DA throwing book at him. Need more of this.
Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
Say he's 14. That means that these points stay on his license until he's 21. His insurance premiums will be through the roof.
zeizkal@reddit
You say that like he would of ever had insurance, dude was probably gonna get VA plates.
Latter-Ad-1523@reddit
what does va plates mean?
zeizkal@reddit
Virginia plates, its how maryland drives get around not having car insurance.
TwoThumbFist@reddit
Google telling me that loophole was closed on 2024, or is there another one
zeizkal@reddit
If it was great! I thought they were still working on fixing it but it still was a problem. But I havent looked into it recently.
Dirt_Bike_Zero@reddit
...or a licence.
jnyc777@reddit
Even plates, have you not seen the dirt bikes and atvs that gather and run the roads pulling stunts
Wifite@reddit
You think he will be driving with insurance to begin with?
Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
No. I'm just wondering what things will look like when he turns 16.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit (OP)
Hopefully the parents' insurance goes up too since he could borrow the family car at any time with or without authorization.
Latter-Ad-1523@reddit
they probably dont have insureance
Separate-Command1993@reddit
I mean they were acting like fucking morons…
Use them off road like the rest of us that aren’t morons
Hungry_Freaks_Daddy@reddit
I think about all the dumb shit we did when we were young....like, truly stupid things. I'm not sure if these had existed when I was a kid that I would be doing burnouts and wheelies and speeding on the sidewalk of a downtown area, honestly. There's levels of bad and stupid behavior and this is up there.
It's hard to put myself back into the exact mindset of my early teens. There's definitely a lot of peer pressure, wanting to do cool things or look cool and a lot of it comes from boredom as well. There's a rush of adrenaline from misbehaving. I do sort of understand the appeal. I had a loooooooooooot of speeding tickets when i was a young driver. I haven't had a ticket in literally 20 years. You learn your lesson.
Just now, just driving back from my parents house, I saw a half dozen teenagers along the way on emotos, e scooters, and e bikes. Not all together, I mean on one street I saw a kid on an emoto, down the road i saw a couple kids on bikes and scooters etc. These things are fucking EVERYWHERE.
I'm not sure how to combat it. I hate government interference/overreach, but a kid that asks their mom for a 300 dollar temu bike and the mom doesn't know shit about them, sees "max speed 20mph" and sees the pedals or the kid says shit like oh well the motor just kinda helps you pedal a bit it's not a moped its not a dirtbike and then the parents just buy it for them and the kid fucking unlocks it ya know? As much as I fucking hate it we need more regulation because I truly don't know how you educate the parents.
Only thing I can see is a teenager killing someone else on one of these and being tried as an adult. Something crazy that makes national news. Parents sued for millions. That kinda thing.
Otaraka@reddit
When I was a kid you could get your driving licence at 15 and our own car or motorbike. And getting a cheap old clunker wasn’t hard either. It was carnage.
Regulation might suck but I’ve already been through this really.
AMC2Zero@reddit
Transportation should become more affordable, not less. Not everyone wants to spend a quarter of their paycheck.
Otaraka@reddit
I don’t see a huge need for 15 year olds to be using these kinds of powered transport at the speeds they can do.
AMC2Zero@reddit
They should wait until 16, but I also think 16 is too young for a full sized car, that should be 18.
Otaraka@reddit
I’m fine with them essentially being treated like motorbikes licensing wise.
Ideally there would be some mid level options but there’s so many people doing very high speed ones that it’s difficult in practise.
AMC2Zero@reddit
My idea for a mid range option would be the moped category with the speed cap raised to 45mph and requiring a regular license to ride as well as some safety features like signals, lights, and mirrors.
Fits nicely between freeway capable motorcycles and class 3 ebikes.
Some states like Connecticut do this for >750w ebikes that aren't full motorcycles and I wish more would adopt it.
