Good lord, I just ate a Griffs hamburger based on this sub. The debate is OVER!
Posted by Askmeaboutmy_Beergut@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 245 comments
Run....don't walk and get a number 4 and 2 apple pies and have your mind blown.
I will never eat a hamburger from another establishment. There's Griffs on top of the hill and everyone else at the bottom on their knees chanting "We're not worthy, We're not worthy!" That was hands down the best fast food burger I've ever had.
The apple pies are what everyone is always going on about how "McDonald's apple pies USED to be sooo good!" They are FRIED, bubbly, crispy and full of apple and filling.
I have drove by this place for 5 years and never stopped. Decided to try it tonight and basically sat at the table feeling so stupid for not trying them before. Jesus I sound like a corporate shill here.
Thank you guys. The debate has finally been settled of who has the best burger. Not even close either!
favorthebold@reddit
OK, but have you tried Keller's drive-in? The real one, not one of the fakes.
StrLord_Who@reddit
The garland one is awesome and not "fake"
favorthebold@reddit
Yes, it is. If I'm remembering right the fake one is on Harry Hines blvd.
Covri@reddit
The garland one tastes the same as the NW highway one. Can't speak on the HH location tho.
blucivic1@reddit
They are good. Haven't been in years bc I hate that in your face feeling of having to tip when I order to go. Jake's around the corner has been my go to.
KCJ4Tx@reddit
The original Griff was a reactionary John Bircher, hated Blacks, Hispanics and hippies. He'd throw men with long hair out of the store. His was the first business I ever saw someone (Griff) epoxy a quarter to the floor, back when a quarter bought something. He'd laugh at people trying to figure out how to pick it up. Did serve a good burger, though. I thought they were better at Keller Drive In, but that's just me.
ummyeahok42@reddit
Growing up in Pleasant Grove as a hispanic, I went to Griffs there and remember the owner Jesse providing an excellent experience every time he was there.
slick2400@reddit
I think you are thinking of Goff's. And yes that guy was an ass.
ummyeahok42@reddit
I grew up eating Griffs living in Pleasant Grove. Then they built one in Mesquite as well, and now that I live in Garland I learned there's one in Richardson to my delight. Its truly a hidden gem, old school style spot that I love not just cause of the taste, but the memories.
ghentwevelgem@reddit
Dels Charburger has entered the chat
nchs1120@reddit
I’m so confused by the Dels hype. Must have been a bad day because it was so charred/well done it ruined it. Guess I need to give it another chance
Few-Leadership7674@reddit
Del's did have a great burger. Hasn't been as good since 'Del' retired.
boosted32vee@reddit
This right here, it used to be good when Del owened/ran it, not worth the trip these days.
Griffs is still legit and better than the big three FF burger places and more affordable too.
If you want a wood fire charred cooked burger then Kenny's burgers in Plano & Frisco is the place to go.
Elbandito78@reddit
Fully agree. Kenny’s is def one of the best burgers around if you like the flame grilled taste. Love that place
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
Yeah, the best places have the best cooks. Skyrocket off Coit. Ye Old Butcher Shop in downtown Plano. The Lower Greenville location of Pints & Quarts (RIP).
There's nothing particularly fancy about any of these places, except the consistency of the people making your burger being really good at their job.
MooseMe23@reddit
I must have gone on a really bad day but at Kenny’s they sent out a disgustingly rare burger that was also incredibly gristly. I’m not one to complain but when I asked for it to be re-done the second burger came out the exact same. My partners burger was cooked fine but also gristly. I’ve never had an experience like that before and it really soured me, I’ll never be back :(
