How difficult is the "thermal fit?" I'm worried that I'd be pulling the upper from my oven and the barrel from my freezer and smacking the shit out of it and it might never come apart afterwards

Don't waste time with the freezer or oven. Just heat the receiver with a propane torch for 10-20 seconds and the barrel will slide right in.

If you need to remove it, do the same thing to the receiver.

As long as it's not glowing cherry red, no harm will come of it.

I'm talking just the standard M4E1, that's compatible with standard handguards/barrel nuts. They might have the enhanced version. Personally, I would say no unless your handguard holding zero is important to you for night vision lasers and whatnot. Even then there's premium handguards with a more rigid attachment system, like Aero's Mod 4, G$, DD, Larue, etc.

Rail/laser POI shift is only a minor concern, and a complete nonissue for most people. But semi monolithic uppers like the M4E1 enhanced are better at reducing barrel deflection.

Yeah I'm of the same opinion for LAMs, it's just the reason everyone throws out for it. But how does the handguard affect barrel deflection on a free float handguard? I thought that was the general point of free float handguards.

Force on the rail translates to deflection of the barrel nut and barrel extension, and flexing of the aluminum upper receiver. Only a chassis system can completely eliminate barrel deflection. For AR15s, the only chassis that exists is the discontinued Springfield Saint Edge ATC, which has a monolothic lower receiver+lower handguard. And I think Spuhr is working on a steel upper that's supposed to solve POI shift. Until then, the monolithic and semimonolothic uppers on the market work well enough.

You're only somewhat pigeon holed. Spikes Tactical and a few others sell handguards that fit the BAR barrel nut pattern that the M4E1 enhanced uses. The advantage of these enhanced uppers is that the handguards screw directly to the upper making these about as close to a monolithic upper receiver as you can get without it actually being monolithic. I ordered another one (this will be my 3rd enhanced upper) because I like them so much and it's kind of disappointing that this might be the last batch of these sent out by Aero.

This is their enhanced receiver, which has the handguard interface as part of the receiver forging. Which is really fantastic for rigidity (and you also don't have to time it). But it also will never work with a non-Aero Enhanced handguard, which may be a problem with Aero going under and all...

The handguard interface is built into the upper, but it still uses a proprietary barrel nut that threads in under that to hold the barrel on place. That's the part that was missing on the one I bought, and the upper is just an expensive paperweight without it

Aero has two different enhanced barrel nuts: The COP nut and the BAR nut. The BAR nut is supposed to come with their enhanced handguards and it attaches to a threaded mil-spec upper like any other barrel nut. The enhanced upper uses the COP nut instead because it has an integrated BAR mount. The COP nut's only job is to hold the barrel on place, and it only fits the enhanced upper, so it's supposed to be included

i bought the handguard from dirty bird where the listing said the barrel nut was included, it was not. Dirty Bird said they don't have them and have to wait for Aero to ship them.... that was 3 months ago. There's no way Aero is going to ship them anytime soon if ever. Be weary.

Yea idk what’s up with aero. Had a barrel but from them get damaged and when I looked to buy a replacement they are OOS with estimated restock in October. Had to buy a whole new hand guard and went with a BCM. Will probably be my last purchase from them if replacement parts are unavailable.

Buyer beware: I bought one of these, it was supposed to be a complete upper. Thankfully it DID have the barrel nut, but that was it. I had to email CS to get the ejection port cover and FA that is supposed to be installed. It did not include the barrel nut wrench, which it is supposed to come with. Idk what’s going on, I’ve given Dirty Bird/AR15 Discounts (they’re the same company) a lot of business over the years, and this was the first time I’ve ever had issues.
