What's the most frustrating part of owning a car in the UK?

Could be anything — costs, garages, insurance, the MOT system, other drivers. What actually grinds your gears day to day?
I've had nightmares dealing with garages, hence wanted to know if it's a common problem amongst everyone.

The 5 million parking apps needed, even for just local travel
SpatulaWholesale@reddit
5 million parking apps... and nowhere to park near takeaways or restaurants.
DiveCave@reddit
Just popping in for a takeaway? Totally acceptable to just throw it anywhere mate, double yellow, bus stop, busy junction neighbours front room. No one can fault you
OldEquation@reddit
Just put your hazards on to make it legal and you’re good.

Our dependence on them they're so expensive and public transport is not good enough to replace it for a lot of the country.
When you look at insurance, fuel, tax, repairs, maintenance etc, it's really a lot!
PigneySnoo@reddit
I live an easy walk from a train station and a two minutes from a bus stop. A factor in choosing this house was the proximity to public transport.
The train takes ten minutes. It comes every two hours and the times mean that I need to leave two hours before I start work. Coming home, timings mean I'd arrive home 1 hour 45 minutes after I finish with.
The bus comes more regularly, every 30 minutes. But, it takes 50 minutes to reach the only destination and then I have a 40 minute walk to work. Assuming I leave my house exactly 5 minutes before the bus is due, the journey time is 1 hour 35 minutes each way.
Work is a 20 minute drive away. I drive.
Illustrious-Engine23@reddit
Exactly.
Compare this to other major eastern european or scandanavian countries, I bet the public transport option will be much better.
algypan@reddit
Roads are shit, road tax is a fucking joke and shit garages ripping people off by either charging too much, don't do the work required/ asked for or do a piss poor job of it.
paulg-22@reddit
The fact that modern cars are becoming all but unrepairable.
Complex proprietary computer systems all linked together and to the physical bits of the car and requiring connections to a manufacturer’s server for routine maintenance.
Doubt very much that today’s cars will be future restoration projects.

Potholes
No_Donkey_3761@reddit
I know the location of every pothole on the way to work (dont we all) so it's a case of trying to dodge them or slowing down enough to do minimal damage whilst watching you dont get rear ended because there are so many oblivious auto pilot drivers up my bum.
Good_Ad_1386@reddit
I wish I knew where all the potholes are on the way to our local town, but they seem to appear between journeys. Once a week shopping trips are fraught (and cost in £wheels).
LeTrolleur@reddit
Yeah our county council has systematically ruined traffic in our county over a period of 20 years.
They unnecessarily removed roundabouts in favour of crossroads with traffic lights, they have let potholes get out of control, they closed rat runs by putting planters in the way, and they repeatedly refused to build a ring road which is the one thing that would reduce traffic through the town, especially when a certain bridge is closed due to bad weather.
10 points if you guess the council, and a brucey bonus if you can guess the political party in charge.
Goats_Are_Funny@reddit
What's bad about closing rat runs?
LeTrolleur@reddit
It's more the way they did it, the planters are an eyesore because they're not tended to buy the council, and they can be easily moved if someone is motivated enough too.
Good_Ad_1386@reddit
Closing rat runs inevitably increases traffic elsewhere.
Original-Material301@reddit
Yup.
And the really weird, piss poor road surface quality on some of our A roads and motorways.

Pothole + pay for repairs then.. car written off in a no-claim accident that still raises your insurance costs. Happened to me this year already.
itsonlymelee@reddit
Yeah, it’s got to be the state of the roads.
DollySheep32@reddit
This. I have driven on rural country roads that are better surfaced and maintaind than in my parents' bougie town with insane council tax.
SpatulaWholesale@reddit
I hate narrow country roads, and unfortunately they're all over where I live.
Blind turns, people driving way too fast, potholes, ditches... having to reverse way too far to find a passing spot.
Some people love country roads. I hate them. HATE THEM. I wish map apps had an "avoid country roads" button. I'll happily drive a longer distance to avoid them.
Belle_TainSummer@reddit
The sour-faced middle aged women who rally their own cars around the carpark at full tilt, because "they'll have to get out of my way" and inevitably smack into something then start screaming about how you damaged their car, despite you being stationary and them racing it towards you expecting you to teleport away. It is always a sour faced, middle aged woman, with a sneer permanently etched into her face.
pburgess22@reddit
The same can be applied to school run drivers. No one on the road more aggressive than a mum/dad in a minivan/Chelsea tractor on the school run.
_Nefarium@reddit
My mum is like this, digital driver either accelerating or braking, can't corner smoothly - twiches the wheel hard over and back to corner, hands at 11 and 1, barely sees over the wheel. It's a miracle she's not hit anything in the past 20years, I think it's because everyone sees a blue golf careering all over the road and keeps well back.
I refuse to get in a car with her.

