Fellas, where are you buying your cargo shorts?
Posted by R0botDreamz@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 208 comments
I went shorts shopping yesterday. It was eye opening.
We are back in the 90s because everything is baggy fit. Our generation pioneered that look (see me in 8th grade with a 28in waist wearing 34-36 shorts with a braided belt).
But at 45, it's a no no. A couple of years ago Old Navy had some decent cargos. And believe it or not Wal-Mart had some amazing ones as well (Chaps brand). I spent all day store hopping yesterday and they all looked ridiculously baggy.
I'm looking for basic colors (khaki, navy, gray) with nothing longer than an 9" inseam. I know they exist somewhere. Anyone got a lead?

Kohl’s has been a solid choice for decades. Sometimes it helps to check in store-they’ll be sold out of all the good sizes/styles so I just copy the brand/styles/etc and order it online. Last I knew you still don’t HAVE to have an account with them-just order, pay & done. Huge selection too.
palmburntblue@reddit
Get on eBay for A&F shorts. They nailed it.
cousinfrombostonn@reddit
This. Found a box of old clothes from back in the day and had 6 pair of AF cargo shorts. I wore the fuck out of them until 2009. They are worn but still sturdy
michael41973@reddit
Sam’s Club. Had to buy some new ones a couple years ago and saw some there for like $12. They’ve held up pretty good and I’ve bought several more in different colors.

Department stores like Dillard's and Macy's get the same men's clothes year after year. Levi's and Ralph Lauren both have the kinds of shorts you're looking for a long with some store brands.
LongjumpingJaguar308@reddit
Costco had some good looking ones when I was there last, but being Costco, I couldn't try them on.

Positives: it’s cheap, functional and relatively long lasting.
Cons: my wife says I need to get some new clothes before our upcoming trip.

There are often discount codes & discounts on gift card purchases that can then be used with a discount code on your order, particularly around holidays.

They’re pricy, but I have several pairs that are at least a decade old. The zipper pull on the right pocket was the only thing that has broken on them for me.

Carhart ones at Meijer or TSC. Super durable.

$65 for a pair of shorts is not out of line. Shorts don’t cost $30 bux like they did in 1998 anymore. Even at Old Navy.
CorgiMonsoon@reddit

ZaphodBeeblebrahx@reddit

NightWriter500@reddit
I get mine at Costco for like $20, and it comes with the benefit of not giving John Fisher money.
brute1111@reddit
I have some Duluth Trading cargo shorts and they are made of a material that simply doesn't wear out. They've lasted longer than any pair I've ever owned by a big margin and show no signs of quitting. They also have a stretchy band in the waist so I can still wear them through the holidays.
Also going to give a shout out to their jeans and the CROTCH GUSSET which makes them last years longer for me than previous brands I've tried like Levi and Wrangler.
Pretty much everything they sell is incredibly comfortable and durable and they sell stuff that covers all levels of formality I generally need (my work is fairly casual and polos/jeans are plenty). Some days I'm decked head to toe in Duluth except for my socks.
_Ethel_Beavers@reddit
I have some Duluth jeans with the crotch gusset. I also have a spot on the couch I like to sit with my feet on the edge of the coffee table, leaving my knees in the air (looks like I’m prepared to give birth). In said position, the crotch gusset is very visible and my wife makes fun of it every time she walks by.
Totally worth getting heckled for the flexibility that extra bit of fabric adds.

Last cargo shorts I bought, which was last year I think, I picked up Wrangler brand off of Amazon. They fit nice. My only complaint is that the cargo pockets were too small to carry my cell phone. Most of my other pairs have deep cargo pockets to go along with the regular pockets.
RockShowSparky@reddit
I’m still on the black dickies work shorts. They look the same as they did in the 90s.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
No more cargo shorts. Just don’t, it’s not a good look. I go to the outlet mall (J Crew, Gap, etc) and just get regular khaki shorts of various colors, 7 inch inseam. 5 inch if you’re feeling bold. Above the knee looks much better than the baggy look. Just because baggy might be back in, don’t fall for it. Clothes that fit properly don’t go out of style.
joshuastar@reddit
target usually has 9” inseam shorts. goodfellow brand. olive, grey, khaki. not cargo, though.
PokerbushPA@reddit
Since when do we give a shit what is allowed? Wear those baggy shorts. I need pockets, not the confirmation of my peers.

I buy kitchen shorts from ChefUniforms. They are baggy so they breathe and I've probably washed them 40,000 times with little to no signs of wearing out. The pockets are a good size for stuff. Target has great shorts that aren’t baggy and are for guys in their 40’s. I’m usually shopping for clothes at target. They are basic and a little more expensive than perhaps Walmart. They also sell printed T shirts if you’re feeling youthful. Put simply they have basic threads that don’t break the wallet and fit somewhat decent if you’re of average height and build.

Used to get these at Walmart for $15, then they stopped carrying them a few years ago and I found the same on Amazon. (I own one pair of cargo pants that are for funerals only, and even then only if I expect to be a pallbearer.)
I don't get the hate from weirdos. I literally don't care what pants other people wear, and people anyone that would judge a person for wearing practical and comfortable shorts is a weirdo and not someone I'd hang with.
