The Big 6-0 is Just Around the Corner

I'm turning 60 in a couple of months and I guess it's worrying me more than I want to admit - any words of advice?
Chemical_Author7880@reddit
Same. In August.
My dad’s family die between 57-63, so that’s fun.
And I still don’t have my shit completely together.
And my husband is 47.
My intention, and advice to you, is ignore it.
CharlieLeigh51@reddit
You inherited your longevity marker from your mother, so hopefully her side of the family has a long life expectancy. My father and his father both died at 62, but my mother is still kicking at 87. Her mother lived to be 92. I’m 57 and I don’t think I will be dead at 62. Also, I do not have my shit together either and probably won’t by 60.
Chemical_Author7880@reddit
That is possible. Mom’s parents lived until their 90s. But her dad developed dementia in his 70s. No idea if it is in dad family, because they die to young.
But I have a 1 in 4 chance of getting old and not having some sort of dementia.
So, fingers crossed.🤞 😉
CharlieLeigh51@reddit
Learn a new skill. It creates a spark that strengthens the myelin sheath in your brain which can increase one’s lifespan. Do you play an instrument? If not, pick-up the guitar and reinvent yourself by forming a band. Yes, I’m serious. My 79 year old neighbor taught himself guitar by watching YouTube videos, and now he’s teaching me!
timothypjr@reddit
As a fellow near 60 er, just stay active, reduce alcohol intake, quit smoking, and eat better. That's about all I know.
Ill_Pressure3893@reddit
Cheer up.
Because, meanwhile, the very oldest Gen Xers have been turning 65 this year.
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
This thread is full of 60 year olds. Turning 30, 40 didn’t feel like a big deal to me, but now I’m going to hit 50 being born in ‘76. How was that mentally for you all? It feels like “oh no I may actually be old” now. There are 50 year old grandparents and I still have teenagers.
MariChloe@reddit
Yeah I became a grandma at 42
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
I can’t imagine, did you feel old because kids age the heck out of you, or did you still feel young because you literally were? 42 is practically 30s.
MariChloe@reddit
Young very young!
Old_Goat_Ninja@reddit
50 was nothing, same with 40. Neither of them meant anything, nor did I feel any kind of way about. Turning 30 though, that one was rough. I don’t know why, but I felt like I was turning into an old man at 30. Maybe because in my teens everyone over 30 seemed old, looked old, etc. Remember the show Thirtysomething, the show about old people? 30 is nothing these days, and ours, 30 is still very young, but at the time 30 felt like a major milestone to me.
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
Oh yeah, 30-something... adults. Somehow I barely feel like an adult inside, I'm just the same idiot I was in the 90s but now I'm a poser in an executive setting. I think the old thing is two-fold, my skin gave out a little a few years back and my wife is 6 years younger and still passes for late 20s.
JanaT2@reddit
I had a hard time with 40. 50 was fine it’s all good
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
To me it felt like 20-34 was an age and 35-49 is an age and now I’ll be in the 50-64 bracket which is right behind 65-dead.
Own_Celebration5462@reddit
I had a harder time turning 45 and 55 than 40 or 50. Something about hitting the 5 and realizing that you’re closer to the next decade than the previous one hit me weird.
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
That was both helpful and mean. Now I fear 55 too :)
user0987234@reddit
50, mentally meh. 55 was worse. You feel the age more. You know you are forgetting things. Such is life.
CooperSat@reddit
Just turned on April 24th. Would lay in bed at night and roll it around in my head for months. My two daughters came up with a great weekend and I, much like George Bailey, am a very rich man! It doesn’t matter my friend, go live!
beeepboh@reddit
Have a fun party!🥳
Drewzilla_@reddit
Denial is the key
bikardi01@reddit (OP)
That reminds me- I haven't traveled as much as I would've liked.
Nickk66@reddit
Turned 60 in January, it’s just fucking weird that I’m 60. I thought life would be slower at this age but still working and trying to get to a point where I have enough to step back and do some less demanding work
english_major@reddit
Turned 60 over a year ago then immediately retired. I’ve traveled for seven months since. In Portugal right now. I figure that my 60s are going to be amazing. So far so good.
HHSquad@reddit
How do like living in Portugal? Are you an American ex-pat?
Its on my short list of places to retire to.
english_major@reddit
Neither. Just a Canadian traveler.
