You got $6,000, drive 120 miles a week and the car sits a lot, what car are you buying?

17 miles a day? An e-bike and a couple really good U locks.
Usual_Safety@reddit (OP)
60 miles to and from work. Country highways and 70+ mph freeway of death
Critical-Magician421@reddit
Why are you claiming the car sits a lot??
Usual_Safety@reddit (OP)
I travel for work. Could be 3 days could be 3 weeks
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
Probably just driving 2 days/week so it's sitting 5/7 days. But that's not enough to warrant a tender. OP just doesn't know.
The_BruceB@reddit
120 miles a week or 120 miles a day?
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
2 workdays/week.
Any-Investment5692@reddit
An old Toyota or Honda with a battery tender. Best to have someone drive it once a week. You don't want your breaks seizing up on you.
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
Don't need a tender if the car is driven 120 miles/week.
120 miles a month on the other hand...
Any-Investment5692@reddit
True.. I read 120miles a month.

Used EV.
nadanutcase@reddit
I haven't looked but doubt you'd find a used EV worth having for $6K
SnooWalruses6828@reddit
Lots of Leafs out there for way less.
NetLumpy1818@reddit
That’s cause they missed the playoffs (again)
AgonizingGasPains@reddit
I mention this as they are actually starting to show up used in this price range. I was surprised, but I guess it was inevitable. For someone who doesn't do a lot of driving, an EV could make sense.
nadanutcase@reddit
Agreed, they would. I heard that more EV's are showing up as used cars, but wasn't aware that there are any at that price. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

the worst example possible but you can get a BMW i3 for $6k

Weather is important. Dry roads, rain, snow?
u700MHz@reddit
Any Toyota I can find in that bracket
LegitimateFinger8966@reddit
Any other requirements? Snowy area, mpg goal, kids/pets/stuff?
You can typically find a really nice Honda Pilot for that price. Have a timing belt service done, VCM delete and you are set for another 100k miles.
Could also consider some of the Lexus GS, LS Series cars if your commute is highway heavy. Just stupid reliable and very comfortable.

If it is short trips and I can charge it at home (even 110v would be OK) an older cheap short range EV like a Leaf, Fiat 500e, or iMiev. No gas, almost no maintenance.
Otherwise, a 1998- to mid 2000's FWD GM sedan maybe, with a pushrod engine like the 3100 / 3400 / 3800. These were pretty solid. A bit heavy on gas, but 120 miles isn't much so fuel economy is less important.

An old Honda Fit or an early 2000s Toyota RAV4 as its a bit more practical.
whozwat@reddit
If you only drive 120 miles a week and the car sits most of the time, Uber/Lyft can be cheaper than owning a $6k beater once you add insurance, registration, repairs, battery, tires, and random breakdowns. Cheap cars are only cheap until they need brakes.
EdwardPotatoHand@reddit
If it’s two 12 mile trips per day that’s 50 per day where I live or 1000 per month 5 days per week. You uber recently? It’s not cheap.
PintSizedKitsune@reddit
Uber and Lyft wanted about $60 round trip to go a total of three miles on Friday. I ended up paying $6.97 for a month of free grocery delivery instead through Walmart.
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
Any 2000-2012 Toyota or Honda.

2000-2005 (a mk4) VW Golf that has a 5 speed transmission. They're in the sweet spot of being OBD2 but not having 500 computers. It's easy to keep one reliable for ages.
I just moved out of an area where there are more mk4s than any newer generation on the road.

If you're driving 120 miles a week the car is not "sitting a lot".
5k miles a year isnt a lot, but its not a stagnating car that sits for weeks at a time.
Captkarate42@reddit
The car sits a lot and you drive 120 miles a week? That averages out to like 17 miles a day. 6200 miles a year is below average for sure but not to the point that you need to worry about how much it's sitting.
I second the other opinion on an older honda/Toyota. Late 00s or early 10s Honda Fit is what I'd be looking for at that price.
