20th June 2025: Chancellor Friedrich Merz this week praised the Israeli military for doing the “dirty work” of attacking Iran
2nd March 2026: Merz: Iran should not be protected by international law
This guy is a duplicitous scumbag. Swaying with the wind and saying very dangerous things at times.
CronoDroid@reddit
That's the essence of political liberalism in the first world countries when it comes to Imperialism. As long as it's conducted effectively, by a mildly charismatic or likeable leader, and the domestic population doesn't suffer any consequences, most people are all for it. The invasion of Iraq was very well publically supported in the early years, and so was the Vietnam War. Obliterating Iraq's extremely incompetent military in the Gulf War and then using Shock and Awe back in 2003, plastering it on TV was easy and popular.
After twenty years of US military capabilities being hollowed out by greed and a severe recruitment crisis, they finally started something with a country that could hit back, and hard. The European "powers" can't do anything either, or they'd be there to help deal with Iran. It's good, but it is also dangerous as you say. Because exposing the weakness of Western imperialism like this will invite more challengers.
name20948234@reddit
Liberalism? Merz is in the CDU. A conservative christian party.
CronoDroid@reddit
That is a form of political Liberalism. In Germany they would call it "freiheitliche demokratische Grundordnung." Every major party follows Liberalism, which is the ideology of capitalism. Another term for it is bourgeois politics.
name20948234@reddit
Didn't know that. Thanks for the explanation.
Turkey-Scientist@reddit
Yes, and this is also the first time America has fought an industrialized country since, well, I don’t even know. Decades.
(This is also the first time that many Americans reading my comment are even learning that Iran is an industialized country. Some moron might even try to argue the point)
Bolaumius@reddit
It was fine when it was only people in the middle east dying. Now that it's affecting his country he has to be against it. Yup, this guy is a massive PoS.
NearABE@reddit
Fine when people in the middle east were dying. Now it affects driving a BMW on the autobahn.

Oil prices increasing doesn't only affect the use of ICE vehicles dude.
Turkey-Scientist@reddit
Nobody said it did
NorthernerWuwu@reddit
It's mostly that the end game desired by Israel and America of Iran as a failed state similar to Syria and Lebanon will hit Germany with refugees. A little of that is good for European right wing parties but too much is not.
Sacaron_R3@reddit
A lot of refugees would boost parties like the AFD. The AFD in turn is heavily boosted by Trump, Musk, Bannon and Putin, because all of them hate the EU with a passion.
The continued support for american jingoism by the likes of Merz will only serve to weaken the EU further. Their Behaviour is by now so very much ingrained that I think a lot of these politicians are completely compromised.
Professional-Syrup-0@reddit
There is zero swaying going on, Merz still won’t oppose the US/Israel, he still won’t deny the US the use of bases in Germany/airspace.
The American puppet can’t even say this war is illegal/wrong because it’s allegedly “not our place to lecture partners”.
That’s the sole reason why this statement about the war being “unnecessary” is allegedly so reported-worthy; That’s the sarpedt critique Merz has offered so far of the US/Israeli war against Iran.
LeGrandLucifer@reddit
False equivalence. Back in 2025, Iran had been firing missiles at Israel.
aykcak@reddit
Everyone needs to remember that a lot of our European leaders are just as double dealing two faced scumbags as the U.S. leaders are. It is just that Trump makes it so much more obvious and often reveling in it's blatancy . It is almost a good thing, honestly.
BendicantMias@reddit
Well there's a reason he's the least popular govt. head in the world - https://www.euronews.com/2026/04/13/german-chancellor-merz-the-most-unpopular-head-of-government-in-the-world-survey-shows

First chancellor in history who wasn't voted in the first round. Even his party hats him. Sadly not enough to not vote for him at all...

Plus, just couple weeks ago, didn't he just sit and nod like a good little lapdog right next to the orange clown while he had a 20 minute tantrum against Pedro Sanchez?

Yes lol, just an absolute worm

Israel-US-Iran war, thank you.
Not sure why one of the key belligerents in this seems to fail to be mentioned in headlines so often. They started it, USA is involved.
ElSunBloc@reddit
Remember when Hezbollah murdered Rafik Hariri because he was concerned of their growing influence in Lebanon?

NearABE@reddit
Your linked article says Hezbollah and Syria were exonerated in the trial.
I do not know enough about it to comment either way. Just read your post and then read the article. Either you or that journalist is wrong.
ElSunBloc@reddit
It said the leadership was exonerated due to insufficient evidences, but all suspects were linked to hezbollah and Salim Ayyash, a member of hezbollah, was convicted
Heres 2 more hezbollah members convicted

NearABE@reddit
Your flair says Canada. That is next to USA. You must have been involved what happened to JD Vance’s couch. No need to be ashamed of yourself, these things happen.
That said, I think this is relevant to neither USA bombing Iran nor to Germany’s prime minister.
ElSunBloc@reddit
well your knowledge is geopolitics is left wanting.
iran funds hezbollah, which is one of the reasons for the war.
if you were paying attention, the US is asking the Iranians to A. stop enriching uranium and B. to stop funding proxies in the region.
my comment was to highlight the fact that Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, is a threat to both Lebanon, and Israel, and therefore the US and Israel are justified in attacking Iran (particularly Israel).
thank you for your attention to this matter.
dood9123@reddit
Israel (an American proxy) has attacked Iran. Israel is a nuclear power.
Therefore Iran is justified in defending itself by acquiring nukes.
See the issue?
ElSunBloc@reddit
You don’t get it. It doesn’t really matter what Iran thinks it’s justified to do.
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
But what Israel thinks is justified is of paramount importance? Please. Stop covering for the genocidal ethnostate.
ElSunBloc@reddit
Consider the fact that the iran-china-russia axis is actively undermining the interests of the west and admittedly the west is actively undermining the interests of the iran-china-russia axis, it would nonetheless be strange to be a westerner and support the iran-china-russia axis.
Professional-Syrup-0@reddit
Making up more imaginary axis again, how very creative..
dood9123@reddit
We are not our power structures. Living in a "western" nation while not supporting unjust wars is not a contradiction.
I don't support the Iranian government but I do support their ability to create means to defend themselves as any other rational state actor might do.
as citizens of democratic nations it is our privilege and duty to disagre with our governments when they act in bad faith, not to blindly fall for their attempts at manufacturing our reality.
fifthflag@reddit
Iran-China-Russia vs Israel-Epstein-US axis, the new reddit cold war and this time only 1 side is morally bankrupt to the core.
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
Failing to support the genocidal ethnostate is not supporting the Iran-China-Russia axis, is it even exists. Supporting international law and human rights isn’t a commie or Islamist plot.
sxnmc@reddit
i'm not even definitively saying it wasn't hezbollah, but that's obviously not conclusive evidence
SpontaneousFlame@reddit
I hat does that have to do with anything? And everyone knows Israel hated Hariri. Anything that brings stability to Lebanon is opposed by Israel.
Distracted_Unicorn@reddit
No shit Sherlock.
Guy is 2 weeks behind the rest of the nation and 2 centuries behind what the nation needs.

And still keeps sending whatever the zionazis are asking for. This is like last time when they announced a stop of arms to the jewish settlers and all they did was not offering new contracts to stuff produced in gaza/jordan...
We are the country of bootlicking and bound to be on the wrong side of history.