We have been traveling in Portugal for the past five weeks and are loving it. This is part of a three month trip through Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
Last year we spent three months in NZ and Australia as well as four weeks in central Mexico.
We have no interest in being expats. We love our place on the Canadian west coast. Winters are cool and wet though.
HHSquad@reddit
Nice, Canadian West coast is a good place to be it seems.
I'm tired of the drama in my country, I don't want all this in retirement.
NoKing9900@reddit
I turned 60 last December. I’m living in Lisbon now. Where are you in Portugal.
english_major@reddit
On the bus from Lagos to Lisbon right now. We started in Madeira, then Porto, Guimaraes, Lisbon, fisherman’s trail then Lagos. We’ll be in Lisbon five nights before heading home (which we left in January).
PossibleDiscipline90@reddit
I still have a few more corners to go around yet lol
LynahRinkRat@reddit
You will never be this young again.
One of my favorite neighbors is 93. He is doing great, and refers to me and my spouse as "you kids." I love him.
makeup1508@reddit
my stepdad does that too. if he's on the phone when my sis & I are there he'll say the kids are here-my sis is 4 years older than me.
makeup1508@reddit
I turn 60 in a couple months also. My husband is over 60 and other than a few more aches and pains he's in great physical condition so I'm not too worried.
Mindless-Employment@reddit
I remember working at a high school band camp and overhearing one girl who was around 17 talking about some guy on the staff she thought was cute. The other girl said "Ewww! He's like 25!"
makeup1508@reddit
Ready_Sky_4253@reddit
What. I’m not even 50 yet.
MiddleAgedBitcoiner@reddit
I hit 60 at the end of the year. I’m not looking forward to it
Justasadgrandma@reddit
I'm also turning 60 in a few months. It doesn't bother me at all. I don't celebrate birthdays. I'm already sick and on disability. I broke my second hip in January. Idk what else can go wrong, but I had a complete heart exam and my ticker is good. My carotid artery is flowing great. I'm just working with the hand I was dealt. Life goes on, until it doesn't. I'm not afraid of that either.
EntrancePotential595@reddit
I turned 60 in March. I fucking hate it.
LissyVee@reddit
I turn 60 next Tuesday. People say it's just a number - but it's a fucking BIG number and I absolutely cannot wrap my head around it.
I swear I was 17 only five minutes ago. If someone asked me how old I felt, I'd probably say 45, 48 something like that.
One of my school friends passed away at New Year, another on Good Friday. It's a sobering thought to realise that there are more yesterdays than there are tomorrows.
Still, it's better than the alternative.
bikardi01@reddit (OP)
I agree fully and I am comfortable with the situation and thankful for the years I've had, but the I wake up at 3:00 in the morning and the thoughts hit. I know better than to listen to early morning thoughts, but they are hard to ignore.
_RLW_@reddit
Nothing to be worried about.
Prudent_Wish7640@reddit
Sure is. Thanks for the reminder. 😁
Timesurfer75@reddit
60’s are the new 40s don’t you know?
TifCreatesAgain@reddit
I turned 60 in January! Welcome to the club!
JuliusSeizuresalad@reddit
That’s awesome 5 wins in a row is great but going 6 - 0 is super impressive. Keep up the great work
Mededitor@reddit
Eat light. If a piece of plain toast gets you through the day, cool. You are free to ignore “meal times.”
Use more caution during walking, traversing stairs, etc. Go slower and think about what you’re doing. A trip or fall can be… unfortunate.
Mind your money. Make it work for you. Invest. Once you hit the big 6-0, getting a job can be impossible.
MorningBrewNumberTwo@reddit
Take advantage of “seniors day” discounts and enjoy! Who cares about a number? You’re as old as you feel.
twostartucson@reddit
Don’t worry about 60. 60 is just 60. 61 means you’re IN your 60s.
dave-rooney-ca@reddit
Turned 60 last September. It hit me harder than any of 30, 40 or 50, but in the end I just kinda felt like, "Damn... I made it!"
Witty_Ad4494@reddit
Just turned 61. 60 bothered me until I turned 60. Not a big deal.
NoKing9900@reddit
First, congratulations! Have a Happy Birthday!
Advice, just be yourself, it’s just another trip around the sun that you’ve 59 times before.
Keep doing the things that make you happy. And just keep that kid inside you engaged.
I turned 60 back in December, and it was no big deal.
