Retractable speed bump

The speed is normally flush with the road but if vehicles approach at a speed above the limit for that road the speed bump raises Quickly just before the car passes over it.
And a digital sign just ahead flashes, "SLOW DOWN NEXT TIME!"
Towing companies and private repair garages can bid to post adverts.
Portion of the money for repairs goes back to the community for betterment. (Not the local municipality)

Seen something like that in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science magazine decades ago. Instead of a bump up, the plate lowered into a trough effecting a serious bump.

Yeah, we have one of those in my town. From what I heard it is rather much maintenace to keep it functionall. Lots of debris collect in it. And it require a drainage pump to keep if dry.
Since we only have one i guess they did not really like em.
If you keep the speed, you can pass it rather smoothly..and if you exceed, you get the same feeling as if running over a really deep pot hole at too high speed.

I don't think we really need that. A wide bump (a hump) is negligible at the speed limit, but at 5 or 10 above is a noticeable jolt, and at higher speeds can launch a car in the air (or so it feels).
LifeIsProbablyMadeUp@reddit
City put in some of those. But they made em a bit too sharp. There's 2 in a row on a 40 mph zone and if you hit em at 40 you're gonna feel it. Have to be doing 30 at most.
Just. Shitty. There's a bunch of scrapes on em too.
RunningAtTheMouth@reddit
They belong on 25mph roadways. That's where they're most effective.
Through roads with higher limits are not good candidates for them. If speed needs to be managed, other road design features can be more effective.

Are you saying the speed bumb would cause the car to wreck? You want to get people to slow down by causing accidents? Are you trying make driving less safe?
beachbum818@reddit
Then it crashes out of control and everyone gets sued. Might as well have the tire spikes come up from the road.
ArkuhTheNinth@reddit
We'd first have to figure out as a society how to correctly make static speed umps that don't destroy your car when you're already going 10 under.
Odd-Respond-4267@reddit
Speed humps. Bigger softer bumps, at slow speed like a small hill, at high speed more like a jump ramp.
ArkuhTheNinth@reddit
I was being a little dramatic but yeah I know about these. Only really nice areas use them unfortunately.
glitterfaust@reddit
How are speed bumps ruining your car? Is it lowered?
ArkuhTheNinth@reddit
One of my previous cars was an older sedan. I entered a parking lot I had been in a thousand time before. They put in new bumps, didn't paint them, and I hit it doing about 15 (it was the entryway from a major road so coming in from the left turn) and it destroyed a shock/strut on one side.
tony22233@reddit
That would break my car hard.
glitterfaust@reddit
That’s why you don’t speed

SLOW DOWN NEXT TIME
TinyTailTulip@reddit
This is less traffic control more public shaming but I kinda love it
Cloudycloud47x2@reddit (OP)
The public shaming comes from the automatically uploaded videos of the drivers expression to a dedicated youtube channel #SpeedBumpFollies

Are you familiar with r/11foot8 perchance? Seems right up your alley
popky1@reddit
Stuff like this exists but it’s magnitudes more expensive than a tube of concrete and much less reliable.
Lopsided_Flight_2986@reddit
These exists but they don’t go up they go down so the tire falls into a shallow pit like a temporary pot hole.
PhD77777@reddit
Awesome idea! Also snap a picture a post it to Reddit.
that_dutch_dude@reddit
We used to have a bunch of those but they work in reverse. They are normal speed bumps made from metal and have shock absorbers and slrings inside so the slower you go over them the more it can go down and the less you feel it. The faster you go the more you get launched of it.

They exist.
timwtingle@reddit
This could damage emergency vehicles.
174wrestler@reddit
They'd just put the same preemption receiver like they have at stop lights, so when an emergency vehicle comes up, it always stays retracted.
TheCoffeeGuy13@reddit
These are in place in Europe and only active when cars are detected at above the speed limit.
igotshadowbaned@reddit
There would need to be additional signs that properly convey the potential risks of the popup speed bump
TwoWarm700@reddit
I know of a practical, cost effective method for implementing this

Non-newtonian fluids, amiright?
TwoWarm700@reddit
Correct
iKnowRobbie@reddit
Rubber ballast material with cornstarch and water... ::holds hand out:: paycheck please!
beastpilot@reddit
If the point is damage, why not just have spikes blow out all of the tires?
