Seeing Journey in 1983 felt like Beatlemania — hard to believe how long ago that was

In 1983, I saw Journey live on the Frontiers tour, and the crowd reaction was absolute arena-rock hysteria. Every time they showed on the video screens, the entire building erupted.
This was the first time I experienced this type of crowd reaction, and it left an indelible memory. I can still remember the roar of the crowd, the feel of the sound on my body, and the sense of amazement.
With Journey now out on their “Final Frontier” tour, it really hit me how much time has passed and how much the band (and the era) has changed.
Did anyone else here catch them live during the Escape/Frontiers years? What’s the most intense crowd you remember from that era?

I’m currently learning Open Arms on the piano.

They were at their peak back then. Now I hate the politics in the band and Jonathan turned into a grifter like his fucking wife.

What AI photo bullshit band is that supposed to be?

Beatlemania ran up to about 1966 which was 17 years before you saw Journey on the Frontiers tour. The Frontiers tour was 33 years ago. Almost twice as long from the time you saw Journey. FML!!!

It used to be weird when I turned an age that I remember my parents passing that milestone. Next year, I will turn 60, and I remember celebrating that birthday with my grandmother.
The gray in my beard does not lie. The calendar is correct.

I saw them during the Escape tour in 1981 (I was in high school). The opening act was Billy Squier. I don’t remember the crowd going as crazy as you described but it was definitely one of the must see concerts back then.

I saw an LA Forum "Escape" show with Loverboy opening, and I wouldn't call the crowd reaction anything like Beatlemania. They booked several shows there and opened seats behind the stage so yes, they sold a lot of tickets, but they weren't one of those life-changing concert experiences for people. By "Frontiers" they weren't selling as many tickets as they did a couple years earlier.
Now Duran Duran at that same buildng in 1984... that you can probably compare to Beatlemania.

Saw that same Duran Duran tour at Madison Square Garden. Same crowd reaction.

Saw them in Hartford in 86 on their last tour with Steve Perry. Great show.

Superior to the moptops tbh. Journey for the win.

I saw Journey in the '83 and Bryan Adams was the opener. I got the Cuts like a Knife tee in stead of Journey. Great concert.

Without Steve Perry this tour is just a Journey cover band.

Damn. And I remember when Journey opened for The Rolling Stones in 1981 at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Half of the 90,000 people there were booing! Glad to see thing's seem to change for them.

Where’s Steve Perry?

I went to the Rolling Stones opening concert for the Tattoo You tour in Philly in 81. Journey was one of the opening bands. They were basically booed the entire set, although George Thorogood got an great reception (he was a local boy). The Stones fans just wanted them off the stage so the Stones could set up and play. Shame, cause they were trying to put on a good show.

I was journey a few weeks ago for their finals tour. Not the same…

Now audiences are holding up their phones the entire time. Idiots.

That memory inspired me to write a longer reflection here:
