OK, Toyota driver here ...
Does someone ( ... you?? ...) drive that behemoth ONTO the trailer and position it?
Or is it lifted on by crane or something (thinking that would be net faster and safer)?
(I've seen tracked excavators self-load, but I don't see how one could do that with a 4-wheeled vehicle without falling off on the turn.)
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
John Deere and CAT loads them for us when they're new. Otherwise, we load and unload them ourselves. At shipping ports, we load the new ones and they'll unload them. Other companies usually have us do it all. But yeah, we drive it on. The neck detaches (RGN =removable goose neck) and the front of the trailer sits on the ground when dropped.
DeeDee_Z@reddit
Waitaminnit ... you drive it on from one -end- of the trailer?
OK that definitely explains everything. Such a mental obstacle I had to get over -- I just assumed you had to drive it on from the side and turn the damn thing!
Thanks!
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
Here's a close up of the front of the trailer, where it separates. The deck will sit on the ground and you just drive whatever into it. RGN separation point https://imgur.com/gallery/ED44g24

Ive done all 4 hauling a Tadano GR1000XLL4. 119β long, 14β4β tall, 11β wide, and approx 200k

Noice!

Double-check your permits; on mine, SD had me taking SD-34 to the WY line, but WY starting on US-212. I lost a whole Sunday in Kimball waiting on new ones.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
That's messed up. They had me use 85 to 212.
cnash@reddit
Yeah, I think somebody just left the last two turns off, because it should have been, and when they fixed it it was, [unexplained detour through Pierre], I-90, SD-34, US-85, US-212 to the border.
Basically just a typo, but I didn't see the problem until Saturday evening, and the permits team was gone until Monday.
nriojas@reddit
Knowing ATS that shit was $6 a mile π
cnash@reddit
I think they charged JD about $4 a mile, before fuel surcharge. 'Cause it paid about $2k to the driver, who's getting 24%, for about a 2000 mile route.
That's better than normal, even for permitted OD, but not by a huge margin.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
Believe it or not, the tiny 17k lb load paid way more than this one. But you're right, it's ATS, lmao.
kwtransporter66@reddit
How the hell you getting away with only 2 axles on the trailer and no pusher on the tractor?
cnash@reddit
JD's good at positioning these on the trailer, so your axle weights come out 12500/38000/39000-ish, which is comfortably inside the range you can get routine permits for.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
Permits allow for 20k per axle on the drives & trailer. 13k on the steer. If you think about it, it's the same as hauling 40k on a spread axle set, except they're not spread. This is about as heavy as I haul with this truck.
starlux33@reddit
How does that work with your axel weights? I thought you only got 34k?
pianodude01@reddit
You're generally allowed to apply for a permit for 20k lbs per axle in most states as long as the tires and axles are rated for that.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
You're correct. Most of mine are for 20k pounds each and 13k on the steer.
pianodude01@reddit
Itty bitty steer
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
For sure. It's crazy seeing our heavier trucks with steer tires bigger than their drive tires. I've only driven one of those once. It was a little different in the steering. That particular one had a stiff ass clutch.
pianodude01@reddit
lol yeah my steer is rated for 22k lbs, it makes turning a bitch
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
I have permits that allow for all of my dimensions. It has to be non-divisible for the over weight. Meaning, one item. The over width and height need at least one non-divisible item of the dimension that you're getting permitted for. Meaning, I can haul multiple pieces that are too wide or too tall, but only one if it's too heavy.

It's missing the MP16 head. It's bigger when it's fully assembled.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
The last one I hauled had it on there. There is a batch of these going onto a ship, so maybe they're getting shipped separately.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
Right?
Johnny_Rascal2@reddit
Maybe you could tape some broom handles together off the rear bumper.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
That's so appropriate, lol, broom handles, as I've been called a witch more times than I can count.

What kind of black magic and old Indian tricks are you using?
BouncingSphinx@reddit
It's so handy that the baler section actually folds down like it does.
Auquaholic@reddit (OP)
And it has securement points for chains so you're not trying to figure out how to strap that section.

That machine looks 90k lbs by itself!

It's a cotton picker / baller. And yeah, it feels that heavy in the mountains.
