Two somewhat related rants.
I’m struggling to find regular non-smart appliances. I was thinking of swapping a few things out but I refuse to have an internet connection on my oven.
My husband went to get new glasses last week and they were pushing Meta glasses like crazy. He’s in the medical field and he told them he can’t have them because of HIPAA laws(and he doesn’t want them). They tried to argue that they are HIPAA compliant. One of his coworkers had the same thing happen to them at a different optometrist. Creeps me out.
pomonalost@reddit
On 2. Zenni is reliable. They have ai blocking lenses as well.

You still have to be your eyes tested at a regular office
pennydreadful20@reddit
$99 at any Costco. Just FYI.
Artistic-Salary1738@reddit
Only if your vision isn’t bad. Mine were almost $200 last time I think (and I had the frames already).
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Our insurance covers it 100%.
pennydreadful20@reddit
Nice! Wish mine did.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
My husband’s employer has a lot of flaws but the insurance is unbelievable.
pomonalost@reddit
Well, yeah. I was just saying for frames and lenses.
maeryclarity@reddit
Love Zenni they're awesome
QuixoticTilting@reddit
I work in data security for a hospital. They are absolutely not HIPAA compliant. If there even were a version of them that could be used in a hospital environment, it would be sold to the hospital directly, not to Joe Normal at his eye appointment.
Sea_One_6500@reddit
Ugh, I have to go to the eye doctor next week. Like glasses aren't expensive enough (lenses anyway, I have terrible vision). Maybe I'll just shut them down with that. Thanks for the heads up.
goddessofolympia@reddit
Get them online through Zenni. My prescription is -15, and I got nice glasses for less than $100 shipped, with 1.76 high-index lenses. The frames were $6.95 of that.
engineered_academic@reddit
FWIW I got new glasses the other day and they didnt try to pressure me.
Sea_One_6500@reddit
Thanks, I hope my experience is the same!
EastTyne1191@reddit
My assumption about things like Meta glasses and smart ovens is that someday we'll have to pay subscription fees to actually be able to use our appliances for regular every day use.
Dear Valued Customer,
Your SmartVision payment has not been received this month. Your service will be downgraded to BasicVision, which provides vision services between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm. To maintain your SmartVision services, please make a payment no later than 11:59 pm, EST.
Introducing, new UltraVision! For a fee of $35.99 per month, your Meta glasses can be utilized to see the world in UV!
The above is a dramatization and is not meant to represent the current or future capabilities of Meta glasses.
chicagotodetroit@reddit
There’s an episode of Black Mirror about something similar except it wasn’t an appliance it was a brain surgery.
Illustrious-Nose3100@reddit
That episode was crazy and probably exactly where we are headed
CryptidWorks@reddit
The subscription appliances themselves also turned up in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
jazbay0712@reddit
I thought of Common People too! Creepy to think that's what we're headed towards and disheartening to not see any real way to stop or avoid it.

SpacemanLost@reddit
I first went online about 45 years ago, and have made it a point in recent years to only get 'dumb' appliances (if possible).
We've refreshed most of our appliances as part of our house remodeling over the last 5 years, but a few things are pretty difficult to get without built-in 'smarts' and wifi. My Generac and garage door openers are examples of these. We recently got a SpeedQueen washer and dryer in part for this reason, the other being durability.
For the last 6-7 years there have been increasing rumors about devices like TVs connecting to any unsecured wifi network they happen to find in range and even more concerning - treating the setup option to not connect/not setup wifi as "don't connect to any wifi which requires credentials to connect to". A lot of this comes down to how much you can trust the companies that make the appliances, especially given that selling customer data has become an ever increasing component of their corporate revenue. ... or .. sending data back to the manufacturer's home country such as China.
There is a separate issue with automobiles. Every Car for some time now has a built-in celluar modem - for over 20 years for some brands and models. This bypasses the need to connect to Wifi or be setup by you. The auto manufactures are able to purchase bulk data SIMS from the carriers pretty cheaply to use cellular networks. Most of the time, but not always, they are not listening to your in car conversations, but consider how Voice Commands work, and look at the history of Law Enforcement using services like GM's OnStar to listen into in-car conversations decades ago.
And like other companies, all the automakers collect is sold to paying customers. Today many regular features on new cars require that you setup an online account with the manufacturer to even enable (I'm looking at you Honda). That's not including things they want to sell you subscriptions for like real-time traffic data.
My current daily driver (a 2011 model) has stopped snitching on me only because it was the only model variant in its line that a 4G modem upgrade was not made available for, and 3G cellular service was recently sunsetted to free up the spectrum.
I mention cars because there is no technical or regulatory reason to prevent home appliances or systems like HVAC from including cellular modems in the future. We might first see that in something like new AC systems with a justification such as "so that the local municipality can temporarily shut them off to reduce demand on the grid during a heat wave to avoid brown outs" (something I experienced first hand in my apartment in Texas 18 years ago).
Anyway, I hope this adds some food for thought for everyone here.
SuccessWise9593@reddit
There isn't going to be any regular cars next year. All are going to be doing surveillance on us or they won't work.

