Why do people in the Uk love Biscoff so much??
Posted by Hello_peopl@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 202 comments
This is very random however I’ve been genuinely wondering why do people find biscoff so tasty and not get tired of it? Most pastries and cakes will have biscoff since its popularity has surged over the years.
I’m not “native” to the uk and came a few years ago and when I fist tried biscoff I was very much addicted to it and the off brand tasted really good too. However i got tired of it pretty quickly and very much can’t eat it again.
What about it do you like so much??
No hate btw just genuinely wondering 🤔
Randerson1980@reddit
I left the UK 16 years ago and don't recall it even being a thing back then.
Doughtnutz@reddit
This year I had Biscoff creme eggs for the first time, they were so good I bought a load more in the follow up half-price easter egg sales.
RainbowRevolver@reddit
You’ve just reminded me of the time a seagull stole a biscoff ice cream from me I had just bought and I’m still salty about
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
Legit don't think I've ever tried it, or even seen it anywhere, I think your perception maybe skewed.
pajamakitten@reddit
It is in every supermarket.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
So are a lot of things I've never seen
pajamakitten@reddit
But it is so ubiquitous that it is hard to miss.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
The same could be said for hemmorhoid cream but you won't find that unless you're looking for in the 'my arse hurts' section. So it stands to reason that someone who doesn't frequent the 'reasons to add sugar to bread aisle' might not come across it?
pajamakitten@reddit
It is in desserts, yogurts, ice cream and even cereal.
Fit-Bedroom-7645@reddit
That's great! I'm not claiming it doesn't exist btw. Just that it doesn't happen to be in any of the places I'm looking at. I'm sure if my diet was deserts, ice cream and cereal, I'd see it.
Sensitive-Ninja3431@reddit
Yeah so when we find something we like.
We don’t exclusively eat just that until we get sick of it.
We’ll have it every now and then just for a treat.
gameofdecimals@reddit
I know why, but my ma'm literally loves it so much
BroodLord1962@reddit
Not for me thanks
GeggingIn@reddit
It is nice. The Belgians like it too.
GnaphaliumUliginosum@reddit
Literally only had it in the Netherlands. I assume the OP is refering to some global urban trend like 'pumpkin spice' or whatever, never seen it round here. The trendy cafes in my rural neck of the woods are more likely to go with 'wild foraged sea buckthorn' or similar if they are trying too hard to be cool.
Majestic_Drop_3004@reddit
In the Netherlands is speculoos, in the UK is biscoff. Where I live (east London) they are literally in every supermarket, both biscuits and spread. Also, there are lots of other stuff like biscoff icecreams, cakes etc.
pointlesstips@reddit
Biscoff is rebranded Lotus Speculoos, a Belgian brand. The Biscoff Spread is what really took off out of Belgium (fun fact: it was actually invented by a random person on a tv show and Lotus decided to run with it). Off the back of that success, the other products like the coffee biscuits and other biscuits became more popular. Lotus rebranded it to Biscoff as it caught on better than Speculoos.
Majestic_Drop_3004@reddit
Still, they're the same thing just a different name on different countries I guess?
pointlesstips@reddit
Yes, except I think the last time I was in Belgium the coffee biscuit was also rebranded to Biscoff there, no longer Speculoos?
R_bazungu@reddit
and it caused national outrage and people wanting to boycott lotus. They are denying our heritage for more mass appeal. Biscoff is an abomination of a name.
pointlesstips@reddit
Gotta love Belgians only getting outraged by a biscuit name.
Majestic_Drop_3004@reddit
Really? Oh well, haven't been to Belgium since 2018 and Netherlands since 2022. Haha!
Bgtobgfu@reddit
Yeah I live abroad and when finally tried Biscoff for the first time I was like ‘oh it’s just speculoos’.
split-tennisball@reddit
Biscoff stuff is everywhere here. There were even biscoff filled Cadburys eggs.
Dhorlin@reddit
And they were delicious. I've still got one left. :)
pepesilvia000@reddit
Its literally in every supermarket
Educational_Try_6105@reddit
it is the crack cocaine of biscuits
CraftyWeeBuggar@reddit
Im not a fan, tastes gross, and its currently everywhere!!
