It's the case for EVs in general. The tech is still changing rapidly which means every new model has its own unique problems that likely wont get long term support. Combine that with the fact that EVs are not a corolla, meaning you're not fixing stuff in your garage, and instead left a hefty bill.

Rivian will sell tons at that price.

I'll be a buyer later this year when the lidar-equipped units drop. But I secretly want an R3X like it's nobody's business.

At $53k it blows away its main ICE competitor, the 4Runner. The front seats of the 4Runner (around $50k for a trd off road with 4x4, $57k for a Limited without the hybrid setup) with all its blank switches and plastic feels like you’re driving a barbie jeep compared to the Rivian.

It's alright. The Trailseeker is dual-motor and starts at $39k, for instance, and the top-trim Touring line is $47k. Honda's Prologue is right in that range as well. You're right that the R2 is technically 'premium' and that'll set it apart in some sense, but on price alone it's more like mid-range.

Unfortunately big wheels sell. This is a mass market vehicle therefore it needs the big wheels to pass the visual check.

In fact this vehicle seems specifically designed to hit all of the normal buyer targets. It’s a small SUV, it has plastic cladding, it has light bars. It’s got screens, has that rugged cred. And it has, apparently, decent pricing. Everything buyers today want.

Seems like a pretty killer product if Rivian can deliver them and support them.

Starting production isn't the hard part. They still have to prove they can scale (and the main factory to do so won't be ready for years) and control costs in an increasingly unfriendly market for EVs.

An R2 would actually be perfect for me, but i'm sure as heck gonna wait a few years. Especially because they've announced all sorts of improvements it'll get that just aren't ready yet. Anyone buying a first-year vehicle like this is gonna pay the early adopter tax for sure.

They also still have a pretty major issue of lack of service centers. Once they get a lot more vehicles on the road like they want to that's gotta be fixed. My nearest one is 5 hours away.