Unusual-Scarcity6536@reddit
I absolutely love this idea, though it'll likely never get implemented because of government greed. They need us driving expensive shitboxes that they can tax us heavily on. Honestly I just wish we were back in the time where everything was "just an ebike" and nobody really bothered to enforce the laws about them (if there were any). The time before the irresponsible children on Surrons ruined it all for everyone.
Otaraka@reddit
What age are you thinking for this?
I had the option for that at 15 with a speed of about 30mph for moped’s and that was lethal enough.
AMC2Zero@reddit
I was thinking 16, most of the danger of mopeds can be mitigated by following traffic rules.
Otaraka@reddit
I don’t see that having a prayer of getting up in today’s world.
Not in my country anyway, one state is currently passing a law to make it so that even an Ebike isn’t possible till 16 and needing a learners permit for that.
Unusual-Scarcity6536@reddit
Well your country sounds pretty miserable to me (no offense to you meant here, just stating my opinion). I don't understand how people are okay with laws like that. The little fun remaining is being drained from the world by the governments.
AMC2Zero@reddit
Well if they can drive 0 visibility SUVs at 16, I don't see the problem with something that has a fraction of the liability.
Otaraka@reddit
You wouldn’t be driving an SUV on your own here, you have to be 18 to even get P’s.
sparhawk817@reddit
And that's already the age you can own and operate a moped in most states with a regular driver's license.
MountainOpen8325@reddit
So you sped in a 4000lb + machine but don’t think that is on the level of being stupid on a sub 200lb bike? Good lord this sub needs to touch grass
SexiestPanda@reddit
This sub lowkey be promoting American car culture a lot of the times lol. Like if the choice is between a kid in a 3-4 thousand pound metal box vs 60 pound bike…. The bike is much better lol
pterencephalon@reddit
I hate car culture. But giving a 12 year old a 40 mph emoto with no safety requirements on it isn't the same as having to get a driver's license and insusance to drive a car. (But I also think 16 is too young for driver's licenses.)
MountainOpen8325@reddit
You’re right, very different. One is literally heavy machinery that can go 100MPh that any jackoff can get a license for in this country, and the other weighs the same as a large man. I know which one I’d rather have in my neighborhood.
I’m not against the idea that we need some sort of accountability surrounding the Emoto problem. I am against a bunch of people pursuing throwing the book at teenagers legally when they most likely are not even half as responsible in their own lives. The guy I am replying to literally admitted to doing something far more dangerous and irresponsible while in the same breath acting like these kids are somehow on another level of stupid.
If the people pursuing regulation want to be taken seriously they should get real and bring attention to the issue in a way that is respectable, logical and presents the issue for what it is instead crying mayhem in the streets cause that is absolute bs.
pterencephalon@reddit
"Whataboutism" about cars being worse isn't gonna fix anything with e-motos.
Also these are already illegal so I'm not arguing for more regulation. Yeah, educate the parents and take the bikes I guess when kids do crazy shit. I'm not saying throw a kid in juvie for it, but "they're just kids" shouldn't mean NO consequences for their actions.
MountainOpen8325@reddit
I agree with you completely as far as accountability. However, it is not whataboutism, it’s pointing out hypocrisy. And that hypocrisy is why people here are seen as Karens as opposed to logical thinkers with good ideas.
Separate-Command1993@reddit
The issue is the parents not teaching the kids consequences and responsibility. I literally bought myself an emoto so I can ride with my son and teach him safety and how to ride. I’m willing to bet none of these parents have even ridden their kids bikes before to see how they handle
Separate-Command1993@reddit
We need places for these kids to ride, ima be real, my spots are slowly going away. Where I’m at today will probably have houses being built on it next week. It’s how technology advances, they’re going nowhere. Let them ride trails, open up a small 1 acre track somewhere, make them easier to register even would be a start
No_Home_708@reddit
I did lots of stupid shit as a kid but we knew not to attract attention.
zedodee@reddit
How are they supposed to get there? Im just saying... when you're 13, are given a moto, have no way to get to the trails, and have a lot of free time, you're gonna act a mad fool.