BillHickmansCar@reddit
I agree. That IS solid advice. Turning 60 in a few months. Yes, keep doing the things that make you happy and keep the kid inside you engaged. I do that too. Still playing hockey and stickball just like I did when growing up in NYC. Sometimes I just grab a Spaldeen and have a catch against a brick wall all by myself just like when I was 8 or 9. Not about to let a number tell me how I feel or what I should do. The rocking chair will always be there. I’ll sit in it when I am ready. Not ready now - too much life to be lived!
JanaT2@reddit
I’m in nyc too and stoopball was it ! lol enjoy
BillHickmansCar@reddit
Love that! Played my share of stoop ball too! Living in the sticks now - hard to find stoops up here!!
JanaT2@reddit
I know stoops are not everywhere
BillHickmansCar@reddit
Yeah but when I find one, I put it to good use!
Thank you for your nice replies!! Always happy to talk about stoopball, stickball, etc!!
NoKing9900@reddit
I loved playing stickball in the street. I grew up in a NJ suburb of NYC
BillHickmansCar@reddit
We have a small group in Montgomery, NY that plays in Sunday mornings. Hit me up if you are around and want to join us!
JanaT2@reddit
Sure ! Nice to see fellow New Yorkers on here !
ItsTheEndOfDays@reddit
Solid advice.
TBeIRIE@reddit
It’s (somewhat) inevitable so just go with it.
pegggus09@reddit
Not there yet but close and the thing for me is I really need to figure out my options for retirement. When I can draw SS (I know not yet but amount will vary depending on date). I’ve also vested in a few defined plans so I need to see what those options will be. And we will probably relocate hopefully to a state that doesn’t tax pensions so probably need to start that search too. It’s gonna be confusing so I should arm myself with knowledge, you know?
HarmonicShepherd@reddit
Same. I turn 60 on June. I freaked out about 60 when I turned 59 but I am ok with it. I feel lucky to have lived this long.
wyohman@reddit
It's like 59 but one louder
MicheleRSimon@reddit
I'm on the other side just turned 61. I don't see what the big deal is. I just think about the people I know who died young. That puts everything in perspective for me. Life goes on there's no stopping time!
TripMaster478@reddit
Yeh it's a number. I'm 58. It doesn't feel much different than 55. And I don't see 61 as that different either. It's just an easily divisible number. It's like new years, it's just another day really but everyone always makes such a big reel about it.
RedditSkippy@reddit
I’ve got a few years. Sometimes it’s good to be on the younger side of things.
Fritz5678@reddit
Almost 59. Might as well round up.
Parking_Exit2297@reddit
I’m turning 60 in August, but some places give me senior discount idk how I feel about that
rabidstoat@reddit
You just reminded me! I'm making a rare visit to the side of town that has a Krispy Kreme and was going to pick up 2 donuts. Though I'm "only" 54, they have a 10% discount for those 50+. I'll save 50 cents!!
DubiousPinkUnicorn@reddit
I turned 60 in December. It’s no big deal. I worked at a cancer hospital for over 30 yrs. You just need a little perspective….Every birthday is a gift.
ebeth_the_mighty@reddit
I hit 55 yesterday, and I’m not quite sure how I feel about that.
HobieSlabwater@reddit
Denny's Senior Menu, baby! Actually it's just reduced portions, but I can get on board with that.
HighJeanette@reddit
It’s almost in the rear view mirror. 61 in a few months.
thirtyone-charlie@reddit
Onward through the fog!!!
SeaRayDav@reddit
I’ll be turning 61 this November and I can tell you that it was a bit of an experience turning the big 6-0! I had a mild anxiety leading up the day but it came and went just like every other before it. What I can tell you is that there are two very significant periods that we dramatically age those are 40 and 60. So to prioritize your health in every way is to play the long game! I wish you all the best and I hope you’re not stressing about the number as I did! 🙂
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
A lot of my friends are in their 60s now and most of them are loving life. Retirement makes all the difference. Kids are grown and independent (hopefully). Once you stop working there's time to do all that stuff you couldn't before. I'm hoping to retire at 60 or 61 myself, markets notwithstanding. Most of my friends didn't even mark 60 particularly, it's retirement that gets the attention and carries the weight.
HHSquad@reddit
Your 60's are a bit tricky. You should learn to play defense with your health and cut out any foods or habits that could undermine it. It can definitely come back to bite you otherwise this decade.
