What to do with counterfeit 20 pound notes?
Posted by MatchEffective903@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 69 comments
I just sold a synthesiser on Facebook marketplace for £1000. The guy paid me in 20 pound notes. Whilst trying to pay them in at the post office I was told that £900 worth were fake. What am I supposed to do with them? Bin? Police? Self service checkout?

The Bank of England tells you to inform the police and obtain a NCO-1 form.

martinbaines@reddit
Plus, since they were counterfeit there is a civil claim against the person who bought the item to. The amount is within the levels for the County Court small claims procedure, so issuing a writ against them would be easy and not expensive. As its a civil claim a defence of not knowing they were counterfeit would be unlikely to be upheld as a defence.
Not_Sugden@reddit
unlikely the buyer used their real name
martinbaines@reddit
Maybe, maybe not. If you do not try though you certainly will not get your money back.
Secure_Music_6062@reddit
*ahem, the black market for whatever you need
i_am_simple_bob@reddit
I'd bet anyone on the black market would check for fake notes.
Secure_Music_6062@reddit
depends on the situation
CLWggg@reddit
The Post Office did not give you back £900 in counterfeit notes. This never happened.
MatchEffective903@reddit (OP)
I swear to god they did.
Notagelding@reddit
Look at op's profile 😂
BrotherClive@reddit
Was a tough read. Really hoping he got that excessive oil consumption issue sorted out on his Audi.
sockhead99@reddit
OP drives and Audi A4 alongside other forms of degradation and punishment
richbun@reddit
Top post.
Lassitude1001@reddit
Should I be glad I haven't verified by age and can't view the profile? Any spoiler on what I'm missing?
Notagelding@reddit
Op is into wearing women's underwear. I'm not one to kink shame but when they are getting called out about lying on a post, lots of those kinds of people have dubious profile histories.
Davski88@reddit
Jesus wept. That was not something I want to do again.
Rough-Sprinkles2343@reddit
I wish I didn’t. Wowzers.
D0wnb0at@reddit
Don’t know if I should upvote or downvote for making me view that. I’ll go with an upvote for the lolz
iFlytothemoon@reddit
I was gonna say the buyers had your pants down, but then I looked at your profile and you’d have probably loved that!
Vladamir_pootinn@reddit
Spend em in small shops with young weekend staff…. Look, I never claimed to be a good person
i_am_simple_bob@reddit
Probably won't do much but you could post a comment, review or whatever on his Facebook account. Does Facebook have a way to report accounts? Would maybe help someone else getting scammed.
Ok_Wrap5233@reddit
The post office gave them back to you?
No_Pea-1@reddit
Self checkouts wont accept them.
Dimac99@reddit
They aren't fake, otherwise the post office couldn't legally have given them back to you. You can spend them however you choose. An actual bank with actually trained tellers will bank your money, but obviously there's the issue of actually finding a branch these days to contend with.
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
Report to Amazon, report to police: Immediately take it to your local police station or report it online to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040). Retain the note, preferably in an envelope, to help police with forensic evidence.
veryblocky@reddit
What does Amazon have to do with anything?
Lassitude1001@reddit
Probably copy pasted an AI answer.
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
Yes, I did but Amazon error was mine.
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
Oh, yeah, Facebook even.
Bifanarama@reddit
They'll be more use than Action Fraud. Now renamed to Report Fraud, so that they have a slightly better excuse for doing absolutely nothing at all.
Aggravating-Tower317@reddit
wipe ur arse with them
AskUK-ModTeam@reddit
A top level comment (one that is not a reply) should be a good faith and genuine attempt to answer the question.
Itchy_Fox3117@reddit
The post office would not have given you £900 of fake notes back, they would have had to have been confiscated.
So_Gawjus@reddit
Don’t believe the post office gave you them back. Not for a second.
But let’s say this is true. You’re only other option is to contact the buyer (on the slim to non basis this was a genuine mistake- let’s say he didn’t know) and give him the chance to do the right thing. But failing that. Old bills your only option I guess.
Happy_Chief@reddit
If the buyer didnt know they were fake, they'll think OP is pulling a scam, surely?
So_Gawjus@reddit
It’s a no win either way. But if the seller was legit (real active profile etc) then you’d think they would be more inclined to resolve. You’d think being the operative words there.
Happy_Chief@reddit
You've more faith in people than me!
So_Gawjus@reddit
Playing devils adv tbh honest mate. This story stinks anyway because ain’t no post office giving back counterfeit notes.