boosted32vee@reddit
Wow, thats rare (no pun) ive been going there for years. One or twice a month, ive only ever had one bad burger and it was over cooked. I like my burgers medium to medium well. They cooked it correctly and gave us a $10.00 coupon for the next visit.
Few-Leadership7674@reddit
I've eaten at Del's may tomes, at Griff's once, but I prefer the Tavernburger at the Tavern on Main Street.
number2stunna@reddit
Real ones know this. Also their ribeye special is 🤌🏼🤌🏼
number2stunna@reddit
Hoss did a good job but haven’t seen him in a long time. Think his son runs it now which may be the reason for the decline
Geoffrey-Jellineck@reddit
Nah I've eaten there a few times and have never been that impressed by their burgers. They don't even make their own onion rings. I think people are blinded by the nostalgia/legacy. Good root beer though.
monkeyman80@reddit
Chargrilled isn’t as common anymore. I’ve eaten more than a few people’s shares of burgers of all types and I like them every now and then
Smooth_Read_3495@reddit
Yeah, root beer float was solid .. burger was average.
nchs1120@reddit
Ahh interesting Maybe it’s just old school taste place where well done is the “correct” way to make a burger. Would definitely be willing to give it another shot though. Every place has bad moments
RevolutionaryCup8480@reddit
Their burgers are not bad but it’s not in the top five for burgers in Dallas IMO
SirWillingham@reddit
It’s overrated for sure but it’s a local joint and good enough but not worth to go out of your way for.
bikerdude214@reddit
Dels is way overrated. I will never eat there again. I like the rootbeer an that's all.
SoyEseVato@reddit
Del’s doesn’t even compare to Griff‘s. You’ll understand when you try Del’s. I’ve enjoyed both for over 20 years.
ApplicationHour@reddit
Excellent burger. Don Burger in S. Garland is better.
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
Different category.
davwad2@reddit
Dels is pretty good. I used to go there once every blue moon with my coworkers.
librarykerri@reddit
OMG, they have fried CHERRY pies. I need to go.
whytakemyusername@reddit
I can't grasp how so many people vouch for this place. I've tried it over and over to try to understand. They're absolute shit.
Wholenchilada@reddit
Dels sucks.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
Since we’re in the same general area, I’ll toss out Rick’s on Plano Rd.
Basic no-fuss spot with a solid burger. Nothing fancy or special, and sometimes that’s all I need.
rickyroca73@reddit
Dels is overrated as fuck. Griffs is solid for a burger joint that’s been around forever. I put Dels a notch above only because it isn’t a chain.
PersonalFinanceFun@reddit
Del’s was not the best when I was last there 6 months ago.
TX727@reddit
THIS! Del's is a holy experience! Burger, the fries....and you know what is coming....THAT COLD MUG ROOT BEER!!! There is a not a near better experience than this!
For me, you would never think this small box, over fancy bigger places, can put out a great burger. You Sir/Ma'am, are so wrong!
Inevitable-Ad-90@reddit
Don’t even argue wit em…….PLEASE don’t blow up da spot. Stay at Griffs yall!
Askmeaboutmy_Beergut@reddit (OP)
No way jose!
I live 2 miles from them and have had them dozens of times. Yes they are good but they are dry to me. I'll say this.
I'll never go back to another burger place. Those apple pies were a grand slam homerun and Dels doesn't have those.
Potential-Peace-9701@reddit
The best burgers in Dallas and in no particular order
Burger schmurger Knox bistro Doda Not a damn chance Perry’s Bar sardine Hamburgottis Maple and motor Meridian
Griffs , dels , these places don’t hold a candle to the above
slick2400@reddit
Incorrect. Hamburgott's > Burger schmurger. Griffs isnt a smash so I dont put it in the same ring with those guys. But hands down Griffs deserves to be in any conversation about best burger.
slick2400@reddit
Thank You!!!! I too have been making the claim to anyone that will listen.

