Pencil Grippers

Was I the only one who would chew on these instead of bothering to use them? I feel like they may have disappeared along with learning cursive.

These things never worked. Maybe my grip was off or I have weird hands, but they were uncomfortable or slid down the pencil.

That sweet smell was soooo good

Reminds me of the trolls ou could stick on the end of your pencil. Then you spin the pencil between your palms and the hair on the troll all sticks straight up

Pencil grippers just made holding the pencil uncomfortable for me, so I didn't use them.
Perhaps I wasn't using them correctly?

A teacher gave me these because I don't write correctly. Still don't. You're not supposed to hold your pencil or pen at the tip I've heard.
whamburglar@reddit
Wait, I've been doing it wrong for 40+ years?
-threefeetoffun@reddit
Yep. They really didn't like that.

Which is ironic as I have great penmanship (is that still a thing?) I print very clearly and do the same with cursive.

I concur.

Same! Never made a blind bit of difference.

20 years ago I was told I write like someone just learning print. Today's world that never comes up.

My school liked using ones that looked like little knuckles. They had moulded grooves where you were supposed to rest your fingers. I was never given one because I apparently gripped my pencil correctly, but I had friends who used them and who let me have a go of them sometimes. They felt a lot more comfortable than the fat triangular ones.
Yes, there was a left handed version as well, but I didn’t see too many lefties being given them. Not sure if it’s because there weren’t many lefties, or if they didn’t need to use pencil grips as much.

I have seen those and never used them.
Ultimate-Flexionator@reddit
if you needed one of these you were wiggety wiggety wack.

The Mack Daddy make you JUMP!
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
We had them for the same reason as Yikes! Pencils. (And not for using the pencil)

I remember using these in the 80s, but they were off to the side of my desk rather than on my pencil. I remember using them, but I don't recall eating them. Did chew on some, which I think were salty. Could be mistaken, though, as this would've happened 35-40 years ago. As an aside, these buggers made writing and drawing a right pain in my hand. 😐

I use one of these on my Apple Pencil

I remember finally getting my hands on one of these for the first time when I was a kid! DUDE. The latest accessory!
My immediate review? How the FUCK do people write with this thing?! Felt like contorting my fingers around blades!
What they were DEFINITELY good for was keeping your pencil from rolling off the desk every 7 minutes, which was quite valuable to my little undiagnosed ADHD ass. Naturally, I lost mine after a day or two and proceeded to forget they exist for 38 years…

I never did. I’d always chew them until age 8 when my teachers and mom were like nope you’re done!
batastronaut@reddit
I could go for a hit right now
MetsFan3117@reddit (OP)
Leaning back in my chair and ignoring my teacher… makes sense now that I chewed a gripper given my TMJ.
batastronaut@reddit
Subpar for pencil gripping, OUTSTANDING for chewing
Desert_Rush39@reddit
I still use these on the end of my Xacto knives. Keeps them from rolling off the workbench, and since I bought safety orange, they're easy to find.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
Quite possibly the smartest use for these I've seen mentioned.
Creepy_Throat8335@reddit
I can feel this picture!
kiomansu@reddit
I can smell this picture.
cyberdude419@reddit
I don’t know if these even qualified as a fad, brings me back though
ShantyTender@reddit
I enjoyed this small time in history

Just looking at these make my uncomfortable. They weren't great
