How often do you read a book?

I’m genuinely curious, and I kindly request honesty. I’ve been extremely stressed recently, so I haven’t read any books in about a year.
mogrim@reddit
Hmm
Margotkittie@reddit
I read too much, to the detriment of everything else in my life tbh. My house could fall down around my ears and...just one more chapter. I thankfully am okay re-reading books, or I could afford to keep up with my habit. New books last about 2-3 days, re-reads a day or 2. I switched to a Kindle about 13 years ago, and am on my 5th. I ran out of room for books in the house.
It's not a boast. It's a real problem. I need to get off my arse and do stuff.
shortandscruffy@reddit
Every day.
Soggy_Detective_4737@reddit
Every night, at bedtime. I only get through two or 3 a week now, but it's just nice to switch off.
tsmiv12@reddit
Every day.
MrD-88@reddit
I'm currently halfway through one, with 5 queued up behind it. I'm a terribly slow reader lol
Familiar-Donut1986@reddit
I both read physical books and listen to audiobooks. Combining the two I've read over 50 books so far this year.
ACharredCell@reddit
The number of books I get through seems to be a kind of barometer for my mental health. Always been a keen reader but last year went through a really rough patch, lost the ability to concentrate on anything except the futility of existence/my own failings and so didn't read a single book for several months -- possibly the most alarming of all my symptoms, not sure why the doctor didn't take that one seriously 😂
Aside from that, at the moment it's anywhere between 1 and 4 per month depending on how busy I am and how hefty the books are. I'm also a PhD student so there are times when I end up reading academic papers in bed rather than books... 😬
BuGMoiDroit@reddit
I read daily to help me sleep. Doesn't usually work, but it helps me feel less shit and gives some form of mental respite.
amyzophie@reddit
Same, reading > scrolling has helped me fall asleep much easier
mittenshape@reddit
I tried that last week and stayed up all night finishing the book!
rosiewi@reddit
Sign of a great book
RubADubDubILuvGrub@reddit
I think a good book is the best escapism ever
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
Right now, every day, I'm an avid reader who lives and breathes my Kindle tbh,
I do go through phases, though, where I'll read constantly over three months and then not pick up a book for two.
ShoePillow@reddit
2 books a week? Do you remember what the books are about or forget it when you move to the next one?
And I suppose they are fiction?
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
Strangely enough depends on the type of book; yes, they're all fiction. After reading, I do remember what I've read. I can probably count on 1 hand how many books have had me sitting there and ruminating on them for three days, but it does happen. Other than that, I won't jump straight into the next book, unless it's a series. I tend to finish all of my books in bed, so i finish reading that book, and go to sleep and start the next the following night.
ImaginaryParrot@reddit
Bit of a daft question but has this affected your posture?
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
From using a kindle? Honestly can't say it has, but also can't say I have amazing posture as it is, it's really no different than where I hold my phone. I tend to read before bed most of the time anyway, so I'm lying down.
Turbulent_Echo4014@reddit
Out of interest how much time do you spend per day readying?
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
It can vary. I get into bed around 10 pm and can read for an hour or a couple of hours, and I'll then read sometime during lunch, but mainly in the evening and night
Etheria_system@reddit
I’m disabled and have a condition that means my joints dislocate a lot - I find kindles much better for posture and general joint health. They don’t need to be held open and depending on the book, can be lighter than a physical copy. You can also balance them on things which is super helpful in bed
AdFancy6243@reddit
I bought my wife a little Bluetooth clicker that can be used to turn the pages, she doesn't use it all the time but seems quite useful
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
Love my bluetooth clicker, i know you can get stands for kindles, i just prop mine up on a pillow.
thechops10@reddit
I prop mine against my laptop and read during boring meetings!
Apprehensive-List794@reddit
There’s a phone/tablet stand you can buy from Amazon if stand on the floor and has an extendable arm. You can really vibe with it. I have one
Etheria_system@reddit
Yes they’re great! Hoping kindle follow in kobo’s footsteps and launch a Bluetooth clicker at some point because then you don’t need to have it attached to the screen and can go backwards and forwards with it
ChoppingOnionsForYou@reddit
I use my tablet to read, because I'm old and have little old lady eyes, and I use the up/down volume buttons to move through the books.
RubADubDubILuvGrub@reddit
Ooo I haven't heard of these
ooh-sheet@reddit
I have a similar issue with my hand joints so I use Apple Books on my phone, a costly disability to have when you’re an avid reader
highrouleur@reddit
Can I ask what led you to ask this question?
ImaginaryParrot@reddit
Just curiosity.
I read lying down (on my side). By the time I've finished a book my posture is like a worm.
Uncoordinated_Bird@reddit
I love traditional books but I find the kindle makes daily reading so much more accessible. I use the Kindle app on my phone if my kindle is elsewhere is the house 🤣. I’m in my best year yet; 12 books read so far!
wildeaboutoscar@reddit
What kindle do you have? I had one of the original ones and used it until it fell apart. Want to get a new one ahead of a trip but unsure if the paper white is worth it Vs an older gen
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
I'd recommend a Paperwhite. I had a Kindle Basic first brought as a gift, loved it, but then swapped over to a Kindle Colour Soft, which i love even more. But I only recommend the Coloursoft for comics, and for people that light highlighting in different colours. If that doesn't apply, I recommend a Paperwhite.
Ok-Direction-8257@reddit
I'm an audiobook narrator, so every day.
RaspberryJammm@reddit
I'd love to be an audiobook narrator!
How do you prepare for each reading? Are you given direction on how to do different voices or do you have some creative choice? Do you read the book thoroughly ahead of time or are you reading some of it for the first time as you go? Do you have to do loads of extra takes , would you start the whole chapter/ page/ paragraph again or do you just redo the bit you messed up on ?
Ok-Direction-8257@reddit
There are plenty of ways to get started if you're interested! There are some good voice actor and narrator subs on reddit, as well as the ACX one (which is the production wing of Audible).
I read the book twice through before starting and in the 2nd read I make a list of notes and questions to ask the author.
