Is it a bad car tho
DoomDash@reddit
no, but neither is a g37 but they have a reputation.
GetawayDriving@reddit
My G37 was my least favorite car I’ve ever owned, and the only car I’ve ever purchased that I actively didn’t like.
fenderstratsteve@reddit
What was so bad about it?
GetawayDriving@reddit
I owned a TSX before it, a car that I adored. The TSX was good at everything - it was fun to drive with a fantastic manual, light & tossable, practical, economical, it felt premium above its class. That car was stolen, and the 2nd gen TSX didn’t appeal to me. So I went looking for a car that represented the same things. My TSX had been backed into and was in the shop for a couple of weeks, and I had received a G35 loaner. That G35 was a bit raucous and snarling and I had a ton of fun with it for those two weeks. So when it came time to replace the TSX that car was rattling around in my head and I went and bought the G37x.
The G37 felt heavy. Like very heavy. It had power, but that power was tuned to be an executive commuter. You had to put your foot heavy into it to coax that power from behind a wall of, “are you sure, i thought we were just cruising to the office this morning?”. The transmission was embarrassingly bad. Shifted quick enough but never at the right time, leaving the car feeling down on power. It was so bad I brought it back to the dealer 3 times asked them to check it or give it software updates or something. To their credit, they did (or so they said) but no improvement. For a car with plenty of power, it felt lethargic and confused. I was constant waiting for it to follow my commands, and imo that disconnect is a cardinal automatic sin. I want to feel at one with the car, not like I’m placing an order and waiting for delivery. The economy was atrocious. I wasn’t expecting it to sip like a civic but I was definitely surprised by worse gas mileage than my JK Wrangler. The interior materials felt cheap, economy car materials on the dash and touch points. The infotainment was useless, old and unusable, even adjusting for 2011 expectations. Maybe the car was better in manual trim, but I knew after a month I wanted something different and after 2 years, I was glad to be rid of it.
not-a-toad@reddit
Interesting… i owned a g37 but didn’t feel that way about it at all. It was a manual rwd one though, maybe that’s why
fenderstratsteve@reddit
Now I get it. I had a 2007 G35S RWD 5at and that thing was great. The interior tech was bad (perhaps not in 2007), but by 2010 it felt dated. My dad had a 2010 G37xS and although I enjoyed driving it for different reasons, it was heavier, the awd built in the delay you’re talking about, and the 7at liked to hunt. So, I agree with your assessment. The G37 was reliable like the G35, better on gas (if you can believe it!), but your other points are valid.
Track2Trail@reddit
I had the same G35 in 2007 and I loved it. Was one of the quickest cars of its time too
fenderstratsteve@reddit
For its class, it was. The journalists at the time bitched that it was rough in the high rev range, but that HR engine was great. I did brakes and the power steering cooler, one O2 sensor, and front wheel bearings the entire time I had it. I had a 2004 G35x (DE) before that and it was a good car but not even close to the HR. Front end issues (control arms, bushings), and the camshaft position sensor (bank 2) which caused it to shut down while driving. Still solid but less so with more headache.
DoomDash@reddit
I had a G35X (HR) with the 5AT, and a G37 with the 6MT. The experience you're describing does not sound anything like mine. I used to work for Infiniti when I had mine, and I do remember some transmission firmware updates for the 7AT, I wonder how much of your complaints were related to that.
I do know people usually preferred the 5AT for its aggressiveness, and of course the 6MT was godly. If there would have been an X with a 6MT I'd still probably have one, despite the bad community. I love the RWD bias.
GetawayDriving@reddit
A lot of my complaints stemmed from the transmission. It remains to this the only (non-EV) automatic I’ve ever owned. It was likely also a misalignment of expectations. I wanted something fun to drive, this was an executive cruiser that, like most executives I’ve known, didn’t know how to use the power they had effectively.
Carbonbuildup@reddit
G37 is the modern IROC. Owners think they can gap the space shuttle
Downtown_Reward_6339@reddit
Love this perfect analogy
J-Rag-@reddit
All Hyundai's are bad
c0sm0nautt@reddit
It's probably the best value in terms of pure power. Personally the looks of it are a little too boy racer, but if I was in my 20s I'd probably dig it. GTI is much more refined but cost a bit more
diabeetusNrobin@reddit
S for Sport, R for Racing, M for Motorsport.
What dafuq does N stand for? Lol
Also the car looks awkward aesthetically
Careless-Trick-5117@reddit
N stands for Namyang (location of the N HQ) and Nurburgring, where they test all their cars
diabeetusNrobin@reddit
Huh interesting, TIL. Bold choice nonetheless, though I guess it’s not as wild as Gazoo Racing lol
xcoderookie@reddit
Hyundai deserves every bit of hate that it receives. I say that because I owned a Hyundai and it was by far the least reliable vehicle I've driven over the past 35 years.
Tony-cums@reddit
The new ones are so much better!!! 4th decade In a row now! They’ve finally figured it out.
2036! The new ones are good, though! Not like the crap from the 2020s!
xcoderookie@reddit
I’ll take your word for it. But if I’m spending my own money on a vehicle, I’ll get a brand that has personally proven to be reliable like a Toyota or a Ford over a Hyundai, while hoping that they have gotten better
Tony-cums@reddit
That was total sarcasm. Hyundai people keep moving the goal posts.
3dl33@reddit
Ford is the #1 recalled car lol
hey-Oliver@reddit
Counter jerk to all the Elantra N owners posting online about how it’s the greatest car to ever exist when it’s still a FWD econobox
HowsMyBuddy@reddit
What letter was it in 1992? I had that Elantra. Boy, was that some hot garbage.
