Building an extreme PC (9950X3D + RTX 5090) — need advice on the rest of the build

Hey everyone,
I’m building a high-end PC mainly for heavy workloads (3D rendering, AI, programming, and gaming), and I’ve already bought these parts:
- CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X3D
- GPU: RTX 5090
- RAM: DDR5 9200 (high-speed kit)
Now I’m trying to choose the rest of the components and want advice from people who’ve built similar systems.
I’m mainly looking for recommendations on:
- Motherboard (X870/X870E — stability is more important than RGB)
- PSU (thinking 1000W vs 1200W, ATX 3.1 for 5090)
- Cooling (is 360mm AIO enough or should I go custom loop?)
- Case (good airflow + fits large GPUs comfortably)
- Storage setup (PCIe 4.0 vs 5.0, single vs multiple drives)
Other details:
- Budget is flexible (I prefer performance/reliability over saving money) no limit at all !!!
- I want something stable under heavy load, not just good on paper
- Noise isn’t a huge concern
If you’ve built something similar or have experience with these parts, I’d really appreciate your input.
Thanks 🙏

Id stick to 6000mhz unless you really need that 9200mhz speed, also at which point is a threadripper and 6000 blackwell pro better for you?

No idea how much ram or storage you need, so I went with 64 gigs and 8 terabytes of storage in separate drives.

If you have an unlimited budget and you need to do heavy workloads then get the RTX6000 Pro workstation GPU. That is superior to the RTX5090 in games and is much better in workloads.

No offense and this is not directed at you specifically, but I feel like every post about a high end build starts out in defensive mode:
“I am making a high end PC it is for 3D rendering, AI work, Photoshop, Premiere, a DAW, quantum cryptography, bioengineering, protein folding, CAD prototyping, animal husbandry, because yes I do all of these things but only some at my day job and the rest are my myriad hobbies, oh and also it would be nice if it played some games I guess”
Like just say “I am splurging on a gaming rig because I wanna and am gonna.” Y’all aren’t fooling anyone. You don’t do both 3D rendering and like, LLM training, in any capacity to warrant asking this subreddit of all places what you should get. If you did actually do those things, you’d have an idea of what you needed, 100%.
It’s games. Oh, and porn. Own it. 💙

I'm planning on getting the Asus ROG Dark Hero... Again for me, stability and longevity is important. I'm open to other 870E boards, but there's always a trade-off on PCIE lane configurations.

- 1200w psu is the better option just to be safe, make sure its a reliable brand like corsair or msi
- a 360mm aio is fine, i wouldnt even dream of custom loops in case of leaks damaging that expensive gear
also idk about that ram, tbh just a 6400mhz kit will be fine and you could probably get a larger amount for the same money

I'm going to caution you that I think you bought the wrong RAM. I'm pretty sure that anything that fast is a CUDIMM. Ryzen CPUs don't support the super fast speeds of CUDIMMs. They will only support it in bypass mode, which completely negates the benefits.
Even if that isn't a CUDIMM kit, there's no way your CPU's memory controller will get anywhere near that speed.
I highly encourage you to return that RAM and get a more reasonable DDR5-6000 or 6400 kit.

Makes sense tbh I’ve seen some CUDIMM kits in stores (even older versions), do any of them actually work well on Ryzen or is it better to just avoid them completely?
PembyVillageIdiot@reddit
Maybe you’re misunderstanding but it’s only on the latest mobo bios that zen5 will even boot with CUDIMM let alone work well and only does that by turning off everything that makes CUDIMM what it is. There’s zero point to buyin a CUDIMM kit for ryzen
aragorn18@reddit
CUDIMM should be completely avoided on AMD CPUs. It's only really supported by Intel CPUs.

Why don't you consider two different configurations, one on a mac for work, the other on a pc for gaming?

Hyte Y70 great case for airflow but its huge
