Do you need proof to defer jury duty online.

now is a really bad time for me to go and this is the 3rd time in like 4 years I’ve been called. online there’s excuses for things like Drs appointments, vacation and other things. would I have to send them proof of a Dr appointment if I chose that.
aidkitjr@reddit
I changed mine twice so far and the second time I didn’t know if they’d allow it. I put INJURY as reason and it was approved fairly quick. This was Dallas county
glowshroom12@reddit (OP)
Odd, for me it doesn’t let me input another reason. I have to choose out of the selected ones for deferment. Then it lets you add notes.
I was considering scheduling an actual drs appointment as proof and then selecting Drs appointment and then when they approve my deferral, cancelling the appointment.
aidkitjr@reddit
Nah you don’t need to do all of that. I can’t recall but I guess I put in the notes INJURY. Reading other posts about jury duty it doesn’t seem to be serious. Like some people don’t even go and it’s fine.
NieBer2020@reddit
You do this every time you're asked to do jury duty? Seems like a lot.
AntiqueBasket9903@reddit
I know many dont like jury duty and I didn't like it in the past either. Now that im older I actually like to be chosen for trials. I drew a DUI case last year and it was a very satisfying experience and I believe justice was served. Someone has to do it. It's interesting to me how life's experiences has a way of shaping who we become and how we think.
randomjeepguy157@reddit
I have to take my son to the DMV that day. I scheduled his appointment 6 months ago. What should I do?
bigbugzman@reddit
You never got the letter stating you have jury duty..
thegeoffey@reddit
Last two jury duties I had with Dallas County were cancelled by them - one that morning before we got sworn in and the other the afternoon before so we didn't even have to head downtown
Corgisarethebest123@reddit
Why is it a really bad time for you to go? It’s not convenient for anyone. We do it because its our civic duty.
glowshroom12@reddit (OP)
If I go, I probably can’t pay rent for may.
Corgisarethebest123@reddit
What do you do for work?
glowshroom12@reddit (OP)
Does it matter, not gonna delve further into those details. I’m not trying to get out of it, I just want to defer.
Corgisarethebest123@reddit
I just highly doubt missing a day of work would cause you to not be able to pay your rent.
spookyscaryskeletal@reddit
it's great for that you can't relate. I've been in the same boat before when I worked as a server, some months every shift counts especially if you have an unexpected bill towards the end of the month.
Ice-Teets@reddit
It doesn’t really matter at this point, but if you do go, there are easy disqualifications that would simply exempt you. You’d just have to be there to say why.
Blaz3dnconfuz3d@reddit
☝️Our civic duty 🤓 Most cases don’t even go to trial, hugely outdated system to waste taxpayers time
tlislo@reddit
Hmm. Well maybe the courts should update and adapt to the fact that it's the year 2026.
The process is extremely and unnecessarily disrespectful of potential jurors' time.
You'll be asked to fill out surveys regarding you opinions on the case. For example, I was a potential juror on a case about CSA and had to fill out a survey in the court about my opinions about CSA. The prosecution also required all selected jurors to say "yes" to the nonsense statement that "If a single witness's testimony could conclusively prove a crime, would you vote yes" (nonsense because a single fallible human can never conclusively prove a crime occurred). Finally, the final jury was 100% overweight black or Latina women.
The court took more than 8 hours of my day for no reason. I never had a chance of being on the jury as an intelligent white male.
The court ALREADY sends you a survey to fill out when you're required to attend jury duty. In the year 2026, with modern technology, it'd be trivial for them to also give me the survey about CSA and demographics online. I could've completed that and been disqualified as a juror (because I care about CSA and am not an overweight minority woman) in about 5min. Instead, the court wasted more than 8 hours of my and more than 200 other people's time.
"Respect" and "duty" is a two way street. If courts want to ignore modern technology and abuse people (e.g., making them sit around for 10 hours during jury selection in a case that they were never going to be selected for because the prosecution and defense only want overweight minority women on the jury), then the court no longer deserves respect.
