Orthodox Priest, Papa Kristo Negovani was slaughtered by Greek nationalists in 1905 for using Albanian during liturgy. What are some heroes in your country that fell for protecting your language and identity.

What saltiness? It is a true historical event

The saltiness in you, getting butthurt over a greek who made a similar post about a greek getting slaughtered by albanians, asking the same question, in the same wording. Had you really cared for your historical figure, you would have posted about him differently, even responded in that original post, instead of making this post and looking like a miserable ex-girlfriend.

God I hate AskBalkans. I am not even going to answer this and enter a rabbit hole. Everybody killed everyone here in Balkans and our whole collective history is one regressive war crime, massacre and murder after another. What is the point of bringing them up constantly to stir nationalistic feelings and throw dirt at the other side? I wish we can just move the fuck on.

Well, the serbs and the romanians are the only 2 countries that have never waged war on each other , and there is ( or was a saying up until the ‘90’s) that “Romania has only 3 friends : The Black Sea, The Danube and The Serbs”

How can you lie so blatantly? Let me just bring up the 2020 case of Aristotelis Goumas - a man from the Greek minority in Albania who was killed by 3 Albanians from Vlore after refusing to speak Albanian and speaking Greek in his own shop. You can bring up things from 100 years ago, Greeks can bring up things from 6 years ago. Also what happened to the Greeks of North Epirus in the 1910's, 1930-40's and 1960's? Where are the Greeks that inhabited Durres? Assimilation is a Balkan thing, everyone did it, so stop being blinded by nationalism and stop acting as If Albanians are some innocent sheep that did never any harm to their neighbors.

What makes Black Sea a Balkan region? Just because we have 2-3 cities in Balkans, does that make a country of 800,000 km2 balkan?
Erozbey@reddit
The history and culture of the people living there are enough to make you feel like you’re a Balkan country.
Empty-Pace-4228@reddit
"The history and culture of the people living there are enough to make you feel like you’re a Balkan country."
Bro, they hate your f***ng guts there. Just because you conquered that land and your kinsmen lived there that doesn't make your country Balkan. They already eradicated and sent back most of the Turks to Turkiye. Today, there is no real connection between Bulgaria and Kocaeli, Manisa, Bursa or Balıkesir, there is no similarity.
Erozbey@reddit
Want to hear a secret? Everyone hates each other in the Balkans. The Turks were just the last group to arrive. Were the peoples living in the Balkans really so happy when the Romans first came? Were they living in peaceful, happy times under Eastern Roman rule? There were rebellions; there was opposition. One of the terms used in historical sources to describe the Balkans is “New Turkey.” I don’t know if you’ve been there, but I spent years in Bulgaria, and there are still Turks living there and there are still Turkish villages. Beyond that, those who migrated are part of our Balkan culture. If you’re looking for a lot of drama, how many of them—besides the Greeks—are actually original ethnic groups? They weren’t there from the very beginning. There was migration, tribes merged, and they eventually took on their present form. Over the last 600 years or so, we came and there was another cultural exchange. People can hate as much as they want. You can’t change the truth. So if someone approaches me with hatred, I just laugh it off.
Empty-Pace-4228@reddit
"Everyone hates each other in the Balkans. The Turks were just the last group to arrive"
That's true
"There was migration, tribes merged, and they eventually took on their present form. Over the last 600 years or so, we came and there was another cultural exchange."
That's also true.
But you forgot to mention one thing.
This is not only the hate thing, also nobody recognizes us Balkan too, it is really rare. And they're right. Because all those people that came here by migration made it their home. For example, there is no Albanians, Greeks or Romanians outside Balkans but 99% of the Turkish nation is outside the Balkans.
Thy were ethnically cleansed and they became a little majority. Plus their existence and settlement on the Balkans were artificial, they didn't migrate, they were made settled by an occupying empire. So Balkans have all their rights to identify us as foreigners. Turkish identity is Turkish, it exists in Turkey.
Erozbey@reddit
Their subjective views are their own. The Ottomans were a Balkan empire. They invested the most in the Balkans. It’s only natural that we’re the ones who face the most hostility. We’re a people who came from Asia; we destroyed the Greeks’ precious empire; we were there at a time when everything—good or bad—was more accessible and easier to document than it is a thousand years later.
I have nothing to say about your saying that we have no right there just because people were settled there. It’s as if no one ever migrates somewhere and claims it as their own. Well, let me tell you this: just as we have no claim in the Balkans, the Greeks do not have any claim in Anatolia either. After all, they were colonists—brought there by their leaders, weren’t they?
Ujemegaz@reddit
Yes, but when they win, it is a glorious event, and when they lose is unjust.

