Do you actually go to the ice cream vans that drive around?

There’s one daily in my housing estate in even vaguely nice weather and no one ever uses it that i see. Noisy bloody thing and the answer i always hear is “no we have ice cream at home!” I just wondered if this is an unpopular opinion?
Western_Sort501@reddit
Used to go to the one that parked near my daughters primary school at pick up plus if I have caught him driving around.
Where I used to live used to hear it in winter guessing it wasn't selling just ice cream.
your-mum-joke@reddit
Fuck me is this what the worlds come to when a 20 second jingle from an ice cream van is considered a noise problem?
There's complaing and then there's people like this who have no joy left. What a shame.
NecroVelcro@reddit
The legal duration of an ice cream van chime is 12 seconds at a time: the law would consider 20 seconds a noise problem.
I'm not saying that any of them are relevant in the OP's case but several neurological conditions can cause severe sound sensitivity. A 20 seconds jingle that you don't give a shit about would be distressing or even painful to many others.
your-mum-joke@reddit
Fuck me
Asher-D@reddit
It lasts far longer than 20 seconds because they play it on repeat and it's as loud as a siren, which a siren is fine, someone's having an emergency, but an ice cream jingle? There's no emergency and it now my kid is upset.
Master-Trick2850@reddit
People post on this sub complaining about children shouting and playing outside, it definitely is what this world has come to.
Puzzleheaded_Drink76@reddit
Not when you are at home with a functioning freezer. Possibly when out and about.
millimolli14@reddit
Everyone uses it where we are, line of kids waiting on the pavement and adults too
Asher-D@reddit
They do it to upset the kids so you'll give in and buy some ice cream. At least I'm convinced that's why they do it.
ross-dirext-words137@reddit
I mean if one turned up and I had cloths and shoes on. Which is about 20% if the time when at home. I probably would see how much a 99 is now. Probably £5
Rocky-bar@reddit
As soon as I hear the tune I start salivating, isn't that strange? So yes I buy them.
popsy13@reddit
I do occasionally, used to have the neighbour (who couldn’t open her front door) hanging out of her window putting orders in. Thankfully she’s moved

