Where would you choose to live between Leeds and Newcastle, and why?

As some one who has never been north of the Midlands, we will have to move to either of these places for work. I'll be working in Newcastle and my partner in Leeds. We are looking to buy a home, and would like some perspective on which would be the better place to live in. Any input would be appreciated.

You'll bothe be commuting to Leeds and Newcastle? Or you have to choose between one? Confused.
The mid point between the two would have a killer commute for both of you if you did it daily.
If you're moving to just one of them I think Newcastle is an infinitely better city in every way.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
We would like to settle in one and either of us commute to the other. We wanted to settle in either, and not somewhere in between so that in case of an emergency with our kids, we can be there immediately.
Nythern@reddit
Newcastle will always be cheaper housing-wise. The cost of living is much better up north. However, for settling down I would think about what your priorities are. For me, work opportunities are more important than cost of living - otherwise I'd live somewhere like Lincoln, Scunthorpe, Dunfermline, or some dead town where rent is dirt cheap (but at the cost of relatively few work opportunities).
If you were to relocate to Leeds, consider this: from Leeds, you could regularly commute into Manchester and Sheffield as well, which gives you the work opportunities of three fairly large cities. Whereas with Newcastle, you will only also have commutable opportunies in Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
These two places have less than 500,000 people between them, compared to the over 1 million living in Manchester and Sheffield. Not only does Leeds offer more opportunities due to there being far more people in a commutable range, but there are also way more companies (and companies of different types!) based in Manchester, which is ultimately both England and the UK's third largest city (+ de facto capital of the North).
So if youre thinking about settling down for the long run, I'd personally choose Leeds only because there are greater and more numerous commutable work opportunities should you ever lose your job, be made redundant, or desire a career change. There are also more further and higher education opportunities around, and so if your children go to uni I'm sure you'd ideally want them to be only 1-2 hours away if they were ever in an emergency.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
We are both in permanent contracts, so don't anticipate either of us leaving our respective jobs. Thank you though.
RogeredSterling@reddit
That's a nearly 200 mile, 4 hour commute... Did you not check this? One of you would never see or help with the kids.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
We both are consultants in the NHS, mine is a very niche speciality. So, my options are frankly limited.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Also, why Newcastle? Genuinely curious.
The_39th_Step@reddit
I like the beach in Newcastle and the public transport is better. Both are good cities
Rpqz@reddit
That commute would drive me absolutely insane but, each to their own. That being said, if you're doing the drive anyway then get the value for money of being near Teesside.
Thirsk is the midpoint, being an hour from both. It's a pretty lovely market town with easy access to North York moors, York and the coast. It's also 10 minutes from the A1.
Yarm is also a good pick, but I'd rather be local to York than Middlesbrough.
iamabigtree@reddit
I mean Harrogate if you can afford it. But who can. Otherwise you'd have to give some idea of budget otherwise throwing darts at a map is about as useful.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
A budget of 500 - 600k
iamabigtree@reddit
You'll probably have your pick then. I would consider York first. Trains into Leeds are frequent and it's the start of the fast line to Newcastle so you can do that in an hour.
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
Definitely a good idea!
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you, I'll look into it.
The_39th_Step@reddit
This is a good shout - York is lovely
vince10123@reddit
I would probably pick somewhere in Scotland.... but if had to I would go nearer Leeds as much more in the area and much better infrastructure if your going anywhere. Also as already put it's generally warmer
bishibashi@reddit
I like Leeds, but have spent a fair bit of time there, which is why I’d choose Newcastle. Local landscape more rugged and interesting to me, prettier city and I like geordies.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you, nice to get a perspective from some one who has lived in these places.
GeorgeN95X1@reddit
My wife and I moved to Newcastle from Leicestershire last year, even though she's originally from Leeds.
Newcastle (or Northumberland if you want to live further out) is mega. Close to the coast, close to a big city, got an airport that flies direct to most places (and Amsterdam/Dubai for long haul connections).
