Upgrade Advice: 7900 XTX vs. RTX 5070 Ti for Sim Racing & Video Editing

I’m currently looking to upgrade my RTX 3060 Ti. Lately, I’ve been putting a lot of hours into Forza Horizon 5, but I’m constantly hitting the VRAM ceiling, which has prompted me to look for something with more headroom.
I prefer high raw rasterization performance over upscaling technologies (DLSS/FSR), which led me to the 7900 XTX and the RTX 5070 Ti. In the New Zealand market, the price gap is significant:
• RX 7900 XTX: \~$1,550 NZD
• RTX 5070 Ti: \~$1,900 NZD
On paper, the 7900 XTX seems like the obvious choice for value.
However, I have concerns regarding AMD’s driver reputation and the lack of hardware support for HEVC 4:2:2 10bit
My Usage:
• Gaming: Primarily racing games/sims (ACC, DiRT, Forza) sometimes in VR. I also play Overwatch and RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3.
• Workload: Significant video editing using a mix of codecs, specifically ProRes RAW and HEVC 4:2:2.
Is the $350 "NVIDIA tax" worth it for the improved encoding support and VR stability, or is the 7900 XTX too good a deal to pass up at this price point?
And finally, when GTA6 hits next year (or whenever it drops) which one will be a better choice?

If you are serious about your editing I would consider the 5070ti but it is a really tough ask from a value perspective. How much is the 9070xt?
AMD drivers don't crash when you look at them wrong anymore but the core experience requiring the end user to jump through more hoops remains the same. You will frequently need to use Optiscaler to bridge gaps in fsr4 implementations. Likewise with stuff like noise suppression randomly being broken for months which again, can be addressed faster with extra hoops.

I didn't realise 9070xt is actually the cheapest coming at around 1450
TokageLife@reddit
Check these relative performance numbers. In some instances the 9070XT keeps pace pretty well and in others it gets gapped pretty hard. Only you can decide whether you want to save more time rendering or a few hundred kiwi bucks up front.

My OC’d 7900 XTX (3150MHz core / 2700MHz mem) straight-up beats my 4080 and the 5070 Ti (which is basically just a 4080 anyway) in VR and benchmarks. Plus, that 24GB of VRAM is a massive win for local AI, which is my main hobby. But... AMD has already left RDNA 3 in the dust. No FSR 4, no Ray Reconstruction—and the kicker is, games are now being tailored for these features with AMD’s own blessing. Even the 9070 is likely on a one-year life support timer. So...

If it's mainly for sim racing I would actually go Nvidia, even if the 7900 XTX is better value. Nvidia cards have historically seen significantly better performance in Sims like ACC. I think that might be the case in Automobilista as well, but I'm not 100% sure.
nvidiot@reddit
AMD drivers are fine.
That said, if you're also doing a lot of video editing and only the GeForce supports the features you need (including GPU acceleration), 5070 Ti would be a better choice despite its higher price. VR also tends to run with less issues with GeForce.
We don't know which card will be better for GTA 6, it's pretty far away and next-gen GPUs will be out by the time game comes out.

My only real gripe is the lack of 10-bit 4:2:2 support; otherwise, they’re pretty much neck-and-neck. It’s also a bit hard to swallow the current price when the 5070 Ti used to sit around $1,500–$1,600 here—the markup definitely leaves a bitter taste.
BeavisTheSixth@reddit
The markup is because Nvidia stopped making the 5070ti.
coolboy856@reddit
Yeah that didn't happen
VTXT@reddit
RTX 5070 Ti ! why? cuz no headakes, no issues, better dlss
Reasonable-Read2717@reddit
Amd is also plug and play, never had any issues. Nvidia also has driver issues by the way, 50 series became notorious for them on release.
AIgoonermaxxing@reddit
AMD's drivers are completely fine. They've arguably even had fewer issues than Nvidia's these past two years.
You'll have to see if your video editing software benefits from CUDA. If it does, then the additional $350 is probably worth the time you'll save on your workloads.
The last thing to consider is the VRAM requirements for sim racing/VR. If you're running extremely high resolutions and think you might be going over 16 GB of VRAM, then the 24 GB on the 7900 XTX will be worth it.

I saw some review saying in Resolve it's actually notbad I pretty much only use resolve
AIgoonermaxxing@reddit
If you're editing very high resolution footage then you also might appreciate the additional VRAM.

Tempt to get the 7900xtx just so I can avoid 12vhpwr.
778899fbi@reddit (OP)
This too
Creative_Ship_6758@reddit
actually when it comes to driver support amd nownis way better than nvidia but both have shit time right now but especially nvidia random blackscreens and updates that ruin your gpu performance completely or just brick it
Beneficial-Ranger238@reddit
I use a 7900xtx in my sim rig. I watched a video comparing it to 9070xt and 5070ti and it was almost always better with triple monitors. I have been pretty happy with it. The only game that punishes it is iRacing, with averages between 80-100 fps. I mainly play ams2 and it’s solidly over 100 with it.
I also play AC, AC rally, wreckfest 2, fh5, Tokyo Xtreme racer, and race room.
kmkm2op@reddit
Lmao, you could get a return flight from auckland to sydney and a 9070xt in sydney cheaper than that 7900xtx price. I feel bad for my nz homies
778899fbi@reddit (OP)
We really getting ripped off here🥲
aminy23@reddit
The encoders are hardware, physical hardware that handles the videos.
AMD has good drivers for gaming, but outside of gaming Nvidia tends to have an edge. AMD driver optimizations is also very short-term, and RX 6000 has already been on the driver chopping block - RX 7000 is next.
Silly_Word8688@reddit
5070 might end up being better
notadroid@reddit
honestly the significant video editing really puts you in the place you need the nvidia chip. I'm all for picking what you want but unfortunately the editing bit has pigeonholed you into nvidia.
Significant_Fill6992@reddit
I don't have any advice about the specific comparison but I absoluitely love my 7900xtx. I play a decent mix of games but ive never tried any racing sims but I have had zero driver issues.
I bought this card in 2023 and it will ideally last me until 2033
