Is August and September typically the hottest months like in California near you?

kjb76@reddit
I think in my part of NY it’s July and early part of August.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
I don't live there now but it can be positively cool in September in Minnesota.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Anytime between Labor Day and Memorial Day is fair game for frost and even snow in Minnesota.
The only month that has never seen temps below freezing is July.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
I went to my high school reunion a couple years ago, which I believe was in August, and when I got there (I'm in a different state now much further south) there was an outdoor dinner scheduled at a restaurant on their patio. They had those gas-powered outdoor heaters turned on because it was that cold. The people who live there said it had been 90° the week before.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Lol that sounds about right.
I remember in my Junior year of college, I walked across campus during finals week in early May and it was 29F with a foot of snow on the ground, and the next week I was out fishing with my grandpa with my shirt off and it was 93F.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
Yeah, you never know.
This also proves the point that just because it's Minnesota doesn't mean it doesn't get hot also. There's a reputation outside of Minnesota that it's always cold there but it can get both. I remember a day it was 105° (40.5° C) in my neighborhood one summer when I was growing up there.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Just a few years ago there was a day where it was 104F (40C) with a heat index of 121F (49.5C).
ericbythebay@reddit
What do you mean, by like in California? California has 16 distinct climate zones.
San Francisco’s hottest months are September and October, for example. Death Valley’s hottest month is July.
Illustrious-Shirt569@reddit
And it’s snowy year-round in a lot of California mountains.
Nawoitsol@reddit
“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco” apocryphal quote attributed to Mark Twain
Kaurifish@reddit
But he was talking about Paris. He praised the climate of SF to the skies.
Nawoitsol@reddit
More accurately he quoted someone else about Paris.
The point is people often use the apocryphal quote because they agree with the sentiment.
moose098@reddit
The late-summer/fall heat is only the lower 2/3 of the California coast.
GreatRecipeCollctr29@reddit
June to August are the hottest months in the Bay Area. El.Nino can happen on February or March too.
LostExile7555@reddit
June and first half of July feel like you're standing in an oven. It's an intense, dry heat.
The second half of July and August feel like the air is melting. It's hot and miserably humid.
JefeRex@reddit
I was very surprised when my sister moved to Phoenix when I visited in late summer and felt the humidity. I don’t think anywhere in the California desert has that weird humid season, all summer it is the same dry oven.
moose098@reddit
They do during pulses of monsoonal moisture, it just happens less often in the CA desert.
JefeRex@reddit
I hope to not suffer through any monsoon pulses when I am planning trips to Palm Springs in the future :-)
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Palm Springs doesn't get near the monsoon moisture Arizona does. The Sonoran Desert is "wet" as far as deserts go. Tucson averages nearly 3x the annual rainfall that Palm Springs sees.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
For Arizona, it's June.
For the upper Midwest, it's July
ThrowAwayIGotHack3d@reddit
July/August in northeastern PA? September starts cooling down a bit and goes into the 80's and 90's.
LastCookie3448@reddit
Yes. July gets bad in Southern CA but August and September tend to be worse.
pizzaanarchy@reddit
We have Jan-Feb, call it winter, and summer. Oh yeah, spring is usually a Tuesday in April, and fall is a Friday near the end of October.
moonsicklovelight@reddit
usually july here
Hillbillygeek1981@reddit
In Tennessee the weather just throws darts at a thermometer.
65 degrees most of August? Sure.
Snow in September? Why not?
75 and sunny on Christmas and a blizzard for Easter? The chances are low but never zero.
110 in July then rain the entire rest of the summer followed by record breaking lows in October and almost 80 on Thanksgiving? Fuck around and find out.
Signal_Transition664@reddit
Alabama nods in agreement.