Northumberland National Park on your doorstep.
Geordies are really friendly folk too.
gwa66@reddit
Newcastle over Leeds any day. Your budget will get you a good home. Maybe get more bang for your bucket in Leeds, but the downside is, you'll be in Leeds...
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you.
Gary_Garibaldi@reddit
Live in North Allerton. Easy distance to both.
But if it had to be Leeds or Newcastle, I'd choose Newcastle probably. I am from Leeds originally, went to uni in Newcastle and now lived in London for the last twenty year.
The transport system in Leeds is shit. Newcastle is a beautiful city, the beach at tynemouth is nice, the coast up in Northumberland is stunning, slightly cheaper, nice place to raise a family as generally less crime.
I say this objectively, despite being a proud Yorkshireman and passionate Leeds united fan
Adzprestage@reddit
Personally I would choose Newcastle as in my personal opinion people from there are a better "class" of people they are nicer and Newcastle is a much cleaner place.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you.
Hefty_Tip7383@reddit
York!
Antique_Location_514@reddit
can either of you work flexi time/wfh? i’d take that into consideration when choosing.. if the person who works in the city you don’t live in you could save a bit on travel as well as the hour+ long commute
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately that is not something which we can do, in our lines of work.
Moist_gooch90@reddit
I moved to the North East from down South last year. I would choose Newcastle. I found driving in Leeds too stressful.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you, we are moving from the Midlands.
propostor@reddit
Commuting between Leeds and Newcastle sounds diabolical, whoever has to do it in your relationship will end up very resentful.
Live somewhere in between the two, like Thirsk or Northallerton.
Fanoflif21@reddit
They can't because then no one is directly on hand should something happen with the children. Potentially they would both be hours away.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
We currently live in Leicester, and I used to commute to London for work. I get your perspective, but I am used to it?
RoundSection6369@reddit
Thirsk or Northallerton probably worth a look.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you.
noodledoodledoo@reddit
Are you both commuting every day? I wouldn't recommend this plan if so, that's a huge commute.
Ahleanna-D@reddit
Although I’ve been to both cities, I have not been to most of the area in between. Just looking at a map then googling, though, Thirsk looks somewhat equidistant and is generally considered a good place to live. It’s probably a good starting point for your search.
FeistyFinder@reddit
Being totally biased, but Newcastle. In short, it’s a great city, close to coastlines and a short drive away from some amazing places in Northumberland etc. Depends on what your lifestyle is like too I guess though.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Fairly sedate lifestyle, occasional quiet nights out, primarily kid focused.
BasisOk4268@reddit
Leeds probably
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Why would you choose that over Newcastle? What appealed to you?
BasisOk4268@reddit
Slightly warmer, better nightlife, closer to the rest of the country for excursions. Slightly worse chicken parm though
hermansherberts@reddit
Newcastle for me, the people are great and some beautiful places and coastlines.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Thank you.
-adult-swim-@reddit
Thats a hell of a trek to be making regularly. Darlington is pretty close to the middle, but ive only ever driven past it. Harrogate is very nice and just outside of Leeds, but a mission to get to for Newcastle. Middlesbrough is also somewhere between them and has all the pros and cons of a large town/city. But the road connection isnt quite as good.
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
We wouldn't be making a daily commute, say about 2 weeks a month.
TomLondra@reddit
The obvious answer is: NEITHER. Live in Richmond and you will both have the same distance to travel, with the added benefit of Richmond
Appropriate_Log1654@reddit
York, Northallerton, Thirsk...
Villages surrounding Middlesbrough/Stockton
Melon_Hands@reddit
Why not live somewhere in between? Harrogate is lovely, but more centrally-placed ones would be Thirsk, Northallerton and Leeming is straight off the A1 (some would love that, some would hate that).
Darker_Midnite@reddit (OP)
Just want to be in a place where either one of us could be with our kids, in the event of some sort of emergency.
Asuperniceguy2@reddit
It is slightly warmer in Leeds.