I tend to collaborate to the extent the author wants with regard to character voices. If they have something specific in mind, I'll go with that, if they give me fee reign then I'll just try whatever - if the book is good and the characters are fleshed out there'll be enough cues for me. Sometimes I've surprised them with a character voice but they usually roll with it - it must be quite surreal to have your own words read back to you.
And yeah, if I stuff up a line, I just stop, repeat it and edit out the error later. You can also do a thing called punch and roll, where you can re-record takes while recording.
It's quite a lengthy process, but you can have a lot of fun. You really have to get used to the sound of your own voice!
FuzzyAromaticSand@reddit (OP)
Seriously?
Ok-Direction-8257@reddit
Yeah, its my career. Though I try to read books for pleasure as well, but I sometimes find myself mumbling the words under my breath. 😆
I listen to plenty of them when walking the dog or driving. Its a good solution if you find it a bit difficult to focus on reading. It's also relaxing and helps de-stress provided you have a good narrator.
Could be a good solution for you.
CelesteJA@reddit
Must be hell on your voice to talk so much. Do you do anything in particular to prevent damage?
Ok-Direction-8257@reddit
Make sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water! Also doing a vocal warm up helps set me up for a long session.
I also edit after I've recorded so that gives time to rest the old vocal chords.
Tea helps as well (but I'm British so I would say that 😉)
lionmoose@reddit
How did you get into that? What's it like as a career?
Ok-Direction-8257@reddit
I started off as an actor and moved into just doing audio post-COVID (when the acting biz kinda went to pieces).
It's quite difficult in the sense that being self-employed in a creative industry can be challenging, but getting repeat clients and being as proactive as possible has meant I'm earning reasonably at the moment.
There's a lot of helpful info and advice on how to get started on reddit if you're interested.
Single-Aardvark9330@reddit
At least an hour a day, usually more just depends
I always have a book I'm reading on my phone, either in kindle or from the library, so I'll often start reading if I've got 5 minutes or I'm drinking a cup of tea
Gold-Perception-8021@reddit
Pretty much everyday, usually in bed before sleep, even just a page, it helps me fall asleep
Stefgrep66@reddit
Always got a book on the go, although I have a kindle, haven't bought an actual paperback book for many years.
I'm currently reading The prophet and the idiot by Jonas Jonason, best known for The hundred year old man who jumped out the window and disappeared which I really enjoyed.
This one's harder work but entertaining enough🙂
Bubbly_Barracudas@reddit
Daily. Sometimes 2 in a day if the book is good (and less than 500 pages) and I’m not in work. I average about 7- 8 books per week, and last year I read about 330 books in total. Already on 100 for this year.
Gone_For_Lunch@reddit
A lot less than I used to do. I try and read a bit each night but I usually end up falling asleep.
daisygiraffe13@reddit
I go through phases, I read 22 books between Jan 1st and March 29th. Haven't read a single page since, I have two books sat on my coffee table waiting to be read but im just not feeling it. It'll come back around though.
Deep_Banana_6521@reddit
I start a lot of books but finish not so many. I do listen to a LOT of audiobooks though. I can easily get through one or one and a half a day whilst I work.
Jaikus@reddit
My partner and I read for about 20-30 mins in bed every night, and for about the same on off-work mornings after breakfast.
julesharvey1@reddit
Read most days. Helps me relax
atimelyending@reddit
Every single day. I read two books at a time - a paperback during meals and on my tablet before I sleep. I am a speed reader so reading two at once means I don't go through them too quickly. I read hundreds of books a year, I'd die without the escapism of them
CaveJohnson82@reddit
Every day. I have a kindle that I cart about with me wherever I go; even if I don't get a chance (or just don't feel like it) I always read a few pages before bed.
AlarmingCash754@reddit
Not often at all. My wife loves reading, it’s something I tried to get myself into. There’s a couple of Japanese manga books that I’ve read and enjoyed though.
droneupuk@reddit
I read every day usually for a couple hours and have for like the past ten years other than a 9 month period where I was moving and changing jobs and life was all crazy.
InfectedEllie@reddit
About 1 or 2 a year.
wafflespuppy@reddit
I read every day so I can get through 1 - 4 books a week depending on how long/how engaging they are
CuppaJos@reddit
Growing up I read constantly and in adulthood have gone through phases of picking it up again. The thing is when I read I just completely lose track of time so want to have a clear day/afternoon/evening to get stuck in. I went through a lull for a while but have recently gotten back into it again.
Lessarocks@reddit
I read multiple times every day. It’s been a lifelong habit
iimMrBrightside@reddit
Currently reading through some old Batman comics and Lord of the Rings
paulie_x_walnuts@reddit
I read most days, usually before bed, if only a chapter or two. I probably manage 10-12 books a year on average.
Apprehensive-List794@reddit
Every single day if I can
TKRS67@reddit
I’m about 1 a week. Read a few books as a teenager then none for about 10 years. Decided one day that instead of trying to scroll with the crap signal on the train to work, I’d get a book. Since then I haven’t been able to stop reading. It still feels like an untapped medium with so much depth that I have to explore. I probably read for about 2-3 hours a day now and it’s arguably my favourite hobby.
FuzzyAromaticSand@reddit (OP)
I’m in a similar situation. It would be nice to hear how you managed to stick to that routine
KlutzyGiraffe5094@reddit
Ive cancelled all my subscriptions so teading is the main form of entertainment. I set an alarm for 8 or 9pm to start reading. Ive found if you like any movies, maybe try finding a book related to it, makes it easier to get engaged in the book
RubADubDubILuvGrub@reddit
You just have to find a book or an author you really enjoy, do you have a favourite genre?
TKRS67@reddit
Kept up the books on the commute. And also read for an hour or two before going to sleep. I’m not the best sleeper so I often wake in the middle of the night and when I do, I’ll read instead of being stuck in my head. I still scroll on my phone but I try and replace big chunks of that with reading. My wife bought me a kindle for my birthday when I really got into it, and that had been one of the best presents I’ve ever had.
Also audio books. These are great for times when you can’t physically hold a book / kindle - ie when your driving, walking etc
theinadequategatsby@reddit
I mean I read for a living, sort of (editor, but science with lots of stats and maths, not exactly page-turners) but it's finding the best time for you to read. I love to read in bed before falling asleep, makes it easy to get half an hour a day. But my mum likes to read when she finishes work with a cup of tea, I have a mate who likes to read in the pub after work for an hour and just have his own alone time - find your time and you'll miss it if you don't do it.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
