What is the best value-for-money shop for mens office/smart clothing?

I am a university student who is graduating and set to start a corporate job soon. The dress code is your normal smart corporate attire (shirts, trousers, smart shoes, maybe the occasional quarter zip).
Being a student currently, I don't have loads to spend on new clothing right now, although I obviously still need some before I start.
Men in office jobs in the UK - where do you get your smart clothing that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Next? M&S? Anywhere I might not have heard of that is worth a look?
romeo__golf@reddit
I wear chinos and a shirt for work.
I've got two pairs of chinos (blue and stone) from M&S,
I get shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt and they're usually on some sort of 4-for-£100 offer. They wash well and I usually buy another 4 once a year to build up a decent rotation, and sell older ones on Vinted once they're a bit worn or I'm bored of them. I've got 11 at the moment which is plenty for 4 days/week in the office.
ermCaz@reddit
I've more or less just done this too, 2 pairs of chinos from ASOS (£25 each) and 2 shirts from the next sale (£9 & £11).
Educational_Try_6105@reddit
use vinted and get it tailored/altered
it’s way cheaper (alterations are v cheap)
a lot of the off rack stuff wont fit well on you and you’ll look like a sixth former/recruiter
matt1345@reddit
I can imagine people doing this with suit jackets etc, but not really with shirts(?)
nandos1234@reddit
People sell new with tags stuff on vinted all the time as well.
SquirrelIll8180@reddit
Which is usually fake Chinese copies, let's be honest. Cheaper to just buy these directly from dhgate.
nandos1234@reddit
Maybe if you’re buying Nike trainers or something like that. Most people aren’t selling fake M&S shirts.
SquirrelIll8180@reddit
True. I mostly see brand name stuff being sold new with tags for 60 to 70% cheaper than retail
OneRandomTeaDrinker@reddit
Not if it’s from like M&S or Next, people don’t bother faking those. But you’ll pay about 40-60% less than buying it at the shops.
Mysterious_Beach_673@reddit
Shirts can be frequently found on Vinted and eBay brand new with tags or in their packets. As long as you know what size you need, eg collar size and whether slim fit or regular fit.
SeeYouWarrior@reddit
Ready to wear off the rack fits most people, why wouldnt it fit this person?
Educational_Try_6105@reddit
Fit in sense you can put it on? Sure, but it won’t look good most likely. It operates on an assumption that because of one measure like chest, waist or collar, your other measurements are proportional to it, when we’re all different
You’ll get a collar gap on jackets, sleeve length wrong, trouser leg too short, trousers/shirts too tight in wrong places etc
Good second hand stuff and alteration just looks better and is cheaper
you can even get really good nearly new charles tywritt shirts for like £10-15
SeeYouWarrior@reddit
I get where youre coming from, but reqdy to wear is the righr choice a lot of the time and it will fit. When you find ready to wear that fits how you like it with no collar gap, shoulder divots, strained buttoning point etc, then you're set. Buying 2nd hand is also hard if you have no well fitting garment to compare measurements with
littletorreira@reddit
I have a friend and I always said until we were about 35 he always looked like a 6th former who had just got on the bus home whenever he was wearing a shirt and tie. He ironically was a recruiter at that point.
semenonabagel@reddit
Vinted! M&S or Next shirts are about £30 in store but on Vinted you can get them for less than £10
Plodo99@reddit
Yes, can go to the shop to try on the right size then go home and buy it off Vinted
SnooMacarons4225@reddit
Just beware of yellow armpit stains of second hand shirts lol
OneRandomTeaDrinker@reddit
On Vinted, check pictures of armpits and if it’s stained but marked “very good” or above, you can absolutely return it as it’s not as described. They’re a bit of a shit platform in many ways but they often side with the buyer if something is stained when it shouldn’t be
Independent-Cap4174@reddit
Charles Tyrwhitt run sales frequently where you can bag Non Iron shirts for about 30-35 pounds. Good quality and usually last years.
Next, M&S, Uniqlo are also decent value for money
luckeratron@reddit
I feel like Charles Tyrwhitts shirts have got really expensive in the last couple of years. I must be missing the sales
golfkart90@reddit
Google ct introductory offer
Brave_Assumption6@reddit
Next is good and even Asda George.
Potential-Bird-5826@reddit
Matalan for me, then I usually get them tailored to fit better as I'm what the clothing types call an unusual shape.
Ultimate_os@reddit
M&S
spaceshipcommander@reddit
Charles tywritt for the shirts. Go and get measured in store.
mattjimf@reddit
Find a charity shop in a well off area of town. You'll typically get good shirts and trousers there for very little.
esp_py@reddit
I came here to say this!
Bonus if you find the day they have sales
WhiteDiamondK@reddit
M&S all day long. Quality.
