Sort-of, kind-of?
I know that the British Isles are part of the European continent. However, if someone says they’re “taking a trip to Europe,” I think that implies continental Europe.
The UK could certainly be part of a tour of Europe, but if I were going specifically to the UK, I wouldn’t call it “a trip to Europe.”
Ok-Flight-1504@reddit
Of course. Why on Earth wouldn't it be?
DeMessenZijnGeslepen@reddit
Maybe if you went to the Bermuda or the Cayman Islands, it wouldn't be.
ABelleWriter@reddit
Those countries are not in the UK
Bawstahn123@reddit
>Of course. Why on Earth wouldn't it be?
Some Brits consider the UK to be distinct from Europe, for some reason
Metal_Rider@reddit
I’m guessing they’re asking because the UK left the EU. I still consider it part of Europe though.
donuttrackme@reddit
The EU is not Europe. It is a collective of some European nations.
Metal_Rider@reddit
That’s what I said
OG-BigMilky@reddit
Europe, the continent, predates the European Union by juuuust a little bit. It’s weird to me that anyone would tie the two together.
elisabethofaustria@reddit
I think the distinction is actually mostly because it’s not part of continental Europe. I agree that it’s still a part of Europe though.
Pretty-In-Scarlet@reddit
Also it is not on the continent
LivingGhost371@reddit
EU vs non EU status doens't mean a whole lot to Americans.
deathbychips2@reddit
Switzerland has never been in the EU and most people who consider themselves in Europe if they went there
gummibearhawk@reddit
More like a trip to the middle east
No_Importance_750@reddit
Yes it is in Europe
ReadingRainbowie@reddit
Yeah
jigokubi@reddit
No.
Though they're part of Europe, the UK seems to see itself as something separate from Europe, even when they were part of the EU. And If I imagine a trip to Europe, I'm not picturing a trip to England.
DevilPixelation@reddit
Well, yeah. It’s a European country.
Murderhornet212@reddit
It’s part of the continent of Europe. If I were just going there I’d probably just say the UK though. If I were also going to France or the Netherlands or something, then I’d phrase it as going “to Europe”.
Danibear285@reddit
Not at all. Britain isn’t in the European Union so it’s not European.
xnatlywouldx@reddit
No, because UK citizens are apparently none too fond of Europe themselves.
altarwisebyowllight@reddit
Yes. You're part of Europe, honey. You can't actually leave a continent.
LifeApprehensive2818@reddit
They're even part of the same tectonic plate, locked together for the next few eons until subduction takes them.
Bracatto@reddit
I consider them the black sheep of Europe. But still European.
WafflePeak@reddit
Yes and for context most Americans think it’s ridiculous that people from the UK use Europe to refer to “everywhere in Europe but where I am”
WulfTheSaxon@reddit
Yes, but if I were only going to one country I’d just say its name – going to “Europe” implies more than one country.
That said, the UK may be part of Europe but it isn’t part of “continental Europe”, which is a synonym of mainland Europe.
Tall-Supermarket-791@reddit
The United Kingdom is geographically part of Europe, as it is located off the northwestern coast of the continent. However, politically, it has distanced itself from the European Union since Brexit in 2016.
Vachic09@reddit
It counts as pat of the European continent, but not as continental Europe.
Carrotcake1988@reddit
Nope. I’m well aware that the UK is technically part of the European continent.
But, in recent years? It’s become a destination separate from the continent.
If I was booking a trip? I would book a UK trip and a Europe trip as separate things.
Maurice_Foot@reddit
If I could afford it and could take the time off.
theycallmethevault@reddit
It’s on the European continent, not to mention a member of the EU. I’ve heard that the UK doesn’t consider itself quite the same as the rest of Europe because of its geographical location, I can respect that! Just like NKY doesn’t consider itself part of Kentucky but Ohio doesn’t want them either. 😛
Mysterious_Mode_4460@reddit
The UK left the EU
theycallmethevault@reddit
OMG, you’re right. I’m a dummy. I’ll edit my comment to remove it.
dirtyllama720@reddit
You know Americans aren’t THAT stupid right?
cans-of-swine@reddit
Im pretty stupid.
