What fan will keep me from perishing in the summer?
Posted by Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 169 comments
I'll try and keep this as brief but detailed as possible, I suffer tremendously from heat and I can't tolerate it whatsoever. I sleep with a fan on every single night, all night long, all year long. Even if it's snowing outside, I just can't survive without it.
that being said, I live in the UK and the summers here are a form of torture, I'm looking for a fan that actually blows cool air at me and will last long. I don't mind investing in a fan that has a bit of a higher price point, I just need something effective. At the moment I have a random fan that I found in our attic many years ago and while it is phenomenal generally, I'm just looking for something a bit better. any suggestions are seriously appreciated
ServerLost@reddit
Get a dehumidifier, it's the humidity that kills you here not just the heat.
Alternative_Lake_512@reddit
We've got a portable AC unit. Thing has paid for itself last few years. Not stupid loud that you can't sleep with it on.
CaptainFickle@reddit
I've looked at these and I was wondering how efficient they actually are, given you have to have a window open for the extractor pipe. Doesn't that just let hot air back in?
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Which one is it if you don't mind me asking?
UnderwaterMoose2020@reddit
We use a Meaco fan, like the Meaco 10. Which is quiet and has a remote control. But for a heatwave you might need an aircon as others have suggested.

Brilliant bit of kit
JamieEC@reddit
thats a brill price for 9000BTU!

We have a daewoo air con unit we use during the summer months. We put it on about half an hour before going to bed & when we enter the bedroom its like being inside a fridge. Its amazing! Bought it for about £150 on Amazon a couple of yrs ago. Better than any fan we've ever tried.
huangcjz@reddit
I use The Wirecutter’s reviews. I think all of the fans they test are available in the U.K. as well - I got their Vornado recommendation, which works well. https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-fan/
BlackStarDream@reddit
I bought a remote-controlled circular fan bulb for my living room and a pack of adapters to change from B22 to E27 and it's still perfect.
Getting another fan bulb for my bedroom this year it worked that well. Not even needed to change it back because it's great as a colour changing and dimming bulb as well.
Vladamir_pootinn@reddit
You could just go to Holland and Barrett and get a few man-up pills?

Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)

DarthScabies@reddit
We've got a Meaco fan. They call them "air circulators" but the still work pretty well.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
I actually ended up ordering this one last night, I hope it's as good as everyone says it is!
DarthScabies@reddit
Can't fault them. And they are really quiet as well.
potato_face1234@reddit
You have a fan which is phenomenal, but want one that is more phenomenal? Fans just blow the air in the room, they don't cool it.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Its an old fan that blows air and hasn't broken down yet despite me using it daily. That's what makes it phenomenal. I wanted a suggestion for something that works well for other people, because theres always a better option, and I got plenty of those. Don't get what's confusing you about that
BigMasterDingDong@reddit
I mean it’s not going to replace an AC, but I LOVE my Meaco! If it has to be a fan… that’s what I’m going for!
SeaworthinessNeat516@reddit
This is useful. I'd researched things a bit and came to this conclusion. Not bought the bullet yet but probably will soon before everyone is rushing to get one.
BigMasterDingDong@reddit
You won’t regret it, I went with the 1056 in case that helps b
SeaworthinessNeat516@reddit
Cheers. That did seem to be the one I was looking at. 50 quid dearer for the pedestal version tho
BigMasterDingDong@reddit
Didn’t realise it was so much more, but I wouldn’t hesitate if it’s anything like the non-pedestal version. I got mine from John Lewis for the guarantee.
SeaworthinessNeat516@reddit
Good idea! Bonds it is!
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Thank you this is reassuring, a couple of other people have recommended this one too
BigMasterDingDong@reddit
Honestly, they’re amazing. I have a 1056, and its really changed my expectations for what I want in a fan lol
BloodyCuts@reddit
Meaco fans are top drawer. We also have a Meaco portable A/C too now and it works really well.
tumblingnebulas@reddit
Yes! I've had one for six years now and it's still going strong. It's the only one I've found that is still quietish at high speeds.
dennis3282@reddit
I sleep with a fan year round too. I like the noise and the breeze.
A fan won't save you from seriously hot nights though. You need an air conditioning unit for that. They are a game changer.
gamergrid@reddit
Can I be your fan? 🥁
nali_cow@reddit
So you can blow them, right?
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Thank you this is helpful, which one is it that you use?
dennis3282@reddit
I got mine about 4 years ago, I think it has been discontinued. But it was a basic one from B&Q.
natej82@reddit
Try sleeping naked with no sheets and fan on you, I actually get too cold even on the hottest nights this way
fussyfella@reddit
Don't bother with a fan, all they do is move warm air around. Just go and get a standalone air conditioning unit, it will change your summer life. Make sure you can stick the tube out of a window easily and job done. Buy it now before the prices get hiked in the first heatwave.
Be warned though, after a while, you will probably install a fixed unit for convenience and never go back.
B_BB@reddit
B&Q, £50. Industrial fan. It saved me last year. So goooooood
littlebird2446@reddit
I also suffer in the heat. A decent £30 fan from Argos is wonderful.
I feel like people just don’t use their heads. Have the fan on your bedside table. Facing at your body. Not oscillating. Like that will literally be cool air blasting at your bod because it’s so close to you. If you have it on a chest of drawers on the opposite side of the room of course the air doesn’t feel cold when it hits you.
TheLittleSquire@reddit
Get yourself a Dyson airblade, they're phenomenal
HugsandHate@reddit
I too suffer the heat.
Might I make a suggestion, for peace of mind.
Get a backup. Stash it away somewhere.
I have 2 in the fear that if the one I'm using dies during a heatwave. I'm screwed.
Food for thought.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Really good point and also kinda nice to know that im not the only one with these fears
HugsandHate@reddit
You aren't the only one.
I got severe heat stroke years ago. And I swear it gave me PTSD or something.
I absolutely dread the heat.
Good luck. Keep cool.
^(x)
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
That's rough and it's understandable why you feel this way, may this summer be kind to you. Wish you the best
HugsandHate@reddit
Thank you.
Same to you.
Have a hug.

