Mavis ripoff?

I went to get an oil change at Mavis. I asked for a conventional oil change. When I got bill and it said “synthetic blend” but they assured me it was a just conventional. However the prices show 77 dollars for the oil which was 6.45 quarts 5W-30. And that didn’t include labor. Isn’t that excessive? They said it’s because the car took an extra quart compared to other cars. But I still felt that was excessive for conventional oil.

Oil change places are stupid.
Got a promo card for a new up and coming chain in the area... $20 off.
So, I thought "sure, why not".
Price was still $130 after the rebate.
I've changed my own oil for the last 45 or so years.
I had no idea.

$100 for an oil change will barely keep a shop in business even if they're very efficient. Unless they're also upselling $80 air filters half the time.
So do it yourself next time if you think you can do better for less. I DIY all my own work and it pays for my tool habit ;-)

A 5-quart jug of full synthetic Mobil 1 5w30 can be purchased from Walmart for $25.
So, what you paid for conventional is pretty high IMO, but also not uncommon for places like that... which is why most of us here do it ourselves. I can do a full synth change with a good filter for $40 and it takes all of about 20min.

Sounds right due to increase in oil prices. Also almost 7 quarts is a lot. Most places in fine print lists for 5 quarts max some even 4.5. I found this out when a place left mine almost a quart low. My car uses 5.5 they put in 4.5 and showed me the fine print. In that case they didn’t charge me to fill it I just had to exit and drive back in as they give you 2 free top offs in between changes. Weird but it saved me a few bucks

Here is the math
Oil $5/quart. So $35
You generally pay this higher price although 5 quart bottle is around $16-$20
Oil Filter. $12
Total before labor is $47
Assume half hour tops at $50-$60/hour so $72-$77 for the oil change

77 is the the oil, they charged me 16 for labor and 8 for the filter so 100 dollars total for a conventional oil change.
Equana@reddit
That is cheaper than a new engine, isn't it?
Otherwise-Balance401@reddit (OP)
Yes it is but doesn’t mean they can rip me off by charging more than what services they provided
Equana@reddit
Check around and confirm the going rate for oil changes in your area. $100 would be pretty much normal for conventional oil changes in my area.

Some places don’t stock conventional anymore. They’ll carry synthetic and synthetic blend for older cars.
Insertsociallife@reddit
If they did use synthetic blend, that's better than the dino sludge anyway so that's an upgrade. This price seems fair to me.
Otherwise-Balance401@reddit (OP)
No they used conventional but they put synthetic blend on the bill. I think that was purposeful. The whole oil change 77 plus filter 8 and labor 16 equal 101 total. I’m sorry but even with the oil prices that’s crazy.
Insertsociallife@reddit
Oh, I misread that. $77 just in oil is insane.

You know, there has recently been some trouble in the part of the world where oil comes from.