Don't sleep on John's Backyard Grill inside the Chevron in North Dallas.
boosted32vee@reddit
Man, you delete this immediately! Its the one secret in Dallas that I wont tell ANYONE about!
mrslipple@reddit
Haha, I get it. As good as the burgers are, have you had the fries? Hand cut and fried perfect then a squeeze of lime and tajin. Perfection.
boosted32vee@reddit
STOP IT, RIGHT NOW!
Haydeeeen@reddit
Hey OP. I just went and checked it out today because of this post and I'd have to agree it is now probably my favorite fast food burger

cramothmasterson@reddit
Have you guys tried Whataburger yet?
boosted32vee@reddit
Dude, Whataburger is not the same once the family sold it to the conglomerate of Chicago. Its gone waaay downhill.
Sistinas777@reddit
You ain’t ate nothing until you have a burger at Wingfield’s off S Beckley ave. You are welcome.
boosted32vee@reddit
You forgot to tell the good people of Dallas that they will need to bring two handguns, a long gun and dont go after dark. Though they do make an excellent burger, but for safety purposes I wait until they are at the State Fair of Texas and pay $18.00 for their burger, worth every penny.
Double_Reply1407@reddit
Was about to comment about Wingfield’s when I saw this. Isn’t it like a 1.5lb patty or something ridiculous? Only burger I hadn’t been able to finish.
stykface@reddit
Grew up on Griffs over by West Mesquite High School where Scyene and Military Parkway merge. Been eating there for 35 years. It's by far the best fast food burger, hands down.
Keep in mind it's not a "gourmet burger" like JG's, Rodeo Goat, etc. so it's unfair to judge it against those places, but for a drive thru, it's the best, period and there is no debate.
boosted32vee@reddit
Exactly, im not saying they are the best, but they are better than the big three and Jack too (jitb).
If I want a nice sit down burger, then ill hit up Kenny's, Maple & Motor, Rocket, Ye Old Buchershop, etc.
AlBundysPants@reddit
Griffs is legit. Been going since I was a kid. Onion rings are good too.

NTPC4@reddit
Here's my Griff's story. I had driven past it 100s of times, and finally, during the pandemic, as I was leaving the Home Depot, I decided I had to have a burger. I got in line at the drive-thru and was amazed at how fast they were serving customers, but when it was my turn, all they had to say was, 'Sorry, we're out of hamburger.' What a buzz-kill :-(((
independant_786@reddit
Wife and I saw a recent video about unknown burger chains and would love to try Griffs and Kellers
biancaseantae@reddit
Dylan! Made me want to try Griffs and Kellers.
independant_786@reddit
Haha yess!
nomadschomad@reddit
Let’s talk about Keller’s – different locations are owned by different family members, and there is a wide wide variety quality
The one on NW Highway headed towards Lakewood is a fantastic.
The one on Harry Hines is nasty
whytakemyusername@reddit
That's interesting. Another spot I hear amazing things about but it's always been terrible. I've only tried the harry hines one though.
nomadschomad@reddit
Yup. Go to NW Hwy or apparently Garland.
Covri@reddit
The one in garland is as good as the NW highway one. Never had the harry hines one.
StrLord_Who@reddit
It's definitely as good, plus they have those awesome little pies at that one
Primary_Excuse_7183@reddit
Yep NW highway was my first taste and i was blown away 😂 so good i ate the burger in the car and got one to go.
independant_786@reddit
Oh wow thanks so much for the location recommendation because we are planning to visit Kellers and wasn't sure which location to visit for the first time
Same_Option2638@reddit
Ha ha. It's not nasty but definitely not brag worthy either. I work a few miles away and eat there every now and then.
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
NW Hwy location for life.
nomadschomad@reddit
I’ve been many times. But one day I was meeting friends to dance at Cowboys and stopped at the HH one to grab a bite. I think it’s in the top five nastiest things you could find to eat on HH.
Askmeaboutmy_Beergut@reddit (OP)
I love Kellers also but Griffs made me mad that today was my 1st time in 20 years to try them. I was literally angry at myself as I sat there eating.
TheSneakyShoe@reddit
Kellers is great, especially the drive in location on NW highway
Dense_Sun_6119@reddit
WTF? All the great restaurants in Dallas and you’re talking like this about a fast food restaurant??? Let’s grow up and eat a burger from a real restaurant
MissusSnowMiser@reddit
That’s hilarious, I recently on a total whim tried them out too recently and they are absolutely delicious.

