NewsRadio was so good.

I've worked in journalism for the better part of my career and though I grew up listening to public radio and AM talk radio with my grandparents and parents, it's still slightly bittersweet to think that one of the reasons I went into radio myself was because of Phil Hartman and Dave Foley.
There was something about the ragtag band of misfits workplace comedy that was news radio that I greatly appreciated. My parents' generation grew up with WKRP and Taxi, and I only got the tail end of that in reruns, so NewsRadio truly was an excellent foray into the workplace comedy with a stellar cast who all largely got to play some version of themselves.
The writing was so clever, with so many memorable one-liners and a solid use of every character. It was incredibly heartbreaking when Phil Hartman died, and they honestly tried the best they could to carry on for a while with Jon Lovitz, but nothing could recreate the magic that was Phil Hartman.
Elegant_Leadership_8@reddit
The real deal with Bill McNeal.
jaywinner@reddit
I really was a great show. And from what I've heard, the show was constantly on the brink of cancellation so when they lost Phil, they didn't stand a chance. And while I get why they'd tap Lovitz to fill in the gap, it always bothered me that he had appeared as other characters on the show before.
yayoffbalance@reddit
okay, but the Lovitz episode with the "Cigarette?" bit always cracked me up. But it wasn't the same after Phil died. and maybe i am thinking of an episode where they both were in it, because i think Phil was the one who tried to accept the cigarette, only to get smacked with "i wasn't talking to you, i was talking to the cigarette..." My memory sucks, but i'd recite parts of the Cigarette bit a lot when i was a smoker (no longer a smoker, btw!)
TimeCadet@reddit
đ¤ŁYou just reminded me: I saw this episode when it was airing, it was NBC was doing a special "Pop Up Video" week where the episode had text factoids a la VH1's Pop Up Video
yayoffbalance@reddit
Jealous!! I didnt know they did that!
TimeCadet@reddit
Whoa, amazing: someone uploaded a recording of it on Youtube! The quality isn't great but the pop-ups are readable, and that moment you mentioned is like 3 mins into the episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlnl8pIzSAA

I was talking to the cigarette was a go to phrase as an 11 year old. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was watching new radio alone. Â
jaywinner@reddit
Yeah, that's the one. And I thought that was great. Less so when he joins the main cast.
He was also the guy threatening to jump off the building.
OliviaWG@reddit
Jon Lovitz was a close friend of Phil, he also punched Andy Dick, which makes me like him even more.
noelesque@reddit (OP)
Yeah he was a jumper on a ledge in one episode, I can't remember who else he played.
Im_from_the-future@reddit
What was the whole Dave folie thing where he couldnât come back to Canada or heâd be fined some crazy about of money or something like that? Donât recall now
yayoffbalance@reddit
I looked it up. it had to do with child support based on what he was making on News Radio, but his salary was declining and he couldn't get it adjusted in court... sounded messy, but he got it sorted, paid back payments, and is back in canada.
i love Dave and i watch Kids in the Hall on some "live" platform all the time. comfort show all the way. I loved News Radio, too. i've yet to pull it up on streaming, though. Might do that soon!

Thatâs Andy Dick in the back who got Hartmanâs wife hooked back on cocaine after ten years of sobriety. He also supplied Chris Farley with lots of drugs before his death. He may not have killed them directly but he sure as hell enabled them to death.
dtisme53@reddit
Look. Andy Dick is a total piece of human garbage. Heâs demonstrated that time and again but putting that shit about Philâs wife and Chris Farley is not fair.

In that same animation vein are Over the Garden Wall (Elijah Wood), Gravity Falls (Jason Ritter & Kristen Shaal), and Amphibia (which also has Stephen Root).

FreddyNoodles@reddit
I think youâre right. Very similar sets and humor style. Watching that show decades ago, could anyone have looked at this cast photo and thought ANYTHING weird might come from this? I mean maybe Andy Dick- but he was still working on a major network sitcom airing at primetime, so they saw something in him.

This what I remember Rogan for.
I was way out of the loop and unaware when his pod became massive.
Someone was talking to me about it and how good it was, I said "wait, the almost made it comedian that played the dumb electrician on Newsradio?"
They looked at me blank and said "I have no idea what Newsradio is."
I just can't take him seriously at all.
Churlish_Performer@reddit
I had the same thing except for that, for me it was like yeah... he was on Newsradio - but really, he's the Fear Factor guy, right? Like I didn't think it was that big of a deal his pod. Apparently I was partially wrong
AmPerry32@reddit
This is my experience too. I was flabbergasted. Like, wait.. what? Yâall are taking life advice from THIS guy? Newsradio shouldâve been the high water mark for Joe Rogan. Smdh.
Then Theo Vonn popped back up in a similar role and I decided we all died in that pandemic. This is all just an afterlife fever dream. Because what the hell is going on?!?

Hey! I've met Andy Dick on two occasions, when young, pretty, and partying. I found him delightful. I know that's not the norm and I know he's just been on one for like decades but I have to say, she was so kind and funny to me. My favorite was Bjork literally jumping off the stage into her van was we were waiting side stage to just, I dunno, bask in glory? He just turned and said "what a bitch".
That may not be the best example. Maybe it's a had to be there but it was so funny and it fit with the vibe and all that was happening at the time. Aloof Bjork, us just wanting to see, not bother, just see. đ¤Ł
Banjo-Oz@reddit
Such bullshit you got downvoted for a real personal experience. Andy could do horrible things and still have a good day, and vice versa. People aren't just heroes and villains, the are complex messes. Sometimes the bad parts win out and cause horrific damage, but it doesn't mean they are rotten every day of their lives in every way. Meeting a "bad" person and finding them nice doesn't mean the person was wrong about their experience.

A couple years ago I was golfing with a buddy and mentioned Iâd been watching Barry and News Radio all week. All Jimmy James all week. We stop by a pizza spot after the round and are sitting outside waiting. My back is to the door and my buddy says, youâre not going to believe who just walked InâŚStephen Root. I was like I gotta go tell him that weâve been talking about him all morning and then he walked in. So I go inside, and itâs just me and him, and I say Iâm sorry to bother you, but I told him that Iâve been watching all these shows, talking about it during our round, then you walk in! He was so nice and chill. The owner afterwards mentioned he always comes through there and is super nice. Normally never bother celebrities, but this was just too serendipitous.
LeftOn4ya@reddit
I have it on DVD and the first volume (Seasons 1 and 2) commentary is the best TV commentary ever as they spilled * who in the cast and crew were sleeping with each other * told stories jog how they got kicked out of the Emmy and other award show backstage parties, * talk about shenanigans Andy Dick did while he was high * talk fondly about Phil Hartman * talk about how all of NBCâs other shows were beefing in them in one way or another, from stealing craft services, fights over parking spots, more stories from award show afterparties * the writers room creative writing process in ling how they would pull all-nighters the night before taping days and the actors would be given whole new scripts they hadnât memorized or rehearsed an hour before filming
macklin_sob@reddit
I've had these DVDs for years. I really need to give the commentary a listen.
noelesque@reddit (OP)
Did Lorne produce this one? If so that would be ber in keeping with the SNL vibe.
LeftOn4ya@reddit
Warren Littlefield was NBC president so executive produced, but Paul Simms was the creator and was in charge of DVD special features and was in almost all commentary tracks.
