Would you or would you not?

So a buddy of mine and I came up with a hypothetical challenge: For 10 million dollars would you do the dash on your car, from a dead stop 0 mph/kph to whatever your dash tops out at, It has to be your car no one else's, you get to pick the location and time and day to do it, you have 20 min to complete it. Here's the catch: you have a random person that's masked in the car with you, they kill you if you're not able to complete the task, the gun is pointed at you at all times, you have to sustain your max mph/kph for a minimum of 5 seconds also the police are aware of this challenge and the day you are attempting it, they do not know the place you chose or time you chose or what vehicle your in, yes there are/will be random driver/cars on the road (how many depends on location and time) Do you choose to do it?
Small_Sight@reddit
I take it that you think maxing out the speed limiter on most cars out there is hard? This is very easy, just choose the Bonneville salt flats
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Most cars struggle after a certain MPH/KPH some might have supercars that can reach the dash easy some may be highly confident of their cars but uncertain.
Equivalent_Thievery@reddit
"Reach the dash"
This is almost a nonsense statement. Do you mean, have the needle go all the way to the end of the numbers? Or point all the way down?
What is it you're trying to say?
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
My mistake, reach the top most MPH/KPH number that's on your speedometer
Equivalent_Thievery@reddit
In my current car, no. It goes to 160mph and the car will only do a little better than 140.
I did have a geo metro with a 1.0 that had a speedometer which went up to 85mph, I went well past it on a mountain road; probably +95mph.
IndependentShocker@reddit
I had the 1.3l geo, tailing my buddy’s Tacoma he said we got up to 110mph. He could have been lying but it was fast for the car.
Equivalent_Thievery@reddit
My 1.0 5spd topped out at maybe 90 on a flat, maybe. I once had a Saturn come around to pass me, clip my mirror off, then run. There wasn't shit I could do, they were going like 105-110 and I had my foot planted so hard that it hurt but the Saturn slowly walked away.
Though I did average 45mpg and got 56mpg when deploying a stupid amount of hypermile tricks.
unwilling_viewer@reddit
There's virtually nothing on the market that will do that. Probably less than 1% of cars on the market.
In some markets it was/may still be a homologation requirement to have a margin above your rated top speed.
Hell I took one of my (faster) personal cars to the fuel cut out in top gear, still another 7 mph to hit the max on the speedo.
Have done the same lots of times at work too.
IndependentShocker@reddit
“Do the dash on your car” lol people are retarded.
Sad_Win_4105@reddit
We used to call it Burying the Speedometer.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
Most of my cars have been electronically limited to less than the speedometer shows.
I had one car, a 91 suburban, that the numbers stopped at 140 and I probably got about 160 going down a big hill.
I had another car, an 07 Daihatsu Copen, where it was electronically limited to 130 and the speedometer only went to 130. That was frustratingly low, but it was nice that they lined up with eachother.
dazzlezak@reddit
As long as it's dry.
happy_Amphibian_88@reddit
Hum..... Yeah, I go buy a 1987 Mustang GT, go on interstate 10 in L.A. anytime and do 85 mph for 5 secs. Sure, easy 10 million bucks.
That car's dashboard tops out at 85 mph.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Nope can't buy😂 the car you have right now lol
happy_Amphibian_88@reddit
You said your car.... stop changing rules ! Lol
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Right! Your car! Not a car that you can own!
Realistic-March-5679@reddit
It’s not all that hard, I hit the limit of 120MPH on the highway for fun sometimes in my 144HP NA Impreza. And it’s a win win either way I don’t have to go to work any more.
Hot_Salamander164@reddit
What the dash tops out at, or what the car mechanically tops out at? The first is probably impossible for many cars.
swthrowaway0106@reddit
I mean my dash shows 260kmh but my governor is around 215kmh (130mph). Ungoverned it doesn’t really have issues sustaining 260kmh based off of videos I’ve seen online in other regions. Yeah this should be easy enough on a highway at night.
420hashmore@reddit
Plenty of JDM cars are limited to 180kmph and the I’ll get there fast as fuck.
Justaviewer10@reddit
I have I Japanese imported Lexus that the Speedo (and car) is electronically limited at 180km/h (120mph ish) and I have plenty of power to get there. I would do this easily. The North American left hand drive variant of my car has a dash up to 260km/h and this car can probably reach close to that so 180km/h would be a breeze
stonewall028@reddit
i mean yeah? its not that hard to hit 8200 rpm and 120mph in my integra, im usually dancing around 75% of that daily
Eziekiel23_20@reddit
Do i get 10mil for each car that can do it?
120 isnt too hard in a couple if them, and as long as my gmc doesnt discharge its driveshaft it’d be game too.
Digital dashes kinda screw this whole game up too.
BlutarchMannTF2@reddit
Just do it on the autobahn?