Latte-Addict@reddit
I don't mind the biscuit, it's not a favourite though & I'm not too keen on the spread. Why do you assume everyone loves it?
need_a_poopoo@reddit
I have seen Biscoff on my supermarket shelves. I have no idea what it is. 46 year old Brit.
adymann@reddit
I love the biscuits, but this fad of flavour doesn't do it for me.
whatdoyoumeanalready@reddit
The biscuits are amazing. It really doesn't need to be in everything.
daddy-dj@reddit
True, although it's great as the base on a cheesecake.
tiggergirluk76@reddit
But only the base. Putting the spread in the filling is a step too far
whatdoyoumeanalready@reddit
Facts!
adymann@reddit
Exactly
NecroVelcro@reddit
They're my favourite biscuits but the Biscoff (no, not "Bus off", a̶u̶n̶t̶c̶u̶r̶r̶a̶n̶t̶ autocorrect) ice cream that I tried was really disappointing.
TOASTisawesome@reddit
The tub one is mid but the sticks are nice
Dutch_Slim@reddit
I believe management at the company changed and they decided to license it to everyone!
subtlesocialist@reddit
The ideal way to consume the biscuits it’s getting the pack of two with your coffee after dinner at a restaurant, it’s like a nice little surprise of yum.
HalfAgony-HalfHope@reddit
Same. I went to a restaurant last year and 3 of the desserts were biscoff-flavoured. Just stop with it being everywhere! 😕
shin-chan@reddit
It has ruined the biscuitw for me. They don't do it for me anymore now that they re absolutely everywhere.
horoscopical@reddit
It's the new pulled pork. Something else will come along soon.
lesterbottomley@reddit
What have biscuits got to do with shagging a copper?
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
Yeah i used to love having the biscuits at the hairdressers. It doesnt feel special anymore
hopefullyhelpfulplz@reddit
Personally I don't know anyone who eats it, at least not more than once in a while.
Honest_Specific7922@reddit
They don’t, just like people don’t love matcha. Some people like these things, whilst many others ‘like’ them because it’s trendy.
HumbleUK@reddit
It’s the Dubai one doing my head in. It’s just nut flavour cream but they put all fancy stuff on it
batch1972@reddit
I didn’t think it was that popular. It’s being pushed because it’s owned by the same company that owns Cadbury
wildflower12345678@reddit
I had them once, I prefer malted milk biscuits.
BastardsCryinInnit@reddit
UK is a sucker for a new food.
See: Chorizo, halloumi, salted caramel, miso, kimchi. And hello, the OG: curry.
They aint going nowhere.
Even though i hate Biscoff meself. Cheap hairdresser biscuits.
ThereAndFapAgain2@reddit
I’m 34 years old and have lived here my whole life and never I’ve just had to look up what biscoff is. Literally never had it in my life lol
Andi-anna@reddit
I have a huge sweet tooth but I can't stand biscoff or anything speculaas flavoured.
dirty_papercut@reddit
It's shit, has always been shit. I don't have a swet tooth, some people do. You seemingly do because you claim you were addicted to it. Your answer is somewhere here, I guess.
adamlbrown3@reddit
It's not really a people thing, it's a marketing phase thing. They're incredibly unimaginative and all just copy each other. It was salted caramel for a long time
Ancient-Egg2777@reddit
American here. I can't understand how my people love Oreos. My husband and kids will demolish an overpriced packet in mere hours, while the Biscoff are mine alone. Oh, and the no-bake Biscoff cheesecake?! Yum!
jeanclaudebrowncloud@reddit
The biscuits are just compacted sugar that tastes of air. I dont get it.
Moment_13@reddit
Biscoff is vegan, nut free and produced in a nut free factory, so it's a very common flavour to use.
I don't love the flavour myself but it's a safe flavour to make for a bake sale or bring & share.
drivelhead@reddit
But is it really a treat if an animal hasn't died for it?
Hello_peopl@reddit (OP)
I didn’t know all that, thanks for the insight!!
LahmiaTheVampire@reddit
Same thing happened with salted caramel. Everything was salted caramel a few years back. But mainly because it’s damn tasty.