Apprehensive_Room29@reddit
I hate the heat too, this tip has saved me in countless summers now;
Open a window in the room you want to cool. Open a window in another room where there is the ability for air to pass between the two rooms. Point a fan OUTSIDE from at least 1m away from the window, ideally 2m.
As long as the air outside is cooler than the inside, you will cool the room by the fan pushing hot air out, and the other window drawing the cooler air in from the outside.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
You're an absolute creative genius
Apprehensive_Room29@reddit
I can't claim credit for it, but I have optimised it ;D
jack_hudson2001@reddit
ive been in the uk for 10 years and havent died from the heat...
water cooler fans are ok, i use 2 of them.
only recently i bought a portable air con unit, decent and didnt break the bank.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
I dont know how you're possibly surviving it, because last year alone was so bad that it drove me into literal depression by Mid May, and that wasn't even summer yet
jack_hudson2001@reddit
really.... not sure its "hot" when over 30 deg which is rare usually.
last year i do recalled it was hot for a few days straight...
have 2x water cooler fan units i use during the day, and open the window at night.
mudlouse@reddit
https://amzn.eu/d/0elPlmIh
Used a couple of these bad boys in the bedroom in previous years, worked well.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
What do these do and how do you use them?
mudlouse@reddit
They are meant to keep your picnic food cold. But wrap one in a towel, and it’s like reverse hot water bottle at nights
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Omg genius, thank you
Terrible-Group-9602@reddit
I suggest moving to Greenland.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)