Not for years. I've got no excuses, I prefer to play puzzle games before bed rather than read. My poor kindle sits there unused.
I think ever since my favourite authors died, I've really not got into anything else and lost 'the bug'
Bksudbjdua@reddit
Maybe one a year, one every 2 years? Up until my late teens, you wouldn't see me without a book. I miss that version.
Jealous-Oil-5692@reddit
Every day.. I read around 100 books a year
Dreadheaddanski@reddit
I've always got a book on the go, but sometimes I end up having a few weeks gap between time to read when life gets hectic
AuroraDF@reddit
As soon as I finish the one before. I'm a teacher. In term time I read very little. I do always have an audio book on the go. In the holidays I read a lot. And still also have an audio book on the go!
barrenvagoina@reddit
I read every day, my current streak is 238 days. Sometimes it's a proper struggle and I'm forcing myself to read a page or 2 before bed, but I'm always glad I've done it.
weirdheiny@reddit
I’d say I read maybe 15 books a year, but I read most in warm weather. I like sitting outside in parks of cafes with coffee and a book, and in winter I prefer staying in and watching films or TV shows.
I was a bookworm as a kid so I got down on myself for how much I’d slowed down, but I’ve a lot of other hobbies I bounce between. The people I know reading like 60+ books a year usually read as their main pastime, or the types of books they read are those shorter, easy to fly through romance books.
throwawayonathrow@reddit
Most I’ve read in a year is over 100 books which was about 2-3 a week! On a normal year it’s a book every week or so, especially now I have a baby. I have a kindle and also read physical books if I see a good one somewhere.
nonsense6@reddit
I go through phases where the rest of my life is pretty quiet and I'll read most days and get through about 2 books a week, but then other things take over and I won't read anything for months.
hashbrowneggyolk0520@reddit
I'm exactly the same. I love reading but have always been quite slow at it so i'll go through a few weeks of doing nothing but reading and then that's it for the foreseeable, which is annoying because I want to read more.
Bazzlekry@reddit
Every day, my Kindle goes everywhere with me. I’ll finish my 30th book of the year later today.
Turbulent-Chef4164@reddit
Every day. Proper books only, love the feel and smell.
Dutch_Slim@reddit
Fits and starts. Could read 2 books a week for a few months, then nothing for a year. I used to be super-avid, but now I find it hard to find books I want to read…although I probably have half a dozen in my to-read pile right now. Summer is preferred reading season for me 🙂
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
I probably read 2 or so a week at the moment. I didn’t read at all for years though so I am making up for it now
Blue_wine_sloth@reddit
How did you get back into it?
Hunter037@reddit
Not this poster, but chipping in as I may be able to help. I got back into reading in 2022, and I did so by finding a genre I was interested in and somewhere I could reliably get recommendations from. I don't try and wade my way through books people think I "should" be reading, and only read books I actually find fun and enjoyable. I give up on a book if I'm not enjoying it. And i put aside time to read each day.
sammyyy88@reddit
I also fell out of it for ages. You need good books (obviously!) and to start with just a couple of pages. Sadly your attention span and reading stamina do dissipate after not reading for a while, but they come back with some effort!!
I stopped reading for fun throughout uni years ago, then when I’d had my baby. When he was a little bigger I restarted and it’s a lifeline!
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
I made a New Year’s resolution in 2021 to read 50 books in a year, and it’s one of the only New Year’s resolutions I’ve ever surpassed the goal. Once you find the genre you like & read everyday you get back into quite quickly. I will say though I was an avid reader as a child but secondary school English killed the passion so I wasn’t starting from nowhere. I also track it on ‘reading list’ there’s a load of book tracking apps if you need the accomplishment boost
Etheria_system@reddit
As someone who just got back into reading in October (going from 2 books a year to 39 between October and now), the things that helped me are reading fun stories - things that are very plot driven, having a routine of reading at a set time every night even if it’s just one or two pages, reading short books to get a sense of accomplishment and using my kindle and loading up on cheap deals so there’s always a good range of things for me to choose from on there.
Bubbly_Window9067@reddit
I've switched from listening to music to reading a book on my commute to work. I now often like to have a book with me for any relatively long journey that I take. So I read weekly.
Hunter037@reddit
Daily, if eBooks count. At least 1-2 books a week, and a further 1-2 audiobooks.
Pantles@reddit
I’ve been a daily reader for as long as I have been able to read. As an adult with my own money, I can buy ebooks, subscribe to audible and to Kindle Unlimited. I use my local library when possible too, but joint pain means e-reading is so much easier (and less painful).I get through around 100 books a year, and if I get to go on holiday (🤞🏻) I can inhale a book a day. I love the escapism. I love the different points of view. I love the magic of being transported whilst staying where you are. As GRR Martin wrote, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one”. Fortunately, this isn’t Westeros, and I can live thousands more.
Sheepski@reddit
I read everyday and also listen to audiobooks most days. Even on busy days I tend to get 30-50 pages read on my kindle or physical book. Then I'll listen to a book while doing chores or on a commute etc
Rabbit-1989@reddit
I go through phases. I think this year I've read maybe 2-3 books. Over the last few years I definitely read more since treating myself to a kindle. I need to read more again. When I got rid of all social media back in 2022 I started reading a lot more.
Historical-One2407@reddit
I only read book books on holiday but listen to audiobooks daily
CMDoet@reddit
I read most days but I mostly read poetry nowadays. Somewhere between being a voracious child reader and a burnt out adult I lost the ability to concentrate on novels.
Every now and then I'll read one but at the moment I have vision issues so poetry is easier to read, you can put the book down after one poem if you need to (easier to build a habit), and it's my passion in life so win-win-win tbh.
I've also recently started listening to audiobooks due to my vision issues. I've been listening to memoir/autobiographies.
Next-Associate-8763@reddit
I have ADHD but I like reading, however it takes me months to finish a book, so I read 2-3 books a year.
babybuttoneyes@reddit
I read every day. Since I was a kid as soon as one book is finished I start the next one. Sometimes it might take me a month to finish, sometimes a week, but a day doesn’t pass without me reading at least a page (I fall asleep REALLY quickly).

