Heads up: PMC Bronze .308 is catching on magnets despite being advertised as lead core, non-magnetic an safe for indoor ranges.

Someone did a whoopsies.
juggarjew@reddit
Can you take one apart and dissect the bullet?
Acceptable_Put9737@reddit
I have a device that separates the bullet from the casing. The casing comes out the side, easy. It’s the bullet that’s hard to recover in one piece
pointer_to_null@reddit
Find a pool, submerge the device and immediately engage the separation mechanism. Bullet will travel about 5 feet, and then sink to the bottom where you easily recover it within seconds without burning your bare fingers. Bullet and casing are both pristine, though I HIGHLY recommend drying off your device and applying oil immediately afterwards.
Don't ask me how I know. Also I may have a cheap, slightly rusty savage axis for sale.
sploader@reddit
I haven't been able to pull an intact bullet when using my separation device. I can recover the case but it gets pretty hot using this method. I must be doing it wrong.
D00Mcandy@reddit
I have this EXACT issue as well! Weird!
t_haynes_12@reddit
I just have to clarify. Are you talking about a firearm and no one seems to get the joke? Or is the joke continuing and I just don’t understand the responses?
idk012@reddit
Yes
ArmyVetRN@reddit
Just got an inertia hammer
doulikefishsticks69@reddit
Vice grips and dremel with cutting wheel.
dadbodsupreme@reddit
Just torch cut it.
Alphamedon@reddit
Torch cut this dick
dadbodsupreme@reddit
I don't know man. I don't think the torch would be good for material that thin.
sirbassist83@reddit
... what? There's like a dozen different designs of bullet puller that don't damage any of the components
bl0odredsandman@reddit
The joke went over your head, didn't it?
sirbassist83@reddit
Apparently it did
Porky5CO@reddit
The bullet comes out in one piece, what are you talking about?
ImmovableThrone@reddit
He's saying his rifle is the tool
Porky5CO@reddit
Lol, woosh
Mellero47@reddit
Literally
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
I have a bullet puller but unfortunately nothing I can use to actually cut the round open.
juggarjew@reddit
Bud all you need is some steel snips, tool hardened steel will peel open a bullet like a hot knife through butter. Lead and copper are nothing to tool hardened steel.
Check out my nasty work with just some needle nose and snips on the 1980's Czech Steel core .32 ACP ammo: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheOneTrueCaliber/comments/1ns9u02/sb_surplus_red_box_steel_core_pictures/
Please deliver OP, I know you have the tools if you have those bullets.
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
the_duck17@reddit
Bimetal, copper washed jacket then...just like the old lacquer sealed AK ammo I have for emergencies.
I'm in CA and I wouldn't be able to use that ammo.
bplipschitz@reddit
Can't at DNR ranges where I am. And I have some. . .
the_duck17@reddit
Can't on BLM land during fire season, which in California is year round now.
LeastDerangedNowiFan@reddit
So am I, you can use it...just not at indoor ranges lol
Kyle_Blackpaw@reddit
lol my range would never allow this ammo then
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
juggarjew@reddit
Yeah , looks like a bi-metallic jacket, copper washed steel. PMC really needs to be more forthcoming about this.... they need to indicate this on the box. Thanks for confirming it!
DarthMonkey212313@reddit
Pre covid (2018 I think) they got caught misleading on jacketing/washing. Looks like the same shit again.
optimistic_analyst@reddit
Did it spark at all while you cut it with the dremmel?
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
Hit the jacket with a dremel and looks like steel, maybe it’s a copper washed steel jacket??
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
I have a large bolt cutter laying around, guess I could cut it open with that pretty easy.
juggarjew@reddit
Yup, should be easy then to find out if they are making these with bi-metallic jackets, which is what I would assume is going on.
BA5ED@reddit
It’s copper and lead. Melt it
randotaway90@reddit
You dont own a dremel? They sell em.
doulikefishsticks69@reddit
Vice grips and dremel with cutting wheel.
Fluffy_History@reddit
Well then you can at least tell if the round or the casing is whats magnetic.
UserNameN0tWitty@reddit
It doesn't have to be surgical. Angle grinder and vice?
Sal-LeMandeur@reddit
A dull butter-knife will do.
xbuzzbyx@reddit
Got a hammer and concrete?
Comfortable_Snow5817@reddit
Maybe a stupid question, why would non-lead core be unsafe for indoor ranges?
TheWhiteLancer@reddit
The steel doesn't deform as much, and damages the backstops. When outside and it's all dirt that's fine, just add more dirt and pack it back down. But indoors where it's a concrete wall at the end, that's expensive to repair properly.
Probably also some sparking causing fire issues.
PandorasFlame1@reddit
Bimetallic jackets will catch magnets and are indoor range safe
NauticalClam@reddit
Can someone explain why some ammo is not indoor safe?
chicano32@reddit
Can potentially ignite gun residue in the enclosed space due to spark.
