How much are you paying for a haircut nowadays?

Mine is now over £20 with the same barber I've had since a lad which was £10 back in day how much yous paying ?
Namerakable@reddit
I pay £60 for a trim and a tidy up.
Icedtangoblast@reddit
£31
J-Mc1@reddit
Nothing. Bought some clippers during lockdown and haven't been to the barber's since.
DaVirus@reddit
How do you do the back of your head?
J-Mc1@reddit
By running the clippers up from the base of my neck.
P-l-Staker@reddit
Believe it or not, that's still easy to fuck it up.
I wouldn't be surprised if your hair is all uneven back there.
SmashingK@reddit
You have to make a lot of overlapping passes.
If you think it's like harvesting crops on a farm you're gonna mess it up.
J-Mc1@reddit
Mirrors exist - as do other people that can look for you.
AvidCoco@reddit
Do you also struggle to eat soup without drowning yourself?
P-l-Staker@reddit
Yes.
Watchkeys@reddit
Hell of a lot of people cut their own hair mate. It's really not that hard, nor is seeing the back whilst you do it using a 3 way mirror set-up.
PuzzleheadedLow4687@reddit
It's not hard to learn to do it properly. 5 years is certainly enough practice. (I've been doing mine for 10 years)
MrTurleWrangler@reddit
Big if true
Milky_Finger@reddit
He has no object permanence so leaves it long at the back since he can't see it.
ParsleyPractical6579@reddit
Forced to rock the mullet
disasterly213@reddit
This got me, bravo 👏
ihavetakenthebiscuit@reddit
Who cares, he doesn't have to look at the back
Atcoroo@reddit
The answer is "Mullet".
finH1@reddit
Turn around standing in front of a mirror and hold a handheld mirror
Watchkeys@reddit
Not hard to set up a 3 way mirror.
Redditisarsebollocks@reddit
With the clippers.
vertigo90@reddit
I imagine he uses the clippers for that bit too
Jimbobthon@reddit
Same. £30 clippers and I've saved (at the time) £10 a month. Bought them during lockdown
Old-Newspaper125@reddit
Set of half decent rechargable clippers from Lidl cost me £10. Crazy to think they can be manufactured for around half the price of a man's haircut and will probably last a few hundred haircuts
White_hammer82@reddit
Been doing mine for over 10yrs. Quite easy once you know how
Jeremys_Iron_@reddit
Yep. I use clippers and get compliments on my "hair cut". I do nothing speical other than run it over then scissors for round the ears and back.
Save £20 or so, get to use that on a takeout instead.
Alternative-End-518@reddit
Same, almost exactly the same cut and costs me nothing
Anaptyso@reddit
Same.... except I made the switch to clippers in about 2001 when I thought that a tenner was too much to pay! Presumably it's a bit more expensive these days.
MilkMyCats@reddit
My barber was overworked and depressed and told me how to do my hair myself.
Never looked back.
TicksAndBricks@reddit
My boarder charges £25. Used to be £20 but they put their prices up last year.
Pretty much the going rate round my way unless you go to a Turkish Barber (who offer any haircut as long as its a fade judging by the photos they have up) who charge a bit less.
Nathan_DUB_LON@reddit
£10 for a basic short back and sides
GazRD1882@reddit
Found a cracking place recently, 3 mins drive from my work, £10 and a decent cut. Always busy and always 3-4 guys working.
fwmlag@reddit
30 but that's for a beard trim also in Birmingham city centre
GlitteringWarthog297@reddit
Mine £0, clippers over the bath. The wife £250 every 8 weeks.
Clear-Security-Risk@reddit
£16 to my awesome Albanian barber in Reading town centre.
Consult-SR88@reddit
£11 for a ladies cut. It’s a very no frills, walk in only place. They don’t do shampoos or anything beyond a simple cut, sprayed wet. Fine for me because my hair is very short. I’m autistic & I hated the whole, wash & chatter & being treated disparagingly because I don’t really care about my hair beyond it being short, neat & tidy from all other hair places I’d used before.
100_Percent_Dark@reddit
I get around that by having hearing aids. 'Any questions before these come out?' Point at hearing aids, answer questions, take out and get to sit in silence for the cut.
SerendipitousCrow@reddit
Autistic woman here too and I long for a place like that.
I'm not girly at all and feel uncomfortable in posh girly salons. I don't want to talk about my job or your upcoming holidays.