Gotta check it out the way you talking lol
pistachiodisguysee@reddit
Braum’s is an underrated one, try it out!
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I agree! I don’t know why you got a downvote, lol.
If we’re talking fast food burgers, Braum’s is definitely top of the list for a chain, IMO
Wrong_Assistance7096@reddit
Because it's not underrated lol
Ninja_Conspicuousi@reddit
I’m still shocked by how good their burgers are. And frankly, their bag of burgers is the best value of the major fast food chains.

Ive never heard of griffs or skyrocket, but ive been to tons of burger places in Dallas. Porky’s Burgers & Wings is our favorite, they hands down have the best burger and french fries. Their wings are great too.
Compared against the following: Edmonds burgers and more - (best patty melt, but not burger) Kenny’s burger joint - (great burger but pricy. Might be better but id need to go back and try a second time before making the claim) Maple and motor Keller’s Dairy-ette Dels charcoal burgers Flaming burger Rodeo goat Burger house Olive burger
Fun_Web_4670@reddit
Theyre ok.. Burger Smurger in white rock is better.

Sky Rocket has some of the best smash burgers in Texas. Everything's fresh, and their secret sauce is the best you can put on a burger. Just make sure you go to the Coit Road location!
trumenblack1975@reddit
More like sky rocket in deep ellum
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
It's fine. Every other location of Sky Rocket is fine. But the crew at the Coit location just are better at cooking burgers.
Askmeaboutmy_Beergut@reddit (OP)
Yeah they look good. I'll try them next. Can't believe they're gonna beat Griffs. Griffs apple pies tipped me over the edge. But the burger was just awesome.
DigBickTomm@reddit
I’ve had it before but Griff’s is still on top for me
MadManAndrew@reddit
I’m just trying to figure out what other burgers you’ve had that puts Griffs at the top. Are you ranking it against McDonald’s and Burger King?? Nobody has ever said griffs is the best burger you can get, just that it’s good for a drive thru……..
Mercy_Rule_34@reddit
my brother in christ, fried apple pies, as amazing as they are, cannot be used as the measuring device for the best burger, Isaiah 55:2
gorampardos@reddit

They're better. No apple pies, but much better burger.
Covri@reddit
Tell me what's good about sky burger, I'm intrigued. What is their secret sauce? What would be a first timers order? I'll hang up and listen.
monkeyman80@reddit
There’s nothing out of the ordinary, everything is just executed well. Juicy burger, fresh veggies, toasted bun all made to order.
Indication5151@reddit
It’s just a good hearty burger. And very consistent, which is key. They’re responsible for my high cholesterol
CrackRockBaddie@reddit
I’ve never been but a first timers order at any burger place should be a #1 and a coke.
dobbydillber@reddit
Go to the coit/bush location. Talk to them at the counter that it’s your first time. It’s good food lol don’t overthink it too much
dobbydillber@reddit
coit/bush sky rocket might have this person coming back to delete this
SirWillingham@reddit
Best smash burger for sure. Best burger for me is Maple and Motor. But skyrocket is top tier for sure.
Honestly two different types of burgers if these were pizzas it would like tavern style vs Neapolitan. Two different styles and both equally good.

I've got a Griff's out near downtown Ft. Worth.
Usually get a #1 with onion rings, and a fried pie.
They're good....but boy do I feel crummy about a half-hour after eating one.
I run to In-and-Out when I really want a burger now, simply because I don't need the fries/tots/rings, and I don't feel bloated and heavy after their burgers. Animal style all the way.
Griff's does do the best deserts though....cause the floats and fried pies really can't be beat.