One book a fortnight and then I’ll have a month where I read nothing. Always miss it but stuff gets in the way of my routine.
ClarkeR77@reddit
I read 5 in the space of 2 weeks last month but none since. It definitely comes and goes
Etheria_system@reddit
I’m on a 202 day reading streak, so currently I read every day. Since October I’ve read 38 books and I’m currently reading book 39.
I exclusively read on my kindle and make use of deals to fill it with things that sound interesting for cheap as well as using Kindle Unlimited. It means when I finish a book, I can always instantly kind another one that sounds interesting.
I’ve got a pretty solid routine for night time - I do some puzzle on an app, then a crossword, then I read. I’m disabled and struggle with chronic fatigue so some days I can only read a page or two, but I read every single evening. If I have energy I might read a chapter or two during the day as well.
My biggest thing has been reading what I enjoy, not what I think I “should” be reading. I used to think I had to read non fiction and literary fiction and modern classics. But these days I read horror and sci fi and litRPGs and cosy murder mysteries and maybe the occasional romance and I’m having much more fun. I also read a lot of short books under 250 pages and middle grade fiction (aka books aimed at 9-13 year olds) which help me when I’m feeling extra fatigued
mustardpanda@reddit
I've enjoyed reading so much more since giving up on what I "should" read. On that topic, I will also not finish books that I'm not enjoying now. I used to stubbornly follow through until the end even when picking up the book felt like a massive chore. There's infinite books to read and life's too short!
Etheria_system@reddit
It seems so obvious to only read what you enjoy once you start doing it, but I felt so much pressure to be a “good” reader who read “proper” books like all my friends do.
I’m the same with DNFing. It’s why out of 39 books there’s only one 1 star and one 2 star (books I stubbornly kept going with because I was so desperate for them to get better - a true rarity). Everything else I read tends to be a 4 or 5 star rating based on enjoyment
Lothcatto@reddit