My hair is currently just above my nips and it's way overdue a cut. I normally get it cut to my collarbones/just long enough for a ponytail so it's been a while
Blue-Skies0637@reddit
I feel the same as you. I now have my husband but it into a bob (he just cuts straight along the back) and I do my fringe myself. If you have some good scissors and a friend you would be happy to do this I would recommend it. For me paying £70 to endure small talk, a stranger touching me, and looking at myself in the mirror for an hour was unbearable.
SerendipitousCrow@reddit
I'm glad you found a solution! Yeah it's so uncomfortable, isn't it?
blizeH@reddit
Be careful what you wish for, I had a hairdresser that was just like 😐 the entire time and didn’t speak, my co-worker said “that sounds brilliant, I hate small talk at the hairdresser” but when he came back said it was the most awkward 15 minutes of his life 😅
SerendipitousCrow@reddit
Ha I used to purposely go to a place where a lot of the staff had very poor English and so other than explaining what I wanted, there was little conversation. I'm quite happy sitting with my thoughts for 15-20 minutes
LittleSadRufus@reddit
I used to pay £45 for a frills-based experience but recently found a barber doing it much more quickly and quietly for £14 and I absolutely preferred the experience, cut, and of course the price.
secretlondon@reddit
Boys or girls? £20 for women is impossible
Akash_nu@reddit
I’m convinced that salons that cut hair for women are scammers.
ihavetakenthebiscuit@reddit
Women get their hair cut less frequently then men on average.
Men: once a month @ £18 = £206 per year Women: twice a year @. £120 per visit = £240
Not a massive difference BUT it does depend on the frequency of ones haircuts.
GardenDuck88@reddit
I'm a woman and my hair is cut every 8 to 10 weeks or I end up looking like a yeti. I'd be happy to pay 120 if I only had to go twice a year. But as it is, I have to pay a minimum of £80 every couple of months for a basic cut and dry.
Send_bird_pics@reddit
My partner’s haircuts take 10-15 mins tops. It takes 10 mins just for my stylist to wash my hair! I’m usually there for 3+ hours as I go twice a year for highlights, cut, face framing layers, conditioning treatment and a blow dry.
_Just_Ayano_@reddit
I only pay £25 for a cut and blow dry 🙈
ihavetakenthebiscuit@reddit
How much for just a blow? 😉
_Just_Ayano_@reddit
Cheeky answer 🤣🤣
Zenjeeh@reddit
cheeky, you have taken the biscuit!
PootMcGroot@reddit
Or for a man with hair longer than an inch - £20 is for barber prices and changing a cutter length twice. Men with even slightly longer hair (ie needing scissor skills) are in the £50 region, which is cheap for women still. Locally, a long women's cut starts in the £60s.
CmdrSpaceMonkey@reddit
I pay my barber, who is ace, 20 for my hair and 10 for my beard.
EUskeptik@reddit
I pay my barber, who is exceptionally talented, £0 for my hair. I cut my beard myself, also £0.
I married my exceptionally talented barber (hence £0) but I did have to buy Wahl clippers.
-oo-
CmdrSpaceMonkey@reddit
Do you think they’ll do mine?
P-l-Staker@reddit
Believe it or not, using clippers is a skill that not many people possess.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
As a man with longer hair always needing a scissor cut, I've never paid more than £15.
HipHopRandomer@reddit
As a man who grows his hair out because he hates haircuts, I’ve never paid more than £20 including a few quid as a tip for them spending ages sorting out my barnet!
seven-cents@reddit
£0. Been doing it at home with clippers for over 30 years
mcivor_v2@reddit
Do you ask yourself if you’re going on holiday this year?
ThrowawaySunnyLane@reddit
Do you go to travel agents and ask if they’re gonna have a haircut?
mcivor_v2@reddit
Nope, I stick to asking taxi drivers if they’re busy tonight…
ThrowawaySunnyLane@reddit
Make sure you know what time they’re on til. That small talk will only go so far!
NeoFury84@reddit
The question doesn't apply to you.
TheSpottedD@reddit
Why not chap?
NeoFury84@reddit
Because they don't pay. The question applies to those who pay for a cut.
MinimumCautious3461@reddit
