Have you ever been a partner to someone who claimed to be "psychic" or similar?

“I Shagged the Psychic” to the tune of “I Shot the Sheriff”

I bet that didn't see that coming

'but she did not see me shoot my shot'

I upvoted this because I laughed but it deserves a downvote because it will be in my head all night and many more nights in the future

No, but my then-partner got very spooked by my accurately guessing what he was doing, where, when, and with whom. The whom part of that told him I must be psychic and I think he genuinely worried about that being true, lol. Nope, just way more observant and cynical than he thought.

My mum worked with a woman who claimed her husband was a psychic. He held sessions in the local pub where people paid him for readings. Years later she admitted he made it all up (after they got divorced).
Cole-Palmer-phd@reddit
Who could have seen that coming?
Proof-Lavishness7100@reddit
"Psychic phoned, what time are they on?"
"If they're any good they'll already know!"
GrumpChorlton@reddit
Went to see a psychic with a girl I was seeing. Nice lady. Most of what she said to me was absolute bollocks, except 2 things. She said she saw me wearing desert boots surrounded by sand, and she saw a pretty girl whose name began with a C or a K. 18 months later I met a girl called Catherine but everyone called her Kate. And a few months after that I moved to the Middle East. Kate and I have been together 38 years and we lived iabroad for many years, and I wore desert boots with my work uniform, on an airfield surrounded by sand. Also, I still don’t believe in that stuff 😁
Proof-Lavishness7100@reddit
Yeah, that's just confirmation bias
Proof-Lavishness7100@reddit
Not claimed, but my GF knows everything that I'm thinking, and always has to do it before me. Like go to the toilet, she has to use it first....

My great gran - well known in the village in wales she lived in. Reader of tea leaves etc.
Ruu2D2@reddit
My husband friends
Got dump. As he paid for his girlfriend to have reading
The psychic said "" he not bad for you but you will be happier with someone else "
Does that count
PracticeNo8733@reddit
No, but I did know a guy who's wife lost her job shortly after they married and got into crystals (as in healing, not mineralogy). And then got involved in an MLM selling crystal stuff. Last I knew his house was full of unsold crystal stuff.

So why you asking?

Just curious if you love someone - and I did love her at the time - how you can rationalise that within a relationship.
catsaregreat78@reddit
I guess everyone has their own line in the sand in terms of beliefs and morals.
No one person is entirely black and white, regardless of collective Reddit opinion but it’s entirely someone’s choice whether a partner’s beliefs or behaviour crosses that line.
I know I couldn’t rationalise being with someone who claimed to be psychic but I’d also struggle with even a moderate churchgoer of any flavour. That’s my line (in terms of spirituality - I have others!) and I’m not sure I could respect a partner with those beliefs.
I wouldn’t hold a friend to that line though, which I’ve only just realised and find a bit interesting.

My grandad worked on the railway and used to give his workmates "spooky" insights.
In fact his nickname was " Spooky Bill " at work.
He claimed he'd never get past 56 - and actually died at 56 of cancer. Probably a lucky guess. I'm still not convinced.
Antique_Location_514@reddit
there is definitely a railway sense of fatalities and things kicking off… so far i am on fatality number 9 for my prediction and i only work 2 days a week
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
You work 2 days a week working on the railway and have come across 9 dead people?
Antique_Location_514@reddit
no no i’ve predicted 9 dead people it’s like a sixth sense i’ve also predicted other people passing 🙈
TheAngryBad@reddit
OP is a serial killer.

'Spooky Bill' is a helluva nickname, though

Teacher here, not a partner but I taught a girl who's dad was a well-respected medium and she also allegedly had, "The Gift."
A few times she'd say there was a soldier at the window, or other unusual things. Once she told me she saw a figure in chains which struck me as a bit Jacob Marley, so I took it all with a pinch of salt.
DigitalStefan@reddit
I had a partner who went to a psychic without telling me. The Psychic predicted a long relationship and two children.
The psychic wasn’t very good, because I broke up with that partner within a week and we never spoke again.
magnificentwalnut@reddit
Never dated but my mum and her two sisters are very into tarot readings and such. When i was 15 one of my aunts told us the story of how she did a reading for someone who was awaiting a cancer diagnosis and told them it all looked positive. They were dead 9 months later. She said she felt bad about it all.
I called her some nasty names for taking advantage of a dying guy, my mum sent me to my room, my dad took my side and it started a big fuck off argument. Secretly I think my dad was itching to have a go at that aunt coz he hated her and saw my anger and joined in. Either way I didnt apologise and it all calmed down a few days later. Still don't speak to that aunt probably never will
Thats_my_nirnroot@reddit
No, but I had an ex who swore by zodiacs/astrology.
It was exhausting to the point of toxic...
cup-of-tea-76@reddit
I was ‘seeing’ someone for a while, she was absolutely convinced of the spirit world and had said spirits speak to her
I kinda ignored this cus she was a good shag but drew a line when she claimed to have heard from my dad who passed away just a few years before I met her
I was kinda sickened by this, in fact offended and made that clear before ending our ‘seeing each other’
Notagelding@reddit
Do you miss the sex?
cup-of-tea-76@reddit
Not gonna lie, yes
I already have a dim view of people that invest so much time in what I consider bullshit but she made it personal and I viewed that as an attempt at manipulation
Was left with no choice

