New Amtrak pizza

Amtrak is making some changes to their menus on some routes and just introduced Screamin’ Sicilian Cheese Pizza to replace the Deluxe Stromboli and Classic Grilled Cheese. Definitely a pizza of all time, it was so stuck to the box that I could only get it out with a fork. The Cafe Car attendant also gave me grief for ordering it because it’s like 5 times as much work as the items it’s replacing were to prepare. At least it tastes good, definitely better than the grilled cheese and better than the DiGiorno’s they used to have.

I got stuck on an Amtrak train from Denver to Iowa for 25 hours a few years back. At about hour 19 I went and got pizza and Pinot Grigio after the joke of a “free meal” they gave us, it was somehow the worst pizza and wine of my life and the best. This picture fits that well.

I love riding the train, and I expect the food to be kinda crappy. It's just nice to be able to get up and walk to the cafe car, pick out what I want, get a drink, whatever. It's not glamorous, but I never expected it to be.
Would much rather ride the train than take a plane.

One guess is it’s cheaper. Pizza is dirt cheap to make but it’s pretty labor intensive. Frozen mozzarella sticks are very expensive to serve but they’re stupid easy to make for example.

This is more expensive microwave frozen pizza. That being said they probably got a good deal from Screamin Sicilian. They provide the pizza at a good price since they're selling tens of thousands more of them. Then every time you order pizza on Amtrak you see their logo.

Maybe I'm crazy or maybe I just have a soft spot for questionable pizza but that looks legitimately decent to me. I'm not sure what more I would expect on a train. And Screamin Sicilian uses decent ingredients and good cheese, so it probably tastes pretty good, too.

That’s a Screamin' Sicilian Bessie's Revenge frozen pizza. Recognized that font immediately. As far as frozen pizzas go they are really good in a proper oven. Not so when you microwave it in the package.

man....I'm about to start riding Amtrak on occasion and this confirms that my decision to bring my own small soft sided cooler and food with me when I do is the correct one.

If you ride a long distance train that has traditional dining, it’s worth the money to try it at least once (and you get it free if you’re in a sleeping car). That stuff is actually fresh and can be really good.
This is just cafe car food which is all pre-packaged and the hot things are just microwaved.

Several years ago, some Amtrak trains switched to “flexible dining” which uses pre-packaged/reheated meals instead of real chefs in a kitchen. To their credit, Amtrak has been restoring the chef-prepared meals on a couple of those routes in the past couple years.

Just so you're aware, in case you ordered cheese because your vegetarian, that brand uses rennet in the the cheese so even though there is like pepperoni or ham or whatever on it it still isn't vegetarian.

Definitely looks like they skipped a couple of those troublesome preparation steps. Microwaving a pizza isn't the best way to go, but leaving it hot inside the box to get all soggy is easily avoidable and a big reason why it turned out so bad.

It wasn’t even left in there for very long. It was handed to me straight out of the microwave after it was put into an outer box (so I wouldn’t burn myself). In fairness I don’t know how they could do it better with the equipment and resources they have. I’m just glad to have food to eat that tastes good, as horrible as it looks.