Every thread about haircut is like this. People falling over themselves to say “uuuhhmm well actually I don’t pay anything because I do it myself” - yeah we can tell.
TeenWoolf100@reddit
Reddit is full of the most insufferable people
MinimumCautious3461@reddit
I agree, you and me are different though x
TheSpottedD@reddit
You most definitely are not.
johnnycarrotheid@reddit
Same here 👍
TheSpottedD@reddit
This is the way. Once you get good at it you’ll never have to pay or wait in line again.
nunsreversereverse@reddit
in a queue
opop456@reddit
£15-20.
I get it done like twice a year so it's not exactly costly to do.
sangreblue@reddit
Since lockdown I am using Remington head shaver. So nothing
ThrowawaySunnyLane@reddit
£12 and I will look for the cheapest going. I don’t care about stylists and all that crap.
Psychological_Pay_36@reddit
For my barber I pay £35 for hair cut and beard trim. Hot towel go straight razor on edges. He’s amazing and best in the area
Rh-27@reddit
£15 haircut only. Male.
leffe186@reddit
I think that’s mine too although I’m in suburban North London so I have my pick of about 25 different places within a 5 minute walk. Not even exaggerating. There’s a couple of places I typically go to and IIRC it’s about £15 and I usually just give them a £20 note.
hdhxuxufxufufiffif@reddit
I go to a place that charges £15 for a basic men's cut but as a long-standing customer I'm grandfathered in at £12.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit
Same here as well
JourneyThiefer@reddit
Same
BelguimMalli@reddit
In 1999 my barber put up a sign saying “From 2000 haircuts will be £12-£15 depending on what style you choose.” I went to a local shop, paid £25 for a set of clippers and I still have the same ones. I shave my head every 3 weeks. I’ll let someone else work out my savings.
prettybunbun@reddit
Sure I’ll give a woman’s perspective.
£170 for a gloss, treatment, cut, blow dry and style. Basically makes my hair shiny, makes my hair healthy, cuts any dead ends, makes my hair bouncy and pretty. I go about every 10 weeks.
Lemon-Flower-744@reddit
Mines £90. I'm with my hairdresser for at least 2 hours. That's a cut, hair dye, highlights, blow dry and style.
cine@reddit
Highlights included for £90??
I pay £85 for just cut/dry/style, with a junior stylist.
When I get balayage, it's £490 😭
Lemon-Flower-744@reddit
I'm sure they're called highlights, its deffo not a balayage (that looks amazing btw I wish I had thicker hair to do that😭)...so, my hair is one colour and then she puts in different colours over the top or underneath my hair... atm the highlights are blonde / light brown but my hair is really dark brown, so it gives it that "sun-kissed" look. She suggested it and I was expecting to pay more but she was like nope £90...
She's her own private salon, it's like a lil one at the back of her house? Maybe that's why? It's still got all the salon bits to it like the hair wash basin, mirrors, just me and her for a few hours etc, it's just not in a massive salon where you can't even hear yourself think. Is it possible to find one similar for you?
bloomfa1ry@reddit
I have extra long hair and get a cut, blonde balayage, blowdry and style and it’s 220€. Length and balayage adds a lot. But I also live in Finland so it’s always expensive
Becci92xo@reddit
This is why you dont go 50/50 with a man ladies, our expenses are higher
Opposite_Funny9958@reddit
And makes your bank account empty faster. Yikes! That’s steep.
P-l-Staker@reddit
😱
Potential_Twist3640@reddit
That’s pretty much what mine costs as well, except now I also get my roots dyed because I’m greying (sadly not in a sexy way) and the ends glossed. I get it done every other month, the first Saturday after pay day, and it’s completely worth it to me.
My regular stylist is on mat leave so I’m working with someone a little cheaper currently, but I actually can’t wait to pay more and go back to my regular stylist because she’s faster and talks less! 😅
Agitated_Ad_6774@reddit
£0 clipper trim every days. Cant remember what a barbers seat feels like
Illustrious_Ad_34@reddit
£5 leicester. Was £3.50 before covid
Old-Parfait8194@reddit
I'm Leicester. Where charges a fiver? They must only spend 5 minutes on it to make any kind of money.
BigFloofRabbit@reddit