Downvoted why? I answered the question
Peppy_Tomato@reddit
Why: Gibe on the neighbour.
popsy13@reddit
Cause she was a bloody nightmare! Ever been woken up to Whitney Houston’s at 4am?
NoodleDoodlesocks@reddit
Sometimes, yeah. It's good ice cream.
Regular_Put_2266@reddit
Absolutely not! If you are a fun of icecreams and happen to be in London, go to Amorino.. authentic Italian icecream. Have a look at pictures on google to see what true “gelato” looks like! 😇
BG3restart@reddit
I do when I hear it. I don't have ice cream at home because I have no self control and would just eat it in one sitting, so the occasional 99 from the van is a rare treat.
APenguinEm@reddit
I used to as a kid, but as I got older I developed lactose intolerance. Icecream is a no-go for me. I will occasionally buy an ice lolly on a hot day though
ParsleyChops@reddit
No I hate them and had a phobia of them in my twenties. I used to walk home from work along a road which turned out to be part of the route of an ice cream van, when I heard it getting close I would get hysterical and run down the road crying 😂 I’m almost over it now but I still can’t get close to one
Super-Craig@reddit
My family could never afford the expense when I was younger, but I used to watch other children buy things from it.
As an adult, I've bought an ice cream cone from such a van once for one my sons on a rare beach outing.
Nym_Nightingale@reddit
Yes, my husband was livid the other day because you could hear it in the area, but didn't drive up our street. Had the kid put on shoes and everything
Barbora1519@reddit
Know how you feel . Once we got into our car and gave chase. We weren’t sure where the sound was coming from and it was really frustrating as we were just driving around and eventually gave up 😁
Lessarocks@reddit
Not where I am. We have a corner shop at the top of the road that sells ice cream and three supermarkets within five minutes walk. Despite that, that we have an ice cream van that drives down our cul de sac every week, plays its chimes and drives off again. It doesn’t stop. If I wanted to buy something from it, there wouldn’t be time to get my shoes on and get out there. It’s bizarre.
Barbora1519@reddit
I live in a quiet cul-de-sac and when the ice cream man comes there are always people with kids who will go and get one . And there is also always me and my partner :) .
Spottyjamie@reddit
Yeah as it parks 5 seconds from my house
Costs me a bloody fortune lol
ScientistJo@reddit
We used ours, and there was usually about 3 or 4 kids bought at the same spot that we did, but it doesn't come round any more. Last seen before Covid.
But then again, if they are now charging £4.00 for a 99 with sprinkles, I probably wouldn't use it if it did come back.
DeadBallDescendant@reddit
When I was a lad, Mr Suskas used to sell cigs, which was a godsend.
RetiredFromIT@reddit
I always have ice-cream in my freezer, and friends/visitors are welcome to some.
But...
When I have a certain group of close friends round and an ice cream van stops in the street, we can't resist going outside and buying one.
Plenty of kids in the queue, too, so the guys are making money, still.
BurkesRoad@reddit
I would, if we had one. I'm in a small village which has nothing...no shop, no pub... nothing.
PKblaze@reddit
There's usually one at the park near where we live. Seems like it takes in a fortune on the good days. Cone ice cream and topping ranges between 2-3 quid so it's not terrible compared to some prices I've seen
Aggravating-Delay792@reddit
Not gone to an ice cream van in over 12 years , don't see the point any more but if I saw one pitched up somewhere like a park or gardens to sit in then yes I would. But the funny thing is about the ones that drive around are always round come rain or shine even Christmas day
poxelsaiyuri@reddit
No but I’m lactose intolerant, we got the ninja soft serve ice cream maker so I can finally have ice cream cones again
Positive-Mud-11@reddit (OP)
Ohhh i was looking at that - is it worth it?
poxelsaiyuri@reddit
I like it, have done both vanilla icecream and made various fruity ones, all where much nicer than the shop brought vegan ones im limited to (does mean I don’t want to buy shop icecream now as they pale in comparison)
swoticus@reddit
Is there actually dairy in the ice cream from the vans? I thought it was like the "meat" in Richmond's sausages.
poxelsaiyuri@reddit
There’s enough to set of my lactose intolerance or at least was 10 years ago I cut out dairy from my diet maybe they have changed
IdioticMutterings@reddit
My local ice cream van is a front for marijuana deliveries.
Everyone knows it, even the police, yet somehow, he gets away with it.
swoticus@reddit
I've seen this joke pop up for years and I'm never entirely sure if it's actually a joke or real
h00dman@reddit
You'll never meet someone who's bought drugs from an ice cream van, only people who've been told by others, who will in turn also have been told by others.
Heyo91@reddit
It's not a joke.
Dasy2k1@reddit
Yeh at least one near me is, they do sell good ice cream too... And don't sell anything dodgy to kids so they tend to be left alone....
One of my mates who smokes went out to it once, handed over a 20 and walked away with a cone with no change.... Didn't quite clock what was going on untill he had eaten the ice cream and pulled the baggie out of the cone!
sihasihasi@reddit
No absolutely nobody does. They just drive around and play music, for the fun of it
FinalEdit@reddit
Yeah exactly. Mine does it to start a mini rave set to a plinky version of Popeye the Sailor Man.
We all go out there and ask for ice creams but he gets pissed off and starts throwing chess pieces at us.
Odd-Accident-3287@reddit
I tell my son they have run out wen they play music it’s literally bedtime anyway when they come in summer
Informal-Intern-8672@reddit
I did, until he ran over my daughter.
loveswimmingpools@reddit
We live in the middle of nowhere and have a lovely ice cream van that slows down as he goes past our few houses in case we're gardening and want an ice cream. It's much appreciated.
ZealousidealPlate241@reddit
One of my neighbours buys ice creams every time the van comes round. Mental.