NauticalClam@reddit
Okay gotcha. Thanks
Hail_CS@reddit
this might be steel jacket on lead core. i have some ammo that also catches on magnets but isn’t steel core, it’s a thin steel jacket that’s been plated copper. still lead core and indoor safe
tykaboom@reddit
Hows that on your rifle bore?
I cant imagine steel jacket is acceptable compared to copper.
TacTurtle@reddit
Similar to regular copper jacketed - the steel is very soft and the copper plating layer acts like lubricant.
There is also aluminum plated steel jacket (Tula made some of this commercially).
yeehawpard@reddit
This is what mpst eastern european ammo is doing
tykaboom@reddit
I mean, we are surely going to follow.
The last lead foundry closed in america during obamas reign.
Afaik no new ones have opened.
MOXPEARL25@reddit
“WelL wE wiIL jUsT iMpOrT iT”
MandaloreZA@reddit
I mean all M80 ball is steel jacket. Works fine
Cliffinati@reddit
First off it's brass
Second your barrel should be harder than the mild steel used to jacket
gunsforevery1@reddit
Copper is what is on the bullet. Brass is on the case. Two different metals. (Yes I know that brass is an alloy of copper).
gunsforevery1@reddit
Perfectly safe.
Hail_CS@reddit
it’s very soft mild steel and it’s a really thin jacket. i haven’t seen any significant wear on my barrel but it would take significant amounts of A/B testing to be able to tell. you have probably shot a lot of steel jacket without knowing it
LopsidedResearch8400@reddit
Its typically pretty mild steel when they do this, its been done for a long time in most Soviet calibers.
itxploded@reddit
My ak still eats it up like candy.
A_Queer_Owl@reddit
ammunition should have a label like the nutrition facts on food. we should know what we're using is made from and how it's made.
Positive-Dot4869@reddit
Who gives a shit. Send it down range.
gafsstolemysoul@reddit
At an indoor range? Nah, I've put out too many fires at the indoor range I used to work at from peoples steel jacketed, cored, or bi metal jacket ammo lighting the rubber back stop on fire. That shit smells horrendous and makes you feel like shit even with our respirators on.
The worst was this old Vietnam vet who snuck some incendiary tracers past us in his pocket and shot them. We almost called the fire department for that burn, it wasn't splendid. Range smelt awful from burnt rubber for days after each backstop fire, the tracer incident smelt awful for a week or so.
cheese4432@reddit
any idea of how a bit of steel lights the rubber on fire? I believe you that ti happens, I'm just blanking on the how.
gafsstolemysoul@reddit
Steel striking Steel behind the rubber back stop or concrete causing sparks.
thejackal3245@reddit
I heard secondhand after it happened that my favorite local indoor range/gun store when I was a younger man burned down because of a similar incident with tracers.
There's a reason they want to check ALL your ammo.
gunsforevery1@reddit
Not all ranges are fine with shooting magnet ammo.
Positive-Dot4869@reddit
Shooting .308 at in indoor range is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Go out breathe fresh air and shoot steel targets
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
Yep, because everybody can just easily go shoot steel targets at the outdoor ranges that totally exist everywhere and are easily accessible. Why didn’t I think of that? Silly me.
Positive-Dot4869@reddit
Outdoor ranges? 😂
BLM land.
f0rcedinducti0n@reddit
You realize like 70% of the nations population is thousands of mile from BLM land?
GatEnthusiast@reddit
Not everyone lives within a reasonable distance of any outdoor range, let alone BLM or public land they can shoot on. Some people live HOURS away from the nearest option. Not everyone has it the same as you might have it.
tbrand009@reddit
I absolutely give a shit if I spend $100+ on ammo and then I can't even shoot it at my local range.
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
The range gives a shit, lol. That’s kinda the point here.
deadlycrawler@reddit
Thoes bullet cases are bimetal, they mix a soft steal into the copper jacket and make an alloy intending to make the jackets a bit more durable
ZeroPointSpecter@reddit
The problem is PMC Bronze .308 is not supposed to have a steel case or a steel/bimetal jacket.
MaxPlanck_420@reddit
I think the intent is to make manufacturing cheaper. Copper is durable enough and much kinder to your barrel. According to Google, steel currently costs $0.05-$0.08 per pound and copper costs $3.86-$4.95 per pound. If the reason for a steel jacket was performance reasons then they would mention it on the box.
tenacious_dbag@reddit
That price for steel is the scrap value. As someone who buys pallets upon pallets of sheet steel at work, the price is currently around $0.70 per pound.
MaxPlanck_420@reddit
Sure but the copper is scrap prices too. Copper sheets can cost up to $30 per pound. A place making ammo will be paying much closer to scrap prices then someone buying processed sheets for construction.
tenacious_dbag@reddit
I don’t think that is copper scrap price. From what I can see copper futures are around $6/lb and steel futures around $3100/ton, which comes out to $1.55/lb.