Probably establishments for whom hair is not their primary income source
bhaskarosrs@reddit
Also pay £5
SightlessFive@reddit
£14 for whole head
£10 back and sides
Used-Flamingo-4320@reddit
£30. If I just get the sides it’s £20
SlowRs@reddit
£12+ tip
Shiny_stuff4ever@reddit
Yesterday I paid £11 which was cheap as in my local area. Gave him a good tip...
OffensiveOcelot@reddit
Nothing, I convinced my then-14 year old son a few years back to get a job at a barbers, he’s now coming up to 19 & fully qualified, has a full book of clients & get mine free.
thecrowsarehere@reddit
£23.50
MCL-Jonathan@reddit
At least £15
RandomUser22487@reddit
£30 for a haircut, it’s £40 if I ask get a beard trim.
Valuable_Chapter_8@reddit
£30 for skin fade and trim
OldUtd@reddit
What do you ask when getting your haircut
Valuable_Chapter_8@reddit
So I get a low skin fade, my beards faded in, lined up etc. and my barber knows the rest.
My hairs weird cause thinning on the top half but fine on the back/sides so need scissor work once a month so I don’t look like wolverine lol
antonylockhart@reddit
We pay the same for almost the same cut, with similar timing and reasonings. Are we haircut twins? Could we make money from that
OriginalMandem@reddit
same, annoying. But not so annoying imma get doll hair implants or use stuff that costs loads and has really nasty list of frequently reported side effects annoying.
DoIKnowYouHuman@reddit
Bold of you to assume the conversation extends beyond ‘usual’ and ‘yep’
Indiana_harris@reddit
Paid £40 when I had long hair as I went to professional barbers that did longer men’s hair.
Now that I’ve shaved it and just started letting it out again I’ve just been buzzing it at home
Outrageous_Shake2926@reddit
Nothing. In 2010 I developed alopecia.
Spottyjamie@reddit
Tenner if i go to the barber near my estate 4 miles from town
Closer to £12-15 if i go to one in town
Southern-Tune2196@reddit
£9.50 with eyebrow trim, used the same barber for more than ten years. Livingston, UK.
HollowMatryoshka@reddit
£20 is an absolute steal. Mine are getting dangerously close to £100 now…
crispycat40@reddit
This is the normal sort of fee, and the men commenting have no idea.
This is why I started hacking my own hair (not as in ‘this is a tip’ but actually hacking… like with shears) because I’m not spending 2 hours of my life making awkward conversation and then paying close to £100 for the honour
MaxMouseOCX@reddit
But isn't cutting and styling your hair WAY more complex than mine?
MCR1996Hola@reddit (OP)
You what??? Get a new barber mate 😅
HollowMatryoshka@reddit
This is a women’s haircut at a hairdressers, so I would assume there is a markup compared to a barber
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit
learning about the pink tax when i started taking better care of my hair and growing it out damn near radicalised me. A skinfade being £15-£20 while a maintenance cut is £50+ is absolutely insane.
unaubisque@reddit
That's not really the 'pink tax'. It's paying more for contracting more time consuming and skilled work.
MCR1996Hola@reddit (OP)
Oh okay sorry but £100 is still abit much
Nandor1262@reddit
I know a girl who used to spend £500 on her hair when she went to the salon. I think it just a completely different world compared to men’s hair
OriginalMandem@reddit
back in the 90s I knew a hair dresser to the celebrities based out of Portobello who used to factor 'free' lines of charlie for the customers into the price of the overall hair work.
Aylez@reddit
🤣🤣🤣
HollowMatryoshka@reddit
Perhaps I just have complicated hair 😭
wwrd77@reddit
Are you getting a haircut for 6 Hours?
HollowMatryoshka@reddit
Thankfully it is shorter than that... The place that I go is comfortable though, including drinks and treatments and the like, so I would assume that is part of the price, along with the expertise
wwrd77@reddit
My guy would have to crack out the good whisky and cigars to get more than 20 out of me for a haircut
OriginalMandem@reddit
Another 20 quid and we're in happy ending territory. Allegedly.
weregonnamakit@reddit
Or perhaps very naive
UrMomDotCom666@reddit
that's a normal price for women's hair
leylaley76@reddit
When I was a trainee hairdresser back in 1995 the cost of a haircut for a boy was £4 and gents was £6