Tankieforever@reddit
I mean, you’re from Tennessee. It’s not your fault.
HorseFeathersFur@reddit
Nah fam, you aren’t
Pitiful_Bunch_2290@reddit
Seem to be smarter than OP.
cans-of-swine@reddit
I'm good at pretending.
EpicAura99@reddit
Well yeah but you’re cans of swine, not a people
RobotShlomo@reddit
When I went the UK was still part of the EU. So yes.
HorseFeathersFur@reddit
Yes. The UK is in/on/part of the continent of Europe.
Pitiful_Bunch_2290@reddit
Yes. Because I successfully completed the second grade and learned basic geography.
___HeyGFY___@reddit
Of course. Brexit did not remove them from Europe, just the European Union.
I_Weep_for_Willow@reddit
Well... yeah. Is this a trick question?
Gertrude_D@reddit
Yes, because it is.
Dear-Bet5344@reddit
I mean, technically yeah but no. I would say I went to the UK. If I went to Italy I wouldn't say I went to Europe either. I'd say I went to Italy.
Now if I visited a few countries then I would say I went to Europe.
MyUsername2459@reddit
Yes, of course.
You know, they didn't leave the European continent with Brexit, right?
Pretty-In-Scarlet@reddit
Actually they are an island so they were not on the continent before either
MyUsername2459@reddit
They're a part of the European continent, even if they're an island.
Nobody's saying that Japan isn't part of Asia despite being an archipelago of islands. Nobody is saying that Madagascar isn't part of Africa, or the Florida Keys aren't part of North America.
I get that some folks in the UK like thinking they aren't part of Europe, to the point they completely ruined their economy just to make that point. . .but they're a part of Europe whether they like it or not.
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
I consider Iceland part of Europe, why wouldn't i consider the British isles?
NeighborhoodStroller@reddit
This isn't an oddball question. I spent the summer working in London and remember being surprised when several (local) colleagues asked if I was also planning on travelling "to Europe" while I was there.
ScatterTheReeds@reddit
I would.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
I mean... yeah, it's part of the European continent is it not (it's 300 miles off of France)
Entropy907@reddit
Make Doggerland Great Again
shammy_dammy@reddit
It's like 160 miles off of the Netherlands.
LuckyCharmsRvltion@reddit
Twenty miles, my man. Three-hundred is about the distance from London to Edinburgh in Scotland.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Really? I could've sworn it was further
LuckyCharmsRvltion@reddit
Yeah, it’s been swum quite a few times now. Actually you’ve reminded me of this, don’t know if you liked Top Gear:
https://youtu.be/YVjo6YOT3Zg?si=3cEUjNCKLxN-IdpT
benkatejackwin@reddit
You can see them from each other's coasts.
Vulpix_lover@reddit
Yes I know that
theland_man@reddit
Can you see a landmass 300 miles away from you?
Ghoulish_kitten@reddit
Yeah. What is this responding to???
Intelligent_Pop1173@reddit
Yes. What other continent would it be?
ThingFuture9079@reddit
Yes. The UK is considered part of Europe. It's like asking if a trip to Japan is a trip to Asia.
devilscabinet@reddit
Yes. They are still geographically a part of Europe.
HermioneMarch@reddit
Yes. Is there some other continent im not aware of?
RingGiver@reddit
Yes.
DukeofBraintree918@reddit
Absolutely
skittlesriddles44@reddit
Yes because it’s geographically Europe. But we’re aware it’s not in the EU
deathbychips2@reddit
Yes
asexualrhino@reddit
This just in: UK no longer part of Europe
Inspi@reddit
Yes, the UK is still part of Europe whether they like it or not.
donuttrackme@reddit
Is the UK not in Europe anymore?
TheOwlMarble@reddit
Definitionally so.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
Close enough. The belief that it's not part of Europe is mostly a British fiction that makes them feel special.
ALoungerAtTheClubs@reddit
Why wouldn't we? The British might like to position themselves in opposition to Europe, but it's still European I was of course even part of the EU until recently.
Ginger630@reddit
Yes. It’s still considered part of Europe.
Salty_Dog2917@reddit
Yeah
danjoski@reddit
Yes it’s a region of Europe.