Metropolitan Photis of Korçë was killed after the attack on father Kristo and others in Negovan (today, Flampouro). On his, and particularly Metropolitan Germenos of Kastoria, albanians, specifically those of the orthodox faith, that taught, wrote, campaigned and preached in albanian were killed. He got what he deserved.
Nikoschalkis1@reddit
Bro this isn't the place to solve these issues I know a lot of fucked up shit happened from everyone's side. For example all of helenism of Attica was exterminated by Albanian orders under the ottomans around 1800, now Albanians come and claim that shit. Still this isn't the place to solve these issues I'm just pointing out the absurdity.
albo_kapedani@reddit
Albanians "exterminated hellenism"?! Are you for real?! What bloody "hellenism" was there in the 1800s?! Talking about 1900s ideas as they were somewhat so prevalent in the 19th century!
How many greeks did the exterminate on the ottoman orders?! Apparently greeks didn't convert to Islam and fought for the High Porte?! How many greeks identity as turks today?!
Albanians don't claim, know or care about Attica, or for the identity of the arvinites. Not one bit.
Someone posted and wrote something provocative. People responded. I'm not going into the psychology of it is good or bad to respond to provocation, but it happens to the best of us.
Definitely, no issues is going to be solved either here, nor will it anywhere else. Yasas.
Nikoschalkis1@reddit
What the? What are they even telling you on the internet bro. Do Albanians really believe Greek is a construct of the 1900s? Talk about schizophrenia... Omer vrioni specifically ordered the massacre of anyone greek from all areas around Athens and more. The arguement is lost from the start with you guys...
albo_kapedani@reddit
Breath for a moment.
Definitely greek or helen is not a construct of the 19th or 20th century. Is far older one, is indeed ancient. No one is denying it. What I meant, the hellenism or the notion of a greek state in the 1800s was much more nuanced, diverse and inclusive then that of the late 1800s early 1900s.
Omet Vrioni killed as much albanians, and others as it did greek. He was a ottoman commander. Nothing more.
Calm down and stop going straight into offending people.

LastHomeros@reddit
Greeks love to call Greek everyone who follows Eastern Orthodox Church. They tried to do the same to Arabs, Karamanlis, and Albanians.
-MrAnderson@reddit
They did it to Greeks as well.
All the former mainly Greek (but also non-Greek) speaking subjects of the former Ottoman empire considered themselves Romans; Romans as in the Roman identity that was formed during the 1,000+ years of ERE: Greek language, orthodox Christianity, mix of Roman and Greek culture.
If you are a descendant of Byzantines living in Alexandria in 1900, what do you call yourself?
LastHomeros@reddit
Yeah, but Rum was a religious and national identity, not an ethnic one. Anyone, regardless of their background, could be a Rum if they followed Eastern Orthodox Christianity and were subjects of the Eastern Roman Empire. So much so that, ethnic Southern Slavs such as Bulgars and Serbs were considered part of “Rum Millet” (Roman Nation?) for a long time. It’s sad that Western Europeans translated it as Greek, which led to many ethnic conflicts later on.
Mucklord1453@reddit
False. And who cares if the Ottomans threw bulgars and serbs into the "rum millet" They were not Rums/Romans. Even when bulars were incorporated into the Byzantine Empire under Basil II they were not considered Romans, just "subjects OF" rome.
A Roman in the middle ages until recenlty was what we now call a Greek.
And you say western europeans translated Roman into a Greek? False again, the Bulgar/Serb rulers THEMSELVES used the two words interchangably, and would almost esculsuvily use "greek" when speaking and writing in their own language.. centuries ago.
-MrAnderson@reddit
There was an actual Roman ethnicity though, and Romans (what we call now Byzantines) had a national consciousness of who they are, as attested by many of their own records. They would describe their own army as composed of "Romans, Armenians, Bulgarians, etc", meaning there were certain features required for someone to be considered Rhomaios. For several reasons this translated to 'Greek' around the time of the revolution.
Example, by Birkenmeier: "[...] Choniates and Kinnamos [...] note the presence of many particular foreigners (listed in a separate section), but Rhomaioi are usually the officers and provide most of the cavalry, (Birkenmeir 161) [...].

