs and sellers who for some reason think that by not selling me a damn bolt action that this is somehow going to hurt my state government? Okay i'll just give that thousand dollars to someone else pal.
EntertainmentBig2125@reddit
We don’t hate the owners. Your states gun laws are, um, g*y.
mcx112@reddit
We don’t dislike you, we dislike California laws.

volckerwasright@reddit
Personally, I only make fun of gun owners in ban states who vote Democrat. If you vote to disarm your neighbor, you deserve to be disarmed yourself.
Tomuchrice@reddit
Pretty sure thats the idea. But on the same note your essentially summing up a party to 1 problem. I can be a democrat, be in a ban state, and vote blue but be against gun control. There are many diffrent factors thats go into how you vote. Not just one issue. To be honest thats an ideology I see often in right leaning people. They find 1 thing they agree with and make it their personality, whether its guns, the border, religion. Whatever. My mother in law is a lgbt trump supporter all because she doesnt like immigrants. Makes no sense.
volckerwasright@reddit
Let me stop you right there - if you vote democrat, you are not against gun control.
CFishing@reddit
Guns are unequivocally the most important issue ever, they’re the only thing that gets us out of a hole, if you’re willingly giving them up then you don’t have real values because you have no way to protect them.
abuttfartsinthewoods@reddit
Right on 💯
Sufficient__Size@reddit
I’ve never heard of anyone hating cali gun owners. If anything I feel bad for you.
LeastDerangedNowiFan@reddit (OP)
Tends to happen in r/AK47 and r/AR15 more than other places. They'll screech about how the gun is permanently ruined by a detachable fin grip and somehow not worth scrap metal. Even if you have a premium model like a LWRC or SAM7 they usually cum over.
VanillaIce315@reddit
Yeah, people talk shit about the laws and how goofy the guns look because of them. No one’s hating on the owners for complying with their laws
moebiusgrip@reddit
They act like it’s our fault for choosing to live in CA. I mean, I LOVE this hobby, shooting, tinkering, upgrading, chasing precision and/or speed etc.
I would never in a million years choose a place to live because of it. There are more important things in life.
cmd821@reddit
Same for people like me in NJ. As a New Jerseyian I have plenty of gripes about my state including gun laws, however, there are other things I value in life so until a very 2a friendly candidate comes along that also meets those values I’m stuck usually voting against my interests for this one particular value of mine.
SuperMundaneHero@reddit
Your rights shouldn’t be negotiable and you shouldn’t compromise them.
Palehorse67@reddit
For people like you, the 2a and guns are just a fun hobby. You don't understand that its actually central to your freedom. So you will continue to vote away your ability to take freedom if necessary.
wtfredditacct@reddit
And that is the single biggest reason people hate on TGOs
steelcity65@reddit
This is what's wrong with you. It isn't a fucking hobby. It is a God given right. Start treating it as such.
shmiddleedee@reddit
It's funny how some dude in an shitty Indiana suburb will say "damn I feel sorry for you" to some guy moving to a pristine mountainside in California. California gun laws are bunk but its still a good state to live in.

Oh is that why it’s the state with the fastest dropping population?

Yeah, unless they start ragging on other states I leave em alone. Reagan happened to California, then democrats took that baton and shoved it so far up their ass they couldn't see the Klan endorsements on it. Maybe someday a blind one will clench hard enough and read the K's out like braille.
Lampwick@reddit
I assume you're talking about the Mulford act? The California legislature at the time was controlled by Democrats, and the bill was passed nearly unanimously by both parties. Democrats in California weren't pro gun back then.

