Fuel type in rental car?
Posted by Kedgey_55@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 37 comments
Hello. Just rented a hire car and looking to fill up with gas. It is a Mitsubishi Mirage. I'm pretty sure it's petrol and not diesel but can anyone confirm this? There is no manual in the car and no info on the fuel cap. I can't find any info about fuel type anywhere else in the car. Can anyone help before I look very stupid and ask a guy in the petrol station?!
HoldingThunder@reddit
It will say inside the gas tank cover or in the owners manual.

RTFI- Read the Fucking Instructions. They usually live in the glove box and are written in several languages for good measure.
One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
OP clearly stated in the post description that there is no manual in glove box.
CampDogDingo@reddit
OK- well here it is online. Don't even have to open a glove box...

Okay... doesn't matter to me, as A: I don't have a Mirage and B: They never made a diesel powered Mirage to begin with.
The OP is somewhere where they call gasoline petrol so that info may not have been available to them.
I dunno, generally a diesel vehicle will be labeled "diesel only" on the fuel cap or fuel door.
CampDogDingo@reddit
... so maybe they should RTFI...
One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
Can't RTFI if they're not there or available.
CampDogDingo@reddit
Not available? I found them with a google search... much quicker than posting on Reddit 🤷‍♂️

Not everywhere in the world has the same access to the same information on the web.
You can pull it up, I can too. But someone in some other country or different part of tbe world may not be able to believe it or not.
We have no idea what the OP can access.
They plainly said they used Google and apparently came up with an answer that said petrol was the fuel of choice for that POS Mirage but they didn't trust the answer, hense, they asked here with people who are more knowledgable about vehicles.
Don't exactly see the big deal.
HenryLoggins@reddit
It’s listed on the decal inside the fuel door.

This is funny to me because about 5 years back I was helping a friend shop for her first car and we ended up test driving a Mirage and I remember it so clearly. The first time she accelerated I commented on how it sounds like a diesel school bus lol. And it was a brand new car
No she didn’t end up buying it
Hash-82@reddit
>> ...how it sounds like a diesel school bus...
I got all excited about the new Toyota Crown when it came out.
Test drove one.
Said the same thing about it.
Hash-82@reddit
Sniff it...
Sniff it real good.
One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
There is no diesel verion of the Mirage.
Gasoline (petrol) only.
LieLevel7361@reddit
I never rent a car without massive sticker on fuel tank saying what it is.
Class_C_Guy@reddit
You've come to the wrong place to avoid the looking stupid part
bad_bitch_energy@reddit
Diesel for towing, gasoline for regular driving 👍

open the hood and look for spark plugs if it has it's gas
bmxracers@reddit
Are we allowed to speak our minds here? I’ll assume not and just not say anymore.
Dramatic_Metal4039@reddit
What’s the redline on the rpm gauge?
AdditionSelect7250@reddit
Well I'm pretty sure they only do them as petrol so that would be a good start
overcatastrophe@reddit
Diesel
CompetitiveBox314@reddit
Smell fuel tank.
Occams_RZR900@reddit
If the fuel cap doesn’t say “Diesel fuel only” it’s not a diesel.
MaximumDerpification@reddit
Grab the diesel pump and try to stick it in. If it doesn't fit, it's not diesel.
Spoiler alert: It's not diesel.
Agile_Boysenberry508@reddit
Most cars have a label inside the fuel door or on the cap.
doobersthetitan@reddit
Should have a def tank if diesel...and a def gauge
RobertISaar@reddit
What do you see when you open the fuel door?
Kedgey_55@reddit (OP)
Nothing other than a note about how to open the cap
RobertISaar@reddit
Odd, usually there's fuel requirements there.
What kind of redline is on the tachometer?
owensurfer@reddit
Open the hood and look for ignition coils (petrol) or injector rail (diesel). If you google search the VIN you should get feedback on the engine identifier too.
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
They don't even need to do that.
There is no diesel version of this car.
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
I assume you already did a quick Google search to see if a diesel model even exists at all?
Or should I assume you haven't even done that, since you're asking the question?
Kedgey_55@reddit (OP)
I had looked yes...but never sure if that is 100% accurate...
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
Yep, so the easy thing is that there is no diesel model.

Just put whatever you want in it mateÂ