I don't think your question is as easy to answer as you might think. I mean, Crime and Punishment is still an open book (pardon the pun) for me. I always get stuck at the horse flogging.
Started reading Jerome's translation of the New Testament in November. Slow going... my Latin isn't great. Gonna ditch that now that summer is here and get to the Hemingway I never read. Mrs Carpet is a big fan, and super annoyed at me for not having read any.
So, daily, I suppose. But I also don't know what you mean by "read a book." Literature is not a "done and dusted" kinda deal; it's organic. The words on the page may not change, but you do.
knittingkitten04@reddit
I read daily but the amount I read varies. So I might just read the odd chapter or two before going to sleep or an entire book every day depending on how I'm feeling. It averages out at around a book a week over a year. I've always read after teaching myself early on (I'm autistic and it can be a thing), can't imagine not reading at all daily. I have a kindle now which is the best thing as if I finish a book in the night I can instantly start another one as well as comfortably read without a light so I don't disturb my partner

When I was a kid I used to read constantly. I always had a book on the go, and I would finish most things in a day or two. It was uni when that stopped really. Up until last year i didnt read any. Yes i bought books etc but never actually sat down to read them.

I read every day before I go to sleep and have done my whole life. I actually find it impossible to drop off if I haven't read a few chapters and, now that I'm retired, I usually read until 2am. I have been known to still be reading at 4am if it's a gripping tale. I've joined two book clubs so that I try different genres and don't stick to my favourite authors all the time.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to choose a good book and get into reading? I have read autobiographys in the past and enjoyed them but would like to read fiction. Thanks

I am a full time worker (compressed hours) and a part time student for 5 months of the year (during which my reading heavily slows down).

I was a big childhood reader, then uni ruined my love of books. I would read a maximum of 2 books a year for a few years, then I got into book series last year and read over 70 books in a year. I've never been a great reader. I mean, my reading ability is great, I've just always struggled to sit down and read. Managed a couple of novels in my lifetime, but absolutely not what you'd call an avid reader by any means. That being said, I will absolutely demolish a 1000+ page motorbike service manual multiple times without issue.
I love audiobooks, though. I have a bloody massive Audible library.

At the start of 2025 it was my new year's resolution to start reading again so I dug out my old kindle and got a free trail for kindle unlimited so I could find some things I liked without spending tons.
I decided to carve out 1 hour a day to "reading" what this meant was phone and watch went on Do Not Disturb and I'd make myself a coffee and sit and read, sometimes it was for 10/15 mins and other times it was for the full hour.
It took me a while to find genres and authors that I liked and if you've any friends that read it might be nice to read books they've read/liked so you can talk about them with them.
Now I read a mixture of physical and digital books and sometimes it's only a chapter a day and other times it's for a couple hours but it's nice to disconnect for while.
What I'm really enjoying is reading The Count of Monte Cristo over the course of the year since it's a pretty intimidating book to read but they break it down so it's 1-3 chapters every week

Reading books used to be my go-to leisure activity, but for the last 20 years of my working life I was a freelance book editor, and the last thing I wanted to do after a day's work was read a book.
"Never mind," I thought. "I'll get back into reading when I retire."
But that never happened. Editing appears to have killed off my interest in reading something as substantial as a book. I remember an incident a few years ago: I heard someone reading an extract from Dickens' Great Expectations and thought "Wow! that's fantastic." So I bought a copy. But I couldn't get past the first chapter. The book was full of unnecessary commas!

Over the last several months my wife has really found her love of books again and got a kindle and all that which I’m super happy for her. I upgraded her kindle and I thought ‘I’ll give her old one a go’.
I must say, it’s been a lovely detachment from what can be a pretty stressful day and I read it a bit before bed most nights. I also take it when I travel for work. Read more in the last couple of months than I’ve read in several years.
I found the joy in reading again and realistically, I think there’s something for everything. Find something that brings you joy or interests you. There’s something for everyone.

I struggle to have the mental bandwidth to read much these days, which makes me sad as I used to be glued to books when I was younger.
I have read three books in the space of the last month, but that's only due to insomnia (which has its own issues). I am finding that chaptered books help as it breaks it up a bit more.

I am an avid reader, but due to chronic illness and stress, I've had to change the way I consume books.
I use audiobooks and listen to them on my Bluetooth headphones before sleep, for about 30mins to an hour. Maybe that would help you get back into books? With a good narrator, you are transported and it's very calming and escapist.

Daily. I read maybe 30-50 books a year. You can prize my Kindle+ sub out of my cold, dead hands 😂 I also listen to a lot of audiobooks. They are great, constant entertainment while cooking, cleaning, walking, driving, exercising etc!
My tip is to read whatever the fuck you want/like. There’s no prize for reading literary classics or ‘must read’ books (unless that’s what you enjoy). I read romance predominantly, which is probably scoffed at by ‘serious’ readers but who cares. I read as pure escapism & the romance genre does that for me. I do also like a bit of fantasy/paranormal or a good adventure story!
There are some fantastic book based Instagram accounts for most genres packed with recs & reviews!