Dinglebutterball@reddit
I already do this once or twice a week on the empty highway on my way to work. Bang shifting through the gears and laying patch wakes you up better than coffee. LoL.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
You do your whole dash? That's impressive!
Dinglebutterball@reddit
Speedo goes to 120… 4th gear at 5500 maths out to ~135…
Sad_Win_4105@reddit
Most speedometers are marked far higher than they can actually go. When I was growing up, a car might have a speedometer maxing at 120 or 140, when actual top speed might have been maybe 90 or 100mph. This was to give the potential buyer the impression that they were much faster than they actually were. The ability to bury the speedometer was usually mythical.
I'll pass.
ber808@reddit
My car has 4.11s lol max speed is 170ish
Insertsociallife@reddit
Does it have to be actual speed, or speedometer reading? Not a chance my Fit could actually do 140 mph, but throw some tiny wheels on and I bet I could bury the needle.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Speedometer reading lol
Puzzleheaded_Foot954@reddit
I'd do this in a heartbeat. I currently drive a '68 vw bug with a 2180 cc, dual carbs and built transmission. Speedometer is stock and goes to 90 mph. Give me any freeway at midnight and I'll do it in about a half mile.
Hard_Head@reddit
3am on a deserted interstate. Sure. Why not.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Cops still out, might not be deserted at the time you pick, and usually deserted highways have horrible roads
Hard_Head@reddit
3am on a deserted interstate. Sure. Why not. Freeways and interstates around here are in decent shape and usually 6 lanes each way.
I don’t care about the cops - once challenge is complete, I’ll pull over and take my ticket.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
😂😂 you'd be in jail lol, but the court room would be hilarious "why were you going that fast" "because it was either die or win 10 million"
Hard_Head@reddit
Nah, they don’t lock people up for misdemeanor traffic stuff in LA. Probably just a citation. Maybe reckless driving at worst.
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
How is that even a question?
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Because it's easier said than done. Gun to you, cops on the look out. Random people on the road, the health of your car, if it can even do the dash, the condition of the road, etc.
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
It wouldn't be that hard at all.
I could drive 2 hours away and not see another person for miles and miles.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
But what are the conditions of the roads that far out? Usually roads farther away from lesser populated area are poor/dirtier/pothole-y
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
Very flat, and long.
You need to remember, not everyone lives in yank land :)
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
That is true lol
Asleep_Current912@reddit
sure, 20-30 seconds to make $10m? what’s the challenging part?
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Gun to you, cops knowing to look for you, other cars on the road, your car physical not able to do it🤷🤷
Asleep_Current912@reddit
you get to pick the time and place and have 20 minutes to sustain top dash speed for 5 seconds? Racetrack, private airfield, autobahn, 99% of highways in America. Even if the cops got me after on public roads I still have $10m? What’s the challenge?
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
All the other variables that come into play. A lot of vehicles arnt made to do their whole dash so that's the challenge I guess knowing if your car can do it and sustain it for 5 seconds. 5 seconds doesn't seem like a long time but when your going 160+ mph anything can happen. Engine blows, tires pop, etc. 20 min seems like a long time but to find a straight path that's smooth enough to sustain that without any interruptions is close to impossible unless your cars built for it
Asleep_Current912@reddit
your hypothetical falls apart when you get to choose the time and place, I don’t mean to shit in your cheerios but there’s no stakes at that point, just the easiest $10m of your life and a really good pull.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Oh no your not shitting on them at all😂 it's just curiosity to me that's all. Time and place all play a factor as well. Just because one day the area you chose is perfect doesn't mean it will be the next, time as well. Most cars now-a-days have a dash that reads from ide say 140?160?+ Also other variables play as well like if the cars geared for that speed of the engine/trans can sustain at that speed/stress for 5 seconds. I know this doesn't compare but top speed dragsters reach well over 200mph in a 1/4 of a mile for less than 4 sec but the engine gets rebuilt just about every pass
Bleades@reddit
It's not hard at all.
ktappe@reddit
My car is electronically limited to a speed lower than the maximum indicated on the speedo. It’s rather annoying and something I didn’t find out until after I bought it.
pdxarchitect@reddit
My boxster has a speedo that goes to 180. I seriously doubt that speed is possible in the car.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
That's 99% of vehicles now a days
4158264146@reddit
I think one issue many would have would be the governor. Idk the mph listed on my car or what the governor limit it, I'd assume 110mpg. Gauge is probably 120 so I'm out.
EquivalentCanary8243@reddit
The real challenge isn't the speed; it's finding a road long enough to hit top speed and hold it for 5 seconds without hitting a pothole or a minivan.
ricerbanana@reddit
Do I get to prep my car or does it have to go as is?
I’ll do it in my cls55 if I get do to a little prep work first, nothing major and no power mods. I’d put on new tires and lower the suspension and head to the salt flats.
JackofallPPs@reddit (OP)
Car as it sits