OkAdhesiveness166@reddit
Any time I hear the one near us, both the kids and I are out the front door faster than a bolt of lightning. Nothing beats a 99 flaks
CunningOctopus@reddit
How much does yours cost? I last had one 3 years ago as I regarded £3.50 as too much.
spiderplant94@reddit
My local is £2.50, £2 without a flake
CunningOctopus@reddit
Now I'd pay that! I walked out of the house to buy 2 with a £5 note in my hand and was nearly very embarrassed, but luckily had £2 in my pocket.
yolo_snail@reddit
Surely a 100 flake beats it
jovial_rebel@reddit
Only just

I think they have fixed routes, and there’s some kind of agreement with the council on who goes where, in order to give everyone a chance to get to the good spots, while also serving less visited areas.
Our local park has at least 4 different vans that come visit, but they’re never there at the same time.
For more info on the drugs I recommend the Ice Cream Wars documentary on iPlayer.

Only if my husband’s home as he likes a 99 with a flake. I’m lactose intolerant so if I’, on my own, it’s a no.
Federal-Mortgage7490@reddit
not really, only reason is the price. Not saying they are making outrageous profits but I cannot justify the price. Bit like with pubs and beer, 75% cheaper to have at home. I suppose the absence of customers like me compounds the problem for them so they have to charge more to make any profit which further puts people off and so it self perpetuates.
gilesey11@reddit
Only if you have a van that massively overprices everything. You wouldn’t get anywhere near what I get from the van that stops outside my house for the same price from anywhere else, even the local own brand supermarket ice cream.
elevatedupward@reddit
Back in the 70s tye ice cream van was the source of the ice cream we had at home.
When she heard the music my mum would send me out with a bowl to get 4 scoops which she'd put in the wee fridge freezer box for pudding.
We've never been to the van that drives round our way now - I think he makes his money selling sweets* to students.
*Could be "sweets".
jovial_rebel@reddit
I went to the ice cream van yesterday that was very conveniently parked outside once of the main entrances to the woods, got three ice cream cones for my two kids and me, ith kids had flakes, I did not. My man charged me £14 fucking quid. £4 for cone and an extra £1 for half a flake bar. WTF happened.
Squishwhale@reddit
The one that drives around by me does a huge whippy with flake, sauce and sprinkles for 2 quid. Absolutely banging.
Real-Tired-Mama@reddit
My son gets one on a Friday when it’s going round xxx
hotchy1@reddit
If we had one id be right out to it.
RafRafRafRaf@reddit
My local one certainly also sells drugs but he’ll do you a perfectly good cone with flake if you ask for one. Oooh. Or an oyster.
catsnstuff17@reddit
Ours is popular!
Anxious_wank@reddit
I live where a family do ice cream vans. One goes out all year around selling "ice cream", the others start around April.
I get on alright with them, so he'll tell me how the season is, covid was shit obviously, but he reckons since covid people aren't buying ice cream as much from the vans and their costs keep going up.
omg_daisy@reddit
I live next door to a primary school and when it's warm our ice cream man parks outside and most of the parents and children get a cone. If I'm out with the dog I go too but sometimes the queue is really long lol
Cantona-Eric-7@reddit
Only when I need some drugs
Nameisnotmine@reddit
Yes. I love soft serve and will buy some anytime I. An. Local can had clocked on and will park outside my house
NagromNitsuj@reddit
Yep, well in 1986 I did. Not so much now.
Relevant_Natural3471@reddit
I like zZapp ice creams and it's the only place you can get them (or, well, the 'wazzzaaa' knock offs sometimes)
WalkerJoggerSprinter@reddit
Yes, people like to get their "ice cream" all year round
TheRegularBelt@reddit
I used to when I was in school. Beats any home ice-cream tubs.
More-Yard5742@reddit
Good doco on iPlayer about ice cream van wars in Glasgow in the 80s. Savage but a good watch
Alone_Improvement735@reddit
Yes, but not everytime
bishibashi@reddit
I live opposite a park and near a primary school, the one that visits is very popular when the sun’s out.
Still, if yours genuinely never gets any customers it might be selling drugs not ice cream, so there’s a cherry thought.
Miserable-Ad7835@reddit
Only for drugs
Decard_Pain@reddit
Indeed I do