It is a form of mentalism(Like the Derren Brown type stuff) but where a mentalist like Derren Brown will do it as a form of entertainment or experimentation. The "psychics" use it in a way that they can blag the customers or audience that they can see the future or contact the dead. I have read a couple of books on mentalism as i find it interesting and I can see the cross over in the techniques used by mentalist and by "psychics".
DonkeyOT65@reddit (OP)
I agree, but within a ( at the time ) normal relationship, I'm curious if others, like me, just overlooked it as "their thing"
I'm curious for those that did overlook it, how their relationship longevity panned out.
Mine was fairly short.
Drussthelegend2484@reddit
I was brought up to question everything and then make my own mind up. My partner doesn't claim to be a psychic but she does believe in it and spiritual things and superstitions. We have been together 9 years and it has never caused problems as I accept that is her thing and it gives her comfort or purpose and she isn't harming herself,me or anybody else with it then I am happy that she is happy. She was brought up in a way that star signs where read and all that type of stuff. Our understanding between us, is that I dont believe in that type of thing but I won't try to convince her she is wrong and vice versa. I think as long as you both as a couple respect each other's beliefs and and it isn't causing any harm or confrontation between each other then I see no problem.
DonkeyOT65@reddit (OP)
That pretty much where I was at with my ex. She believed it, I didn't, but I wasn't going to be-little her for her beliefs.
It was a very small part of our relationship, a bit like your partner has a hobby that you don't get, but you just leave them to it.
HarryPopperSC@reddit
I'm pretty cynical.. But i would imagine the VAST majority of "psychics" don't actually believe it, they just act the part and take peoples money.
People who truly believe they are, are just the rare delusional types.
So how do their partners justify it? Well they benefit from the scam, it's income for the family. So I guess that answers that.
DonkeyOT65@reddit (OP)
The thing was, my ex didn't take money for her "readings". There's a movement in the UK called The Spiritualist Church, or similar, where like minded people gather to get "messages from the other side"
Weird, yes, but it's very much a thing for some over here.

i got really into tarot cards when i was younger
i was having mt birthday party and it was just me my best friend and her two brothers left one is a year younger than me and one is about 4 years older
long story short we were all pretty drunk by this point but we got into the topic of taro and her older brother was a massive skeptic so said to do a reading
now i cannot remember the reading fully but the one thing that stuck out to all of us was that i wrote “you’re going to loose someone you lost something to” on a piece of paper that i like to scribble on when doing a reading we were thinking one od his work mates that he’d like lend money to or something just not pay him back and leave the job or something we didn’t really think much of it..
then a couple of months later the girl he lost his v card to (they were still really good friends) passed away
to this day it is still the most scary moment i had and after that i dint touch my cards for about a year..
i have also done readings that predicted life events a little too close for me to not believe in intuition or stuff like this.. i also work on the railway and have predicted fatalities a little too much (some people genuinely were spooked by it) to not think you can weirdly tune into the universe however it really depends on the persons perspective and energy… you will always have “fake” readers and personally id never even think of doing tarot as a business idea as that imo just ruins the whole point
MightyDevOps@reddit
I am , I still am to this day.
There is a CPTSD response that makes yoi go out of body , its a freeze response and the body releases dynorphins so you fly out of the body if the threat is big enough.
Then you can do this in your sleep and you can also just dissociate into out of body experiences that can be shared.
Turns out my interesting stuff is a natural defense mechanism but explains why I can do it on a whim.
That's pretty much it , I suspect most of those sightings and whatever can happen because your body gets used to it or just releasea dynorphins due to fear.

my ex said she started speaking in tongues and jesus spoke to her while she was praying. Yeah, should have ran like hell
DonkeyOT65@reddit (OP)
Haha, yeah - that's worrying.
Sfj1812@reddit
yup my ex wife claimed to be some sort of card reader ..given my scientific background it was doomed !
PracticeNo8733@reddit
Is that the new term for "gold digger"?
CatsChat@reddit
Yes, just tap-n-pay!
Sfj1812@reddit
I just think a lot of people are gullible and desperate for answers
DonkeyOT65@reddit (OP)
Of course it's bollocks - surely? But I was prepared to overlook "that" side of her, because it gave her comfort and solace.
Didn't get personally involved. We split up for different reasons years later, but maybe I should have considered that aspect of her as a warning sign before our short-lived marriage.

My grandma’s dad claimed he was psychic or at least the people at his work thought he had special abilities. He was a radiography lab technician, and did advanced maths for fun. Apparently the professors at the hospital used to give him objects associated with their Freemason meetings and he was able to tell them stuff about the objects that they said he couldn’t possibly have known. I wish I knew more about it and him. It’s u clear if this was his claim or theirs. My grandma was a very sensible woman who lived a very uncolourful life so it’s surprising that her dad was like this. I hear he was very nice and a bit intense! I might ask my mum for more info now I’ve seen this post!
Dear-Appeal-7007@reddit
My friends granny could read tea leaves. I only ever drank tea in her house once 🤣🤣 she had plenty to say about my at the time boyfriend 😵💫. She was 100% correct and it all came true within the year after her telling me 🤣🤣
