I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that companies keep discontinuing their actual coupes and sedans but make coupe SUVs, but also SUVs are the highest selling segment because of practicality and we can’t get wagons.
The extra ride height feels like a negative in everything but ingress and egress.
I would argue at this point that people think they need the extra space the way people think they need a full size pick up truck. 100% there are plenty of people out there that use the space especially if you have kids and all of that. But so many people would have more than enough space in a coupe or four door sedan. Between me and my wife, her SUV has become the idea of a car that you think you need to have around, and then actually use for the space twice a year. It's like having the uncle with a pick up truck that you call twice a year because you need to pick up a table that you bought on marketplace.
The amount of people that have told me, including my wife, that they want an SUV because they feel safer up higher even if they don't use the space an SUV provides is crazy.
The amount of people that have told me, including my wife, that they want an SUV because they feel safer up higher even if they don't use the space an SUV provides is crazy.
Weird thing. I feel less safe driving SUVs than I do driving cars lol. I feel more vulnerable sitting up high because they are more sensitive to wind and flip over easily in collisions.
I love being down low. Also, just physics alone you're less safe being up high, the whole thing is counter intuitive.
What I really think is happening is that there are ao many SUVs on the road now that being down low in a car blocks your vision when you're behind an SUV, so people feel safer being in an SUV where they can see through the window ahead of them, etc.
I wonder if being up high would have the same effect back in the 90's when everyone drove sedans and everyone was equally as low as the other cars around them.
I've been buying new cars since I was 25. I'm 41 now and still have no problem getting in and out of my Taycan, which I also bought new.
Not sure why people on Reddit act like it's totally out of the realm of possibility that a college graduate with their first real job can't possibly afford a VW GTI, Elantra N, or Civic Si.
Consider 42% of college graduates can't find an entry level job with their degree. The average age of new-car buyer is 53 years-old. Young people can't afford new cars in general. Not in this dogshit climate with an insane COL.
I graduated right after the 2008 crash and couldn’t find a job either. I worked as a security guard for five years, but I found one eventually and I’m fine now.
Reddit acts like “I didn’t have a job lined up immediately after getting a diploma, therefore I will be in debt and unable to escape. Anyone who says to just keep applying is an out of touch boomer and my situation is wholly unique and unprecedented.”
The average age of a car buyer being 53 makes perfect sense? The age range of drivers is 16 to 76. That means by default the median age of all drivers is 46.
No one expects 16 year olds to buy brand new cars, though, so I’m not sure why people act like 53 is a wholly surprising statistic.

My initial point is that ingress and egress are only significant to older buyers and there are plenty of younger buyers in the market. Reddit likes to LARP that we are all working poor subsisting on beans and milled wheat, and anyone who drives a newer nicer car must be in crippling financial debt or 1%ers.
My nanny makes 60k/year with no college education. She has no student loan debt and a room mate with no dependents. If she needed to purchase a newer car, she’d be fine.
Exactly this. The average new car buyer's age has been ever increasing, and I think it's like mid forties now. No 45 y/o is bending to get into their car unless it's a mid-life crisis purchase... which is why even the modern Corvette has a "two sets of golf clubs" requirement.
This is just an anecdote... but twice now I've run into someone in their early 20s who thought small crossovers were COOL LOOKING. Like, cooler looking than a Mustang or 86 or Camaro or whatever.
We still have the hardcore sports cars. I would argue Porsche has never had as many great cars as today. What’s stopping you from buying a GT3 (normal or touring), GT3 RS, Carrera T, S/T, Turbo, GTS, 718 spider RS?
Probably money. If only they offered a new entry level sports car instead of the porker 911s we have now. maybe with a combustion engine in the middle…. 😁