80s-quicksand@reddit
I used to work at Hertz in the 90s. In order to get people to upgrade (which got me a bonus) I would put people in Elantras exclusively. Almost everyone paid the upgrade fee to get out of that cheap death trap. Even if they didn’t do it right away they would often come back after driving a few miles.
HowsMyBuddy@reddit
I had to drive half an hour down the mountain to get to high school in 1996. From a mile high to 1000 feet. Snow in the winter. Worked 2 jobs to save up 1500 bucks, dad said he’d pay 3500 so I could get a $5k car. I wanted a cherry ‘83 Toyota 4x4, but “trucks aren’t economical” he said, so I ended up with a ‘92 Elantra that had 88k miles. Dad didn’t admit to mistakes very often, but within a week, he felt even worse about it than I did. And I had to drive that piece of shit. And sometimes push it. Fucking rag for a gas cap!
Ajpeterson@reddit
That’s actually genius
thePunisher1220@reddit
The drivers are usually super cocky and think they drive the best car on the planet, when in reality, everyone knows you just couldn't afford the Type R
Also, elantra N owners are all convinced their cars sound great, and put loud exhausts on them, when in reality, they sound like shit. I'm all for loud exhausts, but your car has to sound good to warrant a loud exhaust.
dutchman76@reddit
3 strikes
PowerSpool@reddit
Elantra N owners be fighting imaginary haters lol.
Edumacated_Guess@reddit
It pretty ugly.
bornecrosseyed@reddit
There is not much hate on Elantra n’s
Revolutionary_Cry884@reddit
It’s a great performance car especially at the price point and Hyundai’s design house has really been progressive. But Hyundai may never lose that econobox stigma and the poor dealer network doesn’t help.
Nodnardsemaj@reddit
I hate all Hyundais equally, thank you very much 🤭
Dizzy_Implement_9148@reddit
Cause a lot of similar better cars exist at that price point
DetectiveNarrow@reddit
Cuz it’s better than a type R despite it being around all these years. You get a type R now if you just already were a Honda fan. Otherwise, it does everything the R does and you’re not paying as much a markup. That’s just my take tho
Kernalpanic87@reddit
Love or hate my answer: it’s a Hyundai
dubgeek@reddit
I've not encountered much hate for them. I don't think it looks good, at all, but it's got decent performance and I think it sounds great.
hightweaks@reddit
Me personally I was raised to stay away from Kia products and shop Toyota/lexus and Honda/acura. I had a family member with mutiple different Kia sedans (new off the lot) and they all shit out before 100k miles and the person driving it is old so I know they didn’t beat on it
seanx50@reddit
It's so noisy
fenderstratsteve@reddit
I don’t know if there is no ‘comfort’ drive mode to close the valves, but I can tell when my buddy is idling in my work parking garage 50 metres away, it’s that loud. It’s louder than my SQ5. Another guy at work has a Macan GTS and it’s louder than that. I think it’s even louder than a W205 C43 with the AMG exhaust. So, I dislike that it’s trying so hard.
seanx50@reddit
I drove one. There is a slightly less loud mode. Driving one is exhausting
Beneficial-Door-3985@reddit
What’s a Elantra N?
Wake-N-Ache@reddit
Elantra N is pretty obsolete when the Golf R has the RS3 engine.
Petrifalcon3@reddit
And the Golf R is almost double the price
Wake-N-Ache@reddit
LOL twice the price?
There’s a $6000~ difference you’re smoking crack
Petrifalcon3@reddit
$35000 starting MSRP on an Elantra N. $49000 on a Golf R. Maybe not twice the price, but a hell of a lot more than $6000 difference. Enough to put them in different price brackets.
Wake-N-Ache@reddit
$52k MSRP. I stand corrected. Golf R isn’t worth it at that price. But Elantra N isn’t worth $35k+ either
TarponTalker@reddit
But it doesn’t?
New_Breadfruit8692@reddit
They are fugly.
Cool-Bunch6645@reddit
I just don’t think it looks good enough for it to be recommended as often as it is against the other cars in its class even if it outperforms them. At least the Velostiraptors looked cool
Tuques@reddit
Its an adorable 4 banger and nothing more. But people seem to expect it to be a performance monster for some reason.
FrankieTheAlchemist@reddit
I hadn’t heard any 🤷♂️
ExcellentWinner7542@reddit
Because they suck.
s4ltydog@reddit
I… don’t even think about the Elantra N.
GetawayDriving@reddit
I haven’t seen much hate on Elantra N. I think it’s silly to hate on cars but if you’re asking me why someone would, I’d guess because Hyundai has a reputation as inferior to the likes of Honda, Subaru, BMW, etc. you know other brands that make compelling sports sedans. Hyundais have a somewhat deserved reputation for flaws, from engines that give out early to being so easy to steal that some insurance companies stopped covering them.
But the N is a decent car dynamically as far as sporty sedans go, it represents a relative value and looks nice. Even the regular Elantra has a pretty nice chassis feel, and the N builds on that.
But hey you’re posting on several subs about the N which means you’re 1. A bot 2. Hyundai astroturf 3. A kid who is dreaming of their first ride. I’m assuming the last one. There are many amazing cars, no need to put all your loyalty into one.
Drewdc90@reddit
Is there?
bigcee42@reddit
Badge snobbery mostly.
SenorISO54@reddit
Love mine, really the perfect complement to my Miata in my price range 🤷♂️