We've already planned with our next move / house to scour Facebook marketplace for an older stove & washer. I refuse for the stove to be anything digital or require electric to start a gas stove. Ditto on the washer - I want an old school water hog washer because stuff comes clean. We have pets and get actually dirty not just a light soil and the newer ones just leave stuff dirty. I might even go really old school and grab a vintage 30's washer if I can find one.
no9lovepotion@reddit
I have an old school Kenmore wash and dryer and they work fine. Twice my bf had to replace something in the washer that makes it spin.
maeryclarity@reddit
OMG isn't the "must have electricity to start your damn gas stove" thing crazy making?
Caelista_x@reddit
Have you looked at induction ranges? We bought a cheap Frigidaire model a few years ago and we love it. It’s energy efficient and there’s no internet connection.
dawn_thesis@reddit
We call them "glassholes" here. I won't talk to or look at anyone wearing smart glasses, and would put reviews online if any medical professional was wearing them.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Hospital admin and the board of nursing would eat anyone alive for trying to wear those.
NoTerm3078@reddit
This a bit weird but you can search to see your closest Habitat for Humanity ReStore that sells used things like that. It's random what they have, but I have seen used stoves there. We have a church near us that does the same, take old stoves etc out of homes when they are being replaced and pass them along. 2 years ago we had to buy a fridge and the lead time was 8 months for a very basic non-smart 90s style top freezer and bottom fridge.
crumblednewman@reddit
I am also anti-smart appliance. There's a guy in town who refurbishes appliances and resells them which is where I found a washer with three simple dials like what I grew up with. On year five with no issues. Maybe ask around on your local reddit subs, maybe you will luck out and find "a guy."
missbwith2boys@reddit
Not sure if you’re looking for gas or electric, but FiveStar (not bluestar) makes a solid basic gas range, pro-style. Not even a timer.
I had one installed in my previous house back in 1997; still featured prominently in kitchen photos every time that house sells.
I bought one for this kitchen too; likely to be the last one I need to buy. Easy to repair.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Electric.
fairoaks2@reddit
There are places that restore and sell vintage appliances. An antique or vintage mall might have an older stove too.
Dapper_dreams87@reddit
If it helps, most of the time the appliance does not need to be hooked up to the internet. We have a smart washer and dryer but I have never even attempted to hook them up, just check and see if it's required. Otherwise look for rental grade stuff. Not high end but I do prefer the non high end stuff anyways.
The meta glasses thing is insane.
MurkyCartoonist9944@reddit
I bought a Bosch dishwasher. Never connected it to the internet. As a commenr Bosch is great - super quiet. Never go back to a cheaper brand.
thereadingbri@reddit
To your first point, ask for appliance models landlords buy. They will be stripped down of bells and whistles and of a higher quality (in terms of not needing repairs and lasting a while) than ones sold to homeowners.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
That sounds like what I’m looking for. Basic and bulletproof.
deerfawns@reddit
Second point is insane lol. You just know they're collecting data like crazy from those.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
They are 100% NOT HIPAA compliant.
Drycabin1@reddit
They are probably hugely overstocked on the meta glasses.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
They have to order them. Like I said, weird.
dittybopper_05H@reddit
The distaffbopper and I both got new glasses recently, her a couple weeks ago, me less than 6 months ago. No one even mentioned Meta to us, much less pushed them. Maybe it was just your particular optometrist.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Nope. Like I said his coworker had the same thing happen at a completely different place.
A-Supurb-Owl@reddit
I bought a smart washing machine and just never connected it to WiFi or an app. Works fine without it.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
A lot of them block functions if they’re not connected.
gonyere@reddit
Yes. Connect them and then black list the connection on your router
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I shouldn’t have to do that. If I’m spending thousands I want to be able to use what I paid for without having to fuck around.
International-Sink64@reddit
same with my smart oven, just never connected it.
pomonalost@reddit

