Yup I did the same for a while. Started taking a 2h30m commute took me 5 hours a day to get to and from work. You can ride e-bikes on highways but check local road laws first. It cut down my commute time to 1h or 90m instead.
The road I’m on isn’t that busy and most of the time people just go around me and keep their distance. I’ve been riding this highway for about a month now and haven’t had any issues.
Yeah thankfully I only have to road until I get moved into the city which is hopefully next week or so. I’ve only put up with the highway because my old route was too dangerous. I’d rather risk getting hit by a car than a rabid wild dog bitting me while trying to go up a steep hill
Nice! Im intrigued about the highway...curious where you did that. Ive wanted to try it since it has such a big shoulder and is usually the most direct path but here in Michigan im quite sure its illegal although I dont know if it enforced much.
I’d call your local sheriff and ask which route would be okay. I would tell my highway but it would doxx my location which I’m not doing lol.
But even the sheriff herself recommended that I take the highway over the bike path, and she just recommended I follow the rules of the road and have the proper safety equipment.
Though expect to get honked at a fair amount on the highway since people don’t like bikes. Though I’ve noticed after wearing a motorcycle helmet (that’s bright yellow) I don’t get honked at as much anymore.
Safety gear id recommend : yellow helmet for during the day and a high visibility vest.
For night I would recommend the vest, and a hazard light kit for your bike + a headlight
If you’re like me and use a backpack to store an extra battery I recommend a high visibility patch so people can see you.
Over the summer I did 1800mi on my modified Mokwheel Basalt. I mostly used PAS 1 to conserve my single 48v 19ah battery. Usually one recharge per day, sometimes multiple.
The longest distance I went in a day was 97 mi, and that was 6hr of riding time. Most days were 60-80mi.
I had toured across the US in 2012 on a regular bike so I had a fair level of experience with long rides and went prepared with the objective of reducing saddle pain and palm / finger numbness.
So I got myself an SQLabs 621 saddle, which, for me, is the best I've ever had. Not perfect, still requires taking breaks about once an hour or a few mins off the saddle every ten miles or so.
Getting your bike fit well to you, and setting up your cockpit is crucial for comfort. I also swapped out my flat bars for Surly Moloko style bars that have multiple handholds.
If you're interested in keeping it up I can give some clear advice.
It's a torque sensor. So it curves with your input.
On flats I can go 28mph in 44:11 (I replaced the freewheel gearset for one that's lower)
However my typical cruising speed at 65rpm and ~210w human power is anywhere from 17-22mph.
If I go to PAS2 I can I easily max out the gearing, and anything above is basically a cadence nightmare to try to add more power above 28mph. Though in PAS5 30mph is not uncomfortable, 34 is sustainable but that's kind of the absolute max without replacing the front gear.
I feel like I'm an unusual case though. I'm a "fathlete" diesel kind of rider. Very heavy but very strong.
Someone who isn't as torquey as me would probably cruise lower in pas 1.
How much does a bike like that cost you? I want to get a proper mountain ebike so it’s easier to pedal. But when I pedal on my bike I can barely do 10 to 12mph in pas 1
This is a pretty common frame used by multiple companies. I got mine for $1400, they haven't changed pricing very much.
This may look like a hard tail MTB, but I certainly wouldn't ride it like one. Hardpack trails and fields and stuff are fine, but as bulky as the frame is I don't think it could take the stress of real mountainbikng.
Pas 1 on this simply sets the multiplication level of my human power, so it's not like a cadence sensor that has hard cutoffs. Also it's a 750w motor.
Very cool. Cant believe how much less battery you used...I mean my bike was probably loaded up a bit more but you also said your heavier so you must of really been pedaling! And only now am I noticing the trailer so I'm even more perplexed.
One of the things that kinda hurts me here is I switched to a single speed setup so my pedaling isnt as efficient as it could be. Hella worth it for me though for lower maintenance.
Soo its a bit of a frankenstein...It was this obscure brand PWR model Dually. 2 500watt hub motors. Had issues with it but the frame was solid so attached a 1000w bbshd and some UPP batteries. I mean to add a pic of the setup
I have a Revv1 FS with dual battery, 44ah total. I gave it a long range run recently and got around 73 miles. Do you recall your avg speed? That total seems lower than i would've guessed
as 25Ah owner I'm very disagreed, even on throttle only you can easily get 42mi on ride another 42mi with no issues. Ofc it's kind of PAS, but still it depends on your average speed. My avg in between 11-16mph, pedals+motor.
I usually try to aim at least 1 mi to 1 amp on the battery pack. Currently I am running at 1.2 mi for one amp.
Reduce as much rotational mass and drag as possible. I also installed hybrid ceramic bearings in everything, CAP bus system to help reduce battery strain.. I usually going between 14 to 18 mph... Awesome know what the correct RPM of that system is the most efficient.. I have a 70 amp battery in the works. And I'm already getting 40 miles off of 36 no pedaling.. Because if I wanted something healthy I would have gotten acoustic bike. I rather have something freeing
Maybe you just need more battery? Could do plenty of standing to stretch and rest the bum... Something I realized...a friend of mine is an elute level distance runner, has literally ran my trip plus 3 miles...100mi ultra. Fucking insane
It’s definitely not a battery issue, it’s just a lot of core usage. The combination of very hot weather and hours on a bike will wear you out and where you started out riding relaxed, several hours in you’ll turn to rely on your core strength even more which combined with the other factors tire you out even faster. As the day gets longer and longer you’ll become more stiff and rigid in your riding. I’ve done rides like this one two different types of bikes, it really really does take a whole lot out of you.
Impressive! I read your comment on the bike you use, anyone have an idea of what I could buy straight out to do range like this with out modifications?
That's awesome. I'm planning some long range rides this season the same kinda length. Revv1 FS with two sets of 52v 44ah each. Guesstimated range, I'm hoping for 130-140mi, I just dont know if my ass will hold up haha
Yeeaahhh a real good point. There was a path more north that used the Fred Meijer trail and on second look it only adds 5 miles so I think I will try it. I was trying to play it safe refarding range anxiety. The thing is your not technically suppose to have ebikes on the trail so Im a little nervous about that
One-Treat4655@reddit
Did it take you 8 hours?
dahill52@reddit (OP)
About 5 hours in the saddle. Google maps bike calculator estimates average speed of like 10mph while I was close to 20.

You're brave! Even if it's allowed in some places, I would not trust drivers at all. I've seen people on their phones swerve quite widely.

Just curious, how fast can you go on the Basalt at PAS 1? Maybe just under 10 mph?

mil0wCS@reddit
I have a Qnut bike. It’s an alright ebike. For $400 gets the job done but can’t really do pas 1 because it’s just too hard to pedal with it.

My total system mass was ~240kg (540lb)
But yes, gearing helps a whoooole bunch.

RichGuarantee7482@reddit
The 73pro doesnt have gears so its ghost pedaling after 15 mph. I was probably pedaling uselessly
dahill52@reddit (OP)
Not for sure. Regretfully I have a real basic display so no hard stats...cruising speed probably averaged 19mph. Curious what "total" you mean
exclusively_abscure@reddit
The 42mi total in your post. Komoot tells me I averaged 17.8mph for my 73mi ride. Kept it in Class 3 Pas 2/3 most of my ride

Legend, the most I've done in a day is 50.1 miles but this summer I hope to pass that
LexLex07@reddit
Just 50 miles? 70mi in about 6.5 hours is realy doable, e-bike is hella good thing!

I’ve done 106 miles in one day…never ever again. Too much for the body imho.