Lilylake_55@reddit
In my area the hottest months are July through September. Though in recent years June has been getting pretty hot as well. The rest of the year is mid70s - high 80s. Well, except December, when it can hit the high 60s-low 70s. And February when, if we’re lucky, we might get about 3 weeks of winter. But in recent years “winter” has consisted of 3-5 heavier rainstorms and several days of drizzle.
drgn2009@reddit
Its usually July and Aug for the average temp, but we can still be quite hot into September on some years.
False-Cookie3379@reddit
Sometimes we get that last summer heat wave in September.
shessocold1969@reddit
On the coast it’s September and most of October.
JasminJaded@reddit
Probably, but the tradeoff is that the nights cool down quite a bit.
jiminak@reddit
I don’t know. I don’t have a California near me.
Important_Canary6766@reddit
South central PA is the worst from mid-June into early September. Hot and humid!
spencer_hood@reddit
From like July 15th-September 15th here in SE TN
Gremlin1001001@reddit
Don’t leave July out. That one’s hot too!
Sooner70@reddit
Hmmm… I live in California and I would never consider September one of the hottest months. That would be July/August.
MyUsername2459@reddit
More like July and August around here as the hottest months.
bernie_manziel@reddit
it’s the same in PA, but I feel like it’s dragging on more into September the past 10 years or so.
nerdymom27@reddit
Even into October as well a lot of the time now
bmbmwmfm@reddit
Same in AR. Oppressive with the 98% humidity.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
That's different than California! What!!
bmbmwmfm@reddit
I've lived in CA , much prefer Mojave Desert heat and humidity compared to this. Wish id stayed.
Fred42096@reddit
First time I went out in the desert, maybe 4 years ago, my now-wife and I stepped out of the car. It was 103F that day, and we looked at each other and said, “what does it feel like to you? Maybe 85 degrees?” Lol.
I’m more used to 110F+ with 80%+ humidity for weeks on end… actual hell. Would rather shovel snow every day for the rest of my life.
Saltpork545@reddit
The parts of the country that get a lot of rainfall and grow a lot of plant life have a fucking ton of humidity when summer comes around.
I live in SW Indiana in the Ohio River Valley and grew up in the Ozarks. 70-90% humidity is normal in summer.
Ever heard of corn sweat? Corn release massive amounts of moisture into the air, raising the humidity and making everything feel hotter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEGH1jpZ5XU
ABelleWriter@reddit
Yup, same in SE Virginia.
LinuxLinus@reddit
That's actually true in California, as well, if you look up the data.
DogsBikesAndMovies@reddit
It's definitely hottest in July and August anywhere on the Best Coast.
bugga2024@reddit
I'd say same, September can be bad too, but normally by mid to late September it's starting to cool down a bit.
SavannahInChicago@reddit
July and August in the midwest
NPHighview@reddit
Here in southern California, September can be much hotter than August, and surprisingly, we get another blast of heat in December.
Sea-Bill78@reddit
July & August for sure
Former-Fig-9686@reddit
California is unusual. In most of the U.S. east of California, July and August are the hottest months.
biggcb@reddit
July and August
gardenofthought@reddit
July-September are the hottest in central Texas
qu33nof5pad35@reddit
Yes
LinuxLinus@reddit
July is hotter than September in most of California.
CaptainPunisher@reddit
Bakersfield here. Can confirm. June and July are baking season.
DrBlankslate@reddit
July and August are the worst. September's still pretty bad, but in most years things cool off by the end of September.
WafflePeak@reddit
I grew up in San Diego, August to october was the hottest part of the year.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
No, it's often getting colder in September again.
July and August
Top-Web3806@reddit
July and August in every state (5 states, 3 regions of the U.S.) I’ve lived in
S2Sallie@reddit
Not where I am in PA. My daughter bday is 8/21. We had a pool party for her one year & it wasn’t hot enough to swim. I’d say July & first half of August
kellylikescats@reddit
It varies within California too. Most people in the Bay Area consider the hottest months to be September-October
LinuxLinus@reddit
This is not accurate. That might be true in San Francisco, but in San Jose the hottest months are July and August, like in most parts of the northern hemisphere. In Oakland it's August and September.