Reading whatever the fuck you want has been so transformative for my relationship with reading. It sounds stupid because like of course that’s what you should do but I got it into my head that there were “proper” books that I “should” be reading and as a result ended up hardly reading at all.
Now I read what I enjoy and DNF books pretty quickly. I give 5 star ratings to books that don’t have the best writing but are a hell of a lot of fun. I realised that despite hating horror films, I love horror books especially folk horror. I started reading middle grade because kids books are actually fantastic a lot of the time.

I only just started, since two and a half years ago, and only three books, and only at the pub and I have to be not too occupied and I constantly start and stop, and consequently take months.
All are Dean Koontz, since that plus Richard Raymond is what my mother read and I was always intrigued by them as a child. Even that classic book smell I associate with the genre these books are as a result.
Recently finished Strangers, which I had to get my own copy of because hers' fell apart years ago. I even specified the bookstore to get one with that exact artwork because I love those old cover arts of their books and as a result they got a copy from before the century. It's very good if you love mystery and suspense.
Lightning (Same author) is the best time travel story I have known yet. Darkness Comes feels like a B/low-budget Hollywood movie novelised and far better for it rather than being a film; rightly or wrongly I imagined the two main characters as Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

january this year i read 4 books. febuary 1. march none. it might be 6 months before i read any more. or i might read 3 in may. who knows! its never steady for me.
rockchick99@reddit
Currently half way through 2 books and an audiobook
PCPHK@reddit
I work in a library and never have time to read any books at the moment, apart from the ones I’m reading for storytime! I would love to get further than the intro in them all!
Omnissiah40K@reddit
About as often as Russell Brand reads his bible.
highrouleur@reddit
I have a Kindle that I'll read at work during breaks. Sometimes it'll take months to get through a book, 'count of monte cristo' literally lasted October to march a couple of years ago. It was good, but it went on a bit
crispycat40@reddit
I read a lot online so that takes time away from reading books.
I mean information stuff connected to my job, lots of stuff to do with SEND law and special needs.
I’m not sure you’d call it ‘reading for pleasure’ and it’s certainly not relaxing, but I read it all out of interest more than CPD.
Affectionate-Safe520@reddit
Daily, even if it’s just a few pages. Currently on book 32 for the year
pibandpob@reddit
I read every night in bed, as I can't fall asleep without doing so. Reading at other points of the day largely depends on how much spare time I have.
crispycat40@reddit
I’m reading a book I’m not enjoying so not very often at the moment. I could just stop…
But when I find something I enjoy, I binge read it until the early hours of the morning then suffer.
I constantly have ‘something I’m reading’ but I’m not constantly reading.
Max1357913@reddit
I don’t read books at all - I tend to play text-heavy, story focused video games, which fills that void, and I just find more engaging
-Gypsy-Eyes-@reddit
I read 12 books in the first 3 months of this year, then haven't read a single page since the start of this month. I love to read bit when things become more stressful I can't read at all, which is how this month has been. That, and with the weather being much warmer my lethargy goes through the roof and I can't bring myself to read. I hate it and wish I could read every night regardless of other factors
bitesize10@reddit
I read every day, usually multiple times a day. I average about 1-2 books per week, unless I’m reading a thick fantasy one.
Blue_wine_sloth@reddit
I used to read continuously but the lack of any kind of routine in my life has increased the symptoms of what I think is undiagnosed ADHD and I can’t focus at all.
I’ve started 4 books this year but not completed one and it’s almost May. At least last year I got through 4 or 5 and some short stories.
0xflarion@reddit
Almost daily. I've a final bit: don't be scared to dnf a book when it doesn't make you read it.
BatsWaller@reddit
I try to read something every day, even if it’s just a couple of chapters of whatever I’ve got on the go. I put on an audiobook in the car for my little boy when I take him to nursery - tried CBeebies radio once and it was horrendous. I’ve a friend who claims to read upwards of 300 books a year - she’s either bullshitting or a time traveller!
the-TARDIS-ran-away@reddit
Sometimes i dont read for months, sometimes i read 2 or 3 books a week.
Pyriel@reddit
I lost my ability to read novels when studying for a part-time master's degree.
I found myself either skimming or reading the same paragraph again and again but just not taking in the story.
It took me a while to untrain myself and get back into just losing myself in a story.
I got the expanse trilogy for Christmas and managed to lose myself in them successfully, and have just bought the 9-book set to continue the journey.
So I'm currently reading for a few hours about 4 days a week.
Ancient-Egg2777@reddit
I've been an avid ready since I was a child. Due to stress, I stopped reading altogether. It's taken me almost 2 years to get back on the wagon. I aim for 3 a month, thanks to GoodReads and signing up for availability alerts with my library.
FuzzyAromaticSand@reddit (OP)
Thanks for your openness. Hope it gets better for you soon
BaBaFiCo@reddit
I've read ten books so far this year.
runJUMPclimb@reddit
