What is keeping you awake right now?

So I was just finishing doom scrolling for the night when I felt something crawling on my head/face. I brushed it off and turned on my torch to see what it was. To my horror a large wasp was now crawling up my pillow, which was nice. Now I'm too freaked out to sleep and my partner is a bit grumpy that I woke her up shrieking 🤣🤦

After 18 years here, I’ve finally achieved peak British integration: uncontrollable hay fever. My eyes itch, my nose itches, I’m sneezing every five minutes like clockwork. My British husband is in the same state. At this rate, it’s shaping up to be a long, sniffly night.
Historical-Cow7943@reddit
Get a HEPA vacuum cleaner. Consider a HEPA filter in the bedroom (or make a Corsi Rosenthal filter). Pollen gets on your clothes and can settle round the house. A standard vacuum cleaner just kicks it up again. Consider wearing a mask when near pollen sources - a proper FFP2/3, not one of those stupid surgical masks. The most common hayfever is grass pollen. It is early for that (usually June / July). But lots of trees are flowering at the moment - oak, beech etc. Try and identify the pollen source. Might it be dust too? Learning these things transformed my life. I used to feel like I had a cold all year round. Now I'm fine. Oh, try antihistamine too. Buy cheap generics (loratadine?) rather than the expensive stuff.
TheToolman04@reddit
Fexofenadine would likely be better, its the next grade up from Loratadine or Citirizine.
Psychological-Bag272@reddit
Thank you! Honestly, this is so strange. This is the first time I ever have these symptoms, didn't know that allergies can just happen.
We got HEPA air purifier. I have dogs and I love gardening spent a lot of time on my flowerbed yesterday. I think this explains why I am sufferring so much now. My eyes became swollen so much over night and one of them is completely shut, and I can just open another eye to type this. Used Optex hayfever eye drop and it has stopped the itch. It is truly horrible. I hope I dont get this regularly.
Odd_Bug_7029@reddit
Ugh, it's awful isn't it. I'm on prescription strength antihistamines and a nasal spray, and my nose is STILL running.
Screw pollen

DeepStatic@reddit
Ambesol - available OTC - is a godsend. It contains Lidocaine and for us at least has been much more effective than other off the shelf teething products.
TheToolman04@reddit
To add to this comment, Ashton and Parsons teething powders. They are amazing. Just open the sachet and dump the contents in little persons mouth. I'm no Dr. so do read the labels etc.

Too hot already? I still have my 15 tog on. It's a little cathartic to know that lots of people suffer in the summer though, as I spend the whole winter in depression.
lavender_cookie_@reddit

I've made the decision to buy a portable AC unit this year. The heat in my flat becomes insufferable. I'm dreading it already, so I'm just going to spend the money and save myself another summer of awful sleep.
lavender_cookie_@reddit
This. I don't regret it at all. All the nights I lay awake, sweaty and uncomfortable I then thought to myself "how much would you pay to fall asleep right now?" And the answer was always more than an air conditioning unit 🤣🙈
Meta-Fox@reddit
We bought one a couple years ago and it continues to be the best investment in comfort ever. It's wonderful being able to cool a room within minutes.
FenderForever62@reddit
Which one did you buy? Considering getting one this year
Meta-Fox@reddit
We got ours from Meaco. We opted for the 7,000BTU unit after some napkin math, but they have more powerful options for larger spaces (going up to 12,000BTU I believe).
I would recommend Meaco. Our initial unit arrived and was making an unusual sound so I contacted them about it and within a week we had a replacement unit. Not had any problems since!
bahumat42@reddit
Great idea, was very happy with my purchase last year.
But to give yourself options but it before it gets hot. Scrambling to get one was a massive pain.

