Do you say football match or football game?

Hello there I'm from France and here in france we says a "Match de foot" that can be translated to "Match of football" but I know that in english people say football game or football match.
Now my question is do you say: I'm watching a football match or a football game?

A football match, a game of football.
fads1878@reddit
The footy

In that context probably“football match”, but other contexts it’s a bit interchangeable. Like “man of the match” but “game of two halves”.

so for example I want to ask for the result of last arsenal match
I should say hey mate what was the result of the latest arsenal match or game?
pielad@reddit
“Are Arsenal still bottling it?” should suffice
sangokuhomer@reddit (OP)
hahaha love it
UpsetIllustrator7@reddit
I’d also consider “what was the result?” Or “what was the score?”
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
You would probably say "what was the arsenal score?" Rather than match or game.
QueefInMyKisser@reddit
I reckon either works. I think I’d tend to say match, but it wouldn’t sound wrong with game.

Ok thanks for the explanation.

Going to the game / playing a game / watching the match

I think if fans were talking to each other the might say "are you going to the game this week" or "is the game on Sky this week"? but you could say match but using game feels better here for me. I also think different towns and cities would have favourite words, some people might "say is the footy or football on Sky" . If the game was good game you might sat "that was a great game" you can also say great match too though.
Derfel60@reddit
Id generally say match unless it was a 2 legged match then i might say game
prustage@reddit
Football match, cricket match, rugby match.
Only the Americans say "game".
Mickosthedickos@reddit
Generally it's match.
But where I am in Glasgow, you would generally say game
Nosworthy@reddit
"The match"
VictorAnichebend@reddit
I don’t say football at all; I just say ‘watching the match’.
sangokuhomer@reddit (OP)
ok so a football match then
UpsetIllustrator7@reddit
Are you watching the match? That’s more used than “football match”. My mates would think I was a robot otherwise.
BaBaFiCo@reddit
Mainly "the football", as in, I'm going down the football. If I was playing it would be a game.
BillPayers@reddit
Football match
MrCowabs@reddit
Match is the only correct answer
TheSmokeyGiant031@reddit
Going the game.
smith9447@reddit
You play a game of football but attend a football match
sangokuhomer@reddit (OP)
thanks for the explanation.
Wonderful_Formal_274@reddit
I use them both interchangeably I’d say.
Smooth-Captain-6151@reddit
The only way I'd use game would be "the game's just finished", don't even think I say "The game's on".
Decard_Pain@reddit
Only use game when playing, match when watching.
jammy445@reddit
I just say “I’m watching the football” , or going to football or whatever, don’t say game or match 😂
togtogtog@reddit
Football match.
Game feels very American.
PianoMiddle346@reddit
Yes, this is correct
Eyup_Amigo@reddit
Match