marc512@reddit
For me it's the depreciation value on the stupidest things. Car has a tiny stone chip? "I'll take it for £1000 less" or in we buy any are you're hit with a £8k car valuation drop because they see micro scratches that can only be seen under a microscope and lighting at a specific angle.
Rob_Cake@reddit
So just buy cars with chips in?
marc512@reddit
Depends on the purpose of the car and price. Over £20k? Sure I'll try and haggle. £3000 car with 100k miles? A stone chip or scratch won't bother me.
Rob_Cake@reddit
Don't think you're getting it
Bossman_Mike@reddit
I shit ye not, I know someone who took their old car in for part-exchange on a new one, and while he was inside chatting to the salesman some helmet crashed into the old car and drove off.
Dependent-Ganache-77@reddit
Car size inflation 🫥
fussyfella@reddit
For me it is definitely the garages - both when you buy and when you have vehicles repaired and serviced.
It is not as simple as them all being bad, or even one marque being better than another, it really comes down to the individual outlet. Some are excellent, professional and helpful, some are just out to rip you off and patronise you, others are basically incompetent. It would not be so bad if there were more proper competition, but to keep warranties you are more or less stuck with a tied group of outlets and that is often just one company per region.
Still it works both ways sometimes: my wife got a load of extras on a car because the salesman was too busy looking at her tits and made a mistake on his order form. When it was delivered he tried to charge her for them, of course she said Foxtrot Oscar. That garage had go so bad the car was never serviced there but taken to one from a different dealer network (but the same marque) near where she worked.
TremendousCustard@reddit
Parking spaces being too small.
The size hasn't changed since the 70s but cars have gotten wider.
I have hips and trying to squeeze in if someone parks a smidge too close while holding the door in a way that doesn't touch the other car is a pissing nightmare. Why do we make this so difficult?
TSC-99@reddit
Driving long distances. Our roads aren’t good enough to cope with the amount of traffic. We need more lanes and we need HGVs to be restricted to one lane instead of overtaking something ridiculously slow for hardly any gain.
HumbleUK@reddit
The roads are actually super bad
bentleybasher@reddit
Scummy garages. Never been to an honest one yet.
Insideout_Ink_Demon@reddit
Not so much UK specific, but the bility to repir and service yourself.
I had a diesel. Poor choice for my type of driving, which is mostly mostly short runs. The exhaust would keep getting clogged up and I'd get a warning on the dash. Apparently I should have regularly given it a "good run" and the exhaust would "regen" itself.
Thing is, once that engine light was on, it would refuse to regen. So you'd have to pay for someone to log on to your car's computer and regen it for you (which was basically rag the balls out your car while telling the computer its ok to regen now).
Another one, I need a service/ oil change etc? Get a nice warning on my dash that I have to dismiss every tme I get in the car. If i change that oil myself, will the warning stop? Hell no, again I need to pay someone to hook up to my cars computer and say the oil has been changed.

No. Download the KnowYourCar app. You get a notification as soon as the garage enter it.
Bossman_Mike@reddit
You sometimes see it's failed for something very minor which they fixed there and then, re-ran the test and it passed.
I've had that before for things like a dead brakelight bulb or worn wiper blades. The place I use lets you pre-approve all repairs up to £50 without them calling you to confirm.

No_Donkey_3761@reddit
Yeah road tax has really started to annoy me, I pay over £200 a year for my 1999 1.3 just because it predates the new rules for paying vs emissions and not engine size.
I'm sure of the new rules were applied to my engine it would be like what? £35 a year?
below-belt-money@reddit
Went to France recently, fuel was about 20% more expensive! The roads are so much better though
Ornery-Wasabi-1018@reddit
Size of average car vs size of average parking space (and garage)
JohnConstantinedrink@reddit
In the past few weeks I have cleared my garage out and now park the car in it, it’s a Mokka X so not big and the driving I have to do to try and fit the car in the garage.
Half way through, I have to turn the wing mirrors in otherwise it won’t fit through the garage door.
Then after the car is in the garage, I have to bend my body in all sorts of positions to try and get out as the door barely has enough room to open.
This takes me about 10 minutes to reverse the car in the garage.
I actually don’t know why I do it. My car is not desirable for a thief, too boring for a joyrider and I have a driveway that can fit 4 cars on (5 at a push) so I’m not short of space.