Competitive_Cheek607@reddit
This is not advice, and I’m not suggesting you do this, but I’ve ignored 3 jury duty summons over the years and nothing has happened. I found an older video of the Dallas county sheriff saying they already have way too many warrants for real crimes, they’re not gonna issue warrants for not going to jury duty. If it would be too disruptive to your life it isn’t fair to force you to go
DJ_Idol@reddit
I am also not giving any advice but yep. I’ve never went to a single one and nothing has happened.
Look, for the people who enjoy it or go because it’s the right thing to do, I applaud you. I am not losing out on money, dealing with fucked up Dallas traffic, the overly annoying parking situation and walking to the courthouse for fucking peanuts. Especially not multiple days in a row.
They really should start to make this type of shit worth people’s time if they want to pretend it’s mandatory.
NieBer2020@reddit
I mean, worked paid me to go. Now I don't have to deal with it for 2 years.
Blaz3dnconfuz3d@reddit
Same lol not even on purpose, they got sent to my old address for some reason. Ok one was on purpose but oh well
Low_Item1558@reddit
Last time I went to jury duty it was for a child molestation case and it was super fucked up. Ive ignored every summons since and nothing's ever happened
otidnabotrif@reddit
I've been summoned 5 times and I only went to my most recent summons. The other times I didnt reply or ignore and nothing happened and it wasn't brought up when I went.
anonymousTXn@reddit
Truthfully, nothing happens if you don’t go. I knew a district attorney years ago and he admitted nothing happens. Just like someone else said, it would be ridiculous to use man power to arrest people this when there is a shooting in deep Ellum every week. They know this and put out probably 3x the amount of summons. I do believe in civic duty but not everyone has the ability to take off, even if you just miss half a a day of work - seems like you need the hours.
3Time4Eater3@reddit
I was able to call the court and within 2 minutes we canceled my date
Suspicious-Pea-7481@reddit
You can tell them you're a felon. That's what I did, of course I was honest. I don't know if they double check that stuff.
Funny_Application_22@reddit
There’s usually an option to change the report date to many months in advance. So by the time that date rolls around it’s likely they need you anymore.
glowshroom12@reddit (OP)
That’s what I’m trying to do but it wants me to select a valid excuse. I was considering choosing Drs appointment and then just canceling once it’s accepted.
bionica@reddit
Choose vacation. You have a road trip planned to visit/stay with family. Hard to “prove” that scenario, as it doesn’t require confirmation emails. Don’t over think it.
Zestyclose_Prize377@reddit
i did the reschedule thing few times and it actually works pretty well. they usually give you dates like 6-8 months out and by then half the time they dont even need jurors anymore so you just get released without showing up
glowshroom12@reddit (OP)
When you rescheduled what option did you pick. There’s Dr appointment; vacation, out of town on business and did they ask you to seems like a Drs note?
sl33pl3ssn3ss@reddit
I chose vacation, said I bought tickets, and in a few days I was confirmed deferred.
tlislo@reddit
The process is a disrespectful waste of your time; so just don't go.
The first and only jury summons I responded to, the court wasted 8 hours of my time.
The prosecution insisted all potential jurors answer the nonsense question "If a single witness testimony could inconclusively prove a crime, would you vote to convict" (a single fallible human memory can NEVER inconclusively prove a prime) with "yes."
The final selected jury was literally ALL overweight black or Latina women.
That was a fucking disrespectful waste of my time. With modern technology, the court could've easily sent an online survey to all potential jurors (as they already do) and let the prosecution and defense eliminate everyone who wasn't an overweight minority woman. Because that's what they were going to do anyway. But instead, the court decided to waste several hundred people's full 8-hour day with that bullshit.
Just don't go. Your "civic duty" is to give you peers a fair trial. Your "civic duty" is not to let the courts abuse your time because they refuse to implement easy and obvious solutions (like online screening of jurors).
NomadicAltar@reddit
I was suppose to show up, but I goofed up when I was driving there and missed my exit. I arrived two minutes after they had brought jurors back but before they closed the door, so they still counted it as attendance. I felt so lucky
kmcilro@reddit
No proof needed, they don’t care because you’re just pushing out the date that you serve.
VelociTopher@reddit
Yes, they ask for the note online.
valeriemaycry@reddit
From ny experience, you do not need proof to defer but proof to excuse!
maLcoLm4819@reddit
Just don't go.