Magic_mousie@reddit
I like salted caramel but no more so than normal caramel. And if it's over salted it's nasty.
Made the mistake of remarking "this is nice" to my Mum while eating salted caramel and now she buys everything salted caramel she sees for me. Thoughtful, but also, please stop.
adymann@reddit
Shit man, i did the same with toffeefee when I had some at about 14 years old. My mum still get me a huge box each xmas, im 51 next month.
zero_iq@reddit
And before that it was hot chili in everything. Chili chocolate, chili honey, chili crisps, chili vodka, chili olive oil, chili chili chili...
pullingteeths@reddit
And more recently pistachio. And the abomination that is "hot honey"
Mehchu_@reddit
I fucking love pistachio and this made me so happy I really hope at least some of it stays. Even though the whole having to order Dubai chocolate flavour part is cringe inducing for me.
pullingteeths@reddit
Lol same I love the pistachio too but the Dubai chocolate thing is a bit cringe
dan10016@reddit
And Oreo was being forced down everyone's throats a few years back. Ice cream, breakfast cereal, chocolate, pies...
Actual-Morning110@reddit
Immigrant, not British in terms of current twitter definition. One thing i’d miss if i ever have to leave the UK would be biscoff. Its addictive, it always starts with the one, then another, then one more, then wife finds out and scolds me, after negative energy settles one more. Then take a break regret eating like that and it repeats, couldn’t help.
cat757_@reddit
Tbh I’ve loved biscoff since like 2005 and haven’t got bored of it yet, in fact I had a biscoff ice cream today!
Gibber_jab@reddit
Made by froneri now and ice cream not lotus
Jaded-Sir-7927@reddit
You cant understand why people love it but you were addicted to it? Kind of answer your own question. Then through addiction and or greed you had too much.
The_39th_Step@reddit
I do identify with that though. At first I loved it, now I don’t. I do still love Speculoos biscuits abroad with my coffee (the original Biscoff)
Tall-Budget8130@reddit
It tastes like coughing, I do not get the hype.
lynbod@reddit
Honestly? This concept for items of confectionery being "flavours" for other items of confectionery is utterly baffling. There was a time you could go to a cafe and get things like a strawberry milkshake, a decent victoria sponge with real jam and vanilla flavoured whipped cream or 4 basic but good flavours of real ice cream. Now absolutely every milkshake/cake/ice cream has to be Biscoff/Nutella/Kinder Bueno/Bubblegum Millions/Ferrero Roche/Oreo etc.... flavour. Oreo's in particular are one of the worst biscuits invented, a real example of a poor quality American food item being brought over and somehow becoming more popular than the existing, better quality UK options.
It seems to be very popular in Asian operated businesses so maybe it's an Asian thing, but surely British Asians don't just have really poor taste in desserts. Surely they know that other, better options existed before the US started marketing things like Oreos here. So what is the main reason behind it?
It's a really strange phenomenon. Maybe there's some dark and sinister conspiracy behind it all that we need Alan Davies and Caroline Quentin to investigate.
Beautiful_Hour_4744@reddit
Before it got popular a year or 2 ago I'd only ever seen Biscoff biscuits in the biscuit tins of workplace meeting rooms or at training events. I thought they were a designated 'work biscuit'.
CocoRufus@reddit
I made 3 ingredient biscoff cake today, with biscoff topping. Easiest cake ever. 2 eggs, 2 tsp baking powder, jar of biscoff spread zapped in microwave for a minute till its runny , mix together, 30 mins in preheated oven at 180°c, plus another zapped jar for the topping, put in fridge till topping sets, done
Shinyandsmooth8@reddit
It’s because it’s new to you. People aren’t addicted to is as you think. When I first discovered it I suddenly saw it everywhere
R0ckandr0ll_318@reddit
What you don’t? How strange
SpareAdvice8716@reddit
I really dont get it. Much like salted caramel and brioche, but I guess I'm in a minority
KingKhram@reddit
I like it, but I don't eat it that often
Sadiesausage1@reddit
Yeah I’m not sure either and I’m British. Over rated. Why would anyone want a biscuit tasting spread when u could just have a biscuit. Bizarre.