LinuxLinus@reddit
Yeah, you edited your comment from “bay area” to “San Francisco” so as to seem less wrong, which seems like a lot of effort. But then I made this comment, so.
tujelj@reddit
In Oakland, there's not really much of a difference in temperature from June to October. Average highs over those months are 69, 70, 70, 72, and 70. Average temperatures are 61, 62, 62, and 63. Source
kellylikescats@reddit
Fair enough. My point stands that it varies within California.
OptatusCleary@reddit
In Fresno I would say July and August are the hottest. June and September are hot as well, but they’re more likely to have the occasional comfortable day.
bsmithi@reddit
in the northern hemisphere, yeah?
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
San Diego. May, June, and some of July are almost cold. August is very warm, September and early October can be hot. Those 3 months are prime fire season. End of October it often starts getting chilly. By chilly i mean 60s. Typically November and December each have a nice warm week of 70s or low 80s, but the rest of the time are chilly. Sept and oct are when the Santana winds hit. Strong winds blowing in over the mountains from the desert. Humidity before 20. After months of no rain a lawnmower hitting a rock can start wildfires.
Lovemybee@reddit
June and July here in Phoenix, Arizona.
NoContextCarl@reddit
California climate varies a lot by region, but here in the southeast it's typically July and August but at least 6 months of the year are pretty dang warm.
IHSV1855@reddit
July and August more so
ITrCool@reddit
mmmmm, more like July/August for my area. September can be kinda toasty, but not as much towards the end of the month. October is where the warm weather starts really winding down for us.
Zillajami-Fnaffan2@reddit
June and July here i believe
ZamHalen3@reddit
That is the case in Texas though the heat records I've experienced in my specific location happened in June and July.
Nawoitsol@reddit
Yeah, summer is May to November. I think our records are July, August, or September, but we’ve had summers with 75 100-degree days.
holymacaroley@reddit
July and August here
ShesGotaChicken2Ride@reddit
Where I live, it’s July and August, but September is pretty hot and nowadays it’s pretty hot during the day at least halfway through October, but will cool off in the evening.
cmiller4642@reddit
In western WV on the Ohio border 4th of July to Labor Day is the hottest and most humid time of the year
moonchic333@reddit
Yes, all of America and the western hemisphere experiences summer at the same time.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Where I grew up in Northern WV, it usually started to cool off by mid September. July and August are unquestionably the hottest.
Where I live now in VA, unfortunately Summer runs from early May well into October, but I'd still say July and August are the hottest. October here is much hotter usually than Septembers that I grew up with.
madmoore95@reddit
Late July, early August tends to be the hottest (97-105)in the eastern panhandle of WV.
Forward_Tank8310@reddit
September is still hit and humid in southwest Florida.
Densolo44@reddit
October is fire season in Southern California
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
We call it local summer when I’m from :). It’s not typical for most of the country.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
You mean Santa Anna's?
LopsidedGrapefruit11@reddit
Yep
Vachic09@reddit
July and August
JtotheC23@reddit
For sure August in Illinois, but I'm not 100% for July vs September. July temps may be higher, but humidity gets really bad starting in August and extends into September, so I've found it feels worse.
Never underestimate the humidity from corn sweat in the Midwest. It can get to the level of the southern states with pure heat and humidity. The difference is that it's a lot more temporary for us.
Gloomy-Ask-9437@reddit
Usually July and August are the hottest, but it's pretty hot from early-May to late-September
HermioneMarch@reddit
Here in the South it’s usually July and August that make us want to crawl up under a rock and die. My favorite time of year is that first cool autumn morning that breaks the heat.
SaltandLillacs@reddit
July and August.
September can cool off real fast
musical_dragon_cat@reddit
July and August for me, but we usually do get heat waves Sept-Oct, at least 2 or 3. Then, by Halloween, we get a cold snap.