It is interesting. Dozen of comments replying to me saying how we betrayed religion, our culture, our roots and Arvanites who kept religion, no longer speak Albanian, forgot their roots and even hate us more than Greeks to prove themselves worthy. Personally i can't make any sense out of this, but this sub made me like Turks more. Maybe they are truly those friends you make along the way. I don't hide the athrocities they did to us, but it is the past, and no one is alive to remember those. Now they respect us, and i remember it was Turks themselves that suggested Albanian elective lessons in their own schools a decade ago and they implemented such policy but our ministry is not doing enough. Maybe it is the fact that muslim religion is majority on paper that they act so, but i don't mind.
bruhmanbruuh@reddit
Oh ,it gets even better ; people here act like Arvanitika is NOT albanian . It's quite a cope.
Burlotier@reddit
The albanian language and identity was created in the late 19th century , the arvanite language itself is a fusion of Greek and Illyrian . The Albanian language has more Thracian characteristics with a lot of Illyrian based words .
Arvanites are still Greek as they have willingly become part of the identity during the 13th century

That is like saying "Roman Emperor Michael III was so Roman Greek that he wanted the liturgy (in the Slav-speaking lands) to be conducted in Slavic".

I will cite three cases: I will start with Sepé Tiaraju, he is a legendary figure from the southern region of Brazil (which is where I live), he was a warrior of the Guarani tribe who resisted expulsions, if I'm not mistaken, by the Spanish and Portuguese from their lands, he spread a famous phrase: "This land has an owner", he ended up being killed in combat and became a popular saint among Catholics.
There is also the case of Nheçu, also Guarani, who participated in resistance against the European acculturation that came from his lands, and even ordered assassinations and massacres against Jesuits.
There is also the case, which I must respect, of the celebrated warrior Ajuricaba. He was part of the Manau tribe and fought against Portuguese privatizations in the Rio Negro region, along with other tribes. He led the "Rio Negro Confederation." He was eventually captured, but preferred to throw himself into the water in chains and drown rather than be taken prisoner by the white men.
Lothronion@reddit
Seems said Greek ultranationalists had never heard of Cyril and Methodius.
Burlotier@reddit
It was more complicated as in the Arvanites tried to limit Albanian influence in Epirus . In addition Albanian was created by outside countries than grow organically . So at best it was viewed as “misguided” or treachery at worst .
I still think it was the wrong action but perhaps they could have explained to him or let him be .

Osman Nevres was a Turkishman of Jewish origin. He was journalist working for Turkish Intelligence Service an Ittihad Terakki Party. He changed his name to Hasan Tahsin and went to İzmir for a mission.
Ottoman Empire lost WW1 and Greeks were saying "My ancestors lived on this land before yours, so I can take it over and expulse your people" just like Zionists are doing currently. Zionists also say "This region was Judea but Romans exiled us and brought Arabs here, Arabs are the real invaders we're just taking back our land!" Greeks also wanted to take their own revenge for the centuries of Ottoman rule.
On 15 May 1919, Greek troops landed on İzmir by their ships. Greeks of İzmir were in the streets with flags in their hands. Everybody was joyful, a priest blessed Greek soldiers in the ports of İzmir and people were around them chanting.
Hasan Tahsin was in the crowd, he took his pistol and shouted "Death to the invaders!" and killed 2 Greek soldiers called Basile Delaris ve Jorj Papakostos. He attacked a regiment of soldiers all alone and got shot to death.
Greeks who came to the region for establishing Megali Idea and send back to Mongolia got send back to Greece in 1923 and 1955, their plans were directed to theirselves.

