What do male university students wear every day?

I’m a college student in the US, and I’m going to be spending the summer abroad in London. I typically wear a tshirt and atheleisure shorts everyday, but I’ve been told that people tend to dress better in the UK. So I was wondering if I would be out of place and if anyone has recommendations for what would be normal and fit in

there was a guy on my course who came into class with full on period accurate medieval armour on some days, victorian gentlemen attire on other days, and a graphic tee with blue jeans on other days. quite a character he was
TravellingDoc87@reddit
Bet he was single lol
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit
he had like three girls vying for his attention but he was gay so it never went anywhere
Tough-Oven4317@reddit
Did he also get attention from the gents? It would be a cruel plot twist if he only had the ladies interested
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit
I'd assume so, I know firsthand gay men are often spoilt for choice. All I know is he was never sat in class without a girl hovering around him
TravellingDoc87@reddit
Yeah but how many gays have a fetish for Jacob Rees-Mogg? Lol

The same thing they wore yesterday.

Ask in r/uniuk.
But also, don't overthink it. London is very relaxed when it comes to personal style - you can wear whatever you like.
If you do want to buy some clothes while you're here, London has plenty of shopping.

In London - aside from office workers, uniformed roles, etc - people wear whatever they like. It's absolutely the fullest spectrum you could imagine. Students are especially experimental.
So there is no right or wrong, just be your authentic self and dress how it pleases you and reflects your personality. T-shirt and joggers absolutely won't seem out of place. So rather than try to predict from a distance how you might wish to dress to fit in, come over with what you've got and just buy new stuff as and when you know what you actually want.

Young males often wear a Frock Coat and Spats with a striped one-piece bathing costume underneath.

Just remember elizabethan ruffles make it hard to look at your phone
zero_sevenn@reddit
Students in the US and UK dress the same. Wear what you feel comfortable in
Banes_Addiction@reddit
That's not true. There's far fewer polo shirts here.
zbornakingthestone@reddit
Just don't wear a logo shirt.
Orange_Codex@reddit
Oh God no.
London is in a league of its own for fashionable people, but the norm in the UK is sweatpants / jeans and a T-shirt.

People in this country do dress better than Americans on average though but that's mostly the middle and upper classes

And the working class role playing Peaky Blinders
DingoBingoWimbo@reddit
I always thought sweatpants was an American word
Orange_Codex@reddit
It is, we call them joggers. I was translating for our American friend.

Sorry I've got 1am brain

Well said

Athletic wear will make you stand out as American. Gym bro is a very specific aesthetic/sub culture and it won’t go down well in a uni setting. Jeans and a t shirt is perfect. Even when it’s very hot in London, most men don’t wear shorts
Zealousideal-Low3388@reddit
Consider that it rains a lot in the UK, even in summer.
Ie, bring a jacket
Particular_Pickle465@reddit
T shirt and shorts will be fine. Many people wear that in the uk too.
TelephoneOrnery1394@reddit
For about a week of the University year
Particular_Pickle465@reddit
I see many young men walking around in groups all wearing shorts.
TravellingDoc87@reddit
You've been eyeing up men going to the gym, love.
Particular_Pickle465@reddit
Oh 😟 ok
TelephoneOrnery1394@reddit
University year is usually October-May, shorts certainly are not the norm
Difficult_Bad1064@reddit
We do dress a little smarter, but there are still very comfortable casual options. Do you have any tweed?
Queen_of_London@reddit
Unless you're studying fashion, wear whatever you want to. Actually, if you're studying fashion that's even more reason to do that.
You'll end up buying clothes here anyway, and for the first few weeks everyone will know you're American due to your accent, and nobody will actually care, so just be yourself.
BrowsingOnMaBreak@reddit
While London is a fashion capital of the world and there are incredibly stylish people breezing around, you will absolutely not be out of place in a t shirt and shorts.
CrumpledStar@reddit
Very normal. You probably want some non-athletic wear and if out late or for cooler days maybe some trousers or a jacket / jumper depending on the climate you are accustomed to.
Some clubs and restaurants (usually higher end ones but not always) might have a dress code. For this you might want smart casual.
___MorningLovely@reddit
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, college students in the US and Uk do dress quite similar.
Truewit_@reddit
Just do a bulk shop from jaded london and you'll fit right in