Patient-Ad-7939@reddit
June is where it starts getting hot hot, July and August are pretty miserable, then September is cooling down. So September can have hot days, but it can also have really toned down days. June and September are maybe comparable here. October is just a mess. Halloween will either be 90°, or 40°, never a nice temp.
ThePickleConnoisseur@reddit
I’d say July is hotter. Those months are windier
she-dont-use-jellyyy@reddit
I live on the opposite coast, but in a hot climate. June through September is sweltering, but it's humid here. From what I gather, California is generally not so humid.
DryEyeKitty@reddit
The hottest month here and in most places is July. Seasonal lag past the solstices and equinoxes is around 3 weeks or so.
Peak Summer by sun angle: June solstice Peak Summer by heat: Early July
EloquentRacer92@reddit
Just checked climate data for my town and July and August are equally the hottest months with the same average hottest temperature, except August has a average lowest temperature of one degree more. However I live 10 minutes south of town and it's 10 degrees cooler where I live.
QV79Y@reddit
It's September and October in San Francisco where I live, not August.
This year, though, we broke records in March.
nakedonmygoat@reddit
In Houston, August and September are usually the hottest and it's also peak hurricane season for our area. June and July are also pretty damn hot and the heat from September usually doesn't diminish by much until Halloween.
I would posit that most of the Gulf Coast is similar.
DropTopEWop@reddit
August is scorching
78723@reddit
June, July, August, September are all the-sun-is-trying-to-kill-you months. They’re hard to tell apart. April, May, October, November are unpleasantly, sometimes sweltering, hot.
Laylasita@reddit
Florida here. July August September. It was 90⁰ at the beginning of April so there's that.
nsbsalt@reddit
August is so brutal, I think about moving every summer.
PinchedTazerZ0@reddit
I'm in SW Florida and its been a little toasty for sure -- I'm about to leave for a seasonal job in the PNW where its been dropping to the high 30s at night lol. I think I'll need a bit of adjustment period
JosephBlowsephThe3rd@reddit
June, July & August are the hottest, though September can be a bitch (it varies year to year how hot or not September will be). When September is mild here, it's better than springtime: warm air, cool breezes, and NO dense clouds of pollen.
OPsDearOldMother@reddit
For New Mexico it's generally June and early July that are the hottest. Late July and August we typically get brief rain showers that cool things down in the afternoons.
Fire season here is late Spring and early Summer vs late Summer for most of the rest of the West.
dangleicious13@reddit
May-early October usually sucks pretty hard.
lithomangcc@reddit
July is hottest most everywhere except the Pacific coast. There is cold current that eases up later in the summer. The mountains block the cooling winds of the Pacific.
devilscabinet@reddit
August tends to be the hottest, but uncomfortable summer heat can easily last 6 months here.
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
July and August is usually in the triple digits in central Texas and humidity is high so going outside is risky because you can get heatstroke pretty quickly, even if you drink plenty of water.
manicpixidreamgirl04@reddit
July and August
Imaginary_Ladder_917@reddit
No. I grew up in Southern California and know the heat of August and September there. In Illinois it’s starting to be less hot by mid August, and September is probably the nicest month with warm weather that isn’t too hot or humid.
bibliophile222@reddit
July is the hottest in VT. August starts off hot, but later in the month, some cool evenings start popping up here and there, and near the end of the month, there might be a few days that dip into the 60s. September is usually gorgeous here, lots of 75° days with cooler evenings.
Zealousideal_Cod5214@reddit
July and August are typically the hottest for me. September can reach those levels, but it's a lot less common.
garbageman2112@reddit
Look it up. There are data. You don't need humans for this question.
jessek@reddit
July and August for Colorado. Especially the transition between months.
malibuklw@reddit
I’d say July and august, September can be equally hot or not hot at all (well not as much as when I was growing up, but I suppose it could happen again)
Glad_Researcher9096@reddit
In Charleston, SC ... YES! def the hottest months.