If you are looking for NG stove, look for Premier brand stoves. No timers, clock, etc. There is no electric or constant pilot light. You use batteries for ignition, always works in power outages. You can even light the burner yourself if batteries die but they last years. Lowe's carried them. The stove is tough, not at all fancy but a workhorse.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
It has to be electric
HowsMyBuddy@reddit
Shite. I was just about to say how we recently bought a nice fridge that has no screen on it, so no “smart” horseshit. And then I realized that this new fridge is showing up on our network. I’ve been taken.

robkahil@reddit
I may going full conspiracy theorist here, but over 90% of the time, my phone never gets above two bars of signals. A lot of the time, it's only one bar. My family uses Verizon, but I can't help thinking something is wrong with the general connectivity of wireless devices. Satellite problems? Solar storms? Really shitty phone line infrastructure?
Artistic-Salary1738@reddit
I have AT&T, it’s definitely gotten way worse and it seemed to be when 5G became a thing and I got a phone that used it
MistyMtn421@reddit
I have Verizon and my crappy old 4g phone typically has more bars than my 1yo Galaxy on 5g. I think the 5g in my area sucks. Even in certain parts where I may have more bars of 5g I still drop calls and miss texts.
robkahil@reddit
They're definitely not making them like they used too
Impossible_Range6953@reddit
Ok I thought it was just me. On Verizon and my phone has only been showing 2/3 bars for the last month. I am in north east.
MistyMtn421@reddit
So I am on Verizon (in central WV, populated area, normally good service) my dad is also on Verizon (nw suburbs of Chicago) and especially this past week but in general, have had lots of service issues. Really started around end of January for both of us.
robkahil@reddit
Yeah I'm glad it wasn't just me either. I hadn't heard of many people noticing it either. Thought I was going looney 😅
Impossible_Range6953@reddit
Thanks to you I did a deep dive lol. Which reminded me of the bigger outage verizon had beginning of this year. There are also some outage news stories here and there but very local.
I think the company is doing some major changes and hoping it wont impact users much. Supposedly they are preparing for the world cup this summer.
Wise_Artichoke6552@reddit
I have a similar issue, though not to that extent. Sometimes my phone will like, take a day off, and I'll have terrible connectivity, nothing will load, Discord will eat my messages, and then it'll be totally fine the next day. The thing is, every phone I've had since the 2020 does this, and it never seems to line up with anyone else's phone issues.
MurkyCartoonist9944@reddit
I notice my i-phone freezes once a day every day. Turning it on and off fixes it, but annoying. Data seems ok mostly
robkahil@reddit
I've noticed that with newer phones too; I've only needed a new phone once in the past seven years, and while this was an upgrade, it's not THAT much better in terms of dealing with all the software updates, much less minor glitches
International-Sink64@reddit
same, my service with verizon has been different recently...lots of dead spots and only one or two bars.
robkahil@reddit
UPDATE: a tornado warning came out of nowhere just a few miles south of us here in New Orleans. Lol... the storm was supposed to be north of us. Nothing said THIS was coming at us.

