Jesus Was Way Cool
ordinarilymissy@reddit
Oddly enough, this still gets played semi regularly on my local station in Seattle KEXP. I kind of thought it might never have gone away but maybe it’s different in Seattle…
rqx82@reddit
It is different, KEXP is one of the best radio stations in the country. If they all had such compelling, curated content, streaming might never have taken hold, as least as much as it has now.
ordinarilymissy@reddit
You’re absolutely right. I hear so many of these forgotten songs on KEXP, ya know.
Ginger630@reddit
Omg I just thought of this song a few minutes ago while thinking about how I’d love detachable boobs.
pxFloof@reddit
I immediately came here to say this. Thank you honourable warrior, therustysmear.
Shanntuckymuffin@reddit
Never forget
djseifer@reddit
That's how the singer got into that mess in the first place.
emotyofform2020@reddit
Why is this song inextricably linked to Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo?
todreamofspace@reddit
Z100 played this so much. We heard it every afternoon on the middle school bus ride home for weeks. Quite amusing!
ArtaxWasRight@reddit
omg there will never be radio like Z100 circa 1993.
Dr. Judy taught me everything a boy should know. And quite a bit more.
Seven22am@reddit
First saw this while Beavis and Butthead were watching the video.
SlatheredButtCheeks@reddit
Same. Amazing video, amazing show
HomelessKitchenCat@reddit
The first time i heard this song as a little kid was incredibly bewildered and intrigued

BorderlinePaisley@reddit
That song got me into BB King.
hypothermicyeti@reddit
Lemon parade - tonic
SplakyD@reddit
"You Wanted More" by Tonic
critical_patch@reddit
“If You Could Only See” was my garage band’s go-to “reel in the girls” song that we’d play acoustic at house parties when everyone’s speech was slurring and it was time to seal the deal 🤦🏻♀️😄
GenevieveLeah@reddit
I was obsessed with this album.
ScientistAsHero@reddit
I always loved "Open Up Your Eyes" by them.
Roobix9@reddit
What about "Laid" by James?
citrus_sugar@reddit
And then Better Than Ezra did an awesome cover of this too that was at the top of my Spotify for a few weeks.
littlemsshiny@reddit
Oooh, interesting! Speaking of covers, have you listened to Chris Cornell’s version Nothing Compared 2 U? Amazing.
citrus_sugar@reddit
And then Better Than Ezra did an awesome cover of this too that was at the top of my Spotify for a few weeks.
critical_patch@reddit
Ahhh man I haven’t thought about this song in years! Nice cut!
mikec231027@reddit
I saw them live at the last Lollapalooza when it was still a proper tour around 97. It was James, Jacob Marley, Korn, Snoop, Tool, and Devo. Such a great concert!
Which-Grapefruit724@reddit
This song is sooo good! So is the b-side of the single, " Say Something"!

Sudo_Incognito@reddit
As a vegetarian this song was put on every mix tape given to me by clueless dudes trying to hit on me in the mid to late 90s.
ArtaxWasRight@reddit
oh shit mary moe! potent gen x vibes
even when they’re serving quirk, gen x straight guys always seem like lowkey dicks. at best adorable and awful in equal measure.
MoonlitBlossoms@reddit
Guster - “Fa Fa”
Sneaker Pimps - “6 Underground”
The Wallflowers - “6th Avenue Heartache”
Eve6 - “Promise”
Holly McNarland - “Numb”
PickledPixie83@reddit
I loved that whole Poe album.
FethB@reddit
I still regularly listen to “6th Avenue Heartache”
critical_patch@reddit
Their cover of Heroes is what got me into David Bowie
mikec231027@reddit
I'm a huge Poe fan. Haunted is also an amazing song from her.
sped2500@reddit
Damn, Fa Fa is such a sick track. The way the crescendo comes in with the horns is just...chefs kiss
18randomcharacters@reddit
6 underground is so good
ArtaxWasRight@reddit
aww, Guster. I’m not sure I could handle ‘Happier’ right now. 🥺

Had no idea these guys were from Champaign
ianmakingnoise@reddit
it’s wild the revival this song has had (hum’s newest album Inlet is incredible btw)
lil_grey_alien@reddit
Cool I’ll have to check it out!!
avalonfaith@reddit
Was just hanging out with my 20 yo son, TWENTY!, driving me, DRIVING ME!, around and him and his girlfriend are suuuuper into Hum. Scored so many cool mom points for being like yeah, *son name wasn't even a twinkle in my ovary's when I was listening to this.
DefinitionSuperb1110@reddit
This was mine and my post HS girlfriend's song. I just heard it the other day and immediately thought of her. Musical triggers are amazing.
Jr5309@reddit
Save Yourself - Stabbing Westward
Thamnophis660@reddit
Shame and What do I Have to Do are also awesome songs. That whole album is great. These songs got such heavy air on the radio, I thought this band was going to be much bigger than they were.
Still have the cassette too.
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
Got to see them in a local club right before they broke up for $3. Was a really good concert!
serialflakes@reddit
Their “new” (it’s a few years old at this point) album is solid. Give it a listen if you haven’t. Saw them play two years ago, and it was the best show I’ve ever been to in my life.
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
I haven't heard the new stuff. Ex-Roommate was a huge fan (to the point that Christopher even knows who he is) so I've heard all the old stuff, some of Chris' solo stuff, but I think he'd moved out before the new stuff came out.
I'll look into it! I've been listening to showtunes almost exclusively lately and haven't really paid much attention to new music. Most of it is garbage anyway. lol
SheWasAlwaysJody@reddit
What do I have to Do? Is my personal favorite of theirs.
tribbleorlfl@reddit
It's wild I could have sworn it did better than it did in the charts, because the music video received heavy rotation on MTV and on my local rock station.
I had nearly forgotten about it because it's not on the '96 Billboard Top 100 and the highest it did was like 6 on the Modern Rock charts.
upvotesforkitties@reddit

