Molle Panel Systems: practical/useful?
Posted by Snoo_33111@reddit | overlanding | View on Reddit | 46 comments
Hello all,
I’m working on an install guide and review of a Molle panel system for my 2013 4Runner. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience living with an interior Molle panel system in your truck.
Are they useful for daily life/outdoor activities?
Do they get in the way or rattle?
Any feedback is really appreciated.

Got these MOLLE panels installed on my JL — pretty solid, no rattles at all.

I wanted one, and it would make rear storage easier but man I just don’t want to give up the window space. Granted I’m in a two door Jeep, but that’s a pretty big window to have cluttered with equipment. That’s my opinion as of now of the Molle panels, although one along the roof would be nice on the hard top

Oh yeah, im sure there are a bunch of options for the jeep. So far I’ve found it to be useful. But looking for more potential options for my uses.

On the interior, cheaper pegboard works for smaller, lighter items as well.

This is one of the problems with molle panels is that they're so pricey and hard to work with.
Not everything needs to hold like 1000 lbs.
I want something like this for the back seat of my Tacoma (I deleted the seats) and a molle panel is like $595.
That's crazy expensive.
Like right now I want to have a magnetic molle panel for my shell and I could cut something easily if it was just plastic.
I only want to mount clothing to it and stuff.
I'm not trying to mount a 20 lb battery or something.

I'd suspect you could find a 3d printed version and get it done up for way less. For accessories and radios it doesnt need to be steel.
brainhack3r@reddit
That's actually something worth considering.
Actually, that might be a good product for the inside of trucks. Just 3D print ones that have lower load rating BUT are super cheap and can hold light weight objects like fruit, water bottles, etc.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
that looks next level.

We tried to be frugal and efficient with our build. I think I documented a lot of it on this site.

I got mine from the company in exchange for the review video.. so it was the right price.. they just sent it out no-strings-attached, trusting I'd make the vid. so it worked out pretty good.
GhostNode@reddit
I use the shit out of mine.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
Nice, that’s what I wanna hear! Can I ask what kind of stuff you use it for?
GhostNode@reddit
I do a lot of ha radio, camping, hiking, and bring my dog with nearly always. I’ve got the panels and the shelf.
Left side: roll of shop towels, first aid kit for humans and dog. Dog water bottle. Human error bottle. Hand sanitizer. I hang a 30’ leash for the dog we use for on-leash county parks, an extension cord, and a 50’ rope for.. whatever, collapsible dog dish.
Right side is mainly pouches containing tools, flashlights, electrical field repair kit (pinecil, solder, wire, digital multi meter, tons of fuses (blade and barrel), batteries, portable battery recharge packs,
Shelf has a camping hammock and straps, dog blanket, towels for dog and human, a small rubber bin with a few pair of thick work gloves, two stocking hats, extra wool socks, warm gloves, I have another bin with granola, protein bars, a few mountain house meals, jerky, a few camping sporks, a small spatula and a small pair of tongs. Got a rubber container of dog food. Also have Ratchet straps, dog treats, deodorant spray, toothbrush and paste, small ISOPRO canister and micro burner and a steel French press that can be used to boil water or make coffee.
I use literally everything mentioned multiple times a summer. When we want to camp, road trip, hike, fish, I know I have everything we’ll ever need and we can just go without having to pack a ton of shit or run through a gear checklist.
I’ve also got an Overland Vehicle Systems topper on the rack with sleeping bags, bigger camping grill, mattress pads, tent, and folding chairs, for the same reason.

"Human error bottle" sent me.

That is a great setup! This gives me ideas for uses. Thank you
I got a set for free from CarTrimHome to do a Youtube install & review video, so I'm looking forward to using it for Camping and storage for items I want to keep on the truck at all times.

I’ve got one on the passenger side of my 4Runner and find it useful. The panel itself doesn’t rattle but if things aren’t secured to it well you’ll hear them clanking around
NewportB@reddit
Any advantages on having it on the passenger side? I also like to go with single panel but on the driver side so it won’t block view.
-UppercaseNumbers-@reddit
No specific advantage, I don’t even know necessarily why I chose that side except maybe it was more accessible at the time of install…
5olArchitect@reddit
Do these use suction cups od do 4runners have a better attachment mechanism?
-UppercaseNumbers-@reddit
No suction cups - there are three points where they attach with bolts: the garment hook at the top (hook is re-installed over the bolt) and two other pre-existing threaded locations at the bottom. This specific one is from Victory 4x4 https://www.victory4x4.com/product/V4RRMP.html
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
I want to get some of these attachments for fishing poles as well
Zetterbearded@reddit
Not a 4Runner but in my Gx I mounted rotopax water jugs with taps to use for cooking and to give to my dogs. Since I cook off the back door it's always in reach.
Far_District9145@reddit
Mine currently hold: first aid kit, trench shovel, forest axe, inflation pump, long pump hose, and pouches with tow/recovery gear, ratchet tie downs, spare black and down blanket (also good for making stuff invisible from outside) and assorted random useful shit. Now all this crap is secure and not taking up cargo space. Yes, worth it for me.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
Thank you! I think it will be helpful for us as well for road trips or car camping
peskywombats@reddit
They look great on social with huge knives and unnecessary tools stuffed into black bags with cool American flag patches.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
I agree. To be honest, I think I was drawn to them at first because they look cool. But, Now that I've installed them and got some feedback on the install video, I'm starting to see some practical uses for car camping and roadtrips.
peskywombats@reddit
I was kind of joking. If you like them and use them, cool. The majority of use cases I've seen are immensely unnecessary but do offer overlanding's small component market a never ending vertical.
Sel_drawme@reddit
Yep. Both sides on the interior. Rotopax for water, bunch of pouches for different things (first aid, admin, radio, gun, mags), fire extinguisher, flashlight, axe, etc.
Plano box for everything else.
5olArchitect@reddit
Not sure but I’ve been trying to figure out how to install one on my Rivian for extra internal storage. Probably just going to use it for recovery gear, I.e. max tracks and shovel.
Qwell41@reddit
Not sure if this is what you’re looking for or not

5olArchitect@reddit
that's exactly what I was thinking about, but I'm not sure if I love the suction cups.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I’ve been considering something on the exterior as well, maybe that will be next. I love those Rivians. I’m sure that’ll look great.

i’m not a fan. gives off r/iamverybadass vibes, and adds weight.
i am near OCD organized, and i don’t have any problem staging my gear with drawers and velcro
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
I was hesitant.. But receiving it free for review from CarTrimHome changed my mind.. I need to get better at organizing my gear for sure. I'd love a drawer system, but I'm concerned it would get in the way of sleeping while car camping.
cpt-queso@reddit
Got one for my grand Cherokee wk, use it daily for Tools and Essentials
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
That is a nice setup, especially since you were able to keep the cargo cover.
cpt-queso@reddit
Thx, You can choose different mounting points for different heights, or even Drill some Yourself.
The best Part there is No need to screw it into the frame or anything Like that it "presses" itself into the window frames when mounted and is Rock solid, it doesnt rattle or Love, i can Shake the whole car grabbing onto it

While install

I have same shelf kit in my LC250. Shelf is awesome, I use it a ton. Molle panels - been trying to figure stuff out. Right now I have on it paper towel, first aid kit and small pouch with fire starting supplies for campfires.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what will work best for my needs. I'm thinking 'go kit' items and car camping equipment. It's seem to be a quality system.
Snoo_33111@reddit (OP)
u/mil1ion Here is the link to the install & review review I made on the system I received from CarTrimHome. The table mounts to the bottom of the shelf. It's an add-on to the system that is available on their site.