Oh for sure, but it's still wild to see in action. Hurricane season is going to be interesting. Or boring (hopefully)
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
There’s going to be a strong El Niño so the Atlantic should be quieter than average
Drycabin1@reddit
Exactly! We woke up to the sirens out here in St Charles Parish!
robkahil@reddit
I'm in Algiers! No sirens but that phone blast always gets my ass out of bed. I knew something felt funky. The sky was greenish
Drycabin1@reddit
It was greenish here, too!
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
When?
robkahil@reddit
Thr tornado warning was de-issued at 7:45, but it was in Belle Chasse, heading southeast into Lafitte
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
Nothing says nice Saturday morning like a tornado! Do you have a weather radio?
robkahil@reddit
We do actually. I should've used it.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I’ve got into the habit of turning it on when the weather looks iffy. Our internet goes out if a squirrel farts and weather apps are just ads at this point.
robkahil@reddit
Hurricane season is encroaching. This is an excellent idea.
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
A regular battery powered radio is also helpful. At least when the powers out you can listen to NPR and get angry at politicians 😂
And let’s face it the only stations that come through clear after a hurricane are screaming about Jesus, Spanish, screaming about Jesus in Spanish, and NPR.
robkahil@reddit
Yeah on basic principle I don't listen to radio anymore for those reasons lol. Our current emergency radio is solar and/or crank operated
VariousFalcon7466@reddit
I only listen to it as a last resort. The regular stations all suck anyway
msomnipotent@reddit
I've been having problems too, but I've been getting a lot of notifications from the space weather live app about solar flares.
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
I honestly think they're purposefully limiting the data rates.
robkahil@reddit
I could see it, I'm just not tech savvy enough to figure out; to what end?
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Saving electric, and maybe some service life of the hardware, or just overloading the hardware.
Coolbreeze1989@reddit
In the last few days I have had weirdly spotty service. Like, move my phone 5” and I lose reception. Never had issues in these micro-spots in my home before (cell AND WiFi).
thereadingbri@reddit
I get 5 bars sometimes now, but the internet on my phone when using data locks up almost immediately with that many bars. Nothing will load, it’s worse than having only one bar a lot of the time. Been happening a couple years and it makes no sense.
robkahil@reddit
That shit happens too, like, I swear I used to be able to use both at the same time but now I have to outright shut wifi off to use the mobile data.
AlwayInForwardMotion@reddit
Colorado here. I have Verizon and when the tourists start to arrive for the summer my phone starts to slow way down. Putting it on airplane mode a few times a day gets me back to the top of the pile and the bars come back up.
robkahil@reddit
I've never heard of the airplane mode trick. Thanks!
90plusWPM@reddit
Just to add a different perspective - I'm in New England and have noticed the total opposite. I have increasingly good reception including in areas that were previously dead zones (more remote parts of CT and ME). I have AT&T but almost everyone else I know has Verizon, maybe I should ask their experience to see if theirs is better/worse/the same, I'm intrigued
robkahil@reddit
I have AT&T Fiber. That's actually quite good, but I don't remember how AT&T was when we had their phone service when I was a kid. It's interesting to read that phone signals are getting better in rural parts.
International-Sink64@reddit
I've noticed more and more times where I can't get a signal or it's really weak
robkahil@reddit
Yeah, more outright dead zones. It seems to be street by street... caveat, I do live in New Orleans... so... still
RhinoPillMan@reddit
You’re not trippin. I have Visible and Tracfone which use Verizon, and an MVNO hotspot that uses T-Mobile. They’ve all been super laggy lately, even in areas where they were always fast.

It was used ceramics and sewing patterns, solid metal shelving, and aluminum raised beds.

Q: Do you have backup plans to access internet should it not be available via cell phone data and your internet provider? If so, how do you prep for that? Or if your prep for that scenario focus on offline activities instead?
(This was inspired by the comment on worsening cell phone signals.)
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
The real question is "what data do you need live access to"?
Primary thing, invest in better receiving / antenna, good signal is a massive boon even in normal times. Directional antennas can be insanely powerful when set up correctly too.
My immediate "Backup" is a pretty serious NAS system with more than enough games and movies to keep me entertained for months. More DIY book, manual / reference books, maps of all sorts, downloaded forums, than I could read in a lifetime. The r/DataHoarder level of storage and piracy path I went down has helped me immensely even in good times, as many things have gone offline or have been lost even in just the 15 years I've been doing it. Like data on engineering discussions men have poured entire livelihoods into, certain forums fail, and that information just becomes lost to rumor / myth as knowledge fades into "lost arts" as generations die.
Second, Radio... humble radios, can take you a long ways. Mesh networks are also growing quickly.
Three, being able to move the physical data storage. Countless times I've moved 80gb+ 4k non-compressed movies or large game files to other locations to share. Such a file in rural settings would take an extremely long time to download otherwise.
angrytetchy@reddit
Just a point: James Spann had been talking about the outbreak forecasted for at least a couple of days before hand (mentioned during his and Jason Simpson's live coverages, archived here (AM coverage) and here (full PM coverage from 2-11 pm) along with the official ones from ABC 33/40) - the forecasts are getting very good. Remains to be seen how long that NOAA can continue to have these excellent forecasts with funding cuts. Not sure I trust the digital meteorologists over NOAA but that could wind up changing.

