Atmos proposes 16% price increase for many residential customers

If you received a proposed rate increase notice for your Atmos natural gas bill, here is what you need to know and do NOW to protect your pocketbook.
KNOW:
Atmos is proposing a 16% increase for residential customers, but only a 11% increase for their commercial customers.
The Texas Railroad Commission (which is totally beholden to oil & gas) is the primary authority for filing complaints regarding utility rate hikes. Although they are likely to make a token reduction to reduce this increase, you can be sure a large increase will be approved.
The Republican Primary runoff election is May 26 between Jim Wright (incumbent) and Bo French (heavily funded by hardline conservative donors). Should Bo French win, you can be sure he will reward his mega-donors & I'll let you guess who these are and where there interest lie.
The General election for RRC is in November and the Democratic candidate is Jon Rosenthal, but the last time a Democrat was elected to RRC was 1990.
DO:
You can and should file a formal on-line complaint with the RRC opposing this increase https://www.rrc.texas.gov/gas-services/complaint-filing/customer-complaint/ even though this is not sufficient
If you live within city limits, the city council often has jurisdiction over rate changes. Contact your city mayor and city council representative as well
Finally, Atmos knows very well that most of their notices go straight to the trash or are never read or understood; so it's most important that you make your friends and neighbors aware of this outrageous rate increase.

The free money corps get from the stock market isn't enough they have to take it from the people

We've moved to electric as it makes sense. Heat pump water heater, oven/stove were already electric, next will be heat pump air conditioner when the furnace dies.
Electric will go up too, but at some point it will make sense to get my own solar panels.
Razor1834@reddit
Electricity and natural gas cost move together almost exactly everywhere, including here, once you consider efficiency.
-transcendent-@reddit
That's fine since I have a paid off solar panel. I'm not getting a 1:1 buyback anyways so why would I send it back to the grid for a discount. I'd rather use all of the generated power.
us1549@reddit
Have you seen the price of natural gas in the last few months? It has gone up way more than just 16%
budrow21@reddit
We pay actual natural gas cost as a pass-thru on top of all other costs. This is them screwing us, not the cost of gas going up.
us1549@reddit
I'm too poor to use natural gas. Everything in my apartment is electricity driven

Most electricity in this state comes from LNG
tx_queer@reddit
Exactly zero of Texas' electricity comes from LNG. Only place in the US that used LNG to make electricity is new England and they buy theirs from Trinidad and Tobego. But they shut down the plant (although the LNG terminal is still supposed to stay open for a couple years). Texas burns absolutely zero LNG for electricity.

Bullshit
tx_queer@reddit
What part of this am I supposed to read? The link highlights that Texas is the largest exporter of LNG. Thats true. We do almost twice as much as the next highest state.
But I see no reference to LNG being used anywhere in the electricity generation process.

You guys keep throwing links at me and I dont know what Im supposed to read. This is the fuel mix for Texas. It has natural gas, wind, solar, nuclear. It does not have a category for LNG. If we burned any It would likely show up under the natural gas category anyways, but we dont burn any LNG. We export it all.

Texas is one of the largest producer of renewables wind and solar

Agree

Some new AI Data Centers are switching to natural gas to appease the public of being off the electrical grid because residential costs have increased. So now I suppose natural gas prices will rise. Data Centers should supply their own energy needs.
Razor1834@reddit
Any chance there’s supporting documentation for this?

I don’t trust this source at all. Not because of the website, but because it’s intentionally misleading. For example, if you click on their link in the story https://www.marketplace.org/story/2026/01/29/why-are-energy-prices-rising-its-not-just-data-centers you’ll find a story that says “In fact, in a lot of places, it’s not even mostly because of data centers.” Like whichever viewpoint you want, there it is.
Wild_Arm34@reddit
You vetted my source, that's fair. Let's play fact chess. you counter with your source disproving it. And I'll vet it. Deal?
Razor1834@reddit
I found this one.
Wild_Arm34@reddit
Your retort is to post a link to a wiki page, which offers no proof for your argument. To quote you, “I don’t trust this source at all.”
The challenge from me to you was to post from a source ‘you’ trust disproving the information. If you’re not willing to do that, I’ll have no qualms whatsoever.
Razor1834@reddit
Try the link again. You’ll get it.

Quite simply, if you're interested in the subject of this post, you can can conduct your own research.

Let those data centers pay the full price for the energy they use. Residential customers should not be subsidizing this mess.
dageekywon@reddit
Is this related to the recent gas explosions? They had two a few days ago I guess, not sure whose responsibility, but I have a feeling insurance costs will be climbing.
Fabulous_Hand2314@reddit
But but but but Muh data centers!!!!

The Top executives need a raise. Cost of living is going up and those poor people need to maintain. LOL I live ina small apt and pay 40 some bucks a month flat rate because i use to little gas to apparently.