Also the $0.70/lb isn’t finished steel for construction. It’s plain HRPO sheet steel, usually at 48”x120”, CRS is admittedly gonna be a bit more. If you can find me steel for even three times what you said in your first comment, you would be my best friend and I’d buy an ungodly amount of it.
JefftheBaptist@reddit
PMC Bronze .308 is essentially South Korean M80 7.62 Ball. M80 has a bimetal jacket that is slightly magnetic.
Rdmtbiker@reddit
I have never shot a 308 at any indoor range
quantumcaper@reddit
.308 shouldn’t be fired indoors anyway. Not saying PMC shouldn’t be more transparent though.
EchoNineThree@reddit
Fudd statement. My local indoor range allows 300 Win Mag.
shatteringlass123@reddit
My local range lets you shoot 50 bmg
748aef305@reddit
Same, on the 100m rifle range only but totally allowed. They let you shoot 45-70, 223, 308, and just about anything BUT 50BMG on the pistol lanes.
EchoNineThree@reddit
Indoors? Thats impressive.
deelowe@reddit
Mine does as well. It's life changing. Gave my brother an eye infection. Lol
f0rcedinducti0n@reddit
Standard around here.
EchoNineThree@reddit
Where is here. I need to be there.
HWKII@reddit
He won’t have heard this reply.
EchoNineThree@reddit
Haha!
-E-Cross@reddit
Looks like you got some M80. I'd pick it up off you TBH
NoNameJustASymbol@reddit
"It's only on the bullet!"
LMAO!
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
What’s so weird about that statement to you?
NoNameJustASymbol@reddit
Of course it wouldn't be on the *brass*. Right?
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
You know brass-plated steel cases are a thing?
NoNameJustASymbol@reddit
facepalm.jpg
Never mind.
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
I don’t think it’s really that ridiculous to consider every possibility, especially when PMC Bronze is also advertised as non-magnetic and clearly is in this case.
shakeyjake23@reddit
Uhhhhh pliers will pull that round right out
dpmaxa@reddit
u/topgunkyle
TopGunKyle@reddit
Well that’s fucking dumb
ArceusTwoFour_Zero@reddit
Do you have a lot number or a box? I always end up putting a folded box of the bulk ammo i buy into the can, to save the lot number.
But the ammo is most likely bi metal. A steel jacket with a copper plating or wash and a lead core.
sludgehammr@reddit
This would get me insta-banned from my range if i shot it in the wrong place there. Yikes.
NathanNewport77@reddit
Full Metal jacket
RN93Nam@reddit
Does your indoor range have a 50cal rental by any chance?
Familiar_Fee_7891@reddit
The bullet jacket is mild steel. Mild steel jackets are 1/3 the price of gilding metal jackets (Sierra for example).
HerMajestysButthole2@reddit
Indoor ranges hate this one simple trick.
gunsforevery1@reddit
Bi metal jacket, doubt it’s steel core.
f0rcedinducti0n@reddit
Bi-metalic jackets are weakly paramagnetic.
C_IsForCookie@reddit
Fuck. This is going to ruin my MRI shooting accuracy for sure.
tinker_townie@reddit
kgr911@reddit
On my budget, I'd be soo frickin' pissed. Thanks for sharing

UpstairsSurround3438@reddit
Lot#?
brokenaxle69@reddit
What’s the date of mfg? Know what plant it came from?
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
No idea, I bought it like a year and a half ago and dumped it from the boxes into the ammo can, so the boxes are long gone.
HybridP365@reddit
I also dump my bulk ammo in cans like this. But I cut the side of the box off with the lot number so I can remember what type it is and report it if there's any issues. flat piece of cardboard doesn't take up much room.
rgb2071@reddit
This exactly. If there is a problem I want to know what batch and date.
QuokkaAMA@reddit
Are you sure that someone didn't put the brass magnet back in the wrong spot and you grabbed that one by mistake?
tykaboom@reddit
Probably steel jacket lead core.
No-Researcher-6186@reddit
Would this theoretically have any impact on accuracy?
lambda_six@reddit
Yes, the magnetization of the bullet after this test will make it turn in flight to always travel north
Bansheer5@reddit
And to add to that you should only use these on steel targets now. They’ll get pulled to the target and increase your accuracy.
jychihuahua@reddit
love this...
YuenglingsDingaling@reddit
But if you're shooting north you get an extra few fps.
L3xluth3rr@reddit
I heard it reverses the polarity, so it will basically exit the barrel, flip a 180 and travel backwards. So never put magnets near bullets
Franticalmond2@reddit (OP)
I have a large bolt cutter laying around, guess I could cut it open with that pretty easy.