Hour_Course_9876@reddit
You will need a Aircon unit if you are that hot 🥵
If you want useless fans just look at anything Chelsea related…
nickymoo@reddit
Air con units work well but are very very very loud for portable. OP might be able to get a swamp cooler. Like the ones that have ice or ice water trickling though them as that will cool the air until the ice goes.
kackers643259@reddit
Swamp coolers are only really useful in dry climates because of the way they work, they're really not that efficient here where humidity can be in the 80s or even 90s
Oster-P@reddit
I tried one of those waterfall fan things, they're basically like a slightly colder fan, but not by much. Then the thing leaked all over my carpet so I returned it and bought an air conditioner.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Giggled at your comment btw thank you
Never_trust_dolphins@reddit
I can't cope with heat at all, the thing that keeps me going in summer is lady grey iced tea, with a bit of peach robonsons squash in it.
It's insane how cooling and quenching it is, in a heat wave I go through about 6 litres a day.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
I will absolutely try this, please let me know if you have any other tips that work for you
Ill-Opportunity8918@reddit
All fans work great if you sleep with no covers on and point them in the right direction. Trouble is mine is too noisy so I need to find something a bit quieter.
SuperDinkle406@reddit
An aircon unit would be better, but if you want to go with just a fan, any fan that is quiet and you place a bowl/bucket of ice water in front of it.
So, I guess you might need an ice machine....
UnlikelyHat5885@reddit
I'd just get a portable air-con with the highest btu you can afford. That or get one of the fake air-cons which are the fans with ice/water in
Prof_Hentai@reddit
Swamp coolers are absolutely miserable. Just spend the moment and get a proper one.
UnlikelyHat5885@reddit
I thought the same but I've always had people telling me how great the water ones are! I've not bought one myself.
I have a Dyson fan but with the cost of it I wish I'd just bought something that actually cools the air
nithanielgarro@reddit
Exactly. They work really well in climates with very low relative humidity like desert air.
In the UK they will make you feel worse.
LondonCollector@reddit
Meaco air circulator. Fantastic machines, I’ve got 4 of them now and 5 people I know have bought them off the back of trying line.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
I really think this is the one I might go for, so many people have recommended it
LondonCollector@reddit
Costco often have them for a good price. It honestly gets us through summer and no need for aircon tbh
LumpyCheeseyCustard@reddit
Meaco!
We bought one last year based on reddit recommendations and we slept like babies.
Just keep curtains and windows closed during the day, and open in the evening.
We really struggled after spending a few years in the AC not having to worry about 50°c outside. Lol
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Super helpful, do you happen to have a link to the specific one you got? That'd be really useful
I also didn't know keeping curtains and windows closed during the day helped, I thought keeping windows open always would do something for some reason
LumpyCheeseyCustard@reddit
This is the one we have:
https://www.meaco.com/products/meacofan-sefte-10-pedestal-air-circulator-with-storage-bag
They have cheaper ones too. We bought it directly from them and it came with 3 year warranty.
Soggy_Detective_4737@reddit
We've got two of these floor fans
They sound like a jet engine on its way to take of, but I've the past few years we've managed to cope with the most horrendous heat.
Responsible_Bird3384@reddit
The Dyson Cool Tower fan gets excellent reviews
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Thanks so much I'll look into this
ToManyTabsOpen@reddit
Just get the Lidl Bladeless, it is almost identical, from a more ethical company and a few hundred quid cheaper.
RecentTwo544@reddit
Dyson products are about fashion and design though, not effectiveness. Don't get me wrong, not judging anyone who buys Dyson stuff, quite the opposite - like I say it's lovely design.
But a floor fan from Screwfix or the like is way way cheaper (£40 vs £350) and shift a hell of a lot more air.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
This is a great point thank you
coolbodygravy@reddit
Agreed. We've got one of those. It's pricey, but works a treat.
Poison_Regal31@reddit
Honestly non. Where I live it gets so humid. In the end I bought an air conditioner unit. Yes expensive (some you can pay instalments on) but so worth it.
RecentTwo544@reddit
I'm assuming OP is in the UK though and you aren't? We don't really get humidity in the UK (though it is often repeated as a popular myth) so a fan will do the job, especially at night, unless we get a stupidly hot summer.
SuperHansDunYourMum@reddit
Anything about 60% is considered humid. The average (so ignorong any high periods) in London (pretty much the driest part of the UK) exceeds that every single month:
RecentTwo544@reddit
Monthly mean is counting the fact the temperature drops a lot and humidity climbs a lot at night.
https://www.ventusky.com/humidity-map/2m-above-ground#p=51.73;-2.38;7&t=20250510/1500 - this was a warm "humid" day in July last year.
SuperHansDunYourMum@reddit
It's easy when you cherry pick data lol
https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/gb/london/EGLW/date/2025-7-31
This day it was over 80% all day.
RecentTwo544@reddit
Neither of us are cherry picking data - Venutsky shows the same as that website for that day too.
SuperHansDunYourMum@reddit
I don't think you know what that words means lol
RecentTwo544@reddit
You've shown me evidence of a day when it was high humidity for most of the day. I've shown evidence of a website where you can look at various days and see what the humidity was across the whole country.
"Some are days are humid but mostly the heat in the UK being difficult is down to building design" is a conclusion we've both come to.
Poison_Regal31@reddit
No I’m UK and it gets humid where I live. Top floor apartment, flat roof, heat rises.
RecentTwo544@reddit
Where abouts?
In July 2025 even on warm days, much of the country was barely hitting 30% humidity.
https://www.ventusky.com/humidity-map/2m-above-ground#p=51.73;-2.38;7&t=20250510/1500
Poison_Regal31@reddit
Okay I’m not going to have a debate with you. I stupidly used “humid” exaggerating.
Let’s just say it gets warm instead. Which for me, I find unbearable. I wish I didn’t, but I do.
Having an Air Con after a quite a few unbearable summers (for me) helped me so much. But I do love the spring sunshine.
RecentTwo544@reddit
We're not having a "debate" we're having a civil discussion about scientific facts.
And yes, no one is arguing that many people find the heat unbearable.
Poison_Regal31@reddit
Okay well I used the wrong terminology. It’s too warm where I live in the summer. Even now some people ask me if I have the heating on.