My boyfriend once woke up to a buzzing sound, he opened his eyes and the second they opened, he felt a horrible pain in one eyelid. The buzzing intensified.
He felt vibrating,, and a blurry blob thrashing infront of his eye.
Turns out a wasp was crawling on his face, and when he opened his eyes, it got part of its body caught in the open lid, and preceeded to sting him while trying to break free.
Luckily it didnt manage to sting his eyeball lol
kylehyde84@reddit (OP)
That is absolutely horrific haha
CrazyPlatypusLady@reddit
Thinking about how crazy my last week has been and trying to work out how to start unraveling the weird tangles I find myself in. I've been sitting up, chatting to my eldest offspring too.
Husband's hay fever snoring is so bad at the moment, even through antihistamines, so he's relegated to the spare bed.
My bedroom has also hit the time of year when it's basically trapping sunlight because it's south facing and has angled windows. So I've been waiting for it to cool enough to sleep. I've been out much of the day, so the windows have been shut.
I need to go to sleep soon though. I'm going out with a friend in the morning and want to enjoy it.
Bobinska@reddit
Dear lord buy a black out blind to stop that sunlight turning the place you need to sleep into a sauna! Or curtains. Keep them closed on the suniest days.
My back that my bedroom windows face is a sun trap too and I'm heat intolerant (due to medical condition, not fussiness) and thats helped enormously.
CrazyPlatypusLady@reddit
I have curtains, with extra thermal black out liners! Windows are double glazed UPVC and the roof, although flat, has excellent insulation and an extra retrofit insulation hat on top.
Can't fit blinds due to how the windows are sat. They're not like a normal Velux in a pitched roof set-up. Windows stretch the full 6m of the back of the house too. It's basically a greenhouse, this room.
Middle 3 open, end two don't. Top-hinged, outward opening. When we're in, they're open and the curtains stay closed. This really does help through the worst of summer. We were out all afternoon yesterday so the windows stayed shut, curtains were closed against the sun. Still hot as balls.
Window handle type and position, and sill placement make it impossible to fit blinds unless I want to spend the quoted £570 for made to measure. Ones that sit on the glass itself will have their floor knackered by the sun in no time. This is what happened in the livingroom, we have some in-panel ones down there for dealing with the awkward way the sun shines right in your face at different times of day. Plus there's no point in forking out that much cash for the M2M kind when the window will need replacing within the next 5 years (should be the next 3 really, but I've also got some original 1970s skylights and a mid 90s aluminium unit at the front to replace first). So currently living with an interesting two pole curtain set-up.
One day they'll be replaced. But I have a severe lack of cash issue for the time being. There's also very narrow set of ways we can modify them too, due to needing to stay in keeping with the look of the area.
Anyway, I hope this terrible graphic explains somewhat. I'll add a photo of my view from bed in a reply too.
Bobinska@reddit
Ah. Flip sake. That has to be so uncomfortable in summer. And yes, I can see why my suggestion would be awkward.
CrazyPlatypusLady@reddit
Thanks. For all the flaws, those windows were part of why I fell in love with the house!
Lying in bed looking at the stars on clear nights, or listening to the sound during rain is wonderful. Hail is terrifying. Summer is devilishly hot. Inspite of the stacks of insulation, I also occasionally get woken by particularly heavy seagulls landing and doing "upstairs neighbour" type tap dancing at 6am.
In winter even though the thermal insulation of the windows isn't terrible, I'll open the curtain and get a ball of cold air land on me. Very strange feeling.
If I ever get rich, they're will be signs. And the first sign will be me having the back window changed for one with either automatic external blinds, or the ones between the glass layers. Even if I eventually move to a bigger place (much needed), I would still do that before moving to save the next owner the joy of summer.

Neither-Albatross866@reddit
It's why I sleep with the window shut. I don't blame him. Nothing worse than hearing buzzing before you've opened your eyes.
Here's my fun story:
Had a wasp in my standing lamp's lampshade, which is in my frontroom (and it's shaped like a wasp nest, annoyingly) I guess it was attracted to the shape, warmth, light etc Had one in there underneath the bulb, buzzing like it wanted to kill me.
Me, shaking like it was minus temperatures ( even though it was the middle of summer) carried the lamp to the back door in the same fashion of someone playing Operation (1 step = 5minutes)
Tilted the lamp gently and violently shook it, saw the wasp drop out and ran back inside, locking the door out of fear the wasp had a lockpick.
Fear, personified.

My dad ambled in about 5 minutes later demanding to know what the noise was because I'd woke him up, and then huffing and puffing about having to deal with "a wee spider". I was still frozen stiff, staring at it while it stared right fucking back at me. Narcolepsy.
“Wait, doesn’t narcolepsy mean you sleep all the time?”
No, it means that the brain cannot regulate its sleep/wake cycles. So as well as randomly falling asleep during the day, it also means waking up randomly at night and not being able to sleep through the night. And this extreme fragmentation of sleep causes sleep deprivation, as it’s impossible to get enough high quality sleep (especially deep sleep) when you sleep is that fragmented.
Can be managed with meditation, during the day I take something to keep me awake, at night I take something to make me fall asleep. Problem is the night time drugs wear off after a couple of hours and don’t last long enough to get me to sleep through the night, so I have to take them twice a night.
That does mean that my night time sleep is done in two bursts rather than sleeping through the entire night, but it’s better than being unmediated and barely getting any proper night time sleep (unmedicated my night time sleep would be so fragmented that I wouldn’t get any deep sleep).
I’m due another dose of my night time drugs in a couple of minutes, which should in theory knock me out until around 5-6am (although I’m finding that it’s still not lasting long enough so I’m working with my doctor to adjust the dose).
Bobinska@reddit

Reading The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe. I've been reading it on and off all day long. I'm having a little reddit break atm because my brain needs a rest lol.
It's fascinating and weird and confusing but I love the narrative voice of the main character and the world building. The plot is bizarre...
It's about a young man who was raised since early childhood to be a Torturer. He's sent from his Guild to go live in another city to be an executioner and its about his weird adventures along the way.
I'm pretty sure a couple of chapters ago he slipped into a parallel universe where these Missionaries thought he was a demon... this is while he's on his current side quest to collect the special flower he needs, to fight in a duel to the death that he's been challenged to, for some unknown reason.

I just woke up with a feeling that I hadn’t closed a downstairs window properly. I had to get up to check it, just in case. Yeah, it was fine. Thanks for messing with me, brain.

I have been painting little plastic men and absolutely loving it, a hobby I have done on and off for the last 30 plus years, I burned myself out badly during covid and never picked it back up, because back then I was good at it and people were paying me to paint thier stuff and somewhere along the line I forgot it was fun.

I was let go from my job last week in the middle of my six month probation. Because I just wasn’t getting it.
So, I don’t need to get up in the morning, so why should I go to bed?

My dog hasn't done a wee in a fee hours. I've taken her in the back 3 times in the last 30 minutes. I've taken her for a walk outside. The moment I lie down she'll either want to go out or do a sneaky wee on the floor, which I'll have to clean up. I'm not working tomorrow, but I'm still up past my bedtime.