the diakos post pissed me too, criminalizing albanians for all the stuff that has happened to greeks...
MasterpieceVirtual66@reddit
The other post should have specified "muslim Albanian mercenaries" (as they played a very prominent role in the Ottoman side of the Greek Revolution) instead of just "Albanians".
norfynorfy@reddit
yes i agree, but in that case still provide any proof possible for them being Albanians in the first place, guys you forget that the Albanian mercenaries have supported reek causes for millennials, its really sad to see greek propaganda spread hate against Albanians just because many converted to islam, or even cause of our edgy personality, but to believe all these stuff i see online or even on greek scripts the last decades, i wish the greeks could have searched more about that, realising that a big part of greek society was build on Albanian blood, also the wars were fought through a big amount of Albanian soldiers, i wish the greeks would remember that even Kolokotronis used to speak Albanian....its just sad to watch all this ignorance fly....

The world could care less about Greeks or Albanians. It is no longer the 19th century. Plus, even then, the invested parties were well informed of Albanians and Greeks. If they had belueved Greeks, Korca all the way to Himara would become part of Greece.
norfynorfy@reddit
my friend we have lost already parts of Albania for these reasons, dont forget, cities in Macedonia, Greece, Montenegro and even in Kosovo have been lost from us, even if the people still speak our language.... I would dare our neighbors to do a DNA test... the only bad part about it is the turkish blood mixed with us ballkans lol
Ujemegaz@reddit
We lost because we were not united and hesitated, and we had no clear scope. Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria had a clear vision, and they achieved it more or less.
norfynorfy@reddit
this clear vision is called divide and conquer, comes from a place of bad heart, and destroying is easier than building..
Ujemegaz@reddit
Look at today. Neither Albania nor Kosovo have a clear vision. Their grudges messed up our factor in Macedonia even.
norfynorfy@reddit
Brother, Albania and Kosovo unfortunately have been a subject of many experiments from the Greeks, Serbs and Çifutet...if you really wanna know more we can talk on private..but dont believe that we have ended up in this situation cause we had no clear goal, most likely cause our educated people have been killed one after the other.
SE_prof@reddit
Take up arms my friend. Greater Albania is within reach!
MasterpieceVirtual66@reddit
There isn't much evidence of Kolokotronis knowing Albanian except maybe the very basics, but other than that I agree that there is ignorance on the subject by many. The Greek War of Independence featured many Christian Albanian fighters who often fought against Ottoman-Albanian mercenary forces.
norfynorfy@reddit
it is left for speculation as how many normal greeks used to use Albanian language for communication, that is true, but in any case im just saddened by the lies that are been thrown in the air by propagandanists, i was raised in greece listened to albanians being criminals, only when i left the place i started hearing about the Massacre of "Çameria", which now is known as "Giannina". In September 1906, an Albanian çeta (gang band) murdered the Orthodox bishop of Korçë, a town located to the West of Bitola, an area heavily inhabited by Albanian speakers. At first glance, one could perceive, in this murder of the local chief of the Orthodox community perpetrated by a group mainly made out of Muslims, the tangible expression of a religious clash. In reality, this violent act, viewed in a wider scope, must be interpreted within another framework, the rising of the Albanian nationalism.

Oh yeah. Imagine if you and I went to Berlin and created the biggest Serbo-Albanian or Albano-Serbian drug empire. Now imagine if we had a Romanian, a Turk, a Croat, a Bosnain, a Greek,... it would destroy the economy. But we dont because my grandpa's friend from Dragash took your grandma's cousin's harvester in 74' without asking. Now we must hate eachother forever

You'd be surprised. Albanian and Serbs do journeys together. Criminals get along much better than governments.

Poet Laza Kostić spoke in Serbian in the Hungarian parliament. When he was interrupted and reminded that the official language in parliament was Hungarian, he continued his speech in Latin, then in German, and then returned to Serbian again, skillfully using his knowledge of languages (he spoke eight) to point out the absurdity of banning his native language.

Until we have unity over shared interests and respect for each others nations futures, we will never come to an agreement over history. So I think that's why other comments sentiment is that this seems to be a bit baity.