rebelallianxe@reddit
Ceiling fans have been a game changer in our bedrooms. We have a new one that is remote controlled so we can switch it on or up from bed.
indigomm@reddit
Portable air-con is brilliant, but get some earplugs. They are very loud, but with the right earplugs you can block out the noise almost completely.
smushs88@reddit
As others have said, fans will move air but not cool the air.
In terms of a fan blowing air at you I got a Meaco a year or two back and it’s certainly the most efficient (and quiet) fan I’ve had and would always recommend them having used it for a couple of summers now.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Thank you!! I'll look into it
NyxEmberheart@reddit
I second Meaco if you go for a fan. I got a MeacoFan 1056 a few years ago and its wonderful. It has lots of speed settings and it's very quiet. It even has a little remote!
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
That sounds amazing, thank you so much.
knife_133@reddit
I will second a Meaco fan. Bought one a couple years ago, wasn't cheap for a fan but it's been awesome.
Especially handy it comes with a remote so easier to adjust from bed. Really quiet, can easily sleep with it on its lower settings.
Turbulent-Chef4164@reddit
Put ice in a bowl in front of the fan. Trust me, seems silly, but it wor.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Like a small food bowl or like a big bowl?
marowitt@reddit
Have you thought about seing a gp? I had something similar last year and lostca bit of weight, turned out my thyroid was overactive. If you say you're even uncomfortable in the winter worth a test.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
I had seriously low vitamin d levels last time I went but my GP has never been helpful, it just leaves me feeling worse than when I went in, but this is interesting to know.
I've always struggled with heat ever since I was a kid though, was it the same for you or was it just last year that started this?
marowitt@reddit
I also struggled with heat since I can remember. It just got noticeably worse last year.
IronSkywalker@reddit
You can get heavy duty fans in a big plastic box, they've got some sort of compressor in them so weigh a ton. I think they're called air controllers
JohnLennonsNotDead@reddit
Any with a bowl of ice in front of it

None of them. Fans don't cool the air, they just move it around, so if you're in a hot room the fan is just going to blow hot air at you.
What you need is an air conditioner, you can get stand-alone units for reasonable prices.
MountainMuffin1980@reddit
Yes yes, but not everyone has the space/money for an AC unit. If you have a fan blowing directly on you it absolutely keeps you cool.
Villianofthepeace@reddit
I bought an air-con last year which was portable (had wheels) and as soon as it got hot I lent it my friend as his missus was pregnant and then had photos sent every night from my friend showing him having to put the quilt back on lol But I used it for 10 mins to cool the bedroom and then close the door and fall asleep (I fall asleep within a minute or two though) so didn’t have to run it as it was quite noisy. I paid about £300 but for the brief time I used it I was happy with it.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
I see, any good recommendations for those?
luckyjenjen@reddit
I bought this summer 2022. It's had loads of use and has been running for around the past 6 months 24/7 pointing at my bed. It's also useful for drying out cupboards and drying my bathroom after a shower (I live on a boat). Usb powered, although I did buy a 2m USB extension cable so I can move it around more. Cost me about 20 quid and I can't recommend it enough
I call it "my greatest fan" :D