Old-Growth-6233@reddit
Never heard of him
jajay119@reddit
What’s not to like?
unalivexmastree@reddit
Biscoff biscuits used to be really ‘fancy’.
ktitten@reddit
They're now often cheaper than McVities biscuits. When I started to eat them I did feel fancy but now go for them over others because they're cheap
CantaloupeAway7125@reddit
Used to be a treat at hair salon for me with a coffee
stellardecay@reddit
My mum still calls them "hairdresser biscuits" :)
Difficult_Paramedic8@reddit
It used to be a real treat when you got one with your coffee.
RevolutionaryLaw393@reddit
Taste nice 🙏
Zounds90@reddit
It's a fad. Like the Dubai stuff, salted caramel a few years ago etc
R2-Scotia@reddit
Americans too - Delta Airlines served Biscoff cookie on short haul flights and it was a big deal
alferret@reddit
Can't stand the stuff.
deathschemist@reddit
man i just like biscuits in general.
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
Do we?
elbapo@reddit
Yeah im over it now think its just a fad
BG3restart@reddit
I think it's weird that people love it, although it contains palm oil, then rant about how shit Cadbury's chocolate is now that it contains palm oil.
Nosyparker124@reddit
We don’t . I am sick of the shit
IanM50@reddit
Biscoff biscuits became popular for a while and the brand owners went mad and licensed it for everything they could think of.
I'm not at all sure the public are buying that much of it but it is a good blend of cinnamon and other spices for a tasty change.
charlotte_e6643@reddit
in my opinion its good in moderation, ill eat it on toast for a week, then ignore it for half a year, have the odd biscoff donut or something, and repeat
earlyeveningsunset@reddit
My son has a peanut allergy and the other nut butters never really hit that "salty/crunchy/sweet" note for me. While a different flavour profile, I find that crunchy Biscoff spread really does.
Dhorlin@reddit
I buy it as spread, both smooth and crunchy. Lovely jubbly.
sihasihasi@reddit
It's become fashionable over the last few years - it's the new salted caramel. Give it another couple of years and it will be replaced by another flavour.
There's really no mystery, here.
Lowermains@reddit
Eh? Never tasted it and won’t.
zippyzebra1@reddit
Never heard of it so never had it. I asked around and no one else hadheard of it
Mancsn0tLancs@reddit
Bischuh? Nope. Can’t say I’ve seen it in the supermarket. Admittedly, I’ve never looked.
No_Pea-1@reddit
I wish the UK would stock other Lotus products.
Magic_mousie@reddit
I'm listening...what else do they do?
No_Pea-1@reddit
This zebra cake thing is delicious
Magic_mousie@reddit
Well I need that.
Is it a Europe thing? Been to 3 countries over there recently and not seen it.
No_Pea-1@reddit
I always buy them when in Belgium
pointlesstips@reddit
Omg frangipanes!
xxtokyovanityxx@reddit
I love it but it’s so overdone now. Same as matcha, pistachio etc. we need something new
Any-Race258@reddit
Because it is the nectar of the gods.
It's sweet, rich, crunchy and scrumptious. I don't know what's not to like! I do t hate that it's popular because it's a flavour I love.
Fit_Swordfish5248@reddit
We don't do we? I just assumed it was another Oreo marketing ploy to sell a disgusting amount of absolutely "ok" dipping biscuit.
I'm waiting for 'nice' and 'custard cremes' to have a go next.
Hopeful-Climate-3848@reddit
They saw nutella being piled onto everything and decided "we'll have a bit of that".
Fit_Swordfish5248@reddit
I think reeces pieces had a little moment as well. Nutella will always be the reigning champ of slopping shit on desserts though.
Early_Retirement_007@reddit
It is belgian for staters and lotus does make some tasty biscuits. It goes really well with coffee too, just the consistency you need to dip it in your coffee. Fun fact, in Mcdo in Belgium - you get 1 for free with mclatte.
Westsidepipeway@reddit
Not a massive fan but my bf loves it
Sm0keytrip0d@reddit
It's like asking why Oreo is in a lot of things.
It's cheap to produce and tastes nice.