I have definitely noticed this. Any time I've ever had to ask a question on the ar15 sub it's a gamble whether I'll get a helpful response or a bunch of downvotes and sarcastic bs. I remember asking for advice on how to remove a screw at an angle (a screwdriver would not fit this space) and this dude insulted me and told me to "look at the instructions." Like I didn't already do that and consult Google first.
There's been helpful people too though, but the amount of assholes is noticable.
Stayfrosty223@reddit
People can’t properly understand that it’s the lawmakers they should have a problem with instead of the gun owners.
cmd821@reddit
They’ll blame Dems and liberals for voting for this, which is true, but totally close their eyes and ears to the fact there are many other priorities voters may have, especially if a voter sees something they consider human rights/equal rights va gun rights, etc.
sirbassist83@reddit
im with you. i refuse to vote because it feels like im voting against my own interests regardless of party, but i can empathize with people that vote dem despite the gun grabbing, especially if youre queer, black, a woman, etc.
Cosmodeus949@reddit
There are no rights that LGBT, minorities, or women don't have that strait white men do.
Knotted_Hole69@reddit
The sub is overwhelmingly conservative. Thats the answer. Conservatives have always had a hate boner for “liberal” California.
SwoopKing@reddit
Truth. Just look at the "dont california my nevada" or whatever variation of that phrase for your local area.
Its statistics. California has ~40 million people. ~2% of the population changes states every year. Thats 800k out of cali every year vs the the 78k moving out of Iowas 3.9 million population.
Of fucking course you are going to meet more California's who have moved. There's simply more of us.
Knotted_Hole69@reddit
There are more people in California than Canada. It really should be its own nation and cut off these welfare queen red states.
Cosmodeus949@reddit
Please go get fucked by a dog like you are clearly begging to be
lethalmuffin877@reddit
How about we just get down to the bottom of the issue here instead of playing red vs blue games hm?
Democrats have a hate boner for the 2A, democrat voters will happily give up all of our 2A freedoms for just the PROMISE of a minimum wage increase even knowing full well they’re going to get AT MAX a 1$ increase.
You make it sound as though conservatives writ large blindly hate liberals and that’s simply not the case at all. Hell most of us ARE former liberals. What we “hate” is the treatment of constitutional rights as “single issue voting” when it’s 2A but literally any time the right touches something it’s “fascism”.
We have a long longggg list of examples of states flipping blue and the first priority is hardcore gun control, so yeah I think it’s reasonable that gun owners have a lot of criticism for DNC hardliners on the ticket. If you give us someone like fetterman, there is no hate because he (unlike 90% of the liberal party) has the balls to stand up and call out fouls.
This game is not about “hate” it’s about programming people to believe things and using that belief to justify insane policy revisions that end in disarming Americans and forcing us to comply with everything else once they do so.
Have you ever even actually talked to a conservative offline?
FatnessEverdeen34@reddit
I'm in PA and really like our Senate duo. Fetterman is very reasonable
skm_45@reddit
It’s also worth adding that democrats will absolutely not work together with people that own guns. They are zero tolerance when it comes to writing laws that ban guns.
SomeRequirement6926@reddit
And they aren't even writing said laws. Most of them are firearms illiterate. They copy pasta from each other's bans as directed by their financial backers.
lethalmuffin877@reddit
Imagine if they treated gun control as proper training, handling, and proficiency instead of “you can’t have anything but a BB gun, think of the children!”
“We changed our minds, BB guns are too dangerous, banned”
SomeRequirement6926@reddit
Virginia has entered the chat.
FatnessEverdeen34@reddit
For good reason
Stayfrosty223@reddit
I mean it’s well beyond the sub! I’ve seen cali gun owners ostracized on many platforms now regardless of ban compliance too!
skm_45@reddit
Well if that person voted for the lawmakers that wrote the laws, then we should have a problem with it.
RacerXrated@reddit
I haven't seen it and I'm not sure why anyone would hate a person for being from California.

I'm not aware of such hate. Perhaps give an example or take a screen cap on something that demonstrates this?
SpiritAnimalLeroy@reddit
The only California gun owners I dislike are of the same type found in every other state: the ones who effectively think the 2A only protects the right to own deer rifles and bird guns.
Roberto5663@reddit
We dont hate you, your state does
thor561@reddit
Your fathers and grandfathers gave away their rights because they were more afraid of uppity blacks than the government, and now we're all downstream of your legislative sewer pipe. The other leftist shitholes are all trying to one up another while the rest of us are just trying to hold on and hope that the Republicans in our own states don't shit the bed for once and end up handing full control back to Democrats who would love to make my state look like yours.
It's not your fault it got that way in the first place, but goddamn does it seem like gun owners in these ban states are doing fuck-all to keep it from getting in, and frankly I don't trust that gun owners fleeing to more gun friendly states won't eventually start voting for leftists here because you want the government to do more stuff. I don't believe you're enough of single issue voters on this topic to make sure that you're a net benefit for my rights continuing to exist, and not a fairweather friend.
If it makes you feel better, I feel the same way about anyone from any state that has passed or is passing strict gun control laws, so don't take it personal or think it's just a California thing. I simply expect everyone from these states to sell out and comply.
rockmon94@reddit
wtf is an “uppity black”?
skm_45@reddit
Black panthers being the cause of gun control in California
Jaegermeiste@reddit
Black Panthers weren't the cause.
Racism was.
Thanks Mulford! Thanks Reagan! Thanks NRA!
SplashingChicken@reddit
He's referring to the black panther movement, which yes, ultimately resulted in gun rights being stripped because whities on the seat didn't potentially want an insurgency that they were causing and was rightfully justified. A republican introduced and passed an unconstitutional bill that effectively banned the public carrying of firearms.
Given that MLK was assassinated by the FBI barely a year later, I'd say their cause for revolution was justified.