Parking.
I live in London and parking is a nightmare. It’s either extortionate prices or I simple can’t find a spot to park my car.
V65Pilot@reddit
There are parking places in London that make more per hour than some people earn.
spunkkyy@reddit

louilondon@reddit

Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
I have given up driving due to insurance. My car just touched someone else's in a supermarket car park, the damage to her paintwork was only just visible, there was no dent but she had a full respray on my insurance. When I got quotes for the next year it had gone up from about £70 a month to £180.
Frugal500@reddit
The car just touched someone else’s, or you scratched someone else’s car and now the insurance is looking to cover the cost of that?
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
"the damage to her paintwork was only just visible" A full respray was unnecessary and bumping up my premium to a point where I can't afford to drive anymore is a high price to pay for such a minor accident.
Frugal500@reddit
You’ve hit her car. Even if it’s barely visible aesthetics aside that’s a hit in resale value due to you
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
Get a life junior
Frugal500@reddit
It does though. I’d get my car resprayed to maintain value. Onus is on you not to hit it…
Opening_Nose_2347@reddit
That is not the point, I expect to be penalised for my transgression but not for it to be so high that I have to stop driving. I have been driving for 40 years and never had an accident. On the other hand pulling out of a parking space once, another driver was doing about 70 in a residential road with a bend in it so he was not visible as pulled out; he damn near killed me and wrote off my car. I had no witnesses or any proof, so he got clean away with it and I got nothing from my insurance.
I pay my insurance in order that people can get their car fixed if I hit them, I have paid for that woman's respray a hundred times over in 40 years.
Not that you are concerned with morality, it is obvious that you are just a toxic.
Frugal500@reddit
Well yeah I mean the insurance hike sucks I get that but my issue was more your kind of “I barely hit it” and “they shouldn’t make such a big deal out of me hitting their car”. It is mad that they get to penalise you for so long for a claim

Honesty for me it’s been the lack of parking that home/house builders need to install.
It all revolves around profit.
Why is there no parking? (predators like CPM blossom with shitty practices).
BigFloofRabbit@reddit
Exacerbated by the number of households that have two or more cars. Sadly, more parking availability leads to more cars which means lack of parking availability again.
HowUtterlyGhastly@reddit
Yep this is the inherent problem with expanding capacity, or making use of existing resources more efficiently.
Usage will always expand to fill the capacity that is available.
Exciting_Top_9442@reddit
The estate I live in has ground level covered parking. It works well except the security gates often break apparently.
I’m just advocating for more parking and less housing if that’s the way point.
Yes I also want more houses.
Also I want more green spaces.
I also want to be rich!
BigFloofRabbit@reddit
Understandable. Most of England is at the point of people to land ratio that lower and lower-middle income people cannot really afford to have a house with a garden and a driveway.
My observation to the solution to that in expensive parts of the world is usually high-rise blocks with underground parking.
But I have a feeling British people ain't gonna like that.
JoeBagadonut@reddit
I live on a new build estate and there was a fire at one of the nearby houses. Fire engine struggled to reach it initially because the lack of spaces has led to many residents just parking in the road.

Drivers were much worse in South Africa where I lived for 13 years but it's genuinely surprising that road infrastructure is so much worse in this country than it is in South Africa, How is it possible that a country like South Africa who can't even keep the lights on (Electrical power outages are frequent, aka Loadshedding) builds and maintains their roads and highways to a higher standard than they can here 😭

Plus_Pangolin_8924@reddit
That’s by design. Councils twist developers arms to limit parking for all. This weird idea that they think we have a functioning public transport network in the country! My local council rejected a 300 building development because the bigger houses could park 3 cars in the drive.
Powerage07@reddit
I can't imagine they need must twisting, i always assumed more parking = less houses = less £££ for the developers but good point on councils thinking towards public transport though

Fantastic-Option-260@reddit
For me it’s “complexity”.
I live quite a hectic life and each extra rule or requirement for Cars makes sense in isolation, but starts to add up collectively (I wish all government depts had a rule that for every new bit of admin they give to the public they have to remove one).
Roughly counting for my car:
- VED (“road tax”)
- MOT
- Service schedule
- Insurance
- Extra insurance for any trip to Europe etc (+ bits like headlight deflectors, warning triangles etc)
- The variety of congestion/emission zones round the country
- The variety of anpr parking apps and rules
-Photo card licence renewal
- council Parking permits for parking in your street
- tip permits if you want to use our local tip (not everyone requires these)
In isolation they’re all tiny and fine, but my biggest frustration when balancing every other bit of admin in my life. I just wish it could all be simpler.