DrZonino2022@reddit
I love it on crumpets
Parker_Borders283739@reddit
I always thought it was kind of bollocks and didn't get why it seemed to be everywhere. I first noticed it in the Netherlands and then we seemed to copy it. I don't really see the appeal.
markusparkus75@reddit
I don’t. Tried it once or twice. Mid.
Single-Aardvark9330@reddit
I don't and I'm stick of seeing it everywhere
dDtaK@reddit
‘Why do you like this biscuit?’ is surely just the type of question AskUK was made for and a fascinating way to spend a Saturday evening.
dereks63@reddit
Have you tried Biscoff ice lollies? Omg they are fantastic
Melonpan78@reddit
It reminds us of elegant city breaks in Europe.
Dmonik-Musik@reddit
It is and ever will be a prison biscuit for me because thats where I first encountered it. Far too sweet t9 be bothering with out here but they were banging inside and livened up the shit brew packs
Chickenhugga@reddit
Biscoff can do one. It’s ruined so many foods
Green_Sprout@reddit
I've told you a million times, stop putting Biscoff in your mashed tatties!
Background_Angle4277@reddit
You were addicted to it so much you got sick of it.... And are wondering why people like it?
Green_Sprout@reddit
I did that to myself when I was a wee bern with Mars Bars, took me a decade to discover I loved them again.
kelleehh@reddit
I find the same with chocolate and hazelnut. It’s everywhere.
ThePeake@reddit
I don't get the hype either, to me Biscoff is the cheap biscuits you get free at the hairdressers.
Strawberry_Spring@reddit
Slightly niche, but it's vegan, so a really easy and tasty way for vegans to get caramel-esque cakes, cheesecake etc
RedPandaCommander24@reddit
Came here to say this - being vegan makes it accessible to more people.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
It's my favourite biscuit with a coffee, has been since the 80s, when I used to have to hunt for them.
HowUtterlyGhastly@reddit
Biscoff is just the incumbent for the title of "Most Fashionable Flavour".
It's predecessors include Salted Caramel and Sriracha.
FloydEGag@reddit
Eh, it’s ok but it’s a bit too ubiquitous now. Pistachio appears to be the new flavour trend so maybe that’ll challenge the mighty Biscoff
Majestic_Drop_3004@reddit
I love biscoff but I don't eat them all the time or with anything and everything. Can live without them. I don't crave them. I'm deeply in love with chocolate and strawberries at the moment.
chrisr3240@reddit
If you spend your life eating war biscuits, like digestives and rich tea, a Biscoff would be like eating sugar for the first time.
Special-Audience-426@reddit
Lots of people just like the taste.
This also a huge amount of people that like what they're told to buy social media because they want to belong. They like Dubai Chocolate and controversial political parties. There will always be sheep.

MissingLink101@reddit
It was created in 1932...
Tirno93@reddit
I found out recently that we have 25 kinds of bitter taste receptors vs 1 kind for sweetness. But sweetness means dopamine, so we want it badly, even though it gets boring quickly. With the rapid development speed of consumer capitalism, we’re always going to go through fads of flavours and sweet things consequently have a very high turnover. We basically say to each other “hey did you know you can add this flavour to your sugar and make it exciting again?” Biscoff is a big one at the moment, seems to have taken the crown from salted caramel. There will always be something, don’t sweat it
krokadog@reddit
You don’t like pre-chewed biscuit paste?
dinkidoo7693@reddit
I can’t stand it. Im glad it’s losing popularity. Currently its pistachio or matcha in everything and I don’t care to much for those either
heyitsed2@reddit
One of the latest food trends I guess, I don't seek it out but I don't turn my nose up at it either...
Former_Elk_7690@reddit
It tastes good . Next
CaptMelonfish@reddit
Personally I prefer Speculoos...
WeeBo2804@reddit
It’s basically the same thing. Speculoos is popular in a lot of Europe. It’s always been available here. But Biscoff the brand basically changed the basic recipe up to be a bit sweeter and milder on the spice. I also think the name speculoos feels a little ‘foreign’ to a lot of people. They’ll happily try biscoff (biscuits for coffee) but would turn their noses up at something that sounds clearly from a different country/culture.
resident_queerdo@reddit
I detest them. Which is why I always have some at home, to offer guests with coffee. Individual packs of two. If I got something I liked, I'd have to keep replacing it all the time.
tuskel373@reddit
It's just a fad tbh. Like salted caramel ca 10 years ago and everything "dubai" (meaning pistachio) right now.