donsanedrin@reddit
I used to eat at that Griff's in Garland fairly regularly about 10 years ago. I liked them well enough, but I actually think I got turned off because they were making their patties too thick and it carried to much grease.
I now eat at the Griffs in Irving, and oh my god, are those burgies just cooked perfectly.
Only at that location did it finally dawn on me that the secret to their taste was that they are charcoal-grilled. These burgers are cooked really clean. That little piece of thin wrapping paper does not have alot of grease on it when you are unwrapping it. The double giant cheeseburger is that right size because the patties are not very thick. Served at the perfect temperature, the burger and its contents are not sloppily put together, so you have very little cheese sticking to the wrapping paper.
Wash it down with a nice cold Dr Pepper, switch out the fries for onion rings. Every now and then they're playing some old 1950's song that sounds like something out of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, and you'd swear that you are having the perfect moment of classic Americana.

Blueskies1995@reddit
Griff's is good, i live just a mile away. Unfortunately I'm all over the metroplex and it's rare that we are near Griff's at Lunch.
Right now, my burger place is Braum's. Above average burgers (although a little salty) at a very reasonable price and their quality stays the same no matter where you find one.
Never do McDonalds ever again, Burger King and Wendy's all are just too damned expensive. Any Franchise Chain pretty much is off limits now.
Off of Burgers, my favorite places are Tokyo Teriyaki in Carrollton and Taco Delite in Plano.
Iamnotarootkit@reddit
Porky's on Gus Thomasson near Oates blows both Griff's and Del's away on flavor, quantity and cost. I can usually make 2 meals from one burger and a basket of seasoned fries or tots. I ate at a Griff's about a week ago ( spent years going there) and the burger patty tasted like boiled ground beef with no seasoning whatsoever.

I went to Griffs too. I'd describe it as Dairy Queen without the ice cream treats. I'd eat if I was really close by, but not otherwise. Reasons: ketchup packets - get a dispenser. No soda machine, so I gotta beg for refills. Prices are ok but nothing special, but the food is basically fast food. This restaurant isn't interesting. It's a dull building, regular seats, nothing special.
In the best burgers for the price competition, this place wouldn't rate.