As someone from Illinois, in the IL gun sub we make fun of how you guys seem to actually obey the ban over there for the most part.
Compliance is only like 1% according to the statistics, no one registered anything, and we can buy banned accessories like regular grips from the same store as we’ll buy a rifle with a finned grip 😂 but when someone from CA wanders in asking for advice because we have lots of restrictions to, we are honest and tell them fuck the ban don’t obey it and they call us crazy idiots who must have a desire to end up in prison.
the_duck17@reddit
We comply because they'll make our lives hell even if we do and they're not up to date with the laws.
My buddy went through hell because the stupid ass cop that pulled him over when he was legally transporting his firearms to the range didn't think his fin grip was good enough. Went out of his way to push and mangle the damn thing and said "yeah that's not gonna fly" even though asshole still couldn't wrap his thumb around the grip.
Took him over a year to deal with that, so yeah, we comply and it's sucks. We love guns but we also have lives to live, can't afford this shit if it goes to the lawyers.
NotAGunGrabber@reddit
I've heard cases of cops here jamming an 11th round into a 10 round magazine so hard that the magazine breaks and then saying it holds more than 10 rounds.
AlphaTangoFoxtrt@reddit
Compliance in ban states is overall very low. But most these gun laws are felonies, so people don't go around bragging or posting their guns online.
SentoTheFirst@reddit
A lot of people “comply” in public because all it takes is a cop being an asshole cause you don’t have the right grip on your gun and the state will proceed to fuck you anyway they can.
LeastDerangedNowiFan@reddit (OP)
>and we can buy banned accessories like regular grips from the same store as we’ll buy a rifle with a finned grip
Uh, we already do that too dude. It's not illegal to own combination of parts either. Also isn't your ban way worse since it straight up bans more than CA does when it comes to specific models and attachments. We can still get new 99% of AR/AK/Mini14/M1A variants
A_Queer_Owl@reddit
he seems to think they're better because they're dumb enough to post about their crimes on social media. which is certainly a take.

Thats because California has the highest total population, not because they have an overwhelming amount of republicans. There is about 5.8 million Republicans out of a total 39.4 million people in California. Meanwhile, in Florida there is about 5.5 million Republicans out of a total of 23 million people.
Surely you can understand why that influences peoples perception.
Ach3r0n-@reddit
10.4M registered Dems vs 5.3M registered Republicans. CA hasn't voted for a Republican president since 1988. Ditto for the Senate. 34 of the 53 (now 52) House seats have voted red 6 or less times. Several have never voted red. Red voters in CA are pissing into the wind.

Unfortunately, VA elections are dictated by small high density pockets and funded by out of state mega donors.
And they still only "win" by 1-2% (conveniently) then act like it was an overwhelming mandate from the people.

RecklessHorse@reddit
There are a lot of California gun owners who willingly vote away their rights and vote for higher taxes, act surprised when it happens, move to other states, and repeat the process. Most other states passing shitty gun laws are simply following CAs lead to see what they can get away with.
It is now cheaper for me to drive to Nevada, buy ammo at a big box store, shoot it all (because of course I would never transport ammunition across state lines, no sir), fill up my truck with cheap gas, and drive home than it is to order bulk ammo to CA, drive to my local range and shoot there.
People notice I have stupid CA stuff on my AR at the range in NV and I just say yeah it sucks, voting has consequences, please don’t let it happen here.
I 100% understand why the rest of the country is upset with CA gun owners, by and large we are a bunch of pussies. If we stop this bullshit from happening in CA I guarantee other states will take a step back as well.
Spydude84@reddit
Why don't you just get a comp mag for your rifle if you shoot in NV often? Pop it out once you're in NV and it's perfectly legal.

As an FFL, I'm not going to try and keep up with a million stupid laws your state churns out every year. It could cost me my business to send the wrong gun part or even ammo to the wrong location. I don't have a legal team to help shift through all the crap, and it's not worth it to me to Google for hours on end to figure out if your city, country, or state has specific bans in place for products I'm selling.
Your states gun laws are designed to disarm law abiding citizens, you should not be surprised when that starts working. It just took a little longer than the state wanted.

California gun owners are like that one friend that is married, but knows that his wife is banging multiple other dudes, and doesn't leave her for the kids sake. You like to joke about him with your other friends, but everyone ultimately feels bad for him and wonders why he just doesn't move out...
Averagecrabenjoyer69@reddit

LeastDerangedNowiFan@reddit (OP)
There's also the fun convo of being told to leave the state if you hate the rules, but also to stay in your own hellhole because they don't want you actually moving in next to them lol.
Averagecrabenjoyer69@reddit
Its mostly just blue voters but also a cultural thing too. Californians from a cultural perspective don't tend to assimilate really well to wherever they go. They bring their own version of California and it dilutes the cultural area of the state they go to meaning the politics, accent, values, religion, way of life, locking locals out of houses and land, etc. As much as some people like to push the Pan-American view of "oh everyone is just American, regional culture doesn't matter", turns out a lot of people are quite attached to their regional cultural. Midwesterners and Northeasterners are just as bad about this as well, I mean just look at most any major urban area in the South in the last 20 years. Its just been really bad since Covid with mass migration and Californians have a bad reputation for it.
Ach3r0n-@reddit
That really only applies to the blue voters. It's incredibly frustrating to have the blue voters move in and recreate the place they ran away from in our community. We have people calling the police now for people shooting on their own property. They want "assault weapons" banned, sidewalks put in, front loaders to remove snow, an extra trash pickup day (why?!), a train system, re-zoning for more high-density housing, etc. And they don't care how high the taxes have to be raised to do it. Some townships here have had a 30% property tax increase in just the last 5 years. Vote red? Come on down. Vote blue, go the F home.