Can we stop posting the same shit every 2 weeks? Look up the previous answers. Inflation isn’t that much to change it in 2 weeks. Every 2 weeks.

Stopped paying during Covid and just do it at home so 0

Zero.

AnimalNo3465@reddit
£22 for a skin fade
crypticshoebill@reddit
£13 for a meticulous job in the West Midlands.
My barber of 5ish years had slowly gone up to £22, I walked in to the local on a whim one day, no prices on the wall or anything.
Got to the till at the end and nearly recoiled when he said £13. I actually felt guilty he'd done such a good job.
NullandVoidUsername@reddit
If I just want the standard number one all over, nothing because I'll do myself. If I'm feeling fancy I want a skin fade either £12/£15 (Sometimes the owner charges me less than what's in the price list).
South Yorkshire for info.
the01li3@reddit

£17 for a men's quick cut
Used to have a regular hairdresser, she started charging something like £10 years ago. It slowly kept rising, which is fine as I get prices rise. Then she got rid of the salon and went mobile as
Prices kept going up, and while she wasn't extortionate (£18 I think in the end) I wasn't really a fan of how chatty and nosey she was. I just wanted a haircut, not an hour long experience
Found a local place near work, price listed was £22. Didn't really know what I wanted since I'd not been to a barbers in years. The guy was overly rough, took half an hour and charged me £25. Ended up finding a local place near home, went in, asked for a quick tidy up and paid £17. New barber found

It's getting ridiculous now. I was going to a barber I really liked and trusted with my hair... Well the first time I went ...£17 which I thought was amazing so I tipped him ... Requested him the next time..£19? and then when I requested him again it went up. Almost like he felt he could trap me because I had told him how much I trusted his cuts. Well it kept happening and at first I would make jokey comments when it came time to pay...Now? I go elsewhere for £20 every 2 weeks instead of being ripped off because I admitted reliance. He kept texting saying he had slots available and finally last week I sent him a message back saying I didn't appreciate the constant price hikes just for a freshen up and wouldn't be coming back. His response.....I can give you a flat rate of £26 every time if you want?!?! The last cut I got from him was £25 🤣
DevilishlyHandsome63@reddit

Its called inflation.
I never used to really buy it, I assumed most places just fired prices up every year even if they didnt need too.
Then a few weeks ago I seen a post on here from some cafe owner saying he didnt know what to do with the increase in minimum wage the goverment are implememting this year. He had something like 6-8 employees and the extra 50p per hour was going to cost him 8 grand.
I was skeptical so done the back of thr fag packet maths and it worked out roughly that.
All the advice he got was, yip raise prices.
And so the cycle continues.

I go to a Turkish barber (the guys are Turkish). The guy I usually get doesn't speak much English and seems to be very nonchalant about the whole thing. He does take pride in his work - he won't move on until he's happy with his work.

30 quid for a woman in Scotland. It's just a trim and blow dry, occasionally I will get free party curls or tinsel as I've been going there for decades now. Less than £10, although I always give £10 and say "keep the change". A one man operation in a small town in Scotland. Sometimes I get it cut at a place I have used for years in East Anglia if I am in the area and that is now £12.
No way am I going to pay the prices barbers in large cities seem to want.

blu3teeth@reddit
Paid £18 for about 8 years at my local until they got forced out by their landlord.
New place started at 30 which I thought was okay, but now 39 which I'm beginning to think is a bit steep.
On the plus side, I don't have to tell them anything, they always do a great job, and my wife thinks so too.