Also, stay active!
JanaT2@reddit
So am I in the fall. I’m so anxious.
ilovebbcitv@reddit
Mine is coming up fast. Means I'm getting a will drawn up, solid retirement plan and booking bucket list travel for next couple of years. I'm not waiting until I'm full on retired to do stuff because my interest in doing so and my energy levels are going down every year.
blueblocker2000@reddit
Is your prostate swollen with pride?
bikardi01@reddit (OP)
Wow - with a ton of positive/encouraging cooments - yours is just rude.
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
Rude. but it made me chuckle. Upvotes!
blueblocker2000@reddit
Thanks
Strong_Medium_6646@reddit
Embrace it, I turned 60 last year and I’m thoroughly enjoying my life now more than ever!
TheFlaEd@reddit
I'm right there with you. This one actually bothers me a little.
Joyous-Volume-67@reddit
It only gets worse from here? Good luck.
MissDisplaced@reddit
Next year for me. My brother is 62 and talking retirement! Our mom is still kicking at 85 so I think I still got some time.
Ok-Limit-9726@reddit
Fuck that
CheeseburgerSmoothy@reddit
I just hit that milestone and I’m not very happy about it.
therelybare5@reddit
I passed that milestone a year ago! 😂
JimTheJerseyGuy@reddit
Shush!
AZPeakBagger@reddit
I’m hitting 60 on all 8 cylinders. Finally after 5 years of trying I won the lottery for a permit to climb Mt Whitney this fall. Taking a few of my GenX friends and making a week out of it. Then a month later I turn 60.
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
I'm 60 in December. Honestly, I don't view it as some important threshold or anything. It will be weird to tell someone I'm 60 for a while, I'm sure, but I don't see any advantage to worrying about it or overthinking it.
watchwatertilitboils@reddit
Stop working, stop spending money and throw away all your crap
gmkrikey@reddit
Tough but fair.
Next_Possibility_01@reddit
I'm 60 next year, and already it's on my mind; no other age has preoccupied me as much. I am starting to panic I don't have enough money saved and that I really have no family to "take care" of me. Like I have done for my parents and aunt....like driving at night to places, running to the store, helping me move heavy items, etc. I know these are not "big" things and are manageable, but sometimes... it really occupies my mind.
bikardi01@reddit (OP)
Same here, retirement in about a year - funds should be okay, but I don't want to be an imposition to my kids, hoping my health stays good - should exercise more but find that work sucks the motivation out of me by the end of the day.
OddSand7870@reddit
STFU. I don’t want to think about this. I still feel like I am in my 20s going to bars. And then I hurt my hip kicking a sheet off of me in bed this morning. WTF?
nonnydingdong23@reddit
I am looking forward to 60. Time to retire!
Hib3rnian@reddit
6 and 0 are just numbers, it's what's in your heart and mind that defines you and your life.

“Some folks never get to be old folks. Enjoy whatever time you got.” -My aunt Margie
TickleMyBurger@reddit
This year I turn 50 - and have embraced every minute I have with my family, taking every last minute of vacation to spend it with them doing things I never thought I’d do in my life (example I picked up skiing after not doing it for 30 years, and 30 years ago I was a crappy skier) then rented a joint in the Rockies and we all went for a week. It was amazing, fun, and well out of my comfort zone. I’ve got a series of trips booked this year, spending more than I normally would be comfortable with but fuck it - we are in the zone of “shit can happen at any moment” and I don’t want that to happen while working to get my bank account higher.
I know everyone’s financial situation is different, but if you have the means - spend that shit. You’ve been working your whole life - which I assume wasn’t to just leave a big inheritance to family - so use it before you hit your late 60s and start to slow right down.
That’s my advice - read the book die with zero, it’s good perspective.
ItsTheEndOfDays@reddit
Love it! Don’t wait, enjoy what you already have.
FormerLaugh3780@reddit
From what I've seen, the downhill spiral accelerates exponentially after 60. It is what it is, our best days are behind us.
ItsTheEndOfDays@reddit
Personally, I’m having my best days right now. At least as far as my mental health and quality of days go. I’m sure that is mostly because I’m two years into retirement and enjoying allll the hobbies I never had time for before, even if my joints aren’t what they used to be.
aharryh@reddit
It's just like being 50, but 10 years older.
Bumpyslide@reddit