Someone said about biscoff that their marketing team found a way to sell the broken biscuits to other companies and get free advertising, and that's my headcanon now 😄
Legal-Grade-6423@reddit
Dubái isn’t pistachio, it’s the combination of pistachio and kunafa
tuskel373@reddit
I'm sure there's more to it, but at this moment it's become shorthand for pistachio, just look at all the "dubai style" stuff that's available, some of it literally just has a few pistachio pieces and lime colured wrapper 😆
Hazehill@reddit
I'll eat the odd biscuit if somebody offers me one but as a flavouring for things like cheesecake I don't find it to be anything special. The spread is super sweet and not to my taste at all.
I also don't get the obsession with it that some people have. Its just over sweetened ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg.
No_Height_2408@reddit
Just a fad imo
Andries89@reddit
I don't know but as a Belgian it pleases me that you guys seem to like it so much. For reference Biscoff is just a brand name for the actual product, which is Speculoos. Biscoff is the McDonalds of Speculoos products XD
DrMacAndDog@reddit
They don’t. It’s a piece of advertising nonsense.
rad00@reddit
Good question, I think they are popular due to good branding, like Oreoes etc. It doesn’t really stand out from other biscuits but they’ve got specific taste
Chibi_Panda2@reddit
I have serious biscoff fatigue lol
User-1967@reddit
I honestly have no idea, they’re not even nice
Comprehensive_Cut437@reddit
Once in a generation one food prevails overall by saturating the market. I’ve lived through pulled pork, salted caramel, biscoff and await the next fad
Choice_Technology791@reddit
It's a relatively recent thing so people aren't sick of it yet.
stellardecay@reddit
The original speculoos biscuit? Great, fantastic, could happily have them as my only biscuit option. The greasy slime in a jar? Absolutely not. Cursed substance.
Icy_Clue_7235@reddit
Love them!
Magic_mousie@reddit
I'm enjoying the fad, I love biscoff and I'm taking full advantage of all the new things it's in.
It will go away soon, to be replaced by the next flavour of the month.
Bbew_Mot@reddit
I personally find it too sweet, I don't think it's loved by everyone!
Background_Bug1102@reddit
I hate it. Too sweet and oily.
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
It's crazy sweet, I love the biscuits, but the spread and those biscoff filled chocolate far too much.
ilsasta1988@reddit
I don't know, I simply love it. Any biscoff product, from biscuits to spread (which is a staple in my pantry)
ImFamousYoghurt@reddit
It’s cheap to produce and it’s vegan so bakeries very often use it as their default vegan option, not realising every bakery is doing the same
bobsnervous@reddit
We love ginger snaps (biscuits) and biscoff feels like classy ginger snaps. To me anyways.
Hello_peopl@reddit (OP)
I’ve never tried ginger snaps, any brands you recommend??
bobsnervous@reddit
If you can get them, Ringtons all day. They are perfect for dunking in your tea or coffee. Dont double dunk though it's too risky and you might end up trying to salvage chunks of it from the depths of your coffee mug. If not ringtons then id just go for standard Mcvitties (I think that's how you spell it) but homemade or ringtons are the bees knees in my humble opinion, I hope this helps. Enjoy! :))
No_Pea-1@reddit
The basic supermarket branded ones. Like at Sainsbury's.

This seems to be a new thing and not exclusive to the UK. People on the continent seem to like it too, they just call it Speculoos/Spekulatius instead

When it was a novelty that occasionally appeared with a cup of coffee, I quite liked it. But too much of it, its sickly sweet with an unpleasant after taste.

Almost everything it's in is made worse for having it.

It's very overrated imo
BottleGoblin@reddit
They do??
Difficult_Bad1064@reddit
No clue. It's just a biscuit.

Nobody wanted hot honey crisps either but that's what we get.

It's popular outside the UK too.

I've found the majority of pastries don't have biscoff in it so it very easy to avoid it if you're tired of it. It's just a flavour that's trending.
