Our daughter started buying them. Then she let me try on a pair of hers. Now I have 7 pairs.

My obsession from my younger days was horses. I got to take that obsession into adulthood with me until I hit my late 40s

As a kid, my family was middle class, meaning reasonable sneakers. Went a little nuts for a period with adidas purchases. Now at 55 I realize I never need to buy sneakers for the rest of my life and am just wearing through what I have.

Same for the name brand stuff (except my vans in which I mowed lawns to get), I wore Tough Skins with the patches on the knees instead of Levi's. Not sure if it was worse wearing the jeans and Kmart shoes, or the jeans & Vans. I got bullied both ways.

That's REALLY cool. I get the connection thing for sure. Lost my mom in 2020, and there hasn't been a day gone by that as soon as I get out of bed, I look out the window and up to the sky and say "mornin ma". It's amazing how we still feel connected.

How sweet! I am sorry for your loss. My father passed away in 2009, we lost my mom in 2004.

I know for a fact my father would have been thrilled to have spoken to me about the pens I have and the different samples etc. I miss him so much every day.

I was never a Vans person, I like my plaid Chucks... but I found a really nice pair of navy and black checkered ones with yellow trim at Goodwill that were in gently used condition and I snapped them up. I've always wanted a pair of checkered Vans, I wanted a black and white checkered pair, but when those show up they're always too small. This particular pair was a perfect fit, so they came home with me XD

As a transplant to SD from the east coast, I can’t emphasize enough how important these shoes are to the locals here…my east coast ass can’t even look at these without wincing from the foot cramps I’d get if I wore these for a few minutes. They are “sick af” as the kids here say…😆

I'm 56 and still adore Vans. I like the ones with the cushioned collar, and I add cushioned insoles. I have an old hip injury, and wide feet and can't afford to fall, and skate shoes are seriously grippy and stable.

I remember my first pair of customs were black & white checker on the toe and heel with black in the quarters. The other shoe was the opposite where it was black on the toe and heel and checkered in the quarters. They don't let you do that anymore.

P.S. they have denim as a stock item now.

When I grew up, they were tennis shoes. Also they actually have a "Skate" version of different models. I learned that quickly with the Old Skools, lol.