Bifanarama@reddit
Arrange for your buyer to come and collect all the missing manuals, the stand, etc etc that you forgot to give him. Have the police waiting round the corner.
Enough_Response@reddit
unfortunately the seller just denies paying in fake notes and that's that. One word against another.
Enough_Response@reddit
Take them to the police because you've been frauded.
MatchEffective903@reddit (OP)
I mean they will take them but won't do fuck all about it will they.
Spicymargx@reddit
£900 worth of fake notes isn’t insignificant, so I imagine the police may be interested.
Enough_Response@reddit
exactly plus if he doesn't the post office may have already reported it (like they are legally required to do) and the police will be asking him why he hasnt reported it himself and therefore looks a lot like he committed the fraud.
Shriven@reddit
They definitely won't do anything if you don't report it. Grow up
Not_Sugden@reddit
they most certianly will. This guy has defrauded you of £900 and is likely doing it to other people, and with access to such a high amount he may have close links to organised crime. I dont know whether they can get you your money (you'd probably have to wait until hes convicted) but still
ActionBirbie@reddit
What?
Watchkeys@reddit
Well, what result are you looking for? You accepted some pieces of paper from someone you've never met, for an item worth £1000. It's shit and it's a crime, but when you're selling stuff, you have some responsibility for taking reasonable precautions to protect yourself. Everybody does.
You've been 'ad, mate. Report him to the Police. They're more likely to do something if they've had 50 reports about him than if nobody reports him 'because they won't do fuck all'. And they're more likely to do something if you tell them about it than if you don't.
IFornicus@reddit
Very true, yours may the complaint they have to follow up because they've have a number about this person before.
Lassitude1001@reddit
It's basically your only option outside of getting the person to come back via enticing with selling them something else without bringing up the notes. Which obviously isn't recommended.
Self service machines won't take them and any cashiers aren't supposed to give them you back if you try to sue them.
Remote-Pool7787@reddit
Report to the police because not only are you a victim of fraud, but the post office has broken the law by giving them back to you
Newreddituserw@reddit
The post office should have called police
Or if they were given to you by someone you should call police
poopolisher@reddit
I’d just spend them.
mdmnl@reddit
Just need to find someone selling something on Facebook for £900.
Over-Treat5374@reddit
Obviously your task is to get rid of them without financial loss. So just do the same - buy something for cash (via facebook marketplace for example), resell it for real money. Done.
superjambi@reddit
Buy drugs
FST_Fruckie-Poo@reddit
Wait, the post office gave you them back? How strange! You need to go to the police station, make a report & hand in the money.
Sorry you got scammed like that but if selling something so expensive on Marketplace then in future gotta be more vigilant and always, heck your cash. People always looking to scam out there so please be careful and inspect your notes next time. Most fakes are usually easy to tell. Trust NO ONE on 2nd hand sites like Marketplace or Vinted etc
Best of luck!!!
Hertfordgal@reddit
They shouldn’t have given them back to you but hand them to police and remove them from circulation. This is a daily occurrence on Facebook marketplace unfortunately. It’s the wild Wild West 😳
Jturnster89@reddit
Did the post office really give you them back or did you just realise you've been had a bit late? Either way report to FB and the police, but expect to just eat the loss and learn a lesson I'm afraid.
girlsunderpressure@reddit
The Post Office should have kept them. They won't work at self service checkouts, and attempting to use them now that you are aware they are fake would be illegal. You can report it to the police, or not. You could pursue the buyer for payment via the small claims process but without proof you might struggle.
Bellatrixforqueen@reddit
I’m very surprised they let you keep them -when I worked in a shop we weren’t allowed to have them back and it was pretty dangerous
Lower-Ad-2082@reddit
Agreed, my partner was a retail manager and they had to keep any fake notes and they were sent off to be destroyed.
clitorasClive@reddit
You thought about buying a synthesiser on Facebook Market place?
Mglfll@reddit
Knowingly using them is a crime. Take to the local police with the guys details
Plus911uk@reddit
The post office would have kept them and called police with that amount
eric-artman@reddit
You can use it as a burger base, make a £20 pound salad, plenty of options.
geekypenguin91@reddit
Trying to spend them yourself, now you know they're fake, would be a crime.
To be honest, I'm surprised the post office gave you them back and didn't keep them to be destroyed
George_Salt@reddit
The Post Office aren't supposed to give them back to you.