The grip that video had on me….
TemporaryArm6419@reddit
I love Shakespeare’s Sister!
ArtaxWasRight@reddit
Marcella Detroit would later play the Angel in AbFab’s Last Shout (1996). Her rendition of Oh Happy Day at the end is just incredibly amazing.
Roobix9@reddit
Good one. Love this song.
lueur-d-espoir@reddit
When I first saw this with a friend it was so dramatic and serious we didn't know what to think and were kinda stunned until the one girl started making crazy evil? faces in the music video and we absolutely lost our shit laughing.
We would act out parts for years after mostly when someone was acting dead tired like they couldn't get up start pulling on them and singing dramatic and making crazy girl faces.
MoonlitBlossoms@reddit
I love “Stay,” it’s so good. Their other single “I Don’t Care” was also really good.
ScreenSensitive9148@reddit
I had the whole album! I really liked it. They were a solid group/duo
enoui@reddit
Hello (Turn Your Radio On) was great too.
Always meant to turn it into a Doctor Who music video.

In addition to Nad Surf's "Popular," which was already mentioned, I love their song "Always Love"

avalonfaith@reddit
Samsies. Then came Bjork, Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack, thievery Corp, marcheeba....on and on!
In the US but have been super luck to have seen almost all on the list. Was a bit obsessed. The. Came that nice ethereal house, like that Swedish style Plej, is a grey example. Ugh! I try and listen to newer artists but it doesn't hit me like that.
q120@reddit
Ahh gotta love Morcheeba!
-Midnight_Marauder-@reddit
Fatboy Slim mix of Brimful of Asha 👌
MrGreen17@reddit
I still hear this fairly often on the radio. Now from the same time period how about Jimmy Ray “Who Wants to Know”?
delldarlin@reddit
Jimmy Ray completely missed me somehow, I think the first time I heard it was the One Hit Wonderland episode
itsmiddylou@reddit
That’s one of my alarm songs. I freaking love that song
FALSE_PROTAGONIST@reddit
My first single I ever bought. Must have listened to this on repeat a million times on my brothers cd Walkman

Ahhhhh, Green Jelly, up on the list of my runaway from home albums in the car. 😂
c_b0t@reddit
I just played this for my kid 2 days ago.
When I was in jr high, my friend called me and told me to put on a specific radio station so I could hear this song. I didn't change the station back and thus my musical preferences for the rest of my life were shaped.

ArtaxWasRight@reddit
I’m Too Sexy is an era-defining song tho. I streamed it a few weeks ago and was just so delighted. That is the sound of an awesome mood.

TSGarp007@reddit
Wish I had more upvotes to give you.
MoonlitBlossoms@reddit
Weird to get downvoted for someone not making the correlation.
tribbleorlfl@reddit
It's funny, I was just putting to get a "Class of '98" playlist last week and realized how many songs I liked and were popular on the radio aren't on the Billboard Top 100. Meanwhile, there are a bunch of songs on there towards the bottom I'd never heard before!
Turns out, there are tons of forgotten Xennial songs you have to turn to the Hot Ariplay, weekly charts or Modern Rock to find.
Three of my favorite songs during highschool:
"Mighty Kc" For Squirrels "Radiation Vibe" Fountains of Wayne "Long Day" Matchbox 20

borkbork234@reddit
Both of these albums are masterpieces. The refreshments first one is in my top ten of all time.
ShowMeYourHappyTrail@reddit
Anyone remember Gravity Kills? Their cover of Personal Jesus was so good, but their actual music was good too!

God Lives Underwater - "All Wrong"
HomelessKitchenCat@reddit
I was a big God Lives Underwater fan and i threw one of the members AOL emails in my AIM Chat. I would hit him up sometimes and we would have conversations. I was about 13 at the time it was super cool for me ha

All the music on my playlists are technically Gen X. Well, that's not entirely true. I have some Boomer tunes as well, but mostly Gen X. Mid-90s and earlier for me.
jmac11281@reddit
Take my upvote. Most of my music is from the 50s to the mid-90s. I have stuff from this millenia but I prefer the older stuff.

They should have really been bigger. "And Fools Shine On" is a great song, but that whole album is simply awesome. Great songwriting, arrangements, musicianship, and Damon Johnson os a great front man.
