Now that Montenegro’s path to the EU has been greenlit for 2028, how long do you predict it will take for the country to join the Schengen area? Would you say it will take as long as it took for Bulgaria & Romania, or will it be faster?

Oh I hope this year or another I will come to Montenegro. I was there in 2005 when I were 10yo
RegularUser2020@reddit
Imagine the shitshow If Romania and Bulgaria start vetoing new Schengen members just because they can now after being vetoed themselves for so many years
pastorok21@reddit
Fast. They already have euro currency.
Frank_cat@reddit
I hope much faster.
Romania and Bulgaria were treated wrongly and unfairly.
0neManSquad@reddit
No worries, we're used to it
Frank_cat@reddit
:(
Substratas@reddit (OP)
Agree. It felt like discrimination chile.
Diligent_Rice6315@reddit
Montenegrins are very tall so the border guards can easily see who is coming and going. Schengen will be easy for them :)
Mako2401@reddit
Montenegro, a country of 600k people, which is majority Christian and has no real issues with any of the neighbors is easier to get in the EU than any other country. I think the other countries will have a lot of problems getting in unless they get in in some kind of package deal with Ukraine.
alkorisno@reddit
I will say about never
timisorean_02@reddit
I sadly don't think it will change anything for travelers coming from Romania and Bulgaria, via Serbia. Perhaps a dedicated EU-line at the border, but that does not help much, as I have seen at Evzoni, on the NMK-GR border.
Dreadscythe95@reddit
Why? There are no border checks at the Greek border. I travelled freely to BG last summer.
timisorean_02@reddit
Because between Romania and Montenegro, there's a a country called "Serbia", which isn't going to join the E.U. anytime soon... And so, even if MNE will enter Schengen, the lines will remain.
And also, North Macedonia isn't in the E.U., so, your border with them implies waiting in line...sometimes for hours and hours.
P.S. Sorry for being harsh, but it doesn't look like you read my message quite carefully.
P.S.S. The scenario you mentioned is OK, for people living in southern, and eastern Romania, who want to go to Greece. For me, from the western part, the route not only has 85% motorway if I travel through Serbia, but is also shorter in km, for all destinations west of Stavros (including Paralia Katerini/Olympic Beach, where many romanians go)
This-Wall-1331@reddit
It's still faster than driving around through Hungary and Croatia, and you can enter Serbia with a national ID.
timisorean_02@reddit
Yeah, I know, I have done this trip a few times already :).
But I have noticed the downsides of the EES system back in december, when I had to wait 1h when entering Romania, as they only had one line open with ”all passports”.
Admirable_Gas1653@reddit
Idk, I’m an EU citizen too with a Dutch passport, and I also entered Greece via Evzoni and it was fast. 5 minutes at most
timisorean_02@reddit
Yeah, if you have like 5 cars in front of you...
This rarely happens in the summer season, when they simply let everyone go to whichever line they wish.
Admirable_Gas1653@reddit
I went in late June
timisorean_02@reddit
And how many cars were in front of you?
Admirable_Gas1653@reddit
One or two, four at most
Apart-Temperature329@reddit
It's a small nation with a considerable smaller population than the countries you've mentioned. Thus, no reason for it to be delayed for long.
Dreadscythe95@reddit
Also they already use the Euro unofficially so adopting it will be much easier.
WorldlinessRadiant77@reddit
Much faster.
The only reason it took so long for Bulgaria and Romania is the refugee crisis. We covered the requirements in 2013 or something, but since we are external borders…
dwartbg9@reddit
Yup. It didn't take us that long because we didn't fulfill the requirements and were stagnating. We were literally vetoed by other members.
Also because other countries were scared of letting us getting better economically, especially Putin's Austrian puppets. This is well known. Montenegro isn't that important on the map, and grand scheme of things. Almost a micro-state with a population of only 600,000 people. Nobody is scared of them, and they know nobody from their government can change anything, even if they wanted to.