Anothercoot@reddit
You just don't you ride your bike to the park and play b ball or throw rocks in the river and get good grades.
Down-InA-hole@reddit
They do look like they'd be a lot of fun in the right place(as in not public roads or cities lol). If I had some property to ride on I would probably have one by now. How quick does yours go? I've heard some go over 50mph? That's wild!
Latter-Ad-1523@reddit
when i built mine, i suited up with motorcycle jacket, pants and helmit and did one speed run, i hit 59mph before i said this is enough, i still have lots of throttle left. i honestly dont remember the watts it took to get there, i suspect 7kw to 10kw. i have since upgraded moter and controller, but not to go faster, but to last years at 30mph maybe slower if pulling a trailer
Down-InA-hole@reddit
Good lord! I got nervous the first time I went past 25mph on my velotric e bike, can't imagine riding like some of the kids on those e motos!
Latter-Ad-1523@reddit
ahah i fell the same now, in my defense, i could ride 16mph on a small mountain bike all day a few years ago, as long as it was flat and there was no crazy wind.
Down-InA-hole@reddit
For some reason it feels way faster on my e bike at anything over 20mph compared to my road bike. I put a speedometer on my regular road bike(even downloaded a speedometer app on my phone to compare it to cause it just didn't seem like I was going that fast!) and was cruising at like 21/22mph for a little bit but maybe I'm just "in the zone" more when I ride my pedal bike
Separate-Command1993@reddit
47mph max is all I’ve done but when on the trails and hills it’s all about torque not top speed. My drax x is a beast I love it
mil0wCS@reddit
There’s a surprising amount of kids that treat these like normal motorcycles on the road it’s quite annoying honestly
ziphyr_@reddit
And some people here are surprised of some of them laws popping up. these people gave them there reason to.
The parents 100% need to share the responsibility. they equipped their kids with those illegal ‘ebikes’.
4look4rd@reddit
All the laws were already on the books, and the reporters were spot on by not calling them e-bikes, they are electric dirt bikes.
Dirt_Bike_Zero@reddit
Share the responsibility? How are they not 100% at fault? Surely they bought it for the child. Put any kid on an emoto and they'll go as fast as the bike is capable of.
ziphyr_@reddit
because a kid in their teens are old enough to have some sense of what is right and wrong. if the parents take 100% of the blame, what are the teens going to learn from this?
darforce@reddit
It’s crazy to me that any parent would give their kid this to ride in traffic
TopRepulsive4766@reddit
Not only should they throw the book at him, but also his parents.
If any of my boys even dreamed of behaving like that, they wouldn't be touching an ebike, emoto, dirt bike, (or whatever other names they have for the same thing) for a LONG LONG time. And of course they would be grounded for an equal length of time.
Dirt_Bike_Zero@reddit
I'd argue that the parents are 100% at fault and the kid only did what any kid would do in the same situation.
TopRepulsive4766@reddit
I agree. But not 100%. Parental failure definitely leads to kids 'running wild' and doing stupid things. However, kids who have been taught better often exhibit bad behaviour. Usually as a result of influence from peers.
PapaOoMaoMao@reddit
Thank goodness they called it a dirt bike. We don't need anymore "this 4000W throttle driven E-bike.." bullshit. Just because it has an electric motor, doesn't make it an E-bike.
Taiyoryu@reddit
Just because it has pedals, doesn’t make it an e-bike.
Giggsroo@reddit
But apparently most cops treat it like this. It shouldn't be, but that's how the laws are being enforced right now
unseenmover@reddit
Hell i got arrested trying to outrun the cops on a 74 CR 125..
