Ok, so I had this really Tomboyish cousin and when we were growing up, she would always do the most insane shit to prove that she was more hardcore than my bro and I (eldest boy cousins). Her dad (my uncle) is a huge bully asshole type who picked on my dad relentlessly growing up. A very common scenario for us would go like this:
Cuz: hey bet I can jump out of the swing higher than you!
Us: uh, yeah don’t do that you’ll hurt yourself.
Cuz: what are you chicken?? flies out of swing seat, lands on head, clearly concussed
Uncle: yells at my brother and I for being bad influences
(I’m 2 months older than her, my brother is like 1.5 years older than her, so like 11, 10, and 10 years old in this instance.)
Anyway, this clip gave me flashbacks to those times.
At my school we used to launch ourselves from the swing when we reached the highest point. In other words we would have impaled ourselves on that gate so fast.
Favorite fact is that we were doing that on some thin layer of sawdust and wood chips on top of gravel. I’m surprised that i can still walk at this age.
My favorite past time at the park was attempting to fake out the adults into thinking I'd died after launching myself 🤣 Over and over again I'd lay there doing my best death impression, wondering why no moms came running over screaming for an ambulance, then jump up and run to the swing for another round
We did that, and we'd also hold on to the chain at the top of the forward motion and flip backward (kind of roll backward while holding on) then fall straight downward into a crouch position.
I'd probably faint if I ever saw my kids doing what I used to do on those swings...
I met my best friend doing this in 1st grade. 40+ years later and we still hang out weekly. Though we don’t jump from swings anymore, my knees would crumble like cheese.
My school knew kids were kids & it was deep sand 15 yards in front of & behind where the swing sets were. We spent so much time launching ourselves. I don’t remember any injuries… & I remember all my other concussions, so pretty sure I didn’t get one from the swings.
I have a scar on the back of my head where I was standing and swinging and hit the top of the concrete fence. But I was also the same kid that went backwards head first down the slides.
We’d do this but standing on the seat and at the point we jumped off would kick the seat forward, pull back on the chain and the swing would wrap round the top bar. The goal was to see how many times you could wrap it round in one go.
If you launch yourself at the highest point you’d be safe, as your angular momentum would be, near enough to make no difference, vertical. Ie straight up.
I was just telling my girlfriend that in 5th grade my teachers let us earn points the whole year and then had a grand prize where the top 3 winners (maybe 5) got to go to Bullwinkles (it’s like miniature golf, arcade, that sort of thing) with her. Just after school with your teacher. No other adults or anything.
Would never happen today. It’s sad that kids miss out on so many amazing childhood memories because they’re stuck inside all the time. They can’t even ride their bikes without me seeing 20 posts on Nextdoor talking about how dangerous it is and asking the local government to do something about it. For fuck’s sake. We got into so much trouble, and no one ever said shit.
I have a school aged kid and they all swing like this. I swear the folks who post shit like this never go outside; any public playground will look like this on any given day.
Im cracking up because I went HAM on the swinging a couple years ago, but I almost tore all my ligaments on the dismount! No more playground swings for me!
Flashback to when I would “wind up and spin” with my head sticking one way, and my feet the other. Anyway my head hit the pole and I stopped doing that
Do it a couple more times, it goes away quick. I have two young kids, so I always have to demonstrate how to swing to one of them at least. The younger one figured it out. Go figure..

The goal is all the way around. Not possible obviously, but you know you’re on track when you swing up until there’s slack and you fall -then the chain catches and you swing back and try again