Porsche's electric slowdown takes big bite out of profits. The company logged a net profit of just €90 million, compared to €5.3 billion in 2024. A 98% hit on profit.
So they're still profitable, and have billions of cash on hand.
I like how the article they posted blames electrification as the reason in the headline, but in the article itself they describe how it’s actually restructuring, U.S. tariffs, and a late decision to continue producing ICE models as the main reasons for the lost profits.
It almost looks Korean for some reason. You could slap a Kia badge on that thing and it would be believable.
Honestly, these days I can’t tell from 15 feet whether it’s a Merc, an Audi, or something coming out of Asia. Especially in Europe, where there are so many Chinese EVs on the road.
I mean, that's the entire point. They made their own homage to the old Defender with modern engineering when JLR decided to turn the Defender into a slightly more capable Discovery.
When did people start hating the Grenadier? It’s one of two(?) new vehicles still sold with a solid front axle in the US. That in of itself sets it apart from the seemingly infinite amount of badge engineered crossovers being sold today. In the current market it is 100% its own thing lol.
Nobody is hating, but the comment that it does its own thing styling-wise is nonsensical. It's a cool car but it openly heavily borrows from the Defender, and that's okay
It's a homage to the old Defender, noting that Ineos couldn't do what the Chinese OEMs do in their home market and just create a clone of the thing, ignoring all existing IP owned by JLR.
I agree, before for Mercedes you could tell it was at least an E/S class for the hood ornament(death ray when the sun shines in the right spot when driving), then they moved to at least 1-2-3 light strips for headlight/tail light to distinct between the classes but now they all look the same besides length.
Mercedes did the same sausage different length thing In the 80s and 90s with immense success, something everyone conveniently forgets. Some of their best cars were clones of each other looks wise.

I disagree. I think it very much looks like what Porsches have turned into these days. It's just that Porsche is on the thin horizontal strips for head and tail light bandwagon like so many others
Polestars and Volvos have a very angular design language which makes them distinctive.
From that side profile view we see in the main thread image, the only thing that makes this car identifiable as a Porsche is the quad LEDs in the headlights. And they're not unique to Porsche any more - Ford use them in the new Capri.
The article posted is in reference to an EV. No manual gearbox and absolutely no connection to the powertrain whatsoever. Interesting choice considering their financial struggles.
I've never been less excited at the announcement of a "Most powerful car ever" release.
1000+HP EV "Coupe SUV" has got to be the dumbest category of vehicle. A coupe is a 2 door car, an SUV is typically a taller 4 door utility vehicle (Hence U for utility). They make the car worse by having the smaller rear opening and slipping roof.
It reminds me of Paul Rudd in role models with all this BS naming for "hype". "Congratulations, you're stupid in 3 languages".
And no I'm not an EV hater. I'm actually really excited for some of the upcoming EVs.
Is anyone starting to get to the point of "Who the F' cares?"
The 0-60 wars are for manufacturers at this point, not for the consumer. Want to give everyone a migraine? Do repeated 2.5 second 0-60 pulls with them in the car! What a feature!
There are definitely people out there that use it and have fun with it, but I contend where car enthusiasts are becoming a smaller and smaller portion of car buyers, the people who actually use and enjoy 2.5 second pulls on a regular basis are an even smaller portion of the car enthusiast group.
Meanwhile we have cars doing 0-60 in under 2 seconds but having a manual transmission is almost non-existent now, and a good manual transmission even more so. There aren't even enough car enthusiasts that drive manuals to keep the manual transmission alive, which is a cornerstone of a good driving experience in a sports vehicle.

There are a range of cars approaching or exceeding 1000hp on the way. Some of the Chinese variants selling for under $100k USD.
When the Veyron came out as the first 1000hp car, it was extreme but rare and special. Next year you'll be able to buy an 1100hp 6000lb Chinese wagon for less than the price of a BMW 520i (Denza Z9 gt).
It seems like a bad idea, to put a bunch of lizard brained hairless apes behind so much power and weight, for a vehicle that's mostly going to be used to pick up kids from school and collect groceries.
It seems like a bad idea, to put a bunch of lizard brained hairless apes behind so much power and weight, for a vehicle that's mostly going to be used to pick up kids from school and collect groceries.
As a guy that does the school run every day in an old Honda Civic hatch I can say this is definitely a vibe. I feel like a seal among a pack of Killer Whales somedays.
The Macan EV I didn’t hate, but this thing looks like it was designed by a focus group for the Chinese market that - oops! - no longer wants overpriced European EVs. Such a wild miss.

6000lbs and 1000hp is just a recipe for disaster on regular roads.

As a guy that does the school run every day in an old Honda Civic hatch I can say this is definitely a vibe. I feel like a seal among a pack of Killer Whales somedays.

So is the ICE Cayenne. Big family SUVs are not exactly an exciting segment for enthusiasts no matter what fork of propulsion they have.
nolongerbanned99@reddit
Wow. They are desperate. Profits down 93%.

The Macan EV I didn’t hate, but this thing looks like it was designed by a focus group for the Chinese market that - oops! - no longer wants overpriced European EVs. Such a wild miss.
Training-Expert5598@reddit
Oof. There are misses, and then there are strikeouts.