25 for a skin fade and beard trim
RecognitionWestern86@reddit
Woman, £40 with tip. No wash or blow dry. I live in a fairly posh area so it’s £60-80 in our local salons.
The downside is that I have to go to his house. It takes him an hour to cut my shortish hair, of which about 10 minutes is actually cutting, and he has no boundaries. Recent topics include his 80 year old client who apparently is really into S&M, sexual abuse and mental illness in his extended family and graphic details of the gay sex scene in the 1990s.
I save £30 at the cost of feeling fucking exhausted by the time I’ve survived an hour of chat.
RopeyStingray91@reddit
Nothing.
After a few interesting lockdown hair cuts my other really got the hang of trimming me up.
Before that I’d seen the same barber for 10 years or so, lovely bloke used to cut my hair 👌. I was paying £14 or so every 2 weeks.
I stuck my head in the window the other day, £24! Not a chance I’d ever pay that sort of money.

As a man I booked in at a salon the other day because it appears all barbers can do these days is fades.
I opted for the lowest level employee, the day came and she cut my hair then I was presented with a bill of £65.

Fraggle_ninja@reddit
Used to be around £40 for a cut and blow dry (women’s). It’s now min £55 for the cut, which they won’t do dry and it’s £10 for the blow dry. Which is mad, because if you don’t get the blow dry - you leave with wet hair and can’t check the cut. Started trimming at home now.

matmah@reddit
When it hit £20 I stopped going on a regular basis. I now only go about once every three months and try to find the cheapest in the area. In between cuts, I use lightweight clippers to reshape it. Big heavy clippers can be a bit too agressive for an inbetween self trim.
I have no regular barber any more, and will go to whoever is cheapest in the area.
Underwritingking@reddit
Nothing. Just run my beard trimmer with a number 1 guard over the lot and ask my wife to check it afterwards. Been doing it for years
Trick_Contact_8408@reddit
33 for mens, i dont trust getting turked anymore so i skip the gamble and get a great haircut everytime instead. I dont think its too bad when i consider how long i go between cuts.

Have been buzz-cutting my own balding head for 15 years, so only the price of charging and/or buying new clippers (once in a while. Prior to that it was £10 for a can-you-fit-me-in bench wait on a Saturday for a short-back-and sides.
The barbers often had interesting porn mags, though...

Last I checked sub £10 but I just let my partner trim my split ends now and that's about it. Low maintenance long hair here.

About £35 usually. This is a women's cut but I don't get any extra treatments and I colour it myself. To treat myself I go to a different salon that's like £50-70ish, but that's maybe once every few years. I don't look after my hair anywhere near as much as I'm supposed to but I don't believe that I NEED to spend £300 every 2 months

I do my own (ever since Covid). I think that means that I now have to gripe that I'm doing "unpaid work" to the value of a professional stylist.
Crisps33@reddit
What sort of style? Is it a buzz cut or something more complicated like a fade?
PracticeNo8733@reddit
Oh, really simple. Just using clippers with three fixed-length guards: 4 on top, 2 on the back and sides, some 3 to merge them together and some trimming without a guard.

Nothing, cut it myself

£50 at my last visit for a wash, blow dry and cut. Felt it was heavily overpriced for the service I received (no heat protectant when drying + uneven cut).

£27 which is a bit extreme for the simple cut I get but I've always been a bit funny when it comes to barbers and don't mind paying it when I know I'm gonna get exactly what I want.

there's an elite barbers in central manchester that does trims for £15. I live in central cheshire but it was worth getting the train up for the day for the cut.
I've decided to grow my hair out then donate it and shave bald at the end of the year, but it's getting to a point where its starting to look really goofy (my last cut was in october) so i've been looking into maintenance cuts at womens salons... they don't come cheap :/