If you can’t afford M&S, take a look at Sainsbury’s Tu. A more limited rage but some good business basics.
Ancient_phallus_@reddit
Vinted pal. It’s amazing what people will get rid of that’s still brand new.
Pius_Thicknesse@reddit
TM Lewin have a massive 70-80% off mid season sale right now
SeeYouWarrior@reddit
If you're not into tailoring as a hobby then you can get a lot of clothing for cheap as you wont care about smaller details that will run up the cost of clothing. However, if that is the case then you want to prioritise comfort, and the slim fit stuff you see around will be unconfortable unless you genuinely are very slim, and at that point slim fit should still drape and not be clinging to your body.
There is so much advice to give on this topic that it requires some reflection to think about what questions you want answers to. Keep in mind that its a bad idea to buy a full wardrobe in one go because you will change in what you like wearing, so buying slow to make sure you buy things you are happy wearing is important. You want to feel confident through your clothes at work because you're there for so many hours per week!
Theres a saying, for buying nenswear, that you can only pick 2 out of 3: quick, quality, and cost. Cheap and fast will sacrifice quality, quick and high wuality will be expensive etc.
I would advise against the shirt and trouser look without a jacket personally. A navy suit is an easy answer to your problem tbh. Consider oxford shirta if you can get aeay with it bc they go with a suit and tie equally as much as jeans and trainers. Speaking of shoes get dark shoes, not tan. Get 2 pairs of shoes to rotate them as they'll need a days rest between wears to last you longer than 6 months
Mysterious_Beach_673@reddit
Try places like Next Clearance section on their website, Secret Label website, Brand Alley website. If you know your sizes, incl collar size, fit etc try Vinted and eBay, you get brand new with tags items far cheaper on those
NaveedQ@reddit
Try Primark to get you by for the first few months. When your salary is paid start building you work clothes cupboard then.
JarJarBinksSucks@reddit
Try your local charity shops
JamesHuman99@reddit

MandMDirect.com
zzady@reddit
Matalan definitely the best value choice
TheGazStar@reddit
M&S and Next are my general everyday go to. Sainsbury’s isn’t bad either.
For the more full formal situations (interviews, board meetings, client meetings) - Marc Darcy are pretty affordable and I find the quality decent.
Ok_Monitor_7897@reddit
Sainsbury's is good.
Chrolan1988@reddit
As a newbie I really wouldn’t worry too much about it.
Next is good if you are thin, M&S are near enough Charles Tyrwhitt prices and for the difference I would just got to Charles if you are willing to pay M&S prices.
My first ever work suit was from Matalan in 2004 and I was flooded with compliments when wearing it at 16.
Now at 38 me and all my colleagues basically wear Charles T, to an extent it’s a bit embarrassing now us all wearing the same thing 😅 but you can’t argue with their quality in today’s world and they offer a great fit.
Honestly even Tu clothing could offer a shirt or a suit that looks great on you. It’s more about what looks right on you and what fits well.
Shop around, try a charity shop or 2 sometimes you just find what works for you.
Regthedog2021@reddit
Ok depends how smart you need to be - slater’s will find you a suit to a limited budget and tailor it to fit you - trousers shortened jacket narrowed etc
However if you are an “off the peg”’fit then George at Asda is a good shout as are charity shops in wealthier areas
For shoes always buy the best quality, best fitting pair you can afford - this is an investment in your health and wellbeing- better shoes actually keep you healthy and more energetic in the day
Various-Jellyfish132@reddit
Next for suits, buy at least 2x trousers per jacket as they will wear out first and one is useless without the other
Competitive_Rub_9590@reddit
I’ve always bought my suits from next but the last few months I’ve been shopping for a lot of my clothes on Vinted you get some great bargains on there
Do_You_Like_Owls@reddit
For my first job I bought a cheap pair of trousers and shirt from Asda.
But after that I always got suits from Slater's Menswear. They're a small chain with branches in Manchester and Brum that I know of. Probably in other major cities too.
If you go in and tell them your budget they can point you to the racks you can afford and the guy with the tape will measure you too.
They offer free basic tailoring if you need it.
Highly recommend them - I went there for decent suits for years.
slimboyslim9@reddit
Vinted is great for polos and shirts etc but Next is also really good for the money, especially where you want to try stuff on (more important for trousers and shoes imo).
VariousClassroom8056@reddit
M&S shirts and chinos, you can get ex-M&S or new with tags stuff pretty cheap on eBay.
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
Matlan, George at Asda, https://www.choicediscount.com/ check out the stores for this last one
Appropriate-Cheek970@reddit
When I first started working in an office I used to buy all my work shirts, trousers and jumpers in Matalan. That being said Asda has some smart clothes at decent prices. Shoes I used to get off of ebay, others have said vinited, but shoes can be hard to trust from there.