My parents were ppppiiiiissssseeeeddddddd..
quasio@reddit
I bet the cr gave em trouble though
Latter-Ad-1523@reddit
kids will be kids haha. we were kids once, and now its our turn to be pissed at the kids

As of this moment with 31k views, we have 44 upvotes and a 74.4% upvote ratio. Implying 15 out of 59 downvotes.
So roughly one quarter of this forum seems to be cool with kids riding e-motos recklessly and illegally on public roads. We have work to do.
darforce@reddit
Next arrest the stupid parent who by their 13 years this and let them run free terrorizing the neighborhood
nowaybrose@reddit
Just shocked and glad they didn’t use the word bicycle or even e-bike
Jbikecommuter@reddit
E-motos are destroying the reputation of e-bikes
thirtynation@reddit
Ok
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit (OP)
Most of the people commenting. Those fed up with hooligans.
thirtynation@reddit
Indeed you and these others that are so addicted to anger and reddit outrage you'd rather post about a random story in a random state than share and celebrate your bikes, you know, what this sub is actually about.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit (OP)
You have no clue what you are saying. Probably because you never bother giving people tips and purchase recommendations. If you did you would recognize that I frequently do this.
pnwloveyoutalltreea@reddit
Please take this to a relevant sub. This is about e-bikes not your hate of kids and electric motorcycles.
iceyconditions@reddit
This was a bicycle according to the majority of this sub and the mods.
thirtynation@reddit
Incorrect.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit (OP)
You can't have it both ways. E-moto people regularly remind members of this sub that it is about all two wheeled electric vehicles.
And the lawlessness of kids riding e-motos impacts every one of us riding ebikes, so allow me to decline your offer.
pnwloveyoutalltreea@reddit
No. You can’t bring your grudges against another group to this unrelated sub. Personally attacking me for acknowledging you are being unrelated drama to this sub is inappropriate. Go take a nap and comeback when you can act like an adult.
ilikehosewater@reddit
From the sidebar, the very first thing.

Ambitious-Carob-9478@reddit
Knock on wood but, I ride an emoto around my city to get to school and my friends houses, im admittedly 15 and I havent gotten stopped or even questioned, I walked past my SRO and he waved at me didnt even ask any questions
I think it honestly depends on how you ride
Lordly_Lobster@reddit
That's a good start. More please.
jnyc777@reddit
Doesn’t matter what you’re ridding. You can pull a long ass wheelie on a pedal bike, this guy is obviously the problem, it’s not the bikes it’s the riders
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit (OP)
Can you do burnouts on your pedal bike?
Obviously the main problem is the rider. E-motos ridden at designated offroad vehicle parks are cool.
jnyc777@reddit
A class one ebike can do a burnout too, it’s just not as cool if you half to lift the weight off the rear tire. Either way some kids are actually doing the same thing on gas dirt bikes, it’s not the bike it’s the rider
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit (OP)
Uh no. It cannot. Do you even know the definition of class 1?
jnyc777@reddit
No throttle, still doable
boyengabird@reddit
Can you imagine getting stopped for a wheelie on a bmx bike?

It would be funny but if you’re playing in traffic ! Could happen

Good, people need to understand there is a difference between an Ebike, and Emoto. This subreddit shouldn't have Emotos in it.
Latter-Ad-1523@reddit
the only reason i can might be able to agree with you, and i generally dont, is this this sub is full of people who pay 4k for a bike that goes super slow, barely climbs hills and the owners of said bike have to take it to a shop for flat tires and have no idea what a hall sensor is.
with the more powerful ebikes, people might talk about current vs torque curves, turn counts on coils, wh per mile, how to build or trouble shoot a diy build or store bought bike etc etc
personally i think its good to keep it all here and skip over the stuff you dont want to read about.
i do wish kids wouldnt abuse things, but we were all kids once, maybe not as poor, violent and dumb as some of these kids running around the cities now days though

Kids really seem to have no regard for anything other than what THEY want to do. No respect for anything pr anyone but themselves.