Fans work brilliantly if they face towards you, especially if you go topless. Same reason it feels cooler if it’s breezy outside. On the hottest night of year last summer it was 30 in my room but I still woke up cold - naked, with no sheets and the fan on me. Too much information? 🫣
IssacHunt89@reddit
Lidl gets them for around£100.
Kubrick_Fan@reddit
One trick I discovered last summer is to turn on your kitchen extractor fan on low and keep it on, ideally about 4 or 5 in the morning before the sun is up and leave it running. Keep your curtains closed.
markinthecloud@reddit
Bought lots of cheap ones that seem worse each year they come out of storage. Last year picked up this one (https://amzn.eu/d/0fJSeYEk) based on reviews and it’s easily the best we’ve had. Planning to replace all the others with these this year

I bought one of these air conditioners last summer and it is the absolute mutts nuts. Actually slept like a log through the 37⁰c heatwave we had, nice and cool like salamander in a stream.
I cored a hole through a wall for the exhaust fan, but it comes with a very highly rated window attachment thingamajig that works for hinged or sash windows.

What bed sheets do you use? If you’re always THAT hot in bed, it sounds like you shouldn’t use an actual duvet at all. Maybe just a duvet cover but without an actual duvet in it.
Other than that you could try a ‘cooling’ fan. I had one where it would blow air through water that was poured over a sort of cardboard mesh. This would cool the air as the fan then blew it across the room. Obviously it would only cool the air slightly so don’t expect a drastic difference.
Other than that all you can do is maybe get an air con unit. But even for a very cheap unit for a small space it seems it’ll be like £250.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Very helpful comment actually, and I only use a very light duvet in winter for comfort purposes, it's not so bad now but I know as soon as May hits I'm going to be entering a war zone of heat and torment. I'll probably just use a ""cooling" duvet cover like you said
highrouleur@reddit
I got a little a/c unit last year, far better than any fan.
geeered@reddit
Start by preventing your spaces getting hot wherever possible - so having thickish curtains across in the day time when windows are getting a lot of IR and windows open when it's cooler to let air cooler air in.
As others have said - fans just circulate air.
You can get fans that take an ice pack (but if you're using this in the kitchen say, you'll probably make more heat from the freezer working than the cooling effect when you use it), or can make a 'swamp cooler', but air con is the real answer for cool air.

stowgood@reddit
Get an air conditioner.
Darkwaxer@reddit
You don’t need a aircon if you have a fan pointing at you whilst your skin is wet. If you are hot just before bed, have a quick shower, or just spread water over your skin a bit and lay down in front of a fan and you’ll be cold. Personally the best fan I’ve had is a Meaco 1056p. Quiet and powerful.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Extremely helpful comment thank you
Master-Trick2850@reddit
air conditioning , dont get those swamp coolers that use water because they become useless when it gets humid, which is what most of the hot summers in UK are
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)
Yes so many people have recommended AC instead, that's a whole new avenue for me to research but it's something
RecentTwo544@reddit
As others have said, air con or the likes, if you can afford it. A decent one isn't cheap to buy in the first place, and they're not cheap on electricity usage either.
If a fan is the only option, you want to shift air, a lot of it, quickly. Screwfix to the rescue - https://www.screwfix.com/p/essentials-18-floor-fan-220-240v/521eh
That's gone up a fair whack since I bought the same one for £20, but we use them at festivals/in clubs to fire at DJs to keep them cool.
WAY WAY more effective than a Dyson and an order of magnitude cheaper.
Haunting_Meeting_178@reddit (OP)

coolrich2@reddit
We bought a Meaco Sefte 10 inch tabletop fan last year from Costco and it was a lifesaver. As others say it won't cool the room but it really gets the air moving and is very quiet. Lightyears ahead of the old ineffective cheap fan we used to use lol