I agree. Griff’s (on Jupiter) is VERY good and has been for years.
FuzzyNet4408@reddit
Go to the grove one lol
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I second this.
I work by the garland location and it’s ok, not as great as OP’s experience.
But the grove location is closer to my house, and that’s the one that gives me the vibes OP got from garland, lol
Teamlivewire99@reddit
We live in by the Jupiter location, I like it but my daughter will go to the grove location over the garland location 🤷🏻♂️
asvpdirk@reddit
I too want to know this, I’ve never had Griffs before
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
Tasty, fulfilling, complete.
OpportunitySea2048@reddit
Been wanting to try the Jupiter one since I work in that area but always end up getting distracted by other places - your post might finally push me over the edge
txaaron@reddit
Griffs and burger island are my two favorites.
TexasToastx@reddit
Burger Island on Arapaho is the best in DFW. The fries are also amazing. Every burger joint I’ve ever tried has generic fries and the burgers don’t even taste that much different from each other.
thedeadlysun@reddit
Griffs is great, but it’s got nothing on kellers. Like, it’s not even close.
PumpkinCarvingisFun@reddit
I will try this burger but I am very skeptical that this could possibly be anywhere close to as good as Doda.
Infamous_Grass6333@reddit
For fast food Whataburger made fresh still slams every time. So damn good. Their pico de gallo burger is stupid good.
I like LA Burger too, they make a nice old fashioned burg.
CallMeErnie@reddit
Skyrocket is far superior. And yes I’ve had Griffs.
WallaceStreet@reddit
i'm going to try it- never heard of it! but if you don't try Goffs...............
JiveTurducken72@reddit
Griffs is pretty good for fast food burgers. Their fries suck, though. The Garland one is not far from my work.
I get either the chili cheeseburger or the BBQ bacon cheddar burger.
SpecialMud6084@reddit
I've been to griffs once and just thought it was fine, am I crazy?? Is the Irving location different from others?
fanofmaria@reddit
Shady’s and Haystack have entered the d…..t.
sband3@reddit
Love their burgers. And hot links.
ComfortableGlass3238@reddit
griffs is excellent
but no debate? not close? sorry I have a hard time with that when places like wingfields, kellers, ye old butcher shop, one and only, dels, and edmonds exist.
musicd65@reddit
Maybe a surprise burger rec but Hugo’s in bishop arts is absurdly good.
whuebel@reddit
Edmonds Burgers in Plano is burger heaven. Independence and 15th.
rabidwolf86@reddit
Hunky's old fashion has entered the chat...
Dangerous-Mind9463@reddit
I used to ditch class in middle school and walk to Griffs for a burger, was solid way back then too.
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
As a full-on human being (read : neither corpo, nor robot, nor AI), I can't let you beat yourself up over a definitive untru-ism. I mean, have you not been apprised??? Not once did you refer to the fine and exemplary burger that is Griff's as a >!PRODUCT!<
tldr : carry on, fellow redditor, in doing good works such as your above shout!
TheBravesDH@reddit
Hit up that spot all the time. It’s about as good as you can get at that price point. Got that old school vibe.
SuckL3ss@reddit
I go to the Griffs in Irving. I like it cuz they’re old school. The major chains are stupid pricy and not worth it.
ExcitementKey1974@reddit
Yes the Irving location is my fav
BrightAardvark@reddit
The remodel there several years ago made it more pleasant to go to even though the lot logistics/parking was difficult. I loved eating there regularly when I worked in Irving.
rimjob_steve@reddit
Griffs is just whtaburger pre PE. so many better burgers. But for a fast food joint it’s basically the best.
Heretogetthingsdone@reddit
Griff's also has Chili as an add. #2 with a scoop of chili is the bomb!
Wooden-Pilot27@reddit
Bonis points for Griff’s: they pay their employees well and they donate profits to good causes when they can.
pumkinspicelatte@reddit
If griffs is a run then yall need to teleport your assessment to JGs
GuairdeanBeatha@reddit
My first encounter with Griff’s was about 65 years ago at the location on Buckner Blvd. It was either takeout or eat in the car, no inside dining. My Mom and I would go shopping, and if I was lucky we’d stop at Griff’s. Lots of good memories there.
relaps101@reddit
Bruh, I used to hit the gym, sto at griffs, get home, smoke some bud and chow down on some griffs. Good shit.
anyoutlookuser@reddit
We go to Griffs occasionally. Great quick burger. And they get your order right and no hold ups. Every time we’ve gone seems like a school event has just let outta and they’re packed. Never a problem tho. Whataburger would crumble under that kind of pressure. Used to go to the one on s Buckner years ago when we were riding dirt bikes at Crawford park. They had these little (sliders style) burgers for a buck each. Man it was a munch.
SpencerVerde@reddit
Whoa, Crawford Park … haven’t thought about that place in decades!
OddSand7870@reddit
I did t know Griff’s was still around. I remember eating the bag of burgers when I was a kid in the 1980s.
hallerrr@reddit
Griffs is great! Used to go there all the time in high school
Fuzzy-Round1240@reddit
The one in Haltom city was meh tbh
nickbahhh@reddit
Not sure if it's still the case, but fairly recently that Griff's allowed smoking inside.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
Next to Home Depot? Fuck yeah going to get one next time I deliver up there.
CPLCraft@reddit
I’ll put it on the list. Photos look good though
aquariuslovingya@reddit
I discovered Griff's thanks to tik Tok looked one up and was 10 minutes away and it's one of my favorite places to go now, their fried apple pie is the best
SubstantialPoet8468@reddit
Dallas is a burger town
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
My brother eats at that same Grifs probably every other day.
duck-butters@reddit
I know it's in a hotel, but the burgers at Kennedy's downtown are real good
crestedgeckovivi@reddit
Lol that's my favorite fast food burger place the one off Jupiter. Yum yum yum.
anon_97800@reddit
The steak fingers and gravy too 👌