funke75@reddit
I would love to learn more about the forums you mentioned, which topics are they on ? Where did you find them?
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Firearms, engine building, hacking, military stuff... like... you'd be surprised just how often smaller forums of specialized experiences fail / die out for one reason or another.
For instance I'm in the process of modifying a medium duty cummins engine right now, and what I want to do with swapping certain model crank shafts really seriously hasn't been done by many people outside of tractor pulling. There are TONS of things mechanically like that, that literally swap out between brands / models even that get lost / never really officially get listed. Like transmissions ... there are TONS that can swap gearsets out to make the vehicle cruise better. My one project car has a super tall VW van final gearset in it along with a shorter 1st gear . . . can literally be swapped out on a bench... I'm one of maybe three? guys running that final gearset though... only because its a serious touring project car, it's like 3 steps lower than the typical swap. Anyways, not many people at all report on "that it works" yet alone the issues that can come with it, and sometimes that just gets buried, or worse yet AI makes some crap up off of it and buries the real answer / experience.
The military stuff gets buried all the time for security reasons, its getting scary how fast they can take things down. So to keep anything off that you ahve to download it quick.
funke75@reddit
Any chance you could point me in a direction for any of those downloads? I’m working on my own offline data hub and those types of resources sound extremely useful
AntiSonOfBitchamajig@reddit (OP)
Phhh, r/DataHoarder to start, then theres venturing into the piracy and open source forums in how to start collecting useful media. Like right now im trying to update mapping apps / re-downloading OpenStreetMap (since they've added so damn much in the last couple years. Honestly surprising amount of data in those maps alone....
Big_Fortune_4574@reddit
I have a starlink for that
RhinoPillMan@reddit
I’m not too huge on data hoarding, but I have books, tutorial videos, and other stuff (movies, TV, etc) stored on my mini PC and phones. I also have Meshtastic nodes and GMRS radios for communication in case I have to get ahold of my sister. Depends on what you mean; if the entire internet goes down globally, there’s not much you could do to still access it. Even with satellite like Starlink, there’s servers you’d be trying to connect to are based here on the planet.

I feel simultaneously thankful to be in the position I am in terms of resilience for natural disasters (we did a month after Helene with no grid power or cell/internet), economic downturn, climate change, etc. and just completely, entirely unprepared. I’m desperate for another decade of pre-2020 everything so I can finish getting my shit together.
We’re both better off and more prepared than any of my friends and most of my spouse’s friends (not out of lack of interest and awareness on their parts), so it’s not something I can really talk about to them without feeling like I’m complaining from a really enviable position.

Got my garden planted. We'll see how well I do this time on Lazy Gardening (I literally toss seeds out and say vaya con Dios and maybe weed/water when I remember and feel like risking the flies and mosquitoes. Also I'm in Hawaii - there is no cold season die-off) I went with a 3 Sisters approach with corn, peas, and butternut squash with a spare cucumber and tomato seedlings. The māmāke is still doing well and I got a new kukui seedling! I'm trying to re-native my local landscape a bit while still being practical about what I actually eat. (Midwest born, Southern raised, with a enough of spicy brain to make some foods an absolutely not.)
Noticing personally some breaks in my mental health with all the stressors of the world and I know I should just go spend some time in the ocean or roam around some of the nature parks - I'm just having a hard enough time justifying existing as a lump, let alone getting up and moving.
Still know where my towel is though, so I'm ready for Thursdays. Tuesdays are more shaky in the area of readiness.

I mentioned these things to my doctor in conversation, but his response was discomforting. He said that my “hobbies” were interesting, but shifted the conversation. Apparently, my blood results are “concerning”, my “ankles are swollen” and I have “signs of alcohol-induced psychosis, including extreme paranoia and catastrophizing”. He recommended I see a “specialist”, which I’m fine with in principle. I mean, I see a chiropractor and palm reader every moon cycle. But get this: the route from my compound to the “specialist” has 12 Flock cameras, and 2 police stations within 10 miles of the route. I’m starting to suspect he has it out for me. I may have to abandon the idea of classically trained medicine, because this is the 4th incident in the last 2 years where they wanted me to “cut back on alcohol with medical assistance”. As if that matters when the world is about to fall apart. These idiots just don’t get it.
I know from reading these forums many of you have had this same experience, so please let me know how you’ve dealt with it. Thank you

It's interesting how obvious things seem from the outside but to the person actually experiencing it, that's just reality and that things seem perfectly rational. That slow path to the situation is normalized every day for them so they don't see the trajectory.

If you wanna know something crazy this is what pops up on my counties police scanner group. From the hearsay I’ve heard around it sounds like they arrested the guy who made the threat. Grant county, Indiana is a crazy little backwater place, but this is crazy even for that area.
