I personally dont like going underground after working a coal mine. Above ground stick me in an engine bay just big enough to fit in im good. Put me underground im claustrophobic.
Referring to cave loads, which are frequently pretty tight spaces and extremely close quarters. Not a rookie job, but also not the hardest thing in the world. Personally, I love taking cave loads every so often
Not a trucker, but I’ve been in those caves before and they are actually pretty neat. Not many people would expect a huge underground cave network near KC.
We have a driver with us that is claustrophobic as hell, and nearly had a breakdown in one of those Missouri caves. From what he told me, between the dimmer light and lower ceilings and narrow lanes, he felt like the whole place was closing in on him. Said it wasn't bad once he got to a dock and inside the office, but stayed there until he had to leave. Doesn't go underground anymore.
Scuba instructor. Shop owner asked me to dime master for ice diving class for local fire and PD joint dive team.
Guy came up from Sacramento to go ice skating on Donner lake. Which was but he was on 3 foot stilts.
He felll and kept falling. Out of area dive team had to come recover the body.
I am basically there on a 10 foot tether off the main line to respond in case of a panicked or disoriented diver and get them back to hole in the ice.
Only had one guy panic. Not bad. Grabbed him. Looked him the eyes. Gave the turn around signal and back to the hole. He was ok after that.
I think it was a combination of being out of his comfort zone. Managing line communication. Could not afford full face mask and comm gear.
So essentially pulls on the line to communicate
I've been to the caves in KC,Springfield MO and I Illinois. All with a trainer who did the docking. I'm looking forward to going back and docking myself.
well, 60 cpm aint bad but that underground storage facility theyre clearly talking about seems like a high point. sometimes you have a tight turn or a bothersome parking area to deal with.. wouldnt you rather that be in that cool cave complex instead of the usual?
I went in there one time and they tried to put me in a dock they had a post in front of it after about 20 minutes. I went inside and asked for another door. All the other doors were open. There were like 10 doors around me that did not have a truck in them or a trailer and these fuckers wanted me to go to the dock door. They had a goddamn pylon in front of it. After arguing for 30 minutes, they finally relented. I told them either put me in another doctor or I’ll just take this fucking thing and go.
Yeah it’s fucking hell . I had to drop my trailer and go park at a empty dock so this guy can squeeze next to me, his tandems were all the to the rear I just hope he slid them before he left 💀

SubTropolis in KC
Own-Load-7041@reddit
I can understand that. There are tons of idiots who nearly stop before going through a tunnel on an interstate.
saywhat181@reddit
Man, driving a box truck through there was nuts. I couldn't imagine driving a full length rig through there.
Easyfruit123@reddit (OP)
Superrrrr wide turns and have to watch the wall when backing it’s not fun
Rag3QuitnRob3rtGame@reddit
Depends on which one, tbh. Some have a bunch of room, just follow the one way signs, others are tight af
vbceejayy@reddit
Right my first time was in a box truck before my CDL and i was amazed to say the least!
TankAndFalco@reddit
Wants you to bang his wife… Gotta be able to enter that cave.
Always_Shifting_4459@reddit
And successfully get back out of that same cave too 🤣
LanceWasHere@reddit
Is there a legitimate reason this would be a requirement? Are there people who cannot enter/exit caves?
p38fln@reddit
Some drivers are VERY claustrophobic and will not go in the caves no matter how big they arw
CygnsX-1@reddit
Some drivers are skeptical about driving their rig into a cave. I did it once and was amazed how large it was down there.
MrPotato4217@reddit
I come from a long line of cave dwellers. This would be no problem.
mxadema@reddit
The cheese cave ?
truckeredditor@reddit
No. Subtropolis, and all the others, house all different types of warehouses. Not just the famous cheese caves.

I've known a few drivers who are vets from the war in Afghanistan, and they get severe PTSD from caves.

There is a large infrastructure of underground caves around Kansas City. It basically stays around 75 degrees year round so it's great for storage.
Easyfruit123@reddit (OP)
Yeah I live in kc been there more times than I wanted to
