Health is primarily about discipline and/or having energy and drive.
Low self-esteem can lead to "eh why even try it'll all suc anyway" feedback loops while high self-esteem makes for "woah I should be working on this magnificent project that is me" but it's not the main factor, and mostly the consequence in fact. Confidence is pretty much the same thing too.

While I agree that people should have more self respect, I would like to remind you that she was 16 when this happened. I'm not surprised that a 16 year old girl would behave like this, especially if your friend was the first person she's ever dated. I think it's a bit harsh to expect a teenager who probably has self esteem issues to be able to just simply move on. You're right that eventually Jenny has to decide for herself that she deserves better since it's her own life and she is responsible for herself. My gf (41) has a group of older friends, around 50+. One of those friends started dating a younger guy after gettin divorced.