Dreadscythe95@reddit
They do have a Veto as everyone else though. If a Russo-friendly government gets elected it could create problems to the EU. (I am not saying it wil, I just counterh the "no power" argument)
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
what so if they deposed veto inside EU ? Veto system stayed for new countries means new problems.
blitzfreak_69@reddit
They are now working on implementing a process in which we will not have veto powers whenever our democratic processes or whatever backslide. So if we ever end up in a Hungary kind of situation our veto powers would automatically be revoked. They are considering adding that into the EU - Montenegro Accession Agreement. Our Agreement will be the model for all following Acession Agreements and will redefine the accession process. They are already taking it into account.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Of course they will after what has planned with Ukraine and Russia. However the benefits for the state and people of Montenegro will be exponential starting from 2028 anyway.
blitzfreak_69@reddit
I honestly would not mind at all joining without veto powers. I am all for qualified majority voting majority within EU anyway, plus I’m pretty sure the EU has more important things to do than adopt policies that specifically and uniquely are targeted against Montenegro alone that we and only we would ever need to veto..
Minute_Eye3411@reddit
Yes it was basically Austria (and I think another country that I cannot remember) that was blocking Schengen for Bulgaria and Romania. All other countries had no problem with it. However the EU works on 100% consensus on such issues, so it only takes one single country to slow things down.
timisorean_02@reddit
The Netherlands. But they only had something against Bulgaria.
Minute_Eye3411@reddit
Why?
WorldlinessRadiant77@reddit
It was an election year that the far-right was expected to win and Rutte was playing the tough on immigration card. Immediately after that the veto was lifted.
Minute_Eye3411@reddit
Ah ok. Thanks for the info.
Besrax@reddit
Hey, don't throw shade on my boy Montenegro. 😤
Substratas@reddit (OP)
Oof the way you clocked that tea with this line. I’m always mystified by how ”they” never focus on Austria’s proximity to Russia. They pretend like it’s not there.
7amdrei7@reddit
You have small population (for air travel) and a tiny, tiny land border with EU/Schengen. It should be smooth sailing unless you keep harboring ruzzians.
This-Wall-1331@reddit
True but the borders with Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania need to comply with Schengen standards.
This-Wall-1331@reddit
Montenegro has less people than Luxembourg. And considering how it went with most other EU countries, I'd say it will take them four years at most.
No-Championship-4632@reddit
Should be faster than Bulgaria and Romania unless there comes a new refugee crisis.
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
I think if we can change our government in 2028 elections we can be a fully member around 2035
TheSocDem@reddit
dwartbg9@reddit
itsperfectlysplendid@reddit
EU even includes Bulgaria, so there should be no issues bordering Syria, Iraq ect.
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
Yeah, border security isn't an issue if you take it serious.
hubbabubbameqershi@reddit
I don't think that the government is a problem for EU.
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
Lol it is definitely a problem for EU
hubbabubbameqershi@reddit
Not more than 85 million muslims.
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
An Albanian saying this
hubbabubbameqershi@reddit
Why? Isn't the truth?
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
No it's not the truth. And also half of your country is Muslim XD
hubbabubbameqershi@reddit
I don't have any issues with anyone's religion. It is a fact that Brussels doesn't prefer countries with muslim population. It has changed a bit lately I don't know why but it is what it is.

Biz hiçbir zaman eu ülkesi olmayacağız, kim yönetiyor fark etmez; erdoğanı sadece bahane olarak kullanıyorlar, aynı Amerikanların S-400'ü bahane olarak kullanması gibi.
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
StartAndUpThatThing@reddit
No possible way. It’s not about only erdogan regime but also the population we have. This might take more time than you expect.
Serious-Ad-5275@reddit
Let's make it 2036 🤝
StartAndUpThatThing@reddit
But yeah current regime plays massive role on it. If it’s changed something’s start to change as well
Miserable-Ground-379@reddit
Probably EU will break down before this happens😅
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
like NATO?
DriveByAtanCivciv@reddit
I thought they were in the eu already
trisul-108@reddit
It depends on the activities of the Montenegrin mafia ... if they keep a low profile, it could be quick. A single public incident could change everything.
Harisbaris@reddit
are their ladies qt 3.14s?
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Consider what will happen with Albania after 2028.
If Albania starts to close chapters soon enough it might catch the 2030 as a date. After this date no more countries could be absorbed as EU will become too large and will need to reform.