Every day. On my commute to and from work and in bed before I go to sleep. On long journeys I will always read. When people ask what do I want for my birthday I just send them a link to my book list or ask they buy me vouchers for bookshop.org. It takes a lot of pressure off trying to think of something I want on the spur of the moment. I also keep nearly all the books I read as i will nearly always reread them. Having many shelves of books in your home is like having a large record collection. It adds character to your home, allows people to immediately see what interests you, and often stimulates conversations.
Right.. Off to bed now to read a book.
JoPOWz@reddit
Every day. I used to read a lot and realised I’d stopped, so set myself a challenge 3 years ago to read 50 new books in a year. I hit 50 in 6 months so just kept going and ended the year on 113 or so. It’s important to note that a lot were just short, cheerful easy reads from Kindle Unlimited, though mixed with a few bigger, more refined reading.
Since then I have kept the habit of reading most nights for at least an hour, if not longer, before bed. I find it very relaxing, a good distraction if I’m anxious, a good cheer up if I’m down.
TheNotSpecialOne@reddit
Very rarely. Maybe one book a year if even that
BrowsingOnMaBreak@reddit
I used to be someone who got through an average of 60 books a year - most I did was 105 I think - but for the past three years I have also been… not even stressed, but mentally fatigued, so I’ve at most read 2 books a year.
Obvious_Flamingo3@reddit
I don’t read but I have audiobooks - I try listen every week but can be hard to find something that really clicks
Scottie99@reddit
Most days, I find it more relaxing than an iPad or kindle.
ghodsgift@reddit
Phases, but right now its daily. My downtime is when I can't decide what to read next and then I spend a lot of time obsessing over finding the right book for me.
RelativeShoulder370@reddit
I read most days in the evening, but only a couple of chapters so it can take a while to finish a book. But I don't think that matters, it's just important to enjoy what you read. When you are going through rough times it can be hard to concentrate so following a story is difficult. You will get back there just take your time and maybe try short stories or magazines if you are missing your book fix.
Miss_Type@reddit
I read every day, have done since I could read, even on days when I'm absolutely hammered or shattered when I get into bed. I read slowly though, so maybe a book a week, sometimes longer if it's non-fiction because for some reason they sometimes have smaller type! I'm currently reading a pre-teen book about a girl who saves the world, a book about war/bears by Richard Adams, and a book about London in the late 16th/early 17th century.
The trick is to find books you like the sound of and want to read, not to read books on lists, or books everyone else is reading, or books you think you should read. Just read what you like!
caldawggy13@reddit
Every tram ride on the way to work. Every night in bed, can't sleep if I don't. Could easily power through 100+ books a year if I didn't read absolute bricks all the time.
Also summer, I love going for hikes and walks and chilling reading in nature.
Skruffbagg@reddit
Used to be one a month until I had kids, then I didn’t have the free time.
I used audiobooks now when I’m in the car and can probably say 1 every 6 weeks now.
coffeewalnut08@reddit
Once every few months
pu55yobsessed@reddit
I’ve been in a reading slump since I finished Lonesome Dove a couple of months ago.
BitterHawk55@reddit
Almost daily but that varies from 15 mins to a few hours depending on the day and my mood. Used to rush through books to ‘complete’ 52 a year but have, happily, matured enough to actually savour books now 🤓
Ambivalent-Axolotl@reddit
I go through phases, but I normally do 40-60 a year, and I read probably every other day or so.
I like using Storygraph to track my reading and the little dopamine hit from ticking a book off as read is lush!
Life_Of_Smiley@reddit
I read everyday. Ainimim of 4-5 books a moth, up to about 10-12. I mostly read in bed and have a audiobook on the go when I am walking or driving anywhere.
grepusman@reddit
My current rate is about once every 20 years.
TheHootOwlofDeath@reddit
I read daily for about 30 minutes. I have always loved reading and it's so easy to read anywhere now I have a Kindle.
Strong_Quiet_4569@reddit
As often as you like. Once you own the book there’s no limit.
CmdrDavidKerman@reddit
I need my kindle to unwind and fall asleep at night, so I always have one on the go. I don't get through them that fast though, probably takes me at least a month to read most books. I read a lot more on holiday and usually read a book or two a week then.
JJ-2020@reddit
Not read a book in the last 10 years
BobBobBobBobBobDave@reddit
Sometimes, a few a month, sometimes I don't finish one for months. Really depends how much time I get to read and what is going on in life.
I used to average over a book a week for a long time, but I was single and didn't have a TV.
IndividualCurious322@reddit
Daily. I have my own personal library. I've read 34 books so far this year and am currently translating and reading a French book on Joan of Arc called "L'Affaire Jeanne d'Arc" by Roger Senzig and Marcel Gay. It's very good and has a great bibliography at the back for similar works (some of which I've already purchased).
BoopingBurrito@reddit
Pretty much daily.
Odd-Accident-3287@reddit
Not for a long time
Dreadpirateflappy@reddit
audiobook daily in my car, and most nights I will read my kindle.
If I have a bath I always have a non fiction book I read in there.
So quite a lot.
MacaronSea6953@reddit
I average about 80 a year
Mugweiser@reddit
Whenever I buy one
hollyyy16@reddit
So far I’ve read 9 books this year - aiming for 30! Last year I read 13. Year before 2 books.
I try to read most nights before bed. But I dreamt the other night I was in the Hunger Games so I might stick to daytime reading for now.
I find it easier to read ebooks so I can just read it whenever I’m on my phone rather than having to bring a physical book everywhere.
McLipstick@reddit
I read about 5 or 6 books a month and usually have an audiobook on the go too
jimboish01@reddit
Takes me about a year to read a book physically but I get through at least an audiobook a month
Idontunderstandmost@reddit
Maybe about 3 a year - but more if you prefer to listen to audio books while you clean or walk or travel etc - you can always do that.
Coocoocachoo1988@reddit
I never know how to answer this question. If textbooks and factual stuff count, then I read a bit every day, but I doubt I'll be finishing a 1200-page textbook in a hurry. I also try to read a short, plain language book every month in a language I'm trying to learn, but those don't feel like they count either.
A book purely for fun feels like forever ago, but I tend to do try and do one in summer as an excuse to sit in the sun.
aeyinia@reddit
Daily! I read somewhere between 70 - 100 books a year depending on life and reading slumps.
I don’t keep my phone in my bedroom so I read before bed and I listen to a lot of audiobooks when I’m pottering around the house or at work.
fbruk@reddit
It varies as sometimes it just depends on what I'm reading. Some books I just devour, like can't stop thinking about what is happening next in it so I HAVE to keep reading.
jooniejoon3@reddit
I go through phases. Last month, I read one every day. This month I’ve probably read one or two and were already at the end of it!
Grey_Belkin@reddit
Not nearly as much as I'd like. I'm sitting with a book open on my lap right now and yet here I am on Reddit. My concentration is shot, but I'm trying to get back in the habit of reading, I used to read constantly when I was young.
zendayaismeechee@reddit
I’m reading every day atm but my concentration levels vary so sometimes I’ll read two books in a month and other times I’ll do about ten in two weeks! It’s weird
Prudent-Pressure2146@reddit
Based on my good reads 20 ish a year
QuestNetworkFish@reddit
Not as often as I'd like, but I'm trying to make an effort to read more consistently this year. Currently on my 13th book since January! I'm taking full advantage of my local library including their ebooks, and pick up interesting things I see in charity shops, I'm not too bothered about having "nice" books for the shelves so mostly find paperbacks and ebooks easier to read anyway.
TheAnxiousPangolin@reddit
I read every day. Depending on the length of the book I get through about 3 - 4 per month.
Rasty_lv@reddit
Sadly, not as many as i used to, however.. In last \~2-3 years ive been deep into audiobooks. I find them amazing. I can do chores and listen to them, or in car when driving. I have good hearing memory.
Also, super amazing discovery for me was phil dragash soundscape project Lord of the rings books. Not only they had written text said out loud, but also audio effects, like wind blowing, roaring river, battle sounds. God, I need more audiobooks like that.
lookeo@reddit
I really struggled to read for about 20 years rwdig maybe 10 books a year, then got diagnosed with anxiety.
On sertaline now and got a bit more space in my head and I usually have a audio book, a fiction and a none fiction in the gonat the same time. Including audio books I read 78 books last year (started meds in August) and read 39 books so far this year. I know the exact figures because I use Goodreads and Storygraph.
My tip would be to start off on whatever gets you started, doesn't matter what it is or how long it is. I find fiction easier and if I am even struggling with that swap to graphic novels to get back on the wagon.
Tonybham01@reddit
Every day
Cedar_Wood_State@reddit
Everyday. I replaced my scrolling/netflix during meal with reading, and downloaded kindle app so I read during commute/waiting with reading. Basically didn’t have to spend any ‘extra’ time but also getting some reading done
bishibashi@reddit
I’ve always got a fiction and a non fiction on the go, but I don’t get through them very quickly as reading always makes me nod off these days. My wife gets through about 4 a week, always has. I still beat her at university challenge though (got to cling to something).
ben_jamin_h@reddit
According to my kindle, I read 12 books in 2024, 7 books last year and have read 2 so far this year. I need to up my game, I'm trailing off!
Esoteric_Prurience@reddit
Usually have one on the go at any time - sometimes it is a heavy tome that takes me a month or so to wade through reading it one or two nights a week. Others I read back to back paperback slop that are fun reads and I can get through those in under a week. I'll always have something on the bed stand though.
I'm in my mid 30's now so I don't read as much as I used to in my teens and 20's.
My partner (51F) she is either reading one book every other day, or goes half a year without reading at all.
Hope that helps answer your questions.
BrewtallyCozy@reddit
I try to read daily, but seem to be in a slump…
infieldcookie@reddit
I read at least a little bit most days. I’d say I usually finish about 1-2 books a week unless I’m in a slump.
atzucac_fill@reddit
I keep a few on the go and switch back and forth. Usually novel, non-fiction and short stories. Having another book to jump back into helps if one is going a bit slow helps avoid falling into scrolling.
D0wnInAlbion@reddit
I probably average one a month. I have several different interests so tend to spread my free time across them.
Ambitious_Hackerman@reddit
It varies, but anywhere from one book a month up to one or two a week. Depends strongly on the book, when I was younger I'd happily polish off fiction books in 3 to 4 days. Nowadays I don't have as much free time but do make the effort to read regularly
Motor-Command-2680@reddit
Daily. I don't always finish it but i read daily.
Rocinante23@reddit
15-20 a year
